  • I've done quite a few of these conversions, mostly on the front wheels when installing disk brake upgrades to go with big engines. It seems like most of the tapered roller bearing kits go together a little too tight, even when ALL the parts are new.
I want to mention the shims I used in this video are the crankshaft timing gear shims for the A-series engines, part number 6K628 (.003" I believe). But you can just order shims by dimension from various industrial suppliers. Ideal would be several in each size - .002", .003", and .005" to cover just about any situation.
This method works on any wheel bearing style that uses torque through the inner bearing races to retain the hub to the spindle. Just order shims appropriate to fit the ID and OD of your bearing race and spindle. In some applications (such as differential pinion gears), I have shimmed the OUTER bearing races prior to pressing them in, but that takes much more work (and risk of parts destruction!) if much trial and error fitting is required.

Jemal describes the difficulty of long term manufacturing holding repetition tolerance, then describes the engineering target of design and a solution to make the reality of manufacturing meet the design requirement. While I have a mini, I also have every other mechanical contrivance and they all need this approach. I'd be horrified to think of my local garage doing this conversion especially as no shim pack is supplied with the brg kit.
