  • Maggie arrived at PAWS 2,300-acre ARK 2000 sanctuary in Northern California on November 1, 2007. On February 13, 2008, Maggie made her first foray into the large African Elephant habitat with her four companions 71, Mara, Lulu and Ruby. Maggie and the others were excited to finally socialize without a barrier, rumbling and trumpeting their greeting in true African elephant style.
    ******
2019 - An update on Maggie, the elephant who flew with the U.S. Air Force!
Every November we mark the anniversary of African elephant Maggie's 2007 arrival at the Performing Animal Welfare Society's (PAWS) 2,300-acre ARK 2000 sanctuary in Northern California. What we celebrate each year is her resilience as an individual - not her captivity through no choice of her own. Most captive elephants have a story to tell of hardship, spirit, and survival. We think you'll agree that Maggie's story has all of that, and more.
Maggie's life story began in Zimbabwe, Africa, where she was born into a closely-knit elephant family. But her life would change forever after her mother and family were gunned down during a government-sanctioned cull. Traumatized calves like Maggie were usually spared so they could be sold into captivity.
The Alaska Zoo acquired Maggie in 1983 when she was a small calf. She would spend the next 24 years in Anchorage, the last 10 years of that time alone in a small enclosure. But then things changed again. . .
A group of Anchorage citizens believed it was time to let Maggie retire to a place with a warmer climate and more natural surroundings, and where she could live with other African elephants. Their impassioned outcry soon spread well beyond Alaska's borders. Around that time Maggie also developed some serious health challenges related to her confinement. Fortunately, Alaska Zoo Director Pat Lampi and the zoo's board of directors did the right thing and voted to relocate Maggie. PAWS was honored when they chose ARK 2000 as her forever home.
Being the special elephant that she is, Maggie was flown to California by the U.S. Air Force in a move they dubbed Operation Maggie Migration. Because no commercial airline option was available to transport her, Maggie was flown aboard a C-17 Globemaster III from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska to Travis Air Force Base in California. From there she traveled by truck to her new home at PAWS in Calaveras County. The Air Force was reimbursed for the full cost of transport by Emmy Award-winning television game show host and animal advocate Bob Barker.
Thanks to moderate California temperatures, Maggie now spends her days outdoors in a large natural habitat where she engages in behaviors natural to elephants: walking as much as she likes, foraging on green grass and trees, exploring the environment, or lying down to nap on a sunny hillside.
Maggie has gone from being a lone elephant - not only at the Alaska Zoo but in the entire state of Alaska! - to one of the more gregarious elephants at the ARK 2000 sanctuary. She has forged friendships with other elephants, and socializes these days with best friends Lulu (retired from the San Francisco Zoo) and Toka (retired from the Toronto Zoo). In fact, the two elephants stand guard over Maggie during her afternoon naps, only moving away once she rises.
Everybody seems to love Maggie - the other elephants, PAWS' staff (including Michelle Harvey, who had formerly cared for Maggie at the Alaska Zoo), and everyone who tracks her continuing story through PAWS' social media sites. The people of Anchorage and the Alaska Zoo have remained true friends, visiting Maggie during our "Seeing The Elephant" weekends, open houses and other welcome visits. Alaska Zoo Director Pat Lampi not only visits Maggie, he has participated as a speaker at PAWS' International Captive Wildlife Conferences (next conference will be in Northern California in November 2020).
Maggie is truly a special elephant, and PAWS is proud that we have provided a loving home for her since 2007. We look forward to many more.

Looking at this now, our little Maggie has a spring in her step. I never saw her walk like that before. We did right letting her go. She's already happy. Yep, she had a spring in her step.

I love elephants and I also love the people who care for them, to give them the best life possible when nimrods take them out of their natural habit and then others have to deal with it. These people are wonderful, I admire them most and they are doing God's work by being the keepers and watchers over his creation. They have treasure in heaven, best kind to have.

I'm very happy that Maggie is happy. I keep up with the most current information I can from the PAWS website. I always felt sorry for her (and Annabelle at that) for being in our zoo - Anchorage Zoo. Although they were the main attraction, it was still sad to see them. Thank you Bob Barker and PAWS for loving the one living elephant that I grew up with. She seems so happy!

Its heart warming to see Maggie get to join her group of like elephants. It is plain to see life is looking up for her and all elephants who are lucky enough to make it to PAWS. Let us not forget the unfortunate others who have not been allowed to join the group. To d smith and other gutless trolls: Your throwing of vague and non-descript anonymous mud paddies is meaningless and juvenile. If you have specific accusations to make against particular individuals regarding actual incidences, by all means speak your piece. Otherwise

With Ed's expertise on the care, knowledge, and understanding of elephants Limba, and Lucy will experience close to dying and going to heaven if they can be set free from their current accommodations, [ accommodate means to adapt, adjust ] notice I never said living as they are not living their lives to the fullest they are prisoners. Can someone answer a question I have what is the benefit for Lucy and Limba in there current accommodations?. My answer is simply routine they have never known what is truly a day in a life of an elephant, no mud holes, no lakes, no freedom to move or roam where they please, no exploration, no natural stimulation, no natural socialization with there peers, exposed to excruciating cold and confinement on cement is all they know. Give them the opportunity to live.

Mixing Asian and African elephants in the same enclosure was done at a couple of zoos, but since they are very different in their intensity levels, and roughness of play, and would never encounter each other in the wild, it is normally advised against.

Co-operative feeding? Is that like co-operative missing pathology reports? Or not doing pathology samples on elephants that die in your care? Those elephants are fat and the extra weight is very hard on joints.
