In November, 2019 I bought a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with the 5.7 Hemi V8. I originally wasn't going to get the Hemi because of increased initial cost to the vehicle and fuel economy. But I changed my mind at the last minute. It wasn't because of the towing capability. I wasn't planning on towing. I liked the idea of extra torque. Also, I had never owned a V8 in my life. I'm 70 years old and tend to keep my vehicles for a long time. I figured this was probably my last chance to ever drive a V8. So I went for it! I'm glad I did. For me, having a V8 is more fun to drive. I like the idea of when I pull out of a shopping center parking lot onto a busy street with legal speeds of 45-50 miles per hour, I push the gas pedal and it goes! I don't worry about anyone driving up my back door because I can't get going fast enough. I drive in Sportmode almost all the time. When driving at a consistent highway speed on the Interstate, I will leave it in Ecomode. The only issue I've had is when in Sportmode, it occasionally downshifts hard. Sometimes it's very hard and startles anyone riding in the Jeep. It doesn't do it all the time which makes it hard to diagnose. I've raised the issue to the dealer's service department but they can't find any problem. No other issues yet. But because of COVID-19 I really haven't taken any trips. And being retired, I don't have to drive to work everyday. So I only have about 4700 total miles in my first year of ownership which is unheard of in Southern California.

Yeah the transmission shifts faster and holds gears longer which increases rpm ranges causing the transmission computer to react in less than a second, the issue is all those moving parts have to mesh as fast and it locks hard, but it is not a defect. It’s slamming gears like one would in a hot rod with manual shifter.

Just saying, before I put the supercharger on my V6 2012 grand Cherokee, it accelerated VERY quickly for a heavy SUV with a V6. The V8 in my eyes is not needed (I don’t tow and occasionally I fold the back seats down and haul). I only added the supercharger because it’s not common. I basically make more power than a 5.7 right now, but even before it, it didn’t need it. It was fast AF then and it’s fast AF now.

Another great video Brad, lots of excellent points. My story is that I bought a 15 GC with the v6. Loved it, plenty of pep around town, great gas mileage and towed our pop up trailer no sweat. Then I rode in my buddy’s Hemi Ram and even jacked up and on big tires that thing would pin you in the seat. I’ve always been a gear head so I knew right then I needed a Hemi too. I found a fully loaded 17 GC with low miles during the height of lockdown and the dealer sold it to me for basically what I paid for the relatively sparsely featured, older, higher mileage v6. Now I have 2 GC. My wife loves the v6, it’s perfect for what she needs. I love the Hemi especially now that we tow a significantly heavier trailer that would have absolutely maxed out the v6 but the Hemi doesn’t even know it’s back there.
A few points about the v6, it’s tremendously capable Offroad, maybe even more so than the v8. It’s has lower gears, 3.45 vs 3.09, so with the torque multiplication I feel it makes it peppier at a lower rpm than the Hemi. The v6 feels just as fast off the line with the lower gears and can crawl better than the Hemi. The v6 also gets a higher payload on all the models. The 200lb the Hemi adds subtracts from your payload on the door sticker. So for over-landing like Dave, you can actually safely add more things to your Jeep without going over your max weight. The v6 handles better, the entire weight of the engine is even with the centerline of the front axles, the 2 extra cylinders of the Hemi are out past the front wheels and pushes the front end more in turns. Also as Brad mentioned there is room on the v6 to add onboard air. I’d rate them evenly on reliability in my experience so far. At work we drive v6 chargers that I know are driven like they’re stolen and the maintenance schedule is more of a suggestion and we have many cars well above 100k and they just keep running like a top.
The Hemi is the way to go if you tow heavy. Adding all the skid plates and offroad gear didn’t have much effect in my opinion, the biggest difference came when I swapped from street tires to the Wildpeaks. The added rolling weight affects every aspect of the driving experience. It feels slower when flooring it, feels softer in the turns and braking has been affected reigning in the extra momentum of the rotating weight. But I wouldn’t trade the v8. I’m looking forward to the next GC set to be announced on 1/7. It’s gonna have a 3rd row and slightly longer wheelbase. Only having 2 rows of seating is the only thing that I find fault with this platform.

So would you say the v6 could tow a 5000 lb boat with trailer and gear? I'm buying this car with the intent to tow a boat specifically something like a tracker v175 .

    • @srtabc123
      @srtabc123 3 роки тому +3

@@brianb3910 Absolutely. The v6 with tow package is rated to tow 6200lbs and I believe it could no sweat. We towed a 2000lb popup behind my wife’s v6 and it didn’t even know it was back there, I know it’s way lighter than your boat but the v6 didn’t struggle. Maybe if you’re going to be towing up in the mountains you might need the diesel or Hemi since the smaller engine will struggle at altitude but otherwise you’ll be fine. The Grand Cherokee is a great tow vehicle.

Had my 2014 Ecodiesel since new and it’s never missed a beat. Tows like a tractor, effortlessly overtakes at highway speeds and can get 7L per 100Ks at 90kph. The only down side is little turbo lag on takeoff and that diesel rattle (that you hardly hear in the cab). Here Australia the diesels are by far the more popular engines for 4x4s.

Great video, Brad! Thank you! As another data point: The dealer just replaced lifters in my '18 GC TH HEMI at 23k miles due to ticking sound during startup. I did get the lifetime warranty option when I purchased mine so that repair and future repairs don't cost me any "more" significant out-of-pocket money. The dealer supplied me with a rental during those couple of days that they paid for. That said, I do like my HEMI purchase, and I would do it again. There are a lot of good points throughout your video and in the comments. I have towed my 5,000+lbs. '95 XJ with my '18 GC TH HEMI. In 3-4 years, I plan on getting a trail trailer to pull behind my '18 GC TH HEMI for longer trips on the Rubicon, etc. Before I bought my HEMI, I rented a similar GC with 3.6L Pentastar... when it came to buying my own, the HEMI purchase was an easy decision for me. To elaborate, the Pentastar engine has more than enough "power," but it has to work hard to deliver it, even in daily driving. In contrast, the HEMI engine performs everyday tasks easier, doesn't have to work as hard to deliver power. Like a kid in a candy store, I'm happy that they now offer a HEMI in the wrangler trim! I've already started my savings jar ;)

all 3.6 are rated for 6200 lbs of towing with the tow package which includes heavy duty engine cooling, trans cooler, & NIVOMAT by Sachs self leveling rear suspension. I'm on my second WK2 with the 3.6. It's a reliable strong engine and has no problem on the trails. Guys are running 40" tires with this motor & trans in Wranglers with no problem. The later ZF 8 speed transmission is key to making the Pentastar a great performer. If you're towing get the V8 but if not , save your cash for beer & mods and get the V6

My 2014 3.6L had bad valve rockers right at 90,000 miles. The extended warranty I bought took care of all new rockers and new cams. The only other issues were common. Now, it's at 100,000 miles and little things are starting to break. The AC evaporator started leaking, the EVAP purge solenoid went out and both climate control actuators. All fairly inexpensive and easy to fix. The 5.7 gives you that nice lower-end torque. The 3.6 is peppy though, especially in the 2300 - 2700 RPM range. The transmission helps a lot. Sport mode is a must in certain situations.

I test drive both v6 and v8 before I bought my new GC 2020, I got the v6 because it is slightly cheaper and better gas mileage. I use it for daily drive to work and grocery store only, but because I live around the desert, I do sometimes go off road on the Sand. so having a low 4WD is needed. I am sure I made the right decision going with the V6 because I don't do any towing or hauling using my jeep. I think the only thing V8 is better because of the engine sound is kind of cool. and the v6 is very good on sands it is strong enough.

My first car was a 73 dodge dart sport with a 340 and ram air intake, followed by several ramchargers with a 318, and the 5.7 hemi in my 2011 grand Cherokee is the most awesome engine I've ever owned, including mustangs and trans ams. This engine screams and so far has been reliable, although every part you have to replace is extremely expensive. Every time I turn around I'm having to spend hundreds of dollars, and most recently I had to spend $500 for an alternator. Also I just spent almost $100 for Mobil 1 synthetic oil to make sure I don't have camshaft failure. In 30,000 miles I've spent thousands of dollars to keep it on the road. It's literally turned into a money pit .

I'm now having to add a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so, but it feels as strong as ever. I have towed trailers with it and wheeled at Moab. It has a 2 inch lift, which I really like. I'm glad I have the Hemi to tow and haul up to 7 passengers. The only downside is gas mileage.

Yet another great video, thank you. Ordered my brand new Grand Cherokee trailhawk in 2018 with the hemi. Drove both hemi and v6, both had adequate power. I've pulled 6-ft by 10-ft utility trailer load of mulch with both. There again they both did fine. Now the hemi definitely does better. To me it come down to gas mileage, versus raw power. My wife and I don't travel a lot. Generally put on around 5,000 mi a year, if that. So I chose the hemi. Most of our driving is back and forth to work around a small town,we average around 16 mi to the gallon. We did take it on a trip, from Central PA to Maine. An average 24.4 miles per gallon. Was pleasantly surprised. My niece just purchased a brand new Grand Cherokee. She has a much further commute to work, on backcountry road. So my recommendation to her was, get the v6, and stay away from air suspension. Hopefully this helps you choose, and thank.

It is now June 2022. I bought my 2018 Trailhawk 5,7 hemi in July 2018 (four years ago). I don't have many miles on it (retired and we usually drive my wife's Camry). ---- BUT ---- If I keep it below 75 on the hwy, I get 22 mpg. Around town (lots of traffic lights and stop signs) the mileage is pathetic --- 14.5 mpg. I do pull a trailer --- 18 foot IO Searay boat, and a 22 foot travel trailer (no, not at the same time!). I know they are there when pulling them, but it pulls fine. I can't imagine what it would be like pulling them with the V-6, so I am very glad I got the V8. I got all the bells-and-whistles, and the electronic are great (crash avoidance, adaptive cruise control, etc, etc). I have never used the automatic-parking feature, but all the rest are great (I love going to the apps page, and can see all the temp readings --- very calming to know I am not overheating anything while pulling the trailer, --- or to the vehicle tilt angles, etc). Sadly, there are so many 'electronic things' I have forgotten how to even use (or get to) half of them. I do get the 'hemi tick' occasionally when starting up --- not a concern. A great car!
TIP: I just found out that there is a hidden compartment (just like the passenger under-seat battery compartment) under the drivers seat. Tomorrow I will check it out ---- a great hiding place for 'little used things' (I hope).

I've got a 2017 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with the 3.6L V6 engine. I've had it for under two months, gone off-roading a half dozen times, and this is my impression: with the horsepower, the torque, and the various off-road 4x4 modes, it's quite versatile, has really good acceleration, and has powerful performance. I've had no problems when I head up to northern Wisconsin and encounter snow and ice. It does northern Wisconsin's hilly off-road trails very well indeed, and with the thaw I've cut right through those muddy trails like a knife through butter. And it's worth noting that I have the stock Trailhawk tires (Wrangler with Kevlar), which aren't even operating at peak performance because of daily wear and tear from the previous owner. And if you put the GC in Sport Mode it has some pretty serious acceleration from standstill. I'd say the V6 makes the GC a great everyday driver with pretty good fuel economy, but also an off-road 4x4 option that doesn't flinch with varied terrain. Now, I haven't take it on the off-road trails seen on this channel, so I can't speak to its performance in those conditions, but I plan to try.

I'm not sure that enough data is out to say one engine is more reliable, however, two meetups ago, a guest of Brad's had the Hemi and a tricked out exhaust. Man I could listen to that all day! If you don't tow, say more than a side by on a trailer, I think the V6 is just fine. I have the V6, and with the 8 speed, it is a beast off the line. I have gone against a number of Hemi rigs (off roading), and without blowing up Brad's skirt.... Its the driver off road... period. Brad knows his Jeep. Learned a lot from him. Yeah articulation is certainly a player, but the WKII, as I am learning, is an incredible off road machine. Nice video. And good "political" dodge on saying which one is best! Also my brothers has 187k and his lifter has been fine. My 2000 gc has the 4.7 with less hp and it pulls fine too. Gearing makes a big difference so getting a tow package or something with the shorter gears makes a big difference. Great video, thanks for sharing

@@craigtupper103 the 3.6 is a GREAT engine! I'd say pulls as good as my 4.7. It's not as torquey but the transmission really helps keep the engine in the power band. If you're hauling heavy stuff I don't think the wk2 is the best platform but if you're pulling a trailer 3500lbs or less or hauling the usually camping and offroad gear in the cabin and cargo areas I think you'll like the 3.6. I've got 196k on mine. I dropped a valve at 160k or so but it's been very good. My brother has 205k on his and he's had no engine work done. The wk2 is a very different vehicle than the wj. I love my wj with the iron rock lift. It drives smoother than my cherokee and does better off road but the wk2 does very good in its stock form and drives very nice on the road. Especially with the quadra lift suspension. I'd skip the wk and go straight to the wk2 if I were updating my grand cherokee.

I have a 2.4 regular Cherokee Trailhawk. It has WAY WAY more power than it needs off road because of the gearing. (56:1 crawl).
Honestly , the biggest concern is cooling. You're not going very fast and if it's hot out and you climb and climb and climb ... It gets a little warm . Never overheated but the transmission gets hotter for sure.
It's never power that I worry about , it's cooling - as far as engine and transmission go.

Hi Brad thank you for your video!
I have purchased my 2020 Jeep GC Trailhawk with Hemi in May 28th.I decided to take the hemi in long term because of higher reliability . My previous car was Hummer H3 3.7 liter. The main reasons why I decided to trade in my Hummer were #1 i wanted v8 engine, more power! #2 very difficult situation with finding some new parts.
I have been taking my Hummer to a lot “middle” trails, and a little bit i gave a try to my Grand Cherokee. I was not disappointed with my choice that i took Trailhawk with hemi over 4Runner Trd Pro. Great engine, pulling effortlessly, cool air suspension, drives like Range Rover and very capable, stronger transmission,Hemi “kinda” has been improved in 2017 with Hemi ticking.
But here are some moments that makes me sad 😢
#1 my hemi 0-60 times are literally 8.0 seconds average. Well i am 315 lb man and i have only 8700 miles on my GC, but i was expecting about 7 seconds, but in fact hemi 5.7 drives as fast as 3.6 pentastar...i was surprised!! Hell sometimes i see a nightmare that 3.6 is faster in 0-60 that my 5.7 😩
#2 my mpg. I try to drive always with eco mode off.Sometimes i floor my gas pedal all the way down. Right now i have 9.3 mpg,.The car is completely stock. In summer and autumn i have had 9.5-10.5 mpg. When I tried to drive very and very careful as a “sorry for that” retired old man, maximum i got is 11.5 mpg in city.. one time..
But in hwy at 70-75mpg cruising i have 22.5-23.5 mpg maximum..That is really cool!
#3 the alpine sound system.. Brad if you are reading my comment here, please let me know your equalizer settings like bass, middle and “high”(?) settings, and does you surround sound turn on or off? Thank you!
Just in my Grand Cherokee my alpine system sound poorly...my hummer h3 played better, more clear sound.
Thank you for your videos!Let God Bless You and your family!
So my overall conclusion...Overall i like my grand cherokee trailhawk with hemi) just couple moments :)

Also, near as I can tell, the 5.7 weighs about 250 lbs more than the V6, for a lot of extra weight over the front wheels.
The fact is the 5.7 is behind the times. A V6 Honda Pilot is quicker to 60 than the 5.7 GC, mainly because the bigger Pilot is almost 1000 lbs lighter. And, why does the 5.7 make 30 more hp in a RAM pickup?
Even in highway driving, keeping mpg above 20 with the 5.7 is a challenge. If you plan to commute, the V6 is probably better. I'm glad I got the 5.7 in my TH, but it's certainly not what it could be.
I'm also disappointed the next gen GC will, apparently, have the same engine line-up.

My needs don't involve towing anything. Here in Canada the Hemi option cost an extra $3,000. The 5.7 adds about 150 lbs of weight to the WK2 and only gives a extra 65 hp and 100 ft lbs of torque over the V6. Not to mention cylinder deactivation system that has caused Hemi engine issues as well as failing roller rockers destroying 5.7 V8. Just my 2 cents I will take the 295 Hp Pentastar.

The V6 models create more torque on 4Low due to differences in gearing in the transfer cases. The V8 models have more power on 4High. So it just depends on what you plan on using your Jeep for If you're towing go with the V8, If you plan on spending most of your time off road climbing things then get the v6 model for the advantages It gives you in 4Low.

Interior is definitely higher quality, gas mileage seems about the same, and the Quadra-lift is a plus IMO. The negatives vs the 4Runner: love the rear cargo lift gate window better than the GCTH, and the backup camera is better on the Toyota, and the rear tire being beneath the 4Runner is better than the GCTH having the wheel inside. Ive owned the SRT and now a 3.6 Blackhawk. Save your money and get a 3.6 unless you go full hog for the trackhawk. 3.6 isnt slow in sport mode and it goes offroad very well. The 5.7 maybe as it goes offroad but the elephant up front dont help in sand. I cant comment on the 5.7 as ive not owned one. Weight is everything. V8 sounds good though, do miss the growl but dont miss losing my licence, constant visits at the petrol station and everyone wanting to race you.
3.6 wouldnt be an issue towing 😂 i had a 3.8 wrangler and towed a camper tralier around Australia on all the offroad tracks - had not 1 breakdown or problem.
The 3.6 tick is about bad rockers, once changed with the new ones, all good. Its $2000 Aus per side if the cams need replacing / worse case scenario at a jeep dealer, wouldnt recommend anyone but the dealer or you might get the same rubbish they used years ago, so they earn $ from it, unfortunately there are still the standard cheap rockers out there. Jeep dealers wouldnt dare do install them and cover it.
If you buy a used jeep 3.6 get an after market warrenty as this covers the problem with no problem - Integrity warrenty are great, standard cover is good enough. If you buy one private check its been done - simple.
The 3.6 ticking thing isnt that bad compared to what happens with other offroad SUVs, especially Landrover, BMW, New Hilux and mazda BT50s. Its only because you want one you google about it - every vehicle has issues these days. Once the 3.6 is fixed from ticking its brilliant.

Hey Brad, really enjoy your videos, thanks so much for providing this content for the community! I just switched from a 2018 GCTH with the 3.6 V6 to a 2021 GCTH with the 5.7 V8. I was always puzzled on paper why the considerably higher displacement wouldn't bring out more power than the 360 and I didn't expect much of a power difference between the 295hp of the V6 and the 360hp of the V8, especially because both are naturally aspirated. My DD is a 2017 twin-turbo 4.4 V8 with nominally 560hp (in reality considerably more) so I always felt that the Hemi must be an extremely reliable and techincally underpowered engine.
My personal take on the two engines for the GC Trailhawk:
    1) Both are plenty sufficient for every day use
    2) For regular on road driving, you can feel the additional "oomph" of the Hemi in low RPM acceleration, bear in mind its much higher torque across the power band
    3) Fuel mileage is surprisingly close on both in my experience, definitely on highway travel at 93oct
    4) The Hemi's sound is the tamest V8 sound I have ever heard, so don't expect much of the usual V8 growl not even on cold start, I was considering tweking the exhaust but since I plan on extensive overlanding use, I like the very small "acustic footprint" of the vehicle. It really is the mildest V8 on the environmet sound wise that I know of.
    5) While the V6 was perfectly capable of taking on any of my moderate green/greenish-bluish off-road challenges, the Hemi just takes obstacles with more of a reserve sense. Higher torque can be an issue in muddy or otherwise low traction situations but the Qudratrac II system handles that very well and then you just ahve so much more reserve to work with. I found myself a lot more often "fighting" and obstacle with added accelerator on the V6 than with the ease of deliberate crawling on the Hemi. Pure joy.
    6) Surprisingly, the Hemi is overall louder than the V6 inside, especially on acceleration and doesn't necessarirly sound as effortless as you would expect from such a large displacement, relatively low output engine. On any midlevel to luxury sedan, going from a V6 to a V8 typically brings about a much more cultivated engine feel. That's not necessarily the case with the Hemi. So I am not sure if it is just psychological that the Hemi feels a tad more "planted" over the V6 not just because of the added weight.
Hope this additional input helps. Would love to meet you in person one day, only that I am way out in the North-East ;-/ But maybe at least at Rausch? ;-)
    Best,
    H.

Edit: Mine has a magnaflow exhaust and boy does it sound mean, love turning heads when I start it, you don't expect to hear that rumble from a Grand Cherokee..

What I've always thought about the idea that the 3.6 doesn't have enough power is that people that worry about that listen to non 3.6 drivers too much. My 2019 Trailhawk V6 does awesome in all conditions. It's bone stock and it's just me, so not overloaded and no trailers or anything.

Hemi tick. The early hemi’s are prone to bad lifters flattening out the camshaft. Also the newer Grand Cherokees get an 8 speed transmission which improves mpg. 2016 and up gets an improved gear shift mechanism as well.
Edit: fuel pump relay was an issue on the early jeeps and the fix seemed like a bandaid with add on relay to bypass the one that kept failing. That was a recall a while ago.

My cousin has a 2011. Had to fix cylinder related issues twice. I had the 2013, no issues until 96k, lifters causing ticking noise. Was repaired under power train warranty. I now have a 2019 GC Limited X 3.6.

Would the v6 be fine to just pull around some toys like sxs, wheelers?

  • @jaradderosa3252
    @jaradderosa3252 3 роки тому

I was a fool and got the Ecodiesel. Never again. It has had so many recalls (though luckily no failures). I do not get anywhere near the fuel economy that I was hoping or heard about. The power is fine but not worth the extra costs. Also on a separate topic, air suspension though it is nice for the adjustable ground clearance, the ride on the dirt is just garbage. Those are the 2 big changes I would not repeat.

@@ProdigalOverland Brad if you are referring to the power, it is less horsepower but double the torque. It pulls great and the turbo works super if you are at altitude. I have never thought it was slow...... diesels just don’t rev, which on the trail and normal driving is fine. The turbo lag to launch is where you notice it the most. If you are referring to the fuel economy, with mixed driving biased to hwy I get 24 mpg.

People who think you need a V8 to go off road dont go off road, and/or dont understand how low range works. My current rig has a yota 4.7 and my last rig had a 5.3. I hardly ever get past 1/4 throttle in low range. I wheel with v6 and 4cyl guys that can do way more than I can.
That being said for the ride out and back, when you've got those off road tires, lift, 2 kids, 2 dogs, and gear for a week out on the interstate a v8 is a nice luxury. Especially trying to do 75 at 10,000 feet in the Rockies. Keep in mind you can only go as fast as the 100hp 4cyl on 37s that came with you though lol.

Gearing....I changed the transfer case gears in my old Trooper and it made it feel like it had a V8 with low end torque in low range...but it still had the super weak 3.2L V6 (~160hp). In high range with 33" tires.....3rd gear over the I-70 passes in Colorado...yikes!

The V8 is not tunned for great acceleration on Grand Cherokee : I just tryed both engine (3.6 and 5.7 V8). Its really sad that the V8 is so badly tunned. So I bought a 4runner TRD offroad Premium !
