Back in the late 70’s I took guitar lessons with Pat at his home in NYC. He was incredible! His music knowledge was outstanding. A few times we had a drink together (he would always buy) Amazing, humble and a wonderful human being!!!
So sad to see this this morning. Been listening to him for many a decade. At one time was really into the Martino mode & really got into playing his style. The World is a lesser place without him in it.
I was there. it was the time when I had just started to like jazz music and learn jazz on bass. my friend said that I need to see this guy live on stage. I was BLOWN AWAY.
Wow!what a player. The "suspense"riff is something he likes and to be fair it often works! Beautiful melodic sense of phrasing.Check out this tune Pat with Joey De Francesco,it's a killer!!!
Hey all and fellow lovers of both Mr. Martino and Mr. Mason. Let me help you all with the truth of what was going on here. This concert was the last of a 10 day Japan/Indonesia tour with the three of us and we were hot and ready to record this show. The opening act before us went way over time and we were rushed through an incomplete line check due to the huge mobb waiting for our show and rushed to start. We could'nt hear ourselves & the bounce back was loader than us! This should be removed!
Get Martino’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms” under your fingers. There are only 2: the 3-note Augmented triad and the 4-note Dim7 chord. 1) Play 554 on GBE for C+. Move any note DOWN one fret, parent 3 different MAJOR triads; move any note UP instead and you’ll parent 3 different MINOR triads. - So 6 other chords parented by that one easy-to-grab Aug. triad. - Got it? 2) For the 2nd parental form, fret 4545 on the DGBE for a Dim7 chord (named for any note in the chord). Drop any note by one fret, parent 4 Dom7 chords; instead, raise any note and you’ll parent a Half-Dim7 chord (m7b5). - So 8 other 7th chords parented by that one Dim7 chord. - Fun, eh? Only Martino noticed this about how a guitar “works”. Rip Pat Martino.
pat martino & george benson----close the books on jazz guitar after those two!!!! both have 'time' so deep its like driving spikes into railroad ties!!!!
I like the version with DeFrancesco better. The truth of the matter is that every performance does not net you a grammy. And though this is not my favorite, it is still a solid performance, worth listening to!
@dtetreault You play ahead or behind at times for spice, the spice of life. That 3 note repeating phrase was as interesting as whole solos by some other cats. It's just what Pat does, it's his thing. You can as-well be pissed off at bird for doing some licks at times you din't want him to. It's improv man - life in the moment. Best, BP
I don't know, guys. I'm glad a bunch of you get something out of this, but this performance leaves me a bit cold. I know Pat mostly from his classic records from the late 60s and 70s, and this doesn't hold up to that standard for me. (I haven't thought his playing the same since he came back from his health problems, and I'm not an old head.) That said, I'm glad he's still out there tearing it up, and he's still better than 90% of what's out there.
He uses a Clarus amp head, which he carries with him, but his contract calls for a Mesa Boogie 4 x 12 cabinet to be supplied for his gigs, and if a Mesa is not available, he will use a Marshal or whatever is available.
Pfff, easy to critic but try making a living at what these guys do, maybe 1 in a million can make it if any, not to mention they do it on the road and made a great living at it... Pat Martino is well respected by all of his peers and hailed by the great George Benson...
Pat can blow. But doesn't it all get to sounding the same since 1930? It really does. I say that with all love. We have to find the next vision. The 2:29 - 3:29 thing demonstrates the whole vibe in a nutshell. It gets boring. We humans stop listening. We artists get trapped trying to execute Michael Jordan moves.
I'm always loved Martino's playing, but when you watch him it's a bit disconcerting because he's got a lot of wasted motion in his left hand. But it doesn't seem to affect his playing. Goes to shows there is never a "right" way to play anything. Whatever works best is what you should do.
Tony is my teacher. The typical jazz organ technique is left hand bass. When they show his left foot he diesnt move it too much. He’s tapping one note over and over. Not holding out the note long enough for a tone but for the attack to compliment the left hand bass. We all got this from Jimmy Smith. There are a few exceptions to this-barabara dennerlien, Rhoda Scott, Richard Groove Holmes and Red young. Sometimes traditional jazz organists will drop down to the pedals for a little bit. But not for long.
There is plenty of precedent for playing Sunny in this style. It is often used as a kind of showpiece for a player's harmonic thinking since the basic progression lends itself particularly well to chord substitutions. That said, this is not my favorite performance by any means.
Good guitar player. Good musician. Has overcome some incredible hardships, but does he deserve to be called on of the greats? In my humble opinion, not really.

U one lucky guy.
Wow - what an experience to have. But nothing compares to his recovery from brain surgery a decade or so later. THAT was astounding.
What are you doing now

Rest in Love. One of the greatest.
A jazz legend - Pat Martino. Continuing one of the best genres in music; from Charlie Christian, to Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell........
A little bit of jazz for those who love it, a little bit for those who live it,what about those who make a living of it.

Interesting because I was listening and thought, hmmmmmm, as a musician, I can tell when things are "off". Thanks for the note, Tony
i would like to play metal with that guitar!

Isaac Wilks even just a little?
The string is on gauge 16's..... It might just work

pat martino & george benson----close the books on jazz guitar after those two!!!! both have 'time' so deep its like driving spikes into railroad ties!!!!
+whitney woods Except that Pat's time here is terrible.
@@fretbuzz59 as much as respect his playing, I have to agree. Often very ahead of the beat here...
I like the version with DeFrancesco better. The truth of the matter is that every performance does not net you a grammy. And though this is not my favorite, it is still a solid performance, worth listening to!
Gibson Pat Martino
Is finding the chords for play this song that keep me alive.
jesus pat, let tony take a solo, damn
GET ON PAT'S LEAR JET RIDE FOLKS! lol
Monaco's catching flies.
@MikeHawkOwns I think diagreen asked for the chords that repsonde to the melody, and not the melody itself ,which is octaves.
@diagreen It is Am7 moving chromatichly to C7/9
he is the John Petrucci of Jazz
COOL THANX.are those 9 chords in the at the begining?please help.
pat martino MASTER AND LEGENTE TO JAZZZ

I like this guitar, anybody knows the model?
Pat is clearly looking at Harvey in the intro and beginning to pick up the tempo and he never does and Pat is trying to push it ahead.
java ? is this in indonesia?
Marshall cabs??!!?? Pat Martino, Marshall’s most unlikely endorser! Just goes to show. Haha. The amp is Acoustic Image. I think.
I don't know, guys. I'm glad a bunch of you get something out of this, but this performance leaves me a bit cold. Which model is that guitar??
SUKHOI..........................................РОССИЯ
what song is this?
@NitroAndDeathMetal Almost a full minute! lmao
Is Pat Martino playing a Marshall amp??
He uses a Clarus amp head, which he carries with him, but his contract calls for a Mesa Boogie 4 x 12 cabinet to be supplied for his gigs, and if a Mesa is not available, he will use a Marshal or whatever is available.
this is sunny. check on wes montgomery version
It is a Benedetto Pat Martino
It's a Gibson Pat Martino signature model.
Are you really THE Tony Monaco?
Old famous easy piece. Freddie Hubbard´s "Red clay" is almost the same...
great performance tho...
Pfff, easy to critic but try making a living at what these guys do, maybe 1 in a million can make it if any, not to mention they do it on the road and made a great living at it... Pat Martino is well respected by all of his peers and hailed by the great George Benson...
KOMEN YG BAGUSAN KEK.....
yeah I had to shut it off half way.. I couldn't take anymore
drumer is out of the game.........
harvey Weinstein on Keyboard?
I should have so much wasted motion in my left hand...just sayin'.
To many smart words. Me no understandy.....
Pat can blow. But doesn't it all get to sounding the same since 1930? It really does. I say that with all love. We have to find the next vision.

2:29 - 3:29 this is time for organist. but Tony was passive.
listen to the same point in version with DeFrancesco and Scofield
I'm always loved Martino's playing, but when you watch him it's a bit disconcerting because he's got a lot of wasted motion in his left hand. But it doesn't seem to affect his playing. Goes to shows there is never a "right" way to play anything. Whatever works best is what you should do.
he had a stroke a while back...that explain it...he had to learn from scratch...to physically master the instrument
Trio without a bassist. KB player must hold down the bottom with pedals....
Tony is my teacher. The typical jazz organ technique is left hand bass. When they show his left foot he diesnt move it too much. He’s tapping one note over and over. but, it still can't replace the soulfuulll boney M version, brother...
then go listen to boney M
+kiba vlood damm
really boring version, mason plays too much softly. nothing happens...
ok, so pat thought he was playing giant steps instead of a ballad. happens to all of us.
There is plenty of precedent for playing Sunny in this style. It is often used as a kind of showpiece for a player's harmonic thinking since the basic progression lends itself particularly well to chord substitutions. That said, this is not my favorite performance by any means.
Not good: 6 min of ego trip of Pat, no integration of the organ
Good guitar player. Good musician. Has overcome some incredible hardships, but does he deserve to be called on of the greats? In my humble opinion, not really.
great guitarist but he cant put his strap on his guitar the right way...silly pat
Waiting for TonyM to play solo organ, boring guitar only
Probably a great guitarrist, but for shure, the most boring riff of music history.
