I was driving my car when I heard Eva for the first time. I searched a parking lot and listened to her voice singing fields of gold ! Mesmerizing !
I first heard Eva on a radio in a hospital with my mum lying before me very unwell. My mum was a big fan of the Wizard of Oz so it was like her song. Mum pulled through and lived another 3 years. I turn back to Over the Rainbow often to remember her.
@@NoProb4Rob sting has acknowledged her version that.
to me Eva had the most beautiful voice I've heard, something about the tone or timbre of her voice is amazing. It still gives me goosebumps when I hear this song. I also love her singing on Jazz and Blues songs like Wayfaring Stranger and Stormy Monday, its very soulful.
I’d say Karen Carpenter as well
Playing the guitar at the same time so flawlessly really shows her abilities and skills ❤
The difference between 'good' singers and 'great' singers is 'good' singer's rely on, and hide behind backing singers, backing music, theatrical settings etc to make them sound great. Whereas truly 'great' singers need only one thing. Their own voice. Pure, raw, and unedited. Its really that simple.
I wish you do her performance of Fields of gold.
Eva was the best thing happened to my library. May God rest her soul in peace.
I was very fortunate to have gone to high school with Eva.
Lucky were you in same grade
Wow!
She makes this well-known song her own. She’s never predictable. She brings a kind of wistful hope to the song.
Eva was gone from us less than a year after this performance. Her official recorded version of this same song is even more powerful. I love her.
My favorite thing she does is when she holds a note at the end of a phrase and bleeds it into the next line.
I feel it needs to be said here, that in judging this version of Eva's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," you MUST take into consideration that this appearance and performance of hers was mere months before her death of melanoma. It's beyond understanding how she could sing given the amount of pain she was in at the time. Eva had an incredibly diverse range and style of singing, and no assessment of her could be based on anything less than the full aggregate of her songs. A natural and flawless interpreter of vocal style, Eva truly embodied the definition of virtuoso.
This performance was in early January and her symtoms didn't appear until that spring. She passed in Nov. of the same year. I don't think it was known at the time that anything was wrong.
To me, in MHO...nothing beats her voice...emotions and her humbleness....I don't care if her cancer symptoms were relevant or not...Eva my, you were and are...the Best...over
I don't know much about Eva Cassidy but I surely remember how fast I fell in love with her cover of "Fields Of Gold". Her voice was so tender and strong at the same time. Absolutely beautiful. And now I thank you for letting me discover this performance.
The greatest singers do not need power, it's all about TONE and CHARACTER in a artist's voice.
I love how at 8:51 you sing along with Eva as flat as a pancake. It's well known that she had a bad cold during this recording and wanted to cancel it, but had spent her last penny on the recording crew and equipment so as the trooper she was, she went through with it anyway. As a vocal coach, you had a geat opportunity here to teach some of your students many of the great techniques Eva used.
Oh~ I'm very happy to hear Eva here~~~~
Right on the money with your analysis Carl.
Eva's interpretation of the song is unmatched gentle strength.
loved your reaction toJeff Buckley, he's my favorite male singer, and now...Eva Cassidy..my favorite female singer! thank you
I always thought no one could sing this as well as Judy Garland, until I heard Eva Cassidy’s version.
I love hear rendition of Time after Time and True Colors but to be honest I love anything she sings she can sing the phone book and be like wow that is so beautiful.
I now appreciate you when u reacted to one of my favorite singer. RIP eva
Eva was not feeling well that night. She was amazing!
Her version of “Fields of Gold” is one of my most favorite songs ever.
Right. There's no ego in this expression. There's a sincerity from deep within.
I'm sure I you could ask Eva she would say she sings it like she feels it. Yes, it's higher and deeper- not consciously- this is pure Soul music- funny how people try to analyze, initiate, or duplicate- it's always so obvious that no one but her could do this, no one else could ever, ever Be Eva Cassidy. Of course, there are other greats this applies to, the soul of Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, artists not merely talented but uniquely soul-oriented.
I should add, I've been outa action for a few weeks due to health, & have found some joy in scaring myself silly with The Haunting of Hill House & found some knowledge and super interesting stuff on ur channel, matey.
Thank you for assisting this patient on his way to recovery 😊😊
get well soon!
@@cwehden
Cheers, matey 🖒🖒
Eva would NOT have aloud this recording out, or any of the night she was recording at Blues Alley!...WHY? She been sick with the flu and a cold fo rover a week! She didn't want to cancel the gig, so she played on. According to a couple interviews from those close to her, said she wouldn't have approved of any of the recordings taped thaat night!
Based on the videos I've watched already, I think your top favorite female singers are Eva and Adele... Her tone and how she sings portrays a lot of emotions that connects to whoever listens to her... I've checked one of your videos that her album is one of your favorite though...
"Over the Rainbow": She works her way through the troubles, then takes off and sails.
Shes soo under rated
Eva is my favorite female singer, my favorite male singer is David Phelps, do a reaction to him singing No More Night.
Loved the way you explained the nuances and detailing here, Carl :)
The Charismatic Voice does a superb critical analysis of Eva Cassidy's Over the Rainbow.
Great insights
I like her voice pure singer Eva cassidy
Now do Eva Cassidy - Autumn Leaves (black and white version) Like the one you're playing
Perfect
You're right about doing it right, not complicating it. Music SHOULD, evoke emotion, draw you in.
It's like hearing a great guitar lead verses some idiot who thinks he's great because he can soullessly play fast.
Tears
WHAT HAS ALWAYS ATTRACTED ME TO EVA'S VOICE AND BEAUTY IS HER ABILITY TO REVEAL MY VULNERABITIES....AND I'M NOT A PUSH OVER.
Try Jackie Oates , particular her lullaby songs
do "chaap tilak" from "coke studio"!!!
As a vocal coach reacting to a vocalist, maybe listen more than trying to predict what she’s going to do. One thing Eva’s not and thats predictable. It’s called soul which is something that you can’t teach.
This dude is all but oblivious to the artistic genius of Eva Cassidy. LOL
Your approach seems very formulaic...great for singers without the natural ability to communicate what they feel. Truly natural is to sing what or how you feel. Lots of singers follow the formula but say absolutely nothing.
Technique is needed no matter if people can explain it or not. Language is no doubt a very crude tool to explain technique but sadly it's the only one we have other than actual technique itself.
@@cwehden True if we think think of great musicians effectively communicating their intent to the listeners - no words but just music yet still effective. But I have heard hundreds of singers over the years, despite obviously mimicking someone or following "the formula" communicate nothing to me at all. Just another me too or also-ran. That is all I could be 99% of the time so gave it up. I wanted to be the greatest singer ever but could not be, which was totally unrelated to my voice. I still appreciate vocalists that affect me somehow...take me to another place, time or feeling.
@@glenngarza1845 Any singer with good technique will connect with audiences generally, this is universal though for many of us very hard to achieve. That being said sure some people are really just copying they aren't really on a quest to forge a new way of looking at things which is a much more complicated problem to solve than just mimicking. That unique quality only comes when a singer is standing alone with enough long term experience and skill and creative thinking to put together something new, this is rarer today because frankly popular music has been explored more than it had been 50 years ago.
Please dont scaot in may ears..stop the musikk and talk anf sing but not hven she singing..damm
Your a fkn arsehole...trying to page Cassidy as a bicept curl...you will amount to nothing.....analysing her showxs you are very inept...theres a thing when you hear certain singers?.you will never understand...sing a song smartarse...you cant..explain it all away...you cant sing...you speak but cant communicate a word in song...
Not as.good as so hyang
LOL.
There is no sneering with derision emoji afaik but you really need one.
I listened to several of her songs and found nothing worth revisiting ... typically the too slow tempo drained the meaning and emotion from songs as she performed some really irritating massaging and elongating of words....Over the Rainbow was terrible...Judy Garland delivered the definitive performance in 2.12 and Cassidy tortures the song over an interminable 5.46.....if you didn’t know the song already , you would have difficulty grasping what Cassidy’s was singing about...You certainly wouldn’t care....Listen to Garland’s 1939 performance in Wizard of Oz and compare it to this ...it’s not even close
It's not for eveyone. Sound affects the brain in some mysterious way. This version of the song was what brought attention ans started this Eva myth. I personally adore her voice but i can see your point.
Voice of an angel. Not everyone can hear it
You missed it all. Sorry for your loss.
I AM A JUDY GARLAND FAN AND I SAY SHE DOES NOT HOLD A CANDLE TO EVA! YOU ARE NOT ONLY STUPID BUT AN IDIOT! I HOPE YOU LOSE YOUR HEARING WHEN YOU GET OLDER BECAUSE YOU DO NOT APPRECIATE GREAT MUSIC AND SOUND!!!!!!!!!
I wonder why it is that some people take something that so many others find sublimely beautiful and moving and feel the irrepressible need to defecate all over it. What malign energy fills their hearts, and from where does it come? It's one thing to withhold praise for a performance one doesn't like or even, if one absolutely must, to offer informed, objective criticism of perceived shortcomings in the effort. But to go out of one's way to savage what untold numbers of us unequivocally hold dear bespeaks a nature or condition at least bordering on the pathological, don't you think?
