Judy's version is iconic. Israel's version is charming and sweet. But Eva's version is transcendent! It breaks my heart into fifty million pieces EVERY time.
C, it may be. For sure, it should be high on most jazz lovers list. It’s on my list, even though she died within six months of recording it. There isn’t the body of work that the established greats have, making it hard to compare her with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and the like. Watch out for Angelina Jordan making her way onto that list, also.
@@jeffstumpf9129 I am a giant Angelina Jordan fan, glad that my first experience of her amazing artistry was the audition in Norway's Got Talent. I tell young people to listen to Billie Holiday's version FIRST to see where AJ is coming from and then to listen to her. Her cover of Lana del Rey's "Born To Die" is better than the OG, IMO.
@@hoopfool8, yes, and we can hope to find out how she can even get better with age. I am nearly 69 and I want to see what becomes of her before I pass on. Long live Jazz!
I really appreciate how you let the song play out and allowed yourself to be moved by her incredible talent. "Elegant" was the perfect word to describe this performance.
Eva's father hated that she made the guitar work so difficult. As always Eva was not deterred. If her rendition does not bring you to tears, you need to check with your cardiologist.
Eva gives us an emotional caress with this song and takes us to a place we all wish to be....beyond the rainbow. I am watching my own hourglass run down, I am passionate about music - I've never heard a musical endeavor any better than this - accomplished by our departed angel, Eva. Rest in peace, Songbird.
Her version is so emotive that I get choked up every time listening to her. I agree that this is the most emotional version of the song I've heard. Eva was a wonderful singer and guitarist. Such a tragic loss that she passed so early. Love your reaction.
Isn't she beautiful. I'm a big fan of her music. The first time I heard her on the radio. I just stood there by my radio to listen. I fell into music love.
Eva is always incredible, but this rendition of Over the Rainbow is insane. I have a friend who was lucky enough to see her perform live. You are right in wondering how someone can "dislike" this. I cannot imagine it. I have her "Songbird" album. Love it
I feel what has always made Eva so special, and most especially with this song, is that she has the incredibly rare talent of transcending the lyrics and music of a song and rather tells the story that the song is attempting to capture. Without the movie, Garland is just singing a song that's not particularly meaningful or memorable. That doesn't take away from the performance. But Eva? Eva tells the timeless story of youthful innocence coming to an end, dreams, longing and hope.
Yes Eva's a very rare talent, but to say Judy Garland singing this at the age of 17 was not memorable or meaningful is beyond me.. My god her voice & delivery of this song was impeccable!!
Eva sang this in January of 1996, she was diagnosed with cancer in June of that year and passed away in Nov. of the same year. RIP Eva. A great talent taken way to soon.
I never get tired of listening to Eva's vocal gift. Remember, this is a live recording at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley nightclub. Oh, and Eva had a cold that night. A proud daughter of our DC Metro area here, Eva lives and lives and lives. #RIP Songbird.✝✝✝

There is quite a back story to Eva and it is that she passed away before she became famous; this song was played on an English Radio station one day and she completely took off; the equivalent of a viral explosion in England and later in America. And you are correct this is the ultimate, totally original version of this song. It makes you hear it all over in a different way from any of the versions out there. React to anything, she is SO original.
People have said on here this is the most perfect rendition , cover, call it what you will,of over the rainbow , anything thing in fact. And by God almighty I Will never argue with that..🎸👍❤️
For most, words are hard to find after hearing this, silent awe and a few tears are common, deservingly. Regarding "why the dislikes" to this, the only answer I can come up with is I know there's people (my cousin, for one) who so love Judy Garland that they're blinded somewhat by it. Me, I love both for different reasons, but Eva's is the perfect, purist version. RIP, Eva, as well as Judy. May you both live in the hearts of the many forever.
Ah, I just realized the birds were coming from your place. When she sang "Happy little bluebirds..." I was wondering when they added birds to the recording. LOL But, it was a masterful performance by Eva Cassidy and that includes her guitar play. 3/21/22, 1:51 p.m.
Daniel, this was recorded in January 1996. She was diagnosed with the news of the spread of melanoma in June of 1996. She passed in November 1996. So, no, the passion of the song doesnt come from diagnosis news so please stop stating that. Her true story needs no embellishment. Im not trying to come down on u but u have posted this in multiple reactions. Listen to the words and see the passion she delivers them with. Can u not understand what her dreams were? She was virtually unknown outside of the Washington DC area. Its said, she sold copies of the Blues Street recordings out of the trunk of her car. She was offered record contracts from producers that wanted to pidgeon hole her style and control her music. She was not going for that. Finally she got a contract to her liking and that company went bankrupt before an album could be made. And now we listen and enjoy her music posthumously. It also has been said that she would not record a song that didnt mean something to her personally. The result of that speaks for itself. Superb arrangement, virtuoso guitar picking and chord digressions, emotive and passionate singing. Best version ever.
PS She was very sick with a winter cold during the time this was recorded and she was unhappy with her performance as she was ever the perfectionist. Imagine not being happy with this. Her performance is amazing.

Eva Cassidy died in her thirties, before any fame came her way. After her death, this recording became a big hit in Europe, and then here. She was a truly wonderful artist, who died before she was recognized. Except by you, now.
I had never heard of Eva Cassidy until I watched young Lucy Thomas of the UK do a cover tribute to Eva. Eva's version is a sad version, yes I know she was dying of cancer, BUT when Lucy Thomas did her cover tribute to Eva it was a most beautiful happy version with the accompanyment of a fantastic Guitar Player, James Franklin. And Lucy and James did the song proud creating the best version I have ever heard, why I came to see what Eva did. And Lucy has a better singing voice, wider range, more music in her singing, more breath and voice control and a higher range to her voice !!! Lucy mailed it in tribute to Eva !!! And James played a soft flowing accustic version that was just fantastic !!! Great cover, the best !!! You should check out Lucy's version IF you liked this one !!

She sang that so awesome and yet she was sick that day that she went and did that. I watched a documentary on her and they said that she was sick that day that she had to go do that. that's why her voice cracked at the end and yet it was still so awesome.
Eva Marie Cassidy is an American singer, born February 2, 1963 in Washington and died November 2, 1996 in Bowie, Maryland.... for info: big emotion for me who had known her to see young people again today watching her songs because she also had a sublime voice and was also a great stars ...
This song was played on British radio, and the calls to hear it again were countless -- after she had died. It became a huge hit, and finally because of that she was heard in the US.

Love your reaction. I think there's a music theory that every note has a beginning, middle, end. Eva waits for it...and hits each note at the end. So powerful.
Eva Cassidy opted out of fame and fortune. All she wanted was to be able to sing her favorite songs in her way. And she meant whatever the genre. She was not to be pigeonholed.
Eva Cassidy is a singer that comes once in a lifetime. She has a clear angelic voice. In addition to this Eva understands the emotions of the lyrics & music of each song. Then she creates & sings the song the way she felt. That’s why her songs are unique & are her creations. This song (Over The Rainbow) is by Eva is so moving compared to the original version by Judy Garland. Similarly, the song Autumn Leaves has been sung by many singers (including Nat King Cole) do not have the same emotions as that by Eva Cassidy. Every-time I listen to Autumn Leaves by Eva, I get teary. It is a very sad song about missing someone. Eva was able to bring out the emotion attached to this song. Additionally Eva is a great guitarist with great control over her voice. Thank you Eva for your music. RIP Eva, God bless you & keep you.
Other versions I have heard, and I have heard many, many others, including many mentioned in the comments here, are covers of many types and with many kinds of vocal acrobatics, often overdone, or straight out copies of the original, and everything in between. Not one, repeat not one, matches the extraordinary rawness and emotion, the clarity of voice, and the impeccable arrangement of this version. Judy Garland's version is iconic. Eva Cassidy's version is timeless. It will not be matched....ever.
EVA singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, she was really ill, running a temperature. Eva was introduced by the late Terry Wogan Radio 2,Eva first aired on Radio 2 before anyone really heard of her. Another gone to soon lost the fight against cancer but her beautiful voice lives on.
Yes, Eva and IZ my favorites although there is a rare Garland version as the last song of a concert way back when and the ONLY time she ever performed it in a concert. Quite moving. Also, let me introduce you to “John Gary” a ballad vocalist who passed away I believe in 1998 at the age of 68 but whose First LP in 1963 titled “ Catch A Rising Star” contained his rendition of “ once upon a time”- my favorite nostalgic song. ( I’ll be 76 tomorrow). John Gary was Elvis Presley’s favorite ballad vocalist. “ once upon a time” Gary soars to the celestial realm on a few long sustained high notes. He had a 4 octave vocal range. Please play it privately for my birthday and let me know if you enjoyed it. Much love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida. -Al❤️
It was that song that eventually made her famous, albeit several years after she died, first in the UK. This is the story: ua-cam.com/video/aDN_ss1S_5Y/v-deo.html
I have literally seen hundreds of live concerts, it's my passion starting from 1981. I wish I could have seen Eva perform. What a jewel she was, I'm just so glad her talent was recorded for posterity. No-one touches me the way she does.
I think any unlikes are because Judy Garland have fans that love her and don't think any variation of ' her song' is not to be liked... Ps...this live rendition is wonderful but official recording is sublime...enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much for taking the time to truly listen & emotionally engage with the piece, without interruption or comment until after its conclusion. So many reaction videos are ruined for me, because reactors lack the attention span to really listen & feel, without needing to stop the video after every phrase & offer inane inconsequential insight. Whether music or comedy, or thought provoking speech, each piece under review has required extensive thought, rewriting & editing, or extraordinary talent to formulate. We owe it to those people to not only hear, but to truly listen to it in its entirety before giving our reaction. If reactors were listening to something for the first time live, they wouldn't be talking over the artist at the end of every sentence, as it would be incredibly rude, shallow, & ruin every performance. Some people have completely lost the equally important art of listening patiently. You haven't. 👌👍
Eva Cassidy unfortunately had her life cut short and we have missed her music all these years. She had perfect pitch in tone with such clarity. Another artist I think you would enjoy is Angelina Jordan. She is currently 15 years old and one Norway's Got Talent at age 8! She sings any genre with specialty in jazz and soul and classics. She is so incredibly talented and was recently signed by Republic records. Check out Rusty shackleford's homepage on UA-cam and you'll see a chronological playlist of over 135 recordings from ages 6 to 15. There are some originals in there as well. You mentioned about losing someone, Angelina in the past few months wrote an original song called a million miles which is dedicated to her grandfather who passed away and also is a tribute to anyone who has lost a loved one. It is a masterpiece of Hope and emotion
People push the dislike button just to do it, they have no talent of their own and could care less about what they are listening to or watching. They're sad little people who just like to make people mad. They are the Karen's of the world
I, too, think that this song never had it so good. I think, that she changed the melody from the original is why some people didn’t like this version. She might have sung the original and then this version like a jazz singer, might have placated the haters. I know the the original tune, so I wouldn’t need that.
Judy Garland sings it like she's there already (somewhere over the rainbow) and and it's so awesome she's got to sing about it. Eva sings it like she's in a very sad maybe dark place and really wishes she was there. I read she found out this day that she has cancer and only months to live. Not sure if true....
No, this recording was done in January of 1996. She was diagnosed with melanoma in June or July and then she died a few months later, in November of 1996.
A good honest reaction. I’m surprised you haven’t reacted to Home Free yet . They are an a Capella group that are out of this world. I suggest you start with Man of constant sorrow ! You will not be disappointed.
You ask the question, "Why would anyone dislike this performance?" You say 3.7 thousand people out of 19 million viewers of this song disliked it. The answer is that it's called a Bell Curve. When I went to university, the grades of exams were placed on a bell curve. Intelligence has a bell curve. Emotional intelligence also has a bell curve. There are a select few at the top of the bell curve and others at the bottom of the curve. It doesn't matter what you are talking about -- there are always those who will be at the bottom of the curve. Always those who dislike something and it matters not what it is.
It is a sad version and this turns people off who do not understand the back story of Eva who was dying of cancer when she recorded this song !! ! Too many people make emotional decisions without any facts !!
This was never one of my favourite songs until I heard this version 30 years ago. It's the voice obviously, but it's also the distinctive phrasing. And as a guitar player myself I can tell you her guitar playing is phenomenal.
You must listen to Kenny Rankin. Blackbird or While my guitar gently weeps. George Harrison had Kennys version of guitar at his funeral, Kenny is a wonderful singer ,guitarist songwriter who like Eva is no longer with us.
This recording was in January of 1996. She learned she had metastatic melanoma in June or July, 1996. And she died in November of 1996. Gone way too soon 😪♥️😇
So many people don’t like it because they don’t understand and appreciate Jazz. This rendition is as fine an example of Jazz singing and arrangement there is, but it sounds odd to them. They believe that it messed up an already perfect song. If they don’t feel it, they’re not going to get it.
Judy's version is iconic. Israel's version is charming and sweet. But Eva's version is transcendent! It breaks my heart into fifty million pieces EVERY time.

Thanks for this and thanks for not interrupting.
EVA singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, she was really ill, running a temperature. Eva was introduced by the late Terry Wogan Radio 2,Eva first aired on Radio 2 before anyone really heard of her.
Another gone to soon lost the fight against cancer but her beautiful voice lives on.
with tears in my eyes best cover ever.....thank you great reaction....new sub
sublime, as always
Such a haunting rendition of this song.. brings me to tears every time I hear it.. she died way too young at 33 yrs old in Nov of 1996.
criminally underated.
You may like her version of Autumn Leaves, too.
No malice but anyone who dislikes this obviously flunked music appreciation.
-Al❤️
Just done your song, God Bless you and enoy your birthday.
Rest in peace, sweet girl.
I think any unlikes are because Judy Garland have fans that love her and don't think any variation of ' her song' is not to be liked...
Ps...this live rendition is wonderful but official recording is sublime...enjoy your videos.
This amazing woman was taken way too soon RIP Eva
Try Eva's Nightbird. One of my favorites.
It is a masterpiece of Hope and emotion
awesome.
Her version of Songbird is really good!
People push the dislike button just to do it, they have no talent of their own and could care less about what they are listening to or watching. They're sad little people who just like to make people mad. They are the Karen's of the world
If you dislike this you have no soul. Empty vessel.
Sublime. Loved the live birdsong accompaniment. Another nice cover worth checking out is the John Martyn version.
She had such a crystal voice. Would you please listen to her "Fields of Gold." Thank you.
❤️
She had a cold that night.
That's so well put!! Thank you for sharing
It is a sad version and this turns people off who do not understand the back story of Eva who was dying of cancer when she recorded this song !! ! Too many people make emotional decisions without any facts !!
Listen to Fields of Gold as performed by Eva Cassidy.
This was never one of my favourite songs until I heard this version 30 years ago. It's the voice obviously, but it's also the distinctive phrasing. And as a guitar player myself I can tell you her guitar playing is phenomenal.
this supposedly was the last song she performed before dying of cancer at the age of 32 of cancer later that year
Check out her song "Songbird"
Listen to Karen Carpenter, Kate Bush and Floor Jansen!!!!
You must listen to Kenny Rankin. Blackbird or While my guitar gently weeps.
George Harrison had Kennys version of guitar at his funeral,
Kenny is a wonderful singer ,guitarist songwriter who like Eva is no longer with us.
She found out that day she had terminal cancer. She went on anyone, she died 10 months later at age of 33.
Sorry, what you said is NOT true. The song was recorded in Jan 1996, Eva was diagnosed in June of 1996 and passed away in November of 1996.
This recording was in January of 1996. She learned she had metastatic melanoma in June or July, 1996. And she died in November of 1996. Gone way too soon 😪♥️😇
Try Tennessee Waltz
So many people don’t like it because they don’t understand and appreciate Jazz. This rendition is as fine an example of Jazz singing and arrangement there is, but it sounds odd to them. They believe that it messed up an already perfect song. If they don’t feel it, they’re not going to get it.
