Some of these NIL deals are like the sports version of 360 deals given to music artists.
The kid from UFlorida, Gervon Dexter, DL Bears, is getting his deal with the predatory agent, thrown out in a court of law. I coached this kid in HS. Great Dude. He signed that deal before the 2023 Draft, and I told him a few months ago, I wish he would have ran the idea by me or another of his mentors before he signed it. But like me as a public school teacher/coach, he grew up poor. $200K signing bonus was hard to turn down. Fortunately its being litigated as we speak in Florida. I might actually have to testify. Good for you Harrison Jr. He learned from shady deals like Gervons
I read about that situation. They basically gave him a payday loan. Thats the thing with NIL. Nobody is paying a penny for the “name, image, or likeness” for 99% of lineman. So there has to be a catch. This whole situation is going to turn out worse than the old system.
Oops forgot to mentor him on life skills only football

I became smarter just by watching this video. I gained a good understanding of why MHJ did what he did.
This is how monopolies operate, folks!! Good on MHJ, go get yours!!
Thank you PatMcaffey show for your reasonable, empathetic, and understanding response to this issue. I think educating the students to what they need to look out for in a contract is a huge service and something the NCAA needs to do better at, but also will come off as the NCAA acting like what a players union should be while also trying to make money off of these kids.
The tough part of the situation is managing how do we allow kids to take deals that are front loaded with a high back end cost if they want without it also letting them be trapped into preditory long term deals. The NFL manages this by having non guaranteed contracts, but in other sports players even a good as Steff Curry and Scottie Pippen have had deals that overvalued them early but left them further down the payscale than they should have been (remember part of how the warriors got good was that MVP steff was i think only the 4th highest salary on the team) and teams/organizations should be allowed to bet on players, players also should be able to bet against themselves for immediate security but likely need to be protected by someone from making bad deals. (I wonder what the number would need to if there was a contact void once a company made some multiplyer of profit/revenue off an individual; the kid with the $400K lifetime deal, should it be voided once he has earned them back 4million, what about 40million, it certainly would need to be more than 400K otherwise no one would bet on mid-potential players).
I'm proud of these young players who are business savvy.

Sounds like typical deal making to me. In any other deal or contract negotiation, it’s on both parties to do proper research and projections to come to an advantageous and ethical agreement for both parties. If one party decides to be unethical or structures the agreement to where they are the only true beneficiaries, then it’s on the other party to NOT AGREE. Good job Marvin 👍🏽
Yes but this is new to the kids and their parents and not new to the people offering. So one side is very knowledgeable and the other side is not. So I agree these kids and their parents need to get up to speed quickly, but the advantage is on whoever is offering these deals because this isn’t new to them.
This was a phenomenal segment
Madden is not a good game..They just have an exclusive deal to hold the rights...
Like the NFL
Even if it wasnt exclusive, no one is gonna make an NFL game anyway. They would have to develop it from scratch which would be HUGELY expensive with no gaurentee it would sell enough to be profitable.
The 2k games were awesome but they never ever made money because they had to sell them at a loss just to compete with madden which is a household name.
The NFL is who decided to have developers bid for the exclusive rights in the first place.
It’s a good game to me. I have a ball playing madden.

25% of ur future earrings forever is still crazy
Who’s the kid that did that???
@@billtodd8736 Javon Dexter the bears 2nd pick last year gave up 25% of his future earring forever to sign a NIL deal
@pesopeso1668 I thought it was 15 percent, which is still rediculos. He got 400k and will have to pay over 1 mil of his first contract. Now I think Florida will nullify this contract, still under litigation, but it's clearly predatory.
This actually sounds like healthy commerce. He doesn’t have to sign anything he doesn’t want to. He’s got some leverage, let him use it for his benefit and the benefit of players who follow him.
Also there is such a thing as an illegal contract. If you sign a really bad deal, you can take it to court and eventually get it nullified for a price, usually. But this is business and every business is going to try to get the best deal possible, and there’s nothing really wrong with that.

When in football do you ever get in a track stance and run 40 yards? A good amount of your 40 time depends on your burst coming out of that track stance which pretty much has ZERO correlation to what you'll be doing on a football field! Why not at least have players start out in a football stance so you get more realistic results?
You’re right, a sprinters stance is different from a standard football player stance.
But some players use a more sprint style start on special teams during kickoffs, don’t they?
I’m not sure how this will be affected by the new kick off rules though …
Many fans confuse what professional sports actually is, it’s not really about sports but making money from sports. Owners, players, coaches, agents etc really only care about making money. This is all fine, sadly it’s now in the college game. You have to watch kid sports to actually see players who are playing for the love of the game. I have no hate on people making money but please understand it’s really no longer about the game or team, it’s all about money.
His dad was very successful so if his dad says to do something he should listen to
This is the bargaining that is a good business move. And it works all the way down to your local warehouse that bargains for a better deal even if it means going with a union.
The Gervon Dexter NIL deal (former FL to CHI Bears) was already illegal under FL state law, but because it wasn't reported correctly to UF's administration, no one caught it prior to his lawsuit. There are some protections in place for NIL but it does depend on the state - which then leads us to the NCAA deferring to states to write their own NIL laws, thus creating more of a mess in collegiate athletics. NCAA (surprise) screwed up majorly in 2021 with both NIL and transfer exception.
“Maybe this isn’t a guy that you want in your building”. As if anyone after pick 4 had a chance at him
Hopefully a lot of players start doing this. Make your own brand.
Its a bad deal and anybody who does business with those people see the downside before the benefits.
Wow that is a very very very smart move by Jr. He is definitely changing the game for the better before he wven takes the field.
Report on, WHO is the owner or group that is BEHIND Fanatics.
9:40 - that’s just a high interest loan (assuming he makes the NFL)
...That's not the way loans typically work. No matter how much he makes, or how much he pays, he can't pay it off prior to its expiration date.
He has the right to do what he wants. If it were me I’d produce first in the NFL though.
I have no problem and think it’s great for MHJ, and he should do these types of things if it is better for him. But I will say, if Caleb Williams did this, the public would not be as positive about it🤷♂️

Easier for MHJ to not sign a deal as a sophomore, he's never known what being broke is, he came from money. Also had his dad who is financially sound to guide him. Many of these other kids don't come from a background like that.
Or maybe it’s not about the money but more about learning the business side from his Hall of Fane father ?? He just happens to be in a great situation to learn about how to read deals

Wow! Great insight with the financial breakdown. This SAD, yeah these businesses are preying on athletes lack of education and economic status
If the NCAA wants "guard rails" they could simply allow every school to offer access to free legal consultation as part of the recruiting package and for current student athletes to ensure all the deals are good ones.
The better NIL collectives are already doing this.
To think these companies aren't preying on these kids is foolish. That's exactly what they are doing. Flash a 19-20 year 400k-500k and they'll sign anything away for the short term cash flow. Prime example they mentioned 15% of your pre-tax earnings for 25 years for $400k...what a joke. They knew that even if he didn't pan out they would be able recoup the $400K at minimum.

Interesting how the dynamics change when a father who, actually involved & cares about their kids can change the financial Bull💩.
I think if you hold out you should be immediately be cut from the league, barred for a year and forced to sign a rookie minimum deal with no bonuses. Its time to stop letting the players have total control of the league.
