- When This Oregon Lake Dried Up In 2015, The Relics Of An Eerie Ghost Town Emerged
When droughts caused the water in Detroit Lake to drop to almost unprecedented levels, something incredible was revealed lurking beneath. It’s 2015, and America’s western coast is in the grip of a severe drought. Over in Marion County, Oregon, Detroit Lake is the lowest that it’s ever been. But as the reservoir slowly dries up,…

I always say, if they dried up all the lakes we would find everything. Included our missing socks and Tupperware lids.
👏👍😁
Lol nice.
Socks r still in the bottom of your dryer.
Tupperware lids r in your kids rooms. At least that’s where ours always are. 😂

I lived at a cabin with my little family, at Detroit lake, in the willamette national forest for 7 years. Until September 2020, when the historic wildfires, destroyed the city of detroit and scorched the surrounding mountains. I captured years of video of the entire area, including the fires we escaped from. One fun fact, I knew an old timer from Old Detroit, Native Salmon and steelhead used to run the river year round, after the dam was put in the river would never be the same. And I was told the residents were not fans of the dam, but it went in anyway and they moved the town above the water line, which in 2020 was mostly burned to the ground. The native American history goes back 10s of thousands of years, the area is extremely rich in history. Which we reached out and touched during the time we lived in the area. Since then We moved to the mountains in Southern Oregon and built an off grid cabin and are pursuing a sustainable lifestyle
Go to the 5 minute mark and see the wagon and leave....Save 7.5 minutes of you life.... You're welcome
THANKS!
Thanks, this guy never gets to the point.
I was only into 2 mins and thinking "ok where is it ?" Then decided to scroll down to see if anyone was thinking the same thing I was. Thank u......
If I didn't read your comments, I would have lost 5min of my life couldn't get back!
I should have read this first. What incredible padding for a photograph.
I was born in 1950 in Bend, Or. My parents lived at Detroit where my father owned the "Canyon Club" tavern. We actually lived in a log cabin at the original Detroit town site. It was so bad 😂
It is torture listening to this narrator. Absolute torture.
I couldn’t agree more. Whenever I click on a video and hear this voice I immediately close it. A shame too, some of the topics I am very interested in.
It seems like many of these UA-cam narrators are intentionally making up their own accent.
His voice has a tone that bothers me. Tbh, his voice reminds me of Alton Brown from the food network channel.
Oh my God! The longest 8 minutes in recent memory. And all to tell a 3min story and show a handful of pictures. Please, just get to the story. Way too fluffy and too many words.

I wonder if anyone found the automobile that the drunks drove off into the lake one night back in the 1950's? The place that they drove off the cliff may have been close enough to the dam that it wasn't uncovered by the low water. They brought in a hardhat diver because the water was to deep for scuba divers at that time and tried to recover the vehicle and bodies once, but the diver attached the cable to the bumper which broke when they tried to pull it up. To my knowledge, they never made another attempt to recover the vehicle and bodies. So, I presume that the vehicle and bodies are still there. Perhaps, the water is still low enough that someone with the proper scuba gear could still find it? It's located at a point that you can see the dam from where the road curves/turns left going East from the dam...they went straight ahead instead of turning left. A guard rail was installed a short time later.
I can't stand this guy's voice and milking his stories

Same thing happens in Pennsylvania at Youghiogheny River Lake. With a significant enough drought, an intact, multi-arch, stone bridge that was built in 1818, emerges from the depths, along with sidewalks and building foundations, with stairs leading to them.
Not all trivia need 7 minutes of fluff and filler. Just get on with it.

As an Oregonian I've been there many times but never saw it that low in my 50+ years. I am always surprised at all the tree stumps.
Was in High School when they cut the trees and built the dam. The old road is way up on the slope and was treacherous but fun to ride upon.
caught alot of fish there
It's just like my mates jokes, they go on too long!
I went down there during the drought. It was weird. I have lived in oregon my entire life driving past this lake a lot. I never saw it that low. Very pretty place.
Do u have any idea what octagon shaped pit was for in old days Detroit, OR?
@@cindyhatch5062 according to old records it was a fish pond.
Reminds me of a 5 stamp gold mill that has been left in its original location for people to see, if they happen to wonder out in the middle of nowhere to see it. In less than 10 years it will be a pile of rubble for no one to be able to see it together. This 5hit needs to be put in local museums!
vidzilla1 what is the name of the mill and where is it?
They are a dime a dozen, not worth the effort and money. Oregon museums are full of them.

I have learned not to waste my time watching 'Let Me Know' .
That wagon was down there just about as long as it took to finish this video
American history at it's FINEST.
Watching this in 2022, we're having record rain fall for June so far. Last year we had record temps 116f. But since we've had a wet spring and very wet june Detroit Lake is currently at capacity and the spill ways are flowing.
And Willamette is pronounced WILL-AM-IT
How can the lake be at "lowest levels ever" yet there's a town at the bottom of it?
hahahahaha! Good point!!
...cuz before that it was a river
they had a solid 5 min explaining it
Because as stated the town was their before the dam was built
Why didn't some historical group try to recover the wagon and preserve it?
I was thinking the same thing. It is a relic of our past. It should be rescued and displayed so all can enjoy...
Because someone is just plain dumb?
Simply said, that wagon, as special and unique as it is, was not worth the time or effort to dig it out and attempt to restore it. One could buy a restored wagon for less money then it would take to attempt to get that one out of the lake bed.
You see this same dilemma with old cars sometimes, where there is just too much rust and too much work required to restore it. In the end, it would be cheaper to buy an already restored version.
Cannot believe it would cost an extravagant amount of money to remove the wagon from that mud flat, transport it to a local museum, and have it placed in climate-controlled storage until it can be put on display. It is a piece of local history that is irreplaceable. They said it was about 140 years old, after all. I guess some people do not appreciate the true value of historical artefacts.
@@Patrick_Cooper You pay to have it done, Oregonians will all laugh at you for wasting your money.
Being from Salem, i can tell you, Detroit is a crispy relic since the entire area burned down.

Thank you for sharing! As a born & raised Oregonian & lover of history, I found those quite interesting. I've taken this drive around Detroit lake often & it is lovely, especially in the Fall. Would have loved to have got a look at some of these treasures- to bad Detroit couldnt set up a small museum & preserve & display some of them.
The octogonal thing - was is used for the railroad? Cant think of the exact name but they used them to turn the engines around then rehook train to them so they can now go the opposite direction.
it was octagonal fish pond.
@@TheDaveyDonut they had a fish hatchery right there in old town? I can't remember exactly what I saw...as you can see it's been a while since I saw this video. Guess I need to go back & rewatch!😅
Its about 6-8 ft across. A small fish pond instead of a hatchery type.
That old town shows up pretty often that lake was created for irrigation and power generation . It's recreational use is not it's priority to stay filled
I grew up camping at Detroit lake every summer goi my boating, fishing and hiking! I loved Detroit lake.
I live 45 minutes west of Detroit ....they drain the lake every October . The wagon is just south west of the hey 22 bridge
The wagon makes an appearance every now and again, it looks the same as it did when I was a kid 50 years ago
Mans trying to meet the word requirement on his school project
There is a lost mine called the Lost Pit Mine up near pitt lake and it too is a giant pit made by glaciers that melt and at certain times of the year it’s a lake that drains with exposed bedrock and gold in its bare bedrock on floor of this pit. This happens in nature and can form the perfect gold sluice naturally. At other times of the year it is a lake or quarry. Either empty as a pit or it’s a lake made by rain and snow melting
The water in the lake just can't be as low as it ever has been. After all, there was a complete town under water?
Thank you for you're research and hard work. I am a history junkie. God Bless you.
Is there a world record for speaking for a long time and not saying anything. This speaker would hold it!
gregl
Nice outfit you are wearing
LMAO!!!! I thought torture was against the law.
There is so much wrong here finding a starting place would be difficult. Anyone else notice how he went on about the draught being the worst in history only to name three other occasions when the lake also dried up? Then we get told it is a man made lake to begin with? Which means that under normal natural circumstances it wouldn't be there at all. Then they start the guilt trip about removing relics from public land only to allow the relic to end up at the bottom of the lake again? Anyone catch the part about low oxygen count in the lake? That means no fish no plants. It is a dead lake, but we are worried about it.
Damn -- that wagon (and any other bits & pieces that emerged) should have been pulled up, cleaned, and put into a town museum.
I get that people wanna see the relics but I enjoy learning about how this stuff all began so chill the fuck out and enjoy the video!
I really hate to say this but... your videos are full of fluffy stuff thats not all that relevent. I wish it were more concise. I would actually watch them and subscribe. Great topic
Severe drought yet we built a whole town there 100 years ago
They ought to restore it and put it in a museum..
I woke up in time to see the wagon wheel ,very nice pic of it.
Detroit lake serves over 150,000 people. Here they are in alphabetic order. Aida Abusis, Bob Abusis, Carl Abusis, Adam Adams, Susan Adams.....
So cool!!!
Yes you found a old wagon on its side and it takes 7 minutes to say you found a wagon nice work , maybe you could have told us why the trees were harvested before the flood , or maybe what happened to the rail line thanks for wasting my time.

State should have saved it and put it in a museum.
Great video! I loved the added history, too.
Thank you.
Wow that's very idiotic that archeologist will leave those wagons they could literally put them in a museum for all to see.
They should have dug it out, restored it and put it in a museum.
This narrator is a rich guy. His voiceover is everywhere
The town was only abandoned because it was going to be turned into a lake!!! The government wouldn't even donate a tract of land to rebuild the city. Imminent Domain. As soon as I heard the narrator, I knew he didn't do his research and talks waaaay to much. So I looked it up. Way more information. I try to avoid his channels. Wastes my time.
The octagon is the center of a mill where the centers hooked to oxen and they walk in circles around it pulling a grinding stone that would fit in there.
There was no "drought", detroit lake is the name of the town. The water level is controlled by a dam.
Had the octagonal depression at 5:53 been a foundation for a structure like a gazebo there would have been no need to leave the center hollow it would be flush with the ground. The octagonal shaped depression looks like a water fountain either for decoration or for watering horses.
correct. it was a fish pond.
The Smithsonian has no problem taking objects so we never see them again
You finally get to see what he’s talking about at 5:05
I fish that lake all the time. It doesn't dry up, they drain it to damn near empty every year.
Should have stabilized the wood of the wagon and placed it in a museum were more people could enjoy its beauty.
A metal detector paradise
Very Interesting Story !!!.Great Video and Super History 😎😎😎
I thought there would be more to see than just the wagon. This took too long.
I'll save you all the time if you read this first.....One old wagon half buried in the mud and one brick lined watering hole sort of thing. That's it, that all that's everything.
I remember this. The water drying up at Detroit Lake in 2015. Weird year.
Detroit Lake isn't drying up, they drain the lakes every year til they're almost dry on purpose to prevent flooding and bad algae problems.
Correct....out with the old and in with the new snowmelt.
Well, Dam! (See what I did there?)

Awesome video. I camp down around Detroit Lake almost every year, including 2015 when the water was really low. That was weird to see!
As an ole Odell,Or. resident I am surprised they did't declare it off limits and stole all the land owners property near it.
Wow cool
If you'll edit this from 5:00 to 5:15 you can make this a 15 second video and be spot on with your title. The first sound of every sentence you make sounds like someone hit you in the throat with an axe. I was hoping that would be what happened in the closing...oh well!!
That old wagon probably goes back to the 1800s buckboard wagon.
Get a point quicker. Way to drawn out.
I live 20 minutes from here and they empty the lake every year and the Eagan shows every year

In the winter you can walk on the old streets....even the lines are still there.
I think there is a unique tale here. Thank you. We just don't recognize the art of story telling anymore. In our hyper speed world of sound bites and flashing visuals we are all to anxious to be stimulated and titulated. There was a time when people appreciated a good yarn, as in the days of this antique wagon perhaps. He or she who could tell a good story was looked up to in a community, they brought people together and stirred the imagination. We've lost something, wouldn't you say? With all these fandagled electronic contraptions we've become addicted to. I believe we should all take some time to learn to converse again. To share and learn from one another. Blessings
Yes.
Yes, and the bore who made this video can be first in line to learn how to converse and tell stories. Presently he is a national liability who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a microphone.
Imagine what we would find if our OCEANS dried up
If the lake is at it's lowest LEVEL EVER

They flooded it on the town what’s not to get
@@supermoon1430, don't you get that the water level was lower before it was flooded than it was after it was flooded? What did you think "flood" meant?
The octagonal structure is not made of cement. It is concrete. Get your facts straight. Cement is just one of several ingredients in concrete.
The octagonal pit may have been the foundation of a steam locomotive water tower, but I don’t know where it sits relative to the one-time railroad track.
freaking wow
