  • In this video we're testing four major cinema camera sensors against each other to see how they perform as we raise the ISO. We also test the enhanced sensitivity mode of the Alexa 35.
Thank you AbelCine New York for the support!

This confirms to me that the varicam is kind of underrated

This a tiny tip from someone dealing with the same kind of content: UA-cam is notorious for compressing grain structure and noise into oblivion - this is beneficial for the vast majority of videos. If you make a video where you want to show grain, you have to (at least) upload in 4K... 1080p is worthless in this context, as you simply can't see any grain. We even upload 8K, as the higher resolution at 420 sampling will provide the best possible master for the 4K and HD compression, without uploading ProRes 444 (which obviously takes to long). Good luck on your journey.

Did you guys do lower light test, outside? And you mean Noise, and not Grain, right?

Thanks for testing the Varicam. I just bought one for the texture in the sensor alone.

Of course! This was my first time really hands on with it and I was so impressed. The skin tones are amazing

Curious if the Varicam is doing more processing as I know the RAW from that camera is known to be noisier where as ARRI Prores doesn't really have any processing (noise reduction) and looks pretty identical to the RAW output. Of course the ARRI 35 is different in terms of options for noise reduction at high ISO.
Varicam definitely seems like a solid choice, too bad they really fell off in terms of market demand. Looks to perform much better than any red Camera besides the Monstro or Raptor.

Great thought....I would tend to think you're probably right because the Varicam is so shockingly clean. I would consider shooting with Varicam after this.....or at least not be upset if I HAD to

What olpf did you use on the dragon? Also what debayer did you use? Please switch to ipp2 and don't use any denoising

Nice test. The ALEV 3 sensor still looks the best IMO. Any reason you chose the Varicam over the Venice? Same goes for the Dragon; why not use a Gemini with it's dual ISO?

Great question, I was waiting for this one. Sony would have been the better option since it’s more popular and like you said, also has the dual ISO. Just so happened my friend had the Varicam. I also just so happen to own the Dragon and I think it does a good job of demonstrating how far the technology has come. It’s sort of the test dummy whose purpose is to let the other cameras shine.
