  • Hiking Southshore Campground at Detroit Lake State Park in Oregon and reviewing the Campsites each individually for quality! This was done on 5/20/23, a week BEFORE the official start of the Summer Camping Season, and I was the only human being there!
Campsites can be booked at Recreation.gov.

Thank you for this review! I was stressed about finding the best spot, and this is perfect. They really don't give great pictures. I appreciate this sooooo much

still jumping through the play list you linked to me.
This reminded me of when I first got to Oregon and got a job at Detroit Lake Station. I drove through one or two camp grounds.
I am not a camp ground snob, no matter how I may or may not sound like one, but with the option of wilderness camping so close by, I could never bring myself to use one of these camp sites. There was one, just north of Lincoln on the coast that I went to with the church scout troop.

I completely get it - I like very private secluded remote wilderness backcountry campsites that have something special about them, like a reason to specifically be there, like right on a river or lake shoreline or perched in the mountains. I personally don't do a lot of developed campgrounds unless there's a Site that's very high quality. There are a few here and there at Developed Campgrounds that I would do but they are the exception not the norm. Candidly, there weren't any at Southshore at Detroit Lake that met my criteria, so I wouldn't camp there.....
I haven't really scoped out the best Oregon Coast wilderness/backcountry Campsites, I added that one you referenced to my master list for future exploration.

@@TrailPerspectiv I need to get in to my old camping gear, but I had a notebook with a list of "High Mountain Lakes" that I like to go to, of course most were on Jefferson (Jeff), but those were more for convenience.
I found some, that were not far from trail heads that I would not stop at because they were just blown out, and ravaged because of their accessibility and lack of supervision. I want to say one was south edge of Hunts Lake? Yea, that name could be completely wrong, but with out referencing my old trail head map and note pad, it's all from old memories.

I am exactly the same way, a master list of all the best spots! I have heard there is pretty epic backcountry camping around Hunts Lake. Hopefully conditions in that area will improve to make it more hikable!

@@TrailPerspectiv Hunts Lake was never one of the better maintained trails when I was there. I want to say there is a section of the PCT north of it, but I could be oh so wrong, lol.
