  • At last, we launch all the sails as we set off on another downwind open water crossing in the South Pacific ocean under our big guns, the spinnaker and staysail. If you like watching sailing channels with real sailing, you've come to the right place! We've got this episode jam-packed full of real sailing.
    Learn how and why we use our spinnaker aboard our performance cruising sailboat. Learn why we choose the routes we do. Watch as we adjust our autopilot settings for better downwind sailing performance. See how we fly 2 headsails at once and discuss managing mainsail trim to open the slot for better airflow over our sails.

    About Us:
    We are two young racing sailors who decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands.
    From there, we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. 6 we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay.
    Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is what we are doing. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile and onward across the Pacific and Indian oceans before we complete our circumnavigation by crossing the equator again in the Atlantic Ocean and landing in the Caribbean.
    Oh yea, and don't forget to keep an eye out for our amazing four-legged friend, Roxy, the sailing dog. Not only is our spinnaker a downwind weapon on board our ship, but Roxy the Dog is the ultimate defender as she protects our boat from aerial bird attacks (you know, bird poop!).

    Curtis' face just after they hoisted the spinnaker says all :) great sailing . I have noticed you passing the staysail's sheet through a snatchblock but I wonder if you also use a snatchblock for the spinnaker sock's control lines (for lifting the sock). or are they free? when I hoist my gennaker I wish I could pass them thru a snatchblock. If for whatever reasons I lost the lines from my hands, they would not fly loose ... Thanks for the great content !

    *Curtis & Kate,* I would have thought that it would be better if the spinnaker was on the opposite side compared to the main. That way it would catch more wind, and balance-out the the leaning forces on the boat. But, since it wasn't that way, I guess I was wrong. Could you explain why it is better to have both sails on the same side? Another wonderful video. It feels like it is getting a bit warmer for you. ... Thank you!

      Hi! You aren’t wrong and it is a good thought at first glance, some boats are designed to sail that way. It mostly depends on the wind speed, angle of the boat to the wind, and the design of the boat and sails. We are sailing our boat at its optimal angle to the wind for the best VMG (velocity made good). All of this starts to get tricky and there is a lot of math involved. Basically the faster a boat is, the more the wind effecting the sails moves forward, needing all the sails on the same side. An extreme example would be the foiling boats like the current gen Americas Cup who almost always have their sails trimmed in tightly, even downwind.

    Hi
    Just wondered what was the name/artist singing on this video….first song I think…..blue sky come, promise not to leave……a song I definitely want to learn to play at gigs in Ireland! Love the sailing on your channel……and the fact you’re going the hard way around…..no Panama Canal for you guys!! Respect

    As usual a wonderful video from my 2 favorite sailors. Went back and watched your 1st videos ( back when u were young kids) doing your refit trying to find info about your boat. Unsuccessful and i notice most youtube sailors rarely mention the length and model of their boats. Guess i'm a nerd and always interested in bluewater vs crusing preformance .

    The specs I see on a J46 indicate a hull speed of 8.53. Kate indicated hoping to hit 15. Were you expecting to be going with a current of over 6 kt? If not, what gave the hope of hitting 15?

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  6 місяців тому +1

      Not sure where she said that? Our polars max out at around 13. We have had the Sweet Ruca to 15 in flat-ish water with the blue kite (r2) in 25 knots of wind, which in is the range of mistakes costing big money with a blown kite. Our top speeds of 16+ have all been under jib and main, surfing in breeze >35 knots. Normally we actually sail pretty conservatively.
