  • The first episode of Sourdough Simpleton introduces the essential item that you need to make sourdough - the starter. Here is a simple scheme to make your starter from scratch, so that you can begin making your own delicious sourdough breads.
See all of the videos, as well as tools and supplies you may need, on the website, www.SourdoughSimpleton.com.
The Sourdough Simpleton is designed for the newcomer to the world of Sourdough baking. I am a novice, myself, and am writing this from a perspective that I found hard to find as I navigated the straits of sourdough, encountering terms and techniques along the way that defied a simple explanation. The videos on UA-cam are supported by a website, www.sourdoughsimpleton.com, and by a Facebook Group, bit.ly/FBSourdough.

Using chop sticks to mix the flour and water works GREAT.

I agree, and many use them. I just don't have them in the house, so a table knife was up to the task as well. I now have a long straight spatula that does a fantastic job!

    Hi Marc,
I am gluten intolerant, do you think using brown rice flour first instead of the full wheat flour would work still? Or might I need to add some yeast in with the brown rice flour to help kickstart it off?
I have been wanting to do sourdough for years!

It is possible to make a starter without wheat flour. You might want to try using a little bit of yeast to jump start the process. Of course you'll want to bake your bread with gluten-free flour as well. I will be interested to hear your progress. Please do post it to the Facebook page.

Thanks for the question. This was the first video that I did in the series, and I clearly could have done a better job explaining! You need to go through the discard / feed cycle several times, until your starter is active with a surface covered with bubbles, and that it doubles in size over several hours - from the gas bubbles trapped in the starter. While that may take only three or four days, as shown in this video, some people may need to continue the process for longer, depending on local conditions. Check the other starter related videos later in this series for more details. It's really not difficult, but you often may feel that it is not progressing quickly enough. Patience is a virtue with sourdough baking. Many recipes and processes involve a little bit of activity and a lot of waiting!
