    My dr told me I’m reversing my osteopenia which is the beginning of osteoporosis … I take D3, and a lot of other supplements and N Acetyl cysteine or NAC … BUT I still work and I’m 70… a lot of my work is lifting.. I also stack a lot of wood for my own personal use.. lifting a lot forces your bone to start producing new bone cells.. my dr was blown away but she knows I read a lot n take many supplements….

      @@821dbt59 I take D3, bromeline sp? From pineapple.. good quality fish oil, ( not from costco), celery seed, glucosamine SULPHATE, not the HCI form, high doses of vitamin C, magnesium malate.. just start researching herbs n other supplements you come across in the ‘inflammation’ dept at health food store.. it’s very important to detox n get rid of parasites! We are the only country in the world where the doctors don’t have their patients get rid of parasites which we all have.. other countries twice a year take herbs for a parasite cleanse.. I’ve read several places that have said that if you have pets you have parasites but you also get parasites from your food … I also take herbs to detox my liver because I got severely poisoned about 10 years ago from an enhanced MRI with ( gadolinium).. I’ve never been the same.. woke up that night n my body was literally locked up n I was in the most excruciating pain like I had no idea any human could ever live thru.. it took me going to the ER about 7 times in the next several months.. no one knew what was wrong. Eventually I hound a rheumatologist bout 45 miles from me n she diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease… after the initial shock wore off I started reading like a maniac. !! My dr told me I knew way more about this disease than her but. He didn’t agree with me as to all the stuff I take.. her drugs didn’t hardly help at all n basically we are all on our own dealing with serious health issues.. I’m so glad I took the time to research n didn’t depend solely on my doctor.. I’m actually doing a lot better n I’m almost 71… but you must also be willing to look at your diet n be willing to change when necessary.. oh ! I also take 1/3 tsp of baking soda in the am.. it alkalizes your system.. anything that’s acid in your system will create inflammation.. also in the evening I’ll take 1tbsp of apple cider vinegar in some water.. do not take it at the same time as when you take baking soda.. it’ll fizz up ALOT !! The vinegar should be raw n unpasteurized n with the ‘mother’ at the bottom. The mother is what has many important enzymes that are very hood for your body… when people ask me what all I take I usually tell them what I can remember but frankly it’s a lot n I don’t remember everything n often times I change things but the things I listed here are my regular things I do for myself.. after I send this I’ll prob remember other things.. if you have a serious health issue you must take charge of your recovery yourself….I continue to read n research all of the time to understand this hideous disease.. I spent almost 2.5 years in bed. My house turned upside down n beautiful yard looks like a white trash dump.. hurts my heart .. lately tho I’ve been feeling pretty chipper n I’ve been cleaning inside n sorting thru my piles of clothes n stuff , throwing stuff out n raking leaves n trying to make myself do what I used to do I can enjoy coming home … I’m hoping to God I can continue doing this.. thank you for asking me because as I write you I relive my struggles n sharing my journey makes me appreciate myself so much more than I have been.. 😅

    Thank you for all the great information. Watching from Ireland. Was born with a congenital heart defect called a myocardial bridge and scoliosis. Recently diagnosed with osteopenia and I have debilitating back pain. So glad to hear you saying some supplements not recommended because they contain too much calcium. It’s heart warming when the medical profession wants to help people who are struggling due to bad health so thank you so much

    Thanks for the info. Appreciate hearing about studies, and your analysis of them. I want to chime in with a comment, . "Fear" isn't the best word to use. However, I strongly object to the cruelty of how cows are treated, both dairy and beef.
    After I overcame my reluctance to look at the reality of what happens, how cows and calves are treated, now I know better, so I can choose to do better, and make better ethical choices.
    I am very interested in my bone health, and finding ways to strengthen my bones Thanks for listening and considering this point of view. I'm not the only one who feels this way.

    The animations on this was incredible and you are great at making the content interesting.
    If you moved that clip from 8:15-9:20 to the very beginning of the video (right after 0:35) on all of your videos your channel would be perfect. I would call that clip the "1-minute discussion" which includes the product recommendation. 2nd the intro and summary. 3rd the literature review. 4th advertisements and subscriptions. 5th recommend a related video etc

    I took a supplement with the correct type of calcium that you recommended and looking to eat the proper calcium foods. The supplement I took appears to helped my back pain. Will be eating the yogurts you mentioned. Keto yogurt has a protein in it with 35% in calcium. I did enjoy it. I would prefer to help Osteo naturally. Will listen to your master class ASAP. Thank you.

      Where do you recommend foods AND best supplements for bone? You mentioned Jarrow but don’t recommend it. ?? What do you recommend for less calcium. Thank you

      @@mi2maui I recently had a great meeting with AlgaeCal and got some clarification from their research team. Their whole food source of Ca is a great choice.

      @@Dr_DougLucasThey are super, super expensive though. I looked into Algae-Cal and it is something like $79 per month. I can't afford 80 bucks a month, sadly, if it is a good product.

    After being diagnosed Osteoporosis I was prescribed Calcium-D tablets, 2 per day. I started with 2 but decreased it to 1 for a while then intermittently for about 2 years. I have always consuming lots of Calcium rich foods as I understood you can have too much. Later, after having another blood test, it was discovered I did have too much Calcium in my blood. They now prescribe Vit D without calcium. Lesson….you should always be given a blood test before taking Calcium.

      When I take a calcium supplement, I develop kidney stones. This has happened to me at least three different times.

      @@roseamber7342 I've seen this occur in some people. This is one of the reasons why we recommend whole food sources whenever possible. AlgaeCal as a whole food source may be an option as well. It rides the fence between whole food and supplement.

      I think vitamin K2 handles that
      It takes calcium out of soft tissue
      And puts into bone

      Linus pauling suggested the minimum ratio of mag to cal was 2 to 1 ..ie at least twice as much mag as cal. No supplements use that ratio despite all the research on calcium being really bad as a supplement ... and while getting it into you requires v d ...getting it from the blood to the bones requires vit k2 which they don't give anyone. Also every child did that science experiment where leeching protien from bone makes bones brittle and leeching calcium makes bones soft not brittle. It's bizzare and makes so little sense to me.

    This is good to hear. Most evenings I have been preparing a bowl of pain greek yogurt with some maple syrup (it has far higher levels of fully dissolved trace minerals than honey), and putting it in the fridge, for my grandmother's breakfast. She adds whatever toppings she is in the mood for. I chose it because it was high in protein, but this gives another reason to use it.
    She also has been eating prunes daily her whole life, her mother also did shots of prune juice. We joke that this might be her secret to longevity, she is 95 and still able to walk and do any daily task that doesn't require heavy lifting. Sadly, probably due to her age, her bone mineral density is -2.9. I did find out she was taking the wrong calcium for a long time, since unfortunately my uncle didn't figure out which type she should be taking.
    We have most of what she needs now, but we will be ordering direct from either nowfoods or jarrow in the future, and will be completely avoiding getting anything off amazon, since they have been caught selling fake supplements before.

    Have you seen the study that links climate to osteoblasts?
    Lab mice in a hot environment seem to build bone at a much faster rate than mice in a colder environment.

    I coincidently bough the bone up from Amazon, while trying to find a Ca supplement since I was diagnosed three years ago. I cannot tolerate Ca supplementation well, specially the carbonate kind it makes me severely constipated. I tried other citrate, and still gives a moderate constipation problem. I found this with good reviews, and decided to take it, but instead of 2 caps with every meal as recommended, I only take 3 caps daily distributed in my two main meals a day. After watching this video, I am now glad I got it. I hope that I can see a benefit at the next scan because I do not want the medications. Thanks for the information!

      @200Nora hi, my homeopath first put me on BoneUp. But recently she switched me to Raw Calcium. Made by garden of life. By taking that and a few other supplements daily, I’ve increased my bone density in my spine by 12%. That’s better than what the horrible drugs can do. Some supplements and exercise seems to work.       @200Nora I might also add. Not to be discouraged. My numbers got worse, before they got better. Change in numbers is very slow, so don’t be discouraged if your next dxa says no improvement or a little worse. I didn’t see the 12% improvement until my 3 rd dxa. I believe the exercises have a lot to do with reversing it. 💪❤️

    I mix RAW Eggs in w/ Yogurt....#1 Best Protein w/ GREAT Calcium...Add Blueberries , etc...Stir w/a spoon...Add a little Pink H. Salt for 84+ minerals / electrolytes... Tks Dock..Great vid. ⭐

    I wasn't sure were to put this but I wondered if you had heard of KoACT? It is a calcium collagen chelate which is reported to be better than calcium or collagen taken together or alone.

      I took a look. There are some studies supporting the use but it’s not real impressive. Possibly better but I’d like to see more studies. The only human study still showed bone loss with KoACT, Vitamin D and Ca.

    I am vegan . I have lactose intolerance. I did just find Fage yogurt at the store today that is lactose free. I thought I would give it a try. I am 74 and have osteopenia recent diagnosis. I have always been very active. I use NAC if I feel like I am getting ill. . Very interested in your findings on that topic. I am a retired RN Cardiac rehabilitation. Thank-you for your information on this topic.

    I drink Kukicha tea which is suppose to have 13 times more calcium than a glass of milk. It is also has minerals and is a great antioxidant. 😊

    I prefer Lithothamnium Calcareum, a plant calcium which is proven to rebuild bones. you can keep dairy products, they are hard to digest.

    Great information I didn't know! I consume a lot of dairy I believe - milk, greek yoghurt and occasionally, kefir. I was made to understand that milk binds iron, seems like there are studies out there that says this, but am not sure which study. So I try to not consume anything dairy during meal or immediately after meal, allowing time for absorption of iron. I am mildy anemic due to thalessemia trait, so I've to be careful.     My oh my. Its interesting to note how many criticisms are posted, rather an unusually high amount . I wonder if this a quality associated with those who get osteoprosis? I'm critical myself, and have osteo, so I found it interesting.

      Haha, interesting perspective. We get some negative comments but compared to other communities I’ve been a part of I think our community is great, mostly positive and looking for answers. Remember that fear causes all kinds of emotions to bubble over and osteoporosis causes plenty of fear. We are here to help resolve that.

    Finally found a supplement from Source Naturals with just MBP 40 mg and nothing else. The lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase was only in 1 product I could find Probioplex by Metagenics which is recommended for intestinal health. They both contain magnesium stearate which some clinicians strongly recommend avoiding. Trying to find a supplement that has only what you want, in the correct amount, with fillers that aren't problematic? Good luck.

    I am a recent subscriber, and I am enjoying your content. I have osteoporosis and was put on prolia injections by an endocrinologist. Should I be under the care of an orthopedist rather than endocrinologist, I don’t feel he is very well read on prolia, based on what I have gotten from yiur content the last couple of days.

      No, most orthopedic surgeons do not manage bone care and know less about the drugs than does your endocrinologist. Some ortho practices have a fracture liaison service which can be helpful but you would have to see if you have access to that type of practice.

      I read that you need to take K2 and D3 to avoid the calcification in the arteries, so that when you take calcium, it will be directed to your bones and not your arteries.

    You have to take Vit K also, because too much calcium can cause strokes and heart attacks. I take Walmart Vit K and take 2 caps per day(yes, I know walmart vits aren't the best, but vit K is pretty expensive).

    Very interesting. I recommend your channel to my friends. Have you done a study on red light -
    infrared light on osteoporosis? Also if bone density is lost quickly due to a inactivity as a result of a trauma (eg broken neck and back -5 months with no weight bearing ) can it be improved quicker than bone density that has gradually got worse?

      I have a pending script on red light! I can give you a peak sneak of the outcome which is that there is no compelling evidence to support the modality. It has other health benefits but don’t think it will make much of a direct impact on your bones.

      @@Dr_DougLucas Thanks for this video. I fractured my spine on Dec. 16, 2023. I started using infrared therapy on it about a week after it happened. About a week after I started using it, I noticed significantly less pain. Today, January 28, 2024, I am feeling quite well. I can't tolerate pain medication of any kind, so for this to heal as rapidly as it did makes me think the red light had something to do with it. Maybe I am off base, but I feel that because my body did repair the broken bone, I can restore some of the bone loss I've had. I know I will never have the bones I had at age 20, but I can restore some bone and continue to do all the right things to live a normal life.
      I did see two spine surgeons who recommended that I start the drugs. Both of them spent very little time with me--to them, I am just another post-menopausal woman with osteoporosis who needs drugs. Phooey! I plan to fight this with everything I have. I appreciate all the information you provide. Based on your videos, I will have to make one major tweak to my diet, and that is to eat fish and chicken after 40 years of vegetarianism.
      I feel great other than my osteoporosis diagnosis. This morning when I got out of bed, for the first time since the fracture, I felt absolutely no pain anywhere in my body. And that's exactly how I felt prior to the fracture. I am confident I can return to that state, with the occasional aches and pains that all aging bodies experience.

    So 40mg on BMP was the dose. Say 1L of milk has already 200mg of LP and LF, doesn't mean that just a glas of milk (250lm) has more LP+LF than the dose in the studies? And if you eat cheese that's only 25 grams of swiss cheese?

      I think you may be over estimating the quantity of LP andLF in dairy.
      The concentration of lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase can vary widely depending on factors such as the source of the milk, the breed of the cow, and the feed. However, pasteurization does generally reduce the levels of these enzymes and proteins.
      In raw milk, lactoferrin concentrations typically range from 0.2 to 0.7 mg/mL, while lactoperoxidase concentrations can range from 2 to 30 mg/L. Pasteurization, particularly high-temperature, short-time (HTST) methods, can reduce these levels by about 50% or more, depending on the conditions.
      Where did you get 200mg/L?
      I’d love to know more!

    I have not had a chance yet to look at all your videos, though I have marked them. Would you comment on a book by Amy J Lanou, "building bone vitality"? It seems to say the opposite of what you are saying ( based on what I have seen of your videos so far).

      I haven’t read it but the summary shows a combo of the same research that those who are opposed to dairy, meat and a protein forward diet always use. Acid base balance. I have several videos refuting these studies. Proof is in the pudding. Diets that avoid meat result in increased fracture risk. Not much else to say here.

      The Lanou book seems to argue their viewpoint from several angles. One is that the countries with the most fractures eat the most animal protein. Then they cite studies they say show an increase in urinary calcium and acidity after eating animal protein, and that the calcium comes from bones.     I, too, will continue to just consume dairy.. it doesn’t bother me and unsweetened yogurt with fresh berries is my only dessert treat!
    I was hoping you could provide ideas for supplements that are just the MBP. I see them on Google, but it is hard to know which brand is actually legit, tested and actually has the substance listed! There are so many garbage supplements! And I don’t want to take calcium supplements. I eat dairy, have a whey protein powder some days and a collagen powder daily. All my other supplements I do use have taken forever to find because of research into the brand to see if it is tested, legitimate and certified. Ugh! I was hoping you would have a better suggestion on this..and a dose direction. In looking, there are so many! So, as usual, I’m left to do my own research. The Jarrow brand has too much calcium added as a filler…no to that.

    So I have a unique health challenge. Sever osteoporosis since 2014, took meds from 2016 to 2019. I had to stop due to gastric issues which have worsened to the point now malabsorption so no matter what I take or eat (good stuff) I'm not really reaping benefits. Now losing bone around my dental implant, loss of keratin has degrade arouns the site. Getting ready to have oral surgery to try and fix it. BUT my osteoporosis has gotten worse due to malabsorption. I cannot drink milk and even have to watch ice cream to some degree. I don't partake much anymore. I do a 1/4 to 1/2 cup yogurt with some fruit in the am, then a decent protein breakfast. I cook hommade meals, salads, etc. Still no help. I'm looking for ANYTHING that might help me.

    Was recently diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism driving severe osteoporosis. From a bone density test, the T scored for the spine is -4.9. Any advice would be greatly appreciated from you, doctor. I don't want to take Bisophosphonate medicines. Thank you. 🙏

      First step for my patients would be to treat the underlying cause. No effort to build bone will match the negative effects of the a hyperparathyroidism. Step two then is coming up with a comprehensive plan to build bone. You are in a very low starting point so anabolic drugs would be on the plate for me but in addition to a comprehensive program.       Just a few weeks ago I had 1 parathyroid removed as it was malfunctioning because of a benign growth. I hope this has sorted the high calcium in my blood. Doc said it might take 4-6 months befor things are back to normal.

    I wanted this to work for me. I do have a reaction to casein, stuffy nose. I realized after taking a half of bottle that I was waking up with a stuffy nose again. I stopped taking MBP for a week and the stuffiness is gone. Not worth it for me to get a sinus infection. Blood tests show I have some sort of reaction to casein.

    I didn’t see a link to what you use for your patients. I want MBP without calcium to see if it will help reverse osteopenia. I did find one that is a 40mg MBP. Would that be a sufficient dose? I have also optimized my Vitamin D and take K2.

    Re Jarrow Formulas, Ultra Bone-Up 1200mg .. serving size is 2 tablets. What if I take half the dosage to reduce the calcium to just 600mg? Will I still get the benefit that I need since everything else will be cut by half as well?
    (Suggested dosage is 2 tablets 3 times a day; I could perhaps reduce it to 1 tablet 3 times a day.)

    Hi. Regarding the bone up, I thought the body can’t absorb more than 500 mg of calcium at a time and this has 1200 mg? Is that why you don’t use it with your patients?

      I brake my calcium pills in four pieces and, take a piece daily. Approximately 375 mg.

      It’s 1,200 for certain products and for 6 tabs I think. We use different products to balance the need but most of our patients aren’t getting more than 500mg total Ca from supplements. Some are getting none.

    Pasteurized milk doesn’t help osteoporosis because the enzymes that help absorb calcium is cooked. Luckily we still have cows and you can buy one or coop. Grass fed cows will also produce vitamin K2 which helps in the absorption of calcium and building of bones. Raw milk also helps in the digestion of Cholesterol so it doesn’t stick to the veins.

    Hi. I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. I also have hypercalcimia from hyperparathyroidism, and four years ago suffered a broken femur. It is challenging to find out if i should take a different approach to osteoporosis with these other things going on. Right now,i am doing weight bearing exercise, drinking a green drink of spirulina, barley grass and collagen. I also switched out coffee for macha tea. I dont want to take the drug ordered by my dr..because it causes your jaw bone to deteriorate. Also, i hear conflicting reports if i should take calcium supplements or not. Any advice or guidance?

I am actually going to research the surgery and see if correcting the parathyroid problem then allows the bone to absorb more calcium instead of it hanging up in my blood. Did your Endo suggest the slitting your throat surgery?

      Hi there. Hyperparathyroidism that doesn't correct with optimizing vitamin D in my opinion should be considered for surgical intervention. It's very difficult to combat naturally or pharmacologically.

      I was diagnosed with hyper parathyroid a few years ago, and surgery to remove it in Dec 2019. Since then my bone density has increased! I was 69 at the time. I would strongly recommend getting another opinion regarding parathyroid surgery.

    Please talk about DEXA underestimating bone density in small females. I am 5'7" and 114 lbs. Though I do all the bone building reccomdations I still measure osteoporosis on dexa......I don't believe it is accurate.

    What do you think about "Bone Matrix" by Heart and Soil supplements? The serving size is 3 capsules, but I only take 1 capsule, which should come in about 250 mg of calcium from MCHA. Thank you

    Should post menopausal women consider tamoxifen for bone health? I took it for five years with no side effects to minimize chance of breast cancer recurrence. Is there any harm in continuing indefinitely?

      I’ve recently been taken off tamoxifen after nearly ten years. I was told originally that I’d be on it forever. But have finally been able to get back to having an actual oncologist appointment who has now said updated research is showing that over ten years there is currently no evidence of tamoxifen benefits for prevention of recurrence, although that was formerly thought we were going to have to do.. Recheck with your team if you have one. It’s been a hell of a fight to see an oncologist again for me I can tell you.
      My bones are utterly screwed though, was eventually able to fight through to a bone specialist but unfortunately the only one available was a complete idiot - probably why he was available, so now I’m back to square one. I’m more likely to end up with a medical degree myself than a decent doctor on that front it seems.

      @@dees3179 It's a challenge for sure. I wanted to point out that tamoxifen as a SERM has likely been beneficial for your bones. It responds similarly to Raloxifene which is shown to reduce fracture risk and reduce recurrence of or incidence of breast cancer.

    I have been taking MBP 40 mg from Source Naturals for 2 moths. I have also ordered a powder supplement called Milk Protein Concentrated from Fonterra NZ. On the label they say a portion of 33 g MPC contains 766 mg Ca, a lot of minerals and 18 aminoacids, eg. L-Glutamic acid 5g, L-Lysine 1 g, L-Proline 1g, L-Glycine 0.5g. Do you think I could benefit from more than 33 g MPC per day or less?

    I have a degree of lactose intolerance. Worse, I become horribly congested, even with fat free yogurt if I eat too much. (I tolerate cultured milk products better than regular milk or cheese.)
    Right now I'm in week four of no dairy whatsoever, coughing and working on constantly emptying heavy mucus from both throat and sinuses. Bottle 3 of Robitussin, too.
    I will have a DEXA scan in two days because of the terrible pain in my hip that's developed over the past six month. X-rays were taken yesterday. Probably arthritis, which I have in my shoulders and right knee.
    If I have osteoporosis or ostreopenia, what supplement(s) should I take?

      Hi Sandi,
      Sorry to hear of your trouble. Mucus production with dairy is a sign of intolerance. In our patients we use a test called a Dairy Zoomer by Vibrant America to look at the various proteins in dairy and see if any can be tolerated. Regarding supplementation this requires a deep dive into biomarkers and custom plans are needed to adequately supplement a well designed diet.

      @@Dr_DougLucas Thank you do much, Doctor. I have never heard of this test and will ask my doctor about it. Also, x-rays and the DEXA taken late last week show advanced arthritis in both hips BUT no osteoporosis or osteopenia. The latter was a very pleasant surprise for me as I'm 76.

      My hip x-ray showed advanced arthritis in both hips. Fortunately, my DEXA showed no osteopenia or osteoporosis, which was a big--but happy-- surprise. I do have arthritis in both shoulders resulting from minor accidents decades ago.

    I take Omeprazole 2 q day….hx of Barrett’s Esophagus….is there a bone strengthening supplement I can take that will be absorbed and reverse my osteoporosis?

      AOR is considered one of the best supplements in Canada. This company has done tons of research. It is expensive. There are lots of different types of bone products through them too. You can supplement with it in low doses too. The only issue I have with it is there is other ingredients in them that have not been truly proven to help with bones and or have strontium in them which I dont want to take. I dont take calcium in supplements at all except on vacation when I cant control my diet as well. I am big on the grass fed no chemicals, no sugar whey protein isolate. I think it is better than milk. I take this on vacation with me and k7 etc.

    I don’t tolerate milk, maybe yogurt but haven’t had one in more than 20 years!
    I am kinda afraid of trying... but I fear I might become very frail. In 2020 all throughout 2021 I had to go through lots of medications and antibiotics and my teeth suffered a lot, ... now I’m trying to strengthen my bone and teeth.
    Could dairy improve enamel as well?
    Also, I have heard dairy contains dead bacteria from pus? Or even blood from when the cows have inflamed breasts. Is it true?
    Milk is also pasteurized and homogenized which makes it harder to digest... isn’t it true?
    I hope you can give me some clarity and help me in making wise decisions.

      I’m not a dairy expert but I think I can shed some light here.
      Dairy farming capacity has caused some major changes to the way that dairy is produced. Pasteurization and homogenization has changed the quality and benefits of dairy without doubt. The surge of raw dairy production has begun to show the benefit of alternatives. Some of the proteins like lactoferrin are denatured with pasteurization. These are the proteins that impact bone the most. Whether dairy is tolerated or not is a different story regardless the quality and type of dairy consumed.

    How much is too much calcium? It’s confusing to hear the opposite info take calcium but not too much. I had been on 1000 mg calcium in divided doses and then the whole calcium game was shown to present risks of thrombosis both heart and brain (aka heart attacks and strokes)
    Now I’m taking Garden of Life’s bone growth supplements. Working on simple stomping three times a day and making sure I’m not dehydrated. I’m trying to protect my kidney function. So I’m hoping all this will eventually lead to improvement in my dexa. I have reason to believe measuring my dexa right at the worst part of my degenerated scoliosis would potentially be unreliable. It can be falsely impacted measuring right at my worst torsion and degenerated spinal scoliosis. I have a orthopedic surgeon a pain specialist and my primary doctor.
    I’m going to watch your video this week and see if there anything your doing at your clinic that isn’t being done at The University of Washington where most of my specialists are. Next time I get a dexa I think I need them to measure it in a bone that’s not got any degenerative changes. The good news is despite the hip damage and the chondoplasty they did to remove debris and shave any damaged areas to promote healing. I had so much cartilaginous debris in my hip. It was causing friction and inflammation/pain in the effected hip. My other hip has nerve damage so it’s been weaker than my other hip until that other hip was damaged in a car accident.

      Re BMP. I read on the AOR site that bmp reduces the osteoclasts cells. So does that mean you maintain more brittle bone? Similar to a bisphosphonate? Hmmm. Not sure about BMP.

      @@LesleyMowat The impact of lactoferrin in BMP does reduce OC activity but not to the same extent as bisphosphonates. Natural approaches don't poison the cells just influence them.

      Probably not. Whey proteins are highly processed and contain little else.

      A study showed no benefit to bone with whey protein. A newer one showed total protein from plant and animal sources is beneficial. But look it up and decide.

    I have a question - I happen to love milk, have never taken supplements on a regular basis. Do I get the same benefit from drinking a glass of milk a day, say versus taking this supplement? I was told 5 years ago that I have osteoporosis after having a bone density scan when I turned 65(it's something the medical system does here in Canada). I was quite shocked and am still not sold on this scan. I am scheduled to go for another one in a couple weeks(my doctor had requested a followup scan a year ago). I will be interested to see if the things I've been doing in the last five years(more walking and I've been taking the odd supplement now and then like vit D3 in the winter months last couple of years) have helped my numbers. I am not on any Rx medications, am generally very healthy. And we try and eat a well balanced diet, don't eat a lot of junk or drink pop(ever) or alcolhol to excess(a glass of wine or beer once in a blue moon).

      The lactoferrin is destroyed in the pasteurization process so it depends on the type of milk. Raw dairy can deliver the same as a supplement but you need a few cups of milk to get one serving in a MBP serving.

    Most of the research I have been doing indicates that you should take K2 (mk7) along with your D3 - the K2 directs the calcium in your body to your bones & not your arteries - also recommended is Magnesium - they say most people are deficient

      K2 MK-7 I take also, but it lasts in your body , 120 mcg 72 hours, so I take it twice a week, and it is fat soluble. I was told I have a fatty liver. So think this should be mentioned. I take Calcium, Magnesium, D3, Collagen, all essential for osteoporosis. Lactose intolerant, so use a dairy free milk, take probiotics also. Overall pretty decent diet, so doing all I can. My protein amount I focus on too.

    I have a couple of bone spurs Was told many years ago too much calcium can cause that . True ?? Do supplements really work building bone or just foods like yogurts ? It gets confusing try to sift thru all the information out there .

      Bone spurs are the result of stress generally. Not too much calcium. However, if someone has too much calcium they may see it deposited places they don’t want it like in tendons. So…. It could be either. Optimizing diet and nutrient supplementation would help. Some nutritional supplements do show benefit for bone health but generally we take a bigger picture approach using our optimization pyramid framework.

    Dairy foods are staple in my diet it's more affordable than meat but I do eat meat when I can ,, I've heard cheese is very good for bones but of all the many varieties of cheese which is the best for bone health??

      If dairy is tolerated it can be great.
      Cheeses that are fermented and higher in protein are great. Here are some examples. Goat and sheep versions can be great alternatives too.
      1. Parmesan: This Italian cheese is one of the highest in protein content and is also well-aged.
      2. Gruyère: A Swiss cheese that is rich in protein and often used in cooking.
      3. Pecorino Romano: Another Italian cheese, made from sheep's milk and high in protein.
      4. Gouda (Aged): The protein content increases as the cheese ages.
      5. Cheddar (Aged): Like Gouda, the protein content in cheddar increases with aging.
      6. Emmental: Known for its characteristic holes, this Swiss cheese is also protein-rich.
      7. Manchego: A Spanish cheese made from sheep's milk that is high in protein.
      8. Asiago: Available in various stages of aging, the protein content is good, especially in the well-aged versions.
      9. Swiss Cheese: A general category that is usually high in protein.
      10. Provolone: An Italian cheese that has a reasonable protein content, particularly when aged.

    Re Jarrow Bone Up. You said that it "has too much calcium" but the ingredients label says 333.3 mg of elemental calcium at 26% of daily requirement. That does not seem like too much. It seems like not enough. And there is no evidence on the ingredients label that the product contains MBP. Confused.

      Yes. Grass fed whey protein isolate powder no sugar is very good to use for calcium and protein. I have 3 scoops a day. Great way to get both into your diet. It is pretty good for you. The Schinoussa brand and Allmax all natural one.

      @@LesleyMowatI'm doing same. Organic grass fed pasture raised whey protein powder for shakes and bars. I do this to up my protein intake. Because at 140 lbs I should be getting 140 grams protein a day. I'm able to eat about 60gm of protein per day from food. It takes allot of eating.

I eat as much by food as I can then have the whey protein. Some days I get in more grams of protein by food. It is a lot! Studies show a lot of good benefits from consuming good quality whey protein.

    My vit D level is 52. My dr wants me to take 10,000 IU s of vit D to reach a level of 70-100. Is that safe to take not being a water soluble vitamin?

    I took mbp for 6 months few years ago. I had GI upset that time ,not sure it was related to mbp.
    Two years later,I was diagnosed IBD.
    MBP seems beneficial to my osteopenia. My L hip T score improved from -2.4 to-1.8 in 2 years. Of course I have been taking Vitamin D,Calcium and K2 and doing regular exercises.
    I had DEXA last month ,L hip T score was -2.2. I had 6 month steroid treatment for IBD last year.
    Dr Lucas, is it still possible to reverse my osteopenia ? Thank you.

    I can't eat dairy products. Cannot digest dairy & they feed any inflammation I might have. I try to get calcium through other foods which I find difficult at times. So every now & again I take a calcium tablet made from sea weed: lithothamnion Calcareum

    I love homemade full fat yogurt, but I drain the whey for about a day. It's like cream cheese when I'm done, and I have to add some water back in.

      Keep liquid from the yogurt. It has enzymes and good bacteria. Add to a smoothie. You can also easily make your own yogurt.

      It causes water retention for me too. I can tolerate cheese just fine though. Go figure? I have no idea. This just started for me about a year ago. Peanut butter and shrimp do it to me too now. Never had any food intolerances in all my 55 years until now!
