The serve is the only shot that is theoretically all in your control. But for most of us, it’s also the most difficult one to tame. It’s either inconsistent.. or you’re dinking the ball over too softly and your opponents start attacking your serves. So, why is developing the serve so hard?

The big realisation I had when finally learning to serve "properly", was that the feeling you have of your serving arm passing over you to hit the ball is not one where you feel in control over your arm. It's more like you are using your whole body to launch your arm towards the ball like a missile. Your arm is in motion, but you do not have that feeling of being in control of it with your arm muscles. The control in the serve comes from the fundamentals and muscle memory. But it's a big mental hurdle to overcome, because it's sort of an uncomfortable feeling when you first encounter it.

This is a really good explanation and one feeling i still struggle to overcome

not really. you have control just before and after contact. the "throw" or "snap" or "long axis rotation" + the follow through is all you need to control. I agree that the lead up to contact is a kind of free fall of the arm; but just after feeling the "zero gravity" motion of the raquet falliing behind you as you rotate the trunk, comes your very controlled and conscious snap/throw/IISR

@@at1838The more often you get it right the more familiar and controllable it becomes.

As always...excellent video and simplifying the biomechanics and breaking down each element, rather than a do this or do that and keep repeating. Top quality video instruction...

This channel is so good. An interesting comparison to general and bad advice is golf. Only a few years ago everyone tried to push all players into the same positions regardless of body composition etc, this ruined a lot of good players and led to injuries as well. I’ve learned to never trust any one teacher and always trust what feels comfortable for my body.

Just in time Dayday! The shoulder instruction is very helpful. I have made a lot of progress but needed a little encouragement. Thank you very
    much. 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏

Great video as usual! My main issue is that I can blast >100mph first serves reliably in practice, and almost never double fault with decent sliced second serves, but that falls apart in tournament matches, when I do 1-3 double faults per serve game due to stress.

it's just a game, relax. your life won't change if you win or lose a tennis match unless is a Wimbledon final. Just spare a thought for a starving child before the second serve and you'll be fine.

I found that driving the pronation with my wrist gave me the racket speed I needed. So now this is really like throwing a ball. Still shoulder rotation but the speed comes from the wrist

      dunno.
when i try to actually provide the wrist snap, the timing goes to hell, not just on the serve, but forehand as well.
no, i do better when i concentrate on fullest extention and allow the pronation to occure on its own from the arm simply doing it.
simply throw as high and far away as possible and the pronation happens without my snapping and causing timing errors.

Great video. I had been playing for just two yrs. I learned to love the game and at the same time I learned tennis isn't that "easy" as some people makes it looks. Haha.
Question, any chances on you visiting Arizona and put some clinics together? We aren't too far from Cali 😉😉

Nice video! I have a question to ask about the one handed backhand grip. I watched your video about it, and am wondering whether to use the modified eastern, or a strong eastern. Which one would you recommend? Thank you.

whenever i lose control of my serve, enter the whelm of confusion, i become simple....i go back to my baseball throw to the outfield.
only making it a pitch instead. but the outfeild thought allows me to go looser and higher.

Right. Makes me wish I had learned a good baseball throw when young. It might make this "improving my tennis serve" thing easier!

Really hate that if you sign up for a course you get the worst type of sales pitch email marketing scam type stuff back. Tennis players I hope are on average not that stupid, and on principle will never sign up
