Iringa, Toka & Thika: The day after their arrival at PAWS

  • On Sunday, October 20, three female African elephants from the Toronto Zoo in Ontario, Canada, arrived safely at PAWS ARK 2000 sanctuary in San Andreas, California. Their trip was funded by Emmy Award-winning game show host, Bob Barker, who ardently advocated for the move. The elephants, Toka, age 43, Thika, age 33, and Iringa, age 44, will eventually share an 80-acre natural habitat with PAWS' three African elephants, Mara, Maggie and Lulu.
Iringa, Toka and Thika spent their first night in the barn and the next morning PAWS keepers let them out into the small yard adjoining the barn. Here they will have the chance to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of their new home. Their introduction to Mara, Maggie and Lulu, and the large habitat the six elephants will share, will be done carefully, and on "elephant time", and may take weeks or even months.

Patrick. The elimination of the use of seal fur in clothing was certainly a positive move to stop the brutal killing of baby seals that were killed solely just their fur pelts. However when the EU presented this as a total ban on fur it also had a negative impact for our northern Inuit population. The Inuit hunt seals as a food source and they responsibly use the whole animal to support themselves. The fur pelts they did not use for clothing were sold to generate an income which was used to buy fuel, ammunition, snow machines, and other materials to support themselves. I really never gave this much thought myself until my daughter became a teacher on a small island for a 600 person Inuit community. As we followed her time teaching there she would often tell of students who would miss school days because they were “out on the land” helping to hunt for food for the family. @@lilianflower3017 Me too. I hope someday zoos will be banned along with circuses. The "preserving species" is BS. The barbaric way zoos obtain their animals, cage them for decades, then the cruel way they get rid of them when they're no longer "entertaining"....I can't stomach it. If they truly want to "preserve species" rather than turning animals into sideshows for money, they would create sanctuaries; not zoos.

Growing up in the 70's zoo's and aquariums were everywhere, even then i knew it was wrong. The only zoo my kids have ever been to is the baby lambs, bunnies and goats petting and grooming zoo's of the temporary kind which pop u around easter on local farms. The kids get to pet the animals and learn about local farm animals and their care. Who doesn't want to brush a week old baby lamb?!!

Thank-you Paws for rescuing these beautiful, deserving animals. An update would, indeed be appreciated. Also, many of us are wondering if you've had a chance to check into the possibility of rescuing an elephant with plight addressed on Facebook. A woman sought your help not too long ago regarding the featuring of her picture and name on youtube in an effort to raise awareness of her suffering among global citizens, hence, donations for rescue. The elephant's name is Mai and she too is chained, hurting and lonely. Please!!! Let us know if you can or have already helped her so, if necessary, a funding venue can be set up for her. I'm praying that the outcome for Mai will be so positive that photo, name and bio of each elephant in need will be routinely posted on UA-cam so as to raise awareness of their plight among the millions of folks to whom Facebook is, for whatever reason, unappealing. Blessings, always.

I read an article recently that said Bob Barker is fading fast. I think he has developed Failure to Thrive and just doesn’t want to keep living without his wife who died several years ago.
All these sanctuaries that Bob supports will feel the money pinch when he passes. Betty White, another animal supporter, is also quickly fading. I don’t know if there are other, younger Hollywood people who will step up and carry the torch. For these animals’ sakes I hope someone does.

I just thought of something. We are all so happy these elephants are now free to do what they want to do. In a way, I bet they are terrified. They have spend their whole life having someone dictate what they were supposed to do......now all of a sudden they can do what they want. They probably feel lost. They have not developed the skills necessary to cope with freedom. I hope they have or bring in an animal psychologist to help. These elephants are a lot different from the other video. In the other video the elephants were running around squealing, jumping around in the river and having a good old time.

The first day after their arrival, I can already see them walking faster as if nothing happened , today 12days later,, they must be totally loving the new climate of sunny side California,

Thank you for showing the video. I was so worried about the elephants and the long travelling that they did. Take care of these precious animals, I know that they have gone to a great place to retire. Thank you so much for caring.

  • @marshhen

This is the retirement that all elephants in captivity in zoos, circuses etc deserve. For those incapable of reading the description and freaking out about the size of the space, they are being slowly introduced to an 80 !!! acre piece of land. Why don't you take out your hostility on the people profiting off the suffering and enslavement of these magnificent creatures instead of leaving nasty comments on this channel's videos. I am glad to see this place is here. It needs more generous rich people to get involved to stop the suffering of these animals. In the meantime for those "expert" commenters who dont know an African elephant from an Asian elephant, why not just go rant on the videos of tourists who ride elephants on holiday.

I saw them unchained many times. In fact, they only had chains on their legs in preparation of the move - the chains were to safely secure them for their long move.

I'm wondering why they were transferred from Toronto. They don't look very healthy and I would never have thought that Toronto Zoo would abuse animals in any way. Bob Barker was an Earth Angel! We have a wonderful elephant sanctuary here in Middle Tennessee called The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee!! So happy for those magnificent animals!

These magnificent beasts need a lot more than a paltry 80 acres for their habitat. Having said that, what these "cuddly pachyderms" now have is 10,000% better than being in a zoo.
