I always loved the airships that had rooms and areas you could explore. The Blackjack being probably the best with the casino setting and party members hanging out.
The Manacutter was one of FFXIVs first few flying mounts (the Black Chocobo was the first with the other Chocobos getting flight after completing a quest) before everything was made to fly. There are also several other mounts based on Airships: the Falcon (named after the airships in FF4/FF6 and loosely based on the later), Lunar Whale (based on the FF4 airship artwork of the same name), Cruise Chaser (based on the spaceship/robot Cruise Chaser Blasty and FF9's Ark based on the former) and Gloria-class Airship (based on the FF11 airships) and the Regalia Type-G (from FF15).
You didn't forget about the M.S. Prima Vista that belonged to Baku and the Tantalus players at the beginning of Final Fantasy 9, did you?! That's the one that Zidane starts in!! Sure, it didn't take the party anywhere except to Alexandria and the forest that would later be petrified... but it was Zidane's home, and it featured a stage for Zidane and friends to perform on!
They said in the video that the party used numerous airships throughout the story, but the two they discussed were the only ones that were player-controlled. So, they didn't forget the Prima Vista, it was just outside the parameters of what they were talking about.
Airships, just like so many other sci-fi elements of the original FF, were clearly inspired by the film "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" by Studio Ghibli. I've rewatched the original version with English subtitles quite recently, and I can confirm that even the same name, "hikoutei" (flying boat), is used when the characters refer to the movie's airship Goliath.
yes indeed. Airships and Chocobos are both in the Nausicaa Valley of the Wind movie from 1984. the movie was so successful they went on to form Studio Ghibli. their first movie as Studio Ghibli proper was Castle in the Sky in 1986.
Had to look up what an actual real life Ariship (Zeppelin) is called in Japan, Hikosen 飛行船 (flying ship). Wouldn't it be more acurate? As those look more like Ships and not Boats :D
One of the things I miss most about classic FF is getting an airship and flying around the overworld. I like modern FF but just having a location select screen (10, 12) or not having access to an airship at all (13) has been a real downer. 15 was a step in the right direction I guess, but oh lord was that thing hard to control (and you didn't get it until post-game). One of my wishes for 16 was that we'd get to fly an airship but seeing how the world is gonna be like 12 I won't be getting my hopes up (oh well, I love 12 so I'm not that upset).
Happy to see Final Fantasy hasn't abandoned airships after all this time, and I respect FFXV for making the Regalia with manual controls instead of just a cutscene like the previous games were doing
Glad to see Type O mentioned! It had an interesting use of airships, with a mix of both ferry and player-controlled movement types, and the player airship was ancient technology like in Final Fantasy X.
Don't know about the original SNES version, but you could actually rest in the FF5 airship, just in a convoluted way. If you turned it into a submarine, then entered an underwater cave, you could move about inside which included a lower level for resting.
It's obvious that the Enterprise is named in honor of Star Trek. But I'm embarrassed that it took me something like 25 years to realize that the Falcon is named because of Star Wars' Millennium Falcon!! 😅
Airships are a huge aspect of the franchise I absolutely adore. One of the biggest highlights to any Final Fantasy game for me is when I first discover the games airships. I've LOVE to see a Final Fantasy with a similar premise to Skies of Arcadia, where airships are a major focus for both story and gameplay.
In Final Fantasy 5 when the airship was in submarine mode if you deported in an underwater cave you could technically take a nap. In Final Fantasy 6 one of Setzer's Slots results had an aerial bombardment from the airship. In Final Fantasy 14 at least one of your mounts is presented as a single occupant airship.
The fact you find the airship right at the beginning of 10 was such good foreshadowing, they tell you it's a airship but i forgot by the time I got to home
The Ragnarok will always be my favourite airship/spaceship because it would be classed as a grappler ship like the XGP from the Outlaw star anime, both of these spaceships are awesome.
Idk if it’s really worth mentioning, but for a time, the FC airships in FFXIV could also be used to transport players to the original version of Diadem, the area later being removed for a time, released later without said travel, then later revamped again as as place for gatherers to collect items needed for The Firmament.
The Prima Vista's escape from Alexandria and the arrival at Lindblum are two of the most iconic airship scenes in the FF series. Honestly, FFIX is full of stunning moments, including and especially moments involving airships.
FFIX also pays homage to the previous airships in Final Fantasy. At Olivert, you get to see 4 ships get mentioned 1: First Airship 2: Ship of War 3: Invincible Prototype, Prototype Failure 4: Warship Invincible:Currently in Use Pretty sure that the ships you see are the ones from earlier games. And since Olivert, and the Ipsens Castle are from Terra and the merger failed 5,000 years ago. That implies that the Invincible is 5,000 years old which points to Terran technology being much more advanced than Gaian technology
I like how every FF had Airships is some form, some being more techonoligal, other being more classic and then there is FF4. Lunar Whale: Space. Wanna go to Space? Spaaaaaceeee.
There are also a couple a pretty cool airship mounts in FFXIV as well. In game you can get a small personal airship built to transport one person, an even littler one that's build to be able to deploy wheels and roll cross the ground like a motorcycle, and, I think I've even seen a tiny airship being ridden like a hoverboard. The Lunar Whale is even in the cash shop
Just because some people weren't happy with the way airships were presented in newer final fantasies doesn't mean we need to diminish the role airships played in them completely. Only 30 seconds were spent covering their role in FFXIII. There couldn't be any mention the Palamecia? An entire chapter takes place on it. Or Sazh's actual profession as an airship pilot?
I loved gaining access to the airships, but I even more loved how “grounded” FFXI was. I lament Home Point Crystals being turned into teleport crystals, because the need to actually travel between locations represented much of the charm for that game, to me; relying on other players (via the 6 Teleport spells in white magic, and Warp 2 from black magic, or even Escape) to assist in travel. Indeed, traveling in groups with friends, or happenstance with strangers, in the airship or one of the many boats/ships, was also a lot of that charm. Now, it’s all but gone, with the teleport crystals.
“Let’s make sure history never forgets the name… _Enterprise.”_ And from there, like her Star Trek namesake, she would become a recurring presence via many incarnations in Final Fantasy, as would the _Falcon_ and the _Invincible._
I still don’t understand how they land in fields yet not in water. Forest and mountain terrain I understand, but it’s literally a flying boat. Great video as usual.
I just realized the Dragon Quest serie really goes out of its way not to give you proper Airship (the Airship equivalent generally being some kind of flying legendary being instead). It's so interesting how the same basic idea can be implemented on so many different ways
Ragnarok was the dopest airship, 8 not even being my favorite game (though it's up there). Such a bad ass looking craft. I used to prolong play just to fly around and fight things.
Was really hoping you'd at least mention the existance of the cut content in the first final fantasy game, wherein there WAS a Cid, and the airship was his. Due to limitations for space and time, instead you just got the floatstone and suddenly airship in the desert, instead of the planned giant robotic themed tower. Also of note the Warmech was originally guarding the airship, instead of an easter egg encounter.
May I suggest a complete evolution video please? I don't think we looked at the history of the Freelancer/Jobless yet have we? If not, this is my suggestion: The Complete Evolution of Freelancers (or the Freelancer).
Do you know what would be great? If Square Enix partnered with Siku to make miniature matchbox size figurines for all the FF airships and vehicles as a limited edition. I’d snap that stuff up so fast!
We haven't had a pilotable airship in the mainline series since IX. 😭And no, I don't consider that trash car transformation in XV as airship. I really hope XVI will have them but I doubt it. Funny how with all the advancements in technology we can't have pilotable airships, something that was common for the series in the 90s nor the world maps for that matter.
I’m scarred from XV’s regalia… I stopped even attempting to fly and especially land the damn thing. Pitioss landing strip was my final landing maneuver and while I was successful in my attempt, eventually, I never flew the damn thing again.
Nothing was as rad as acquiring the airship in FFI. I'll never forget it, and now it's such an awesome event in most FFs. FFXV airship was lame. More like airshit. Was too hard to land that bad boy. Any FF without an airship is an FF I'm not stoked on.
Ragnarok is still the coolest ship that turn into a gundam And 15 is the most unique airships limousine lol remind me of old mach 5 anime. The 3rd one prolly ff x just because it looks very high tech and used as boss battles. Which i have never seen in a while.
My favorite airship in the series outside of the Highwind has to be Fahrenheit from X. Shame that it got replaced by that ugly "chopper motorcycle" looking airship in X-2
The FFX airship is so much a disappointment for me, especially after playing the previous classics like FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX where the airship can travel almost every where. The ability to explore open world (and found secret locations) is really fun.

i miss classic airships. manual flight and exploration is so much fun

Though storing a chocobo in the highwind is pretty cool, and cute heh.
Grandship from Bravely Default ❤
FFVI The Falcon takes flight. Legendary scene.
Flying the Falcon while listening to Searching for Friends is chilling
XIV also has Manacutters: 1-person airships that the player earns as a mount during Heavensward.

I always felt like the FFX airship was like a full airship version of Balamb Garden. Love how distinct the design is. Great video.
One of the things I miss most about classic FF is getting an airship and flying around the overworld.

I like thinking of riding on planes as airships. I’ve got another reason to like the older FF’s as you get to drive the airships.
Happy to see Final Fantasy hasn't abandoned airships after all this time, and I respect FFXV for making the Regalia with manual controls instead of just a cutscene like the previous games were doing
I was to stupid for the controls and crashed it after I got it. Never used the flying feature again
To bad FFXV was a trash game lol

11:34 i think the black jack also had a role in battle, part of setzers slot

"The highwind is your final mode of transport in FF7."
Submarine: Am I a joke to you?
You submarine, yes you are.
I like how every FF had Airships is some form, some being more techonoligal, other being more classic and then there is FF4.
Lunar Whale: Space. Wanna go to Space? Spaaaaaceeee.

Didn’t the Blackjack in FF6 help out in battle with one of Setzer’s slots? Don’t think that was mentioned here.
There was even a point where they said that an airship hadn't been used in battle since FF4 so I don't think they found out about the slots.
You missed the few airships that serve as mounts in XIV.
The shera from dirge of cerberus would had been nice.

FF13: [shows airship]
Players: Omg! The staple of Final Fantasy games! Finally I can travel to wherever-
Barthandelus: No.
The ones from 9 😍 my god! Also that game for me is about as perfect as a game could be and I'll play it until I die.
I love riding airships I hope they come back in final fantasy XVI, also when is the origins of Locke Cole or celss chere gonna happen
I don’t consider Cid’s Airship as a named ship,
To me the Enterprise is the first named ship in the series.
“Let’s make sure history never forgets the name… _Enterprise.”_ And from there, like her Star Trek namesake, she would become a recurring presence via many incarnations in Final Fantasy, as would the _Falcon_ and the _Invincible._
Thank you for this video! Brilliant!
I think FFXI has the best airships. You can actually see the engine rooms and walk around on the decks to check out how they work exactly.
Stellar work as always team FFU
It should be noted that the Mario series was also inspired by Final Fantasy by including airships starting with Super Mario Bros. 3.
I still don’t understand how they land in fields yet not in water. Forest and mountain terrain I understand, but it’s literally a flying boat. Great video as usual.
0:57 "Our typical granular style" this style is why I absolutely dig your videos like this. Just happy our airships are finally getting recognition
.

It's so interesting how the same basic idea can be implemented on so many different ways
FFVI’s airships also have a battle role. Dive Bomb is one of the results of Setzer’s slot.
I think you should have also included airship type mounts in your section on Final Fantasy XIV, such as the Manacutter you get in the Heavensward MSQ.

THE Teeny Tiny Toy Boat
literally just finished watching the final stage of an air fleet from Sonic Heroes before beginning to watch this 😂😂 what are the odds lmaoo
Ragnarok was the dopest airship, 8 not even being my favorite game (though it's up there). Such a bad ass looking craft. I used to prolong play just to fly around and fight things.
great video! what a tree never would have thought about the evolution of airships
28 seconds. Damn I've never been this early since my own premature birth.
I love airships!
The obvious final fantasy video we’ve been missing
XIV gives you the Manacutter mount in HW (That introduced flying), I always saw that as basically being the game's main airship
FFXIV airships are so underwhelming compared to FFXI
Was really hoping you'd at least mention the existance of the cut content in the first final fantasy game, wherein there WAS a Cid, and the airship was his. Balam Garden is much more an "airship" than the Ragnarok. It actually looks like a ship.
May I suggest a complete evolution video please?
I don't think we looked at the history of the Freelancer/Jobless yet have we? If not, this is my suggestion: The Complete Evolution of Freelancers (or the Freelancer).
such a lovely video
You can still recover your HP and MP on the ship in Final Fantasy 5 but only at underwater docking areas
Honestly if you put 2 wheels either end of it the Ragnarok would be a bad ass motorcycle
Why is this not on your evolutions playlist yet
Heh...Sidney is the granddaughter of Cid.

Need to do an actual airship build.. I'd love to see the black jack or high-wind r.c. model
In final fantasy 6 setzer has a outcome that causes the blackjack/ falcon to do a bombing run on his slot
Can i get a song check from 1:00 onwards?
It’s a piano version of ‘melodies of life’ from FFIX

Something about the Fahrenheit waiting on you outside of Zanarkand ruins after you find out that everything was a lie….
I’m scarred from XV’s regalia… I stopped even attempting to fly and especially land the damn thing. Pitioss landing strip was my final landing maneuver and while I was successful in my attempt, eventually, I never flew the damn thing again.
man all those poor guys that finished pitioss and immediately crashed the regalia without saving...
What costume is Noctis wearing in your FFXV clip?
Bahamut and Spiderman
Airshipssssss❤
I love ff6, but my favorite airship is from ff8. I love spaceships and space in general.
If the Regalia type F counts so do the flying mounts in _XIV_
What was that about ? the wings on noctis's back?
You could heal the party in FF5, you have to turn it into submarine first
Ragnarok better be in this list
why wouldnt it be its literally a look at every airship across the series
