This song, RESPECT was written by Otis. He did it his way; Aretha did it hers, even though she got more mileage out of it than Otis. I didn't realize Stevie even sang this one. I will take not one thing from either of these musical gems.
It's Otis' tune, but, WOW did Aretha do it or WHAT???!!! Aretha made that tune a Woman's Fight Song!!! Took that song around the WORLD & BACK AGAIN...Somebody in OUTER SPACE is singing Aretha's version of Respect!!! Nice cover by Stevie!!! Aretha wins this, No Question!!! LONG LIVE QUEEN ARETHA!!!
OTIS WROTE IT!! STEVIE DID HIS THANG!!!!! MISS ARETHA!!!!!! PICKED IT WASH IT!!! SEASONED IT!! FRIED IT UP!! IN A CASTIRON FRYING PAN!!! AND SERVE IT UP!!!!
Aretha's secret weapon was her sister, Carolyn, who is credited with creating and arranging the background vocals for Respect. Plus, she had three more weapons, not so secret, namely producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and engineer Tom Dowd. Together, they created the perfect record.
I love all of them they were all so talented can't take it away from them but Aretha put some stank on it I didn't even remember that Stevie Wonder did this song I danced to all three no contest all three Awesome thanks for sharing
The Queen of Soul - ARETHA! She commands that respect in her voice, & makes you want to dance along as well! OTIS always had a funky, raw R & B style that made you bob your head, & stomp your feet, & STEVIE a more Pop-R & B style that's playful, & fun to listen to.
Although I like Aretha's version and it made her, I love Otis's version mo' better it's just has a certain grittiness to it...plus I love Otis right up there with ReRe. Man... I grew up listening to this music. I didn't even know Stevie had a version.
The Queen without a doubt. Otis would be second. Just like people like Sam Cook, Luther. Teddy. Al &.Marvin we refer to Aretha as the "incomparable" Aretha Franklin.
I do not think this song was famous until Aretha sang it. It became a Woman's Anthem. Everyone was dancing to it. The background vocals enhanced it. Sock it to Me, sound of the 60's. Great Soul Music from a woman's point of view. Aretha OWNS this song,. This is her signature song. Iconic, a Classic!!!
First and foremost, all three of these interpretations, speaks of the wonderment of soul music. Redding's style is gritty and lace with the needs of an older man. Stevie version is more of a youthful yawning...and Aretha is more of an expression of a woman liberating herself and her sexual prowess.
I notice Ike and Tina's version is missing but I have to agree Aretha owns that song even though it's Otis not to say I don't love his version but have to give it to Aretha
Back in the day, you could sell a lot of records with a strictly "Soul Music / Black Radio Station" hit. Otis was consistently on these charts, good for 100,000 + in sales. NEVER on the Pop Music Charts, until, of course his one big, posthumous hit. After that, at least his follow - ups were played, although they weren't as strong. I heard his version of "Try A Little Tenderness" on KGFJ - AM in Los Angeles. I HAD to buy the album "Dictionary of Soul." Great! "Hawg For You Baby" brings Modern Blues, back! Of course, 3 Dog Night had the Pop Hit. Aretha's version was the perfect result of various talented people. She & her sisters worked out the "Sock It To Me!" part, and Jerry Wexler noticed that there was no real 'Bridge.' He suggested lifting the middle instrumental break from Sam & Dave's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," kind of a slow part, and having King Curtis play over this. (You can hear this, if you listen with some care). To top it off, this was 'just' an album track, until Jocks 'demanded' that this be released, as a single! The result, is incendiary! And 'for the Record,' an Ann Arbor rock group, the Rationals (we could use them, in Politics, today!) had a small hit with a cover of "Respect" in late 1966. On Cameo - Parkway. Before Aretha. Listenable, O K, but nothing can beat Aretha's arrangement!
Otis and Aretha are a tie, I all way loved the both. Otis rendition gives you a male point of view; he’s trying to stay in the relationship, but change is needed Aretha is sick of his behavior, she will to work it out.
If it helped sell the record they would. You gotta remember. It was hard for black artists to break through. To the white market. In the early sixties. It's called marketing. A different time and place in music history.
Yes. Have you seen Robert Townsend’s The Five Heartbeats? Classic scene when the group gets a copy of their first Lp and are disappointed and outraged that they aren’t on the cover.
_Best way to sum it up is the same way Otis did: _*_"That girl done stole my song!!"_*
Otis. Did it the way funky tracks are meant to be done.
Aretha gave it the soul she's always given.
Stevie gave it a Pop/R&B feel
I think Stevie Wonder was just paying homage to Otis. If you listen closely to the being of Stevie's rendition it's playing Tramp by Otis.
Aretha, for God's sake. No point in talking over it. She took it to the next level like no other. She OWNS this song.
Is this really a contest. Aretha stamped this as her own. When people think of Respect R-E-S-P-E-C-T they first think of the Queen of Soul
This song, RESPECT was written by Otis. He did it his way; Aretha did it hers, even though she got more mileage out of it than Otis. I didn't realize Stevie even sang this one. I will take not one thing from either of these musical gems.
Aretha took this song and never gave it back!
Aretha hands down. Plus you can't lose with Muscle Shoals rhythm section and the Memphis horns.
Big live an respect to the gods an goddess of black music
Aretha’s Signature! 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿 She owned it! ❤️❤️❤️

Come on man, THE QUEEN OF SOUL. 🏆
Otis!! Always has been always will be. ❤
Aretha sang Otis' song better.
I didn't know Stevie Wonder covered this song. I didn't like him singing it. The lyrics didn't fit him.
All 3 made it their own, as only great artists can.
I love Aretha but Damn I feel the Soul coming from Otis voice.. Otis by a whisker.
I love them all and all of them was looking for the same respect.
I just like the up beat of Aretha and Otis more.
Aretha 24/7, R.I.P to the Queen of soul.
She just made it popular

Loads of respect for the underrated Otis Redding. Unfortunately this is Aretha Franklin's #1 most popular song.
Otis got this imo but both are great
Yes..yes sir..damn you Otis😄😄..when Otis says it u gots to do IT 😍😍
@@tiffanyfoy1039 indeed asked and demanded it
While I R-E-S-P-E-C-T all three virtuosos, The Queen of Soul is triumphant in this "Playblack" contest. 🕌
Have to give it to the Queen 👸🏾
Is my break but to start back again see you tomorrow

You know good and well Aretha is first with her version Oasis II and Minnie is tired
I'm going with what L Johnson said 2 years ago.
SkunkHead Skifflejack hands down!! 😉😉😉😉.
Aretha, Stevie, and then Otis..
How random to have a white woman a cover of a soul album. Would they have a black women the cover of a country music album or a Japanese music album??
If it helped sell the record they would. You gotta remember. It was hard for black artists to break through. To the white market. In the early sixties. It's called marketing. A different time and place in music history.

Question, when you think of the song “Respect”, who do you think???
That’s right it’s Aretha first and foremost!!!
Angetha eralini is semali great I pick her verizon all day long that's all I hward than.
No disrespect to the original queen of soul, but I love stevie's
I believed Otis. He meant that. 1. Otis. 2. Aretha 3. Stevie.
Why ask such a question ❓❓
Aretha, baby 💚 but all greats
Depending on my mood, it could be either Otis or Aretha.
ARETHA!!
Aretha...Otis.....Stevie
Otis, Aretha .
Ok for me its neck and neck between Otis and Aretha. I love Stevie Wonder to death. But not on this one.
The big O.
