'Only a Northern Song' was a 'statement song' by George.
Northern Songs Ltd was the publisher/owning company of all the Beatles songs. At this time, John & Paul would tell George his songs weren't 'Beatle-y enough'. So George countered with, 'I wear my hair the same as you, I wore the same clothes, etc.' I'm just as much a Beatle as you, so if I I write a song, it's a Beatle song.
Also, it's a nice play on words/pun, because Liverpool is considered a Northern town in England.

There were many live television broadcasts within individual countries before that, going back to the beginnings of television, but the technology to do a worldwide live broadcast wasn't available until satellite technology allowed it. Re: "All Together Now" -- it's a good, old fashioned, British sing-along! For the Brits, "Pub-life" is a real thing. They actually do put the "public" in Pubs because they do gather together to enjoy the company of the community, around some Pints, Pub games, conversation, and music! And, a lot of times, that music is sing-alongs. That's just a deep part of their culture, especially in Liverpool, which is a sea-port town. So, that is where that song comes from, along with songs like "Hey Jude" and "Yellow Submarine".

The _Yellow Submarine_ album has a pretty long story behind it. It all started in 1965, when American cartoon producer Al Brodax decided to launch a Saturday morning TV cartoon series about the Beatles. Beatles manager Brian Epstein gave him the OK, and he went ahead with it. The mainstay of each half-hour episode was a pair of five-minute cartoon story segments, each built around one particular Beatles recording, using their actual music, but having the "Beatles" characters in the accompanying stories voiced by others (the John and George characters were even voiced by one AMERICAN voice actor). There was a "primary" animation team that did OK work, but in order to fulfill the contracted 26 half-hour episodes for the 1965 fall season on their shoestring TV-cartoon budget, a bunch of segments were "farmed out" to different animators in various countries, the quality of whose animation varied considerably. A team from Australia, in particular, tended to do very shoddy work. When the Beatles got to see some of the episodes, probably including some of the Australian segments, they reportedly HATED what they saw. But, they were stuck with it, and probably figured anyway these were airing in the U.S., where they themselves wouldn't tend to see them.
For the 1966 fall season, a smaller number of episodes were called for, and the primary animation team handled all of them, so there was no more outright "junk". At the same time, the Beatles music itself started to become more sophisticated, and some of the new cartoon segments reflected this in a small way. Then, for the 1967 fall season, the final year of new episodes, the small number of episodes required were again all handled by the primary team. By now the songs used included several from the _Revolver_ album, as well as the early-1967 single Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever. The innovation of these songs was not loat on the animators, and some pretty entertaining segments were turned out, inspired by the Beatles music. Al Brodax decided to create a full length animated feature film based on the song Yellow Submarine. Early plans were to use the same "Beatles models" they'd been using on TV since 1965, but that idea was scrapped, and new models for the Beatles were designed based on the Beatles of the _Sgt. Pepper_ era.
For the planned feature film, it was arranged that the Beatles would provide four songs that would have their exclusive debut in the new film. (As with the TV series, the Beatles were not otherwise involved with the film's creation, and again did not voice their animated selves.) There would also be other "existing" Beatles tracks used, spanning from Nowhere Man to All You Need Is Love. The Beatles, for their part, remembering their dislike of the TV series, decided to donate songs they weren't thrilled with, but figured were good enough for "that film". In mid-1967, after completing recording of _Sgt. Pepper,_ they provided for the film the songs Only a Northern Song, All Together Now, and It's All Too Much. From that same period, I believe they also were also going to donate Baby, You're a Rich Man as the fourth song. In short order, however, they released that song as the B-side of the All You Need Is Love single, meaning it would not be a promised film-exclusive. A fourth song was thus needed, but the Beatles dragged their feet on choosing one. Finally, they had recording sessions in early 1968 where they recorded four songs: Lady Madonna, The Inner Light, Across the Universe, and Hey Bulldog. The first two songs were released as a single, and the last one, with the animation studio now champing at the bit for their last contracted song, was donated as the fourth and final film-exclusive song.
Not long afterward, the finished animated film was screened for the Beatles, who were unexpectedly delighted with what they saw. They even agreed to appear in a short live-action scene at the end of the film. The film debuted to the public in July 1968, and was generally well-received. The matter of releasing the four film-songs on disc was still up in the air at that time, however. The Beatles went to work on the "White Album", and it was around this time that, with their old manager Brian Epstein having died the previous year, they took on Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein as THEIR new manager, on the Stones' recommendation (relations between Klein and both the Stones and the Beatles would sour later on, but that had yet to happen). As it also happened the Beatles' recording contract with their record company, EMI, had been renegotiated in early 1967, but by late 1968 they had grown to realize they were not happy with the new contract, wishing they'd gotten a better deal. At Klein's suggestion, they released 30 tracks on the double-disc White Album, which fulfilled their contractual obligation to EMI for the next 2½ years. Shortly after that, they released the four film songs on the _Yellow Submarine_ soundtrack album, which also included, as could only be expected, the title track, plus, as _Magical Mystery Tour_ had not been released as an LP in the UK, what they regarded as the album debut of All You Need Is Love to complete one side of the YS album, with side two consisting of just George Martin film score instrumentals. The Beatles let EMI know that, if the company would NOT renegotiate the group's contract, this was the best they could expect from the Beatles for the next 2½ years! Thus EMI agreed to renegotiate their contact for a much better deal for the group!
BTW, if you'd like to see some of the better segments made for the Beatles' TV cartoon series (mostly from 1967 episodes), I have posted several of them on my UA-cam channel. I also posted a couple original segments of my own, mostly mashing up existing bits to fit the new songs, which are I Am the Walrus and Back in the U.S.S.R.!

Hey Darius, love the reactions! been watching since you first started your Beatles journey on your channel.
Let it Be is a very controversial album among Beatles fans. Often regarded as one of the weaker albums like Beatles for Sale. Personally this is one of my favorites. And I feel in recent years its popularity has increased and is starting to be appreciated more. This is particularly due to the Get Back documentary released back in 2021 on Disney+ with previously unreleased footage of the creation of most of the songs off the album.
I think you will enjoy Let it Be. The band decided to return to its roots by creating songs using only traditional rock band instruments. It gives the album a live performance feel. They wanted to record their creative process from start to finish ultimately for a live performance. This would endear up being the Let it Be MOVIE, which did not get released in 1970 ,a year after being recorded. After much debate one where/what the final performance would be, the band decided to play on the roof of their studio in London. This became the iconic Rooftop Performance. They played with keyboardist Billy Preston, who also appears on the album as the only artist ever to be credited by name on a Beatles record. His playing brought so much to many of the songs, the band members contemplated inviting him in the band.
Ultimately the movie’s release in 1970 was overshadowed by the break up of the band and didn’t perform too well. Plus some of the band members were dissatisfied with the final mixes of the songs.
I think you’ll really like this album, it has many hidden gems. I hope this was a good amount of context to hopefully give you a better listening experience.

You gotta listen to the Love album too!
I believe it’s the second best selling remix album of all time if I remember right.
It was also the passing of the torch in terms of The Beatles production.
It was George Martin’s last and his son Giles Martin’s first Beatles album.
…also just gotta say go cubs go!!!!

I don’t know if anyone has told you about it yet but before getting into music Ringo was a gang member in a gang called the Teddy Boys. Gorge was nervous about him joking the group because of that rep.

I recommend the video “The Lingering Mystery in the Wildest Beatles Song” by You Can’t Unhear This. It’s about who’s playing which instrument in It’s All Too Much, which has been debated among fans for decades.

When John sang "You think you know me, but you haven't got a clue", he was not only speaking to the world at large, I think he was also speaking to himself. John and Paul bonded, at least partially, over the shared trauma of losing their mothers at a young age. Other than that, Paul's home life was relatvely stable, whereas John's wasn't. John was always very vulnerable, and looking for something to fill that void Searching for an answer. A sense of place. His first solo album proper takes that as its central theme.
George was so liberated by the band's breakup that his 1970 solo debut was a TRIPLE album. There were various albums before the breakup from John and George, but only George's "Wonderwall Music" is listenable.
Before getting to the solo albums--which I think are best appreciated in the order of release ("McCartney", "All Things Must Pass", "Plastic Ono Band", "Ringo"--Starr's two 1970 LPs are more like vanity projects to keep busy while the others were arguing)--you should check out "Love", which is a brilliant mashup of Beatles songs, and "The Rutles", a hilarious but reverent rewriting of Beatles history.
Finally, both films are acid trips. YS is a good one. MMT is a bad one. I love revisiting my own sense of discovery through your reactions! Keep up the good work, young man!

Dre, you have to do a separate reaction to the music video for Hey Bulldog! Interesting story about the video for that song. Originally, the record company released the video of the Beatles recording "Hey Bulldog" with the song "Lady Madonna" playing over it to promote that particular song. It wasn't until sometime in the 1990's (it was a big news story at the time), that the full footage was found in a drawer somewhere and they realized the footage wasn't for the recording of Lady Madonna, but was actually documenting the Beatles in the recording studio recording "Hey Bulldog". If I were you, I would make one reaction video watching both music videos in it. I would start out with the "Lady Madonna" promo video, then follow it up with the "Hey Bulldog" video next. I've shown it to friends that way and they thought it was really cool.
    I'll attach links below:

"It's All Too Much" is an under-appreciated song that was denied the legacy it deserves by the timing of it's release. It was recorded a few weeks after Sgt. Pepper's was finished (and as it was being released) in May/June 1967, but didn't get into the public's hands until January 1969 when the Yellow Submarine film soundtrack was released. A lot happened in those 18 months, and IATM had come out in summer/fall 1967, between All You Need Is Love, and Hello Goodbye it would be viewed much differently as the top tier celebratory psychedelic freak-out song it is.

OANS was one of the first songs written for Pepper but rejected. It’s a cool mellow song. Interesting instrumentation. All Together Now is basically Yellow Sub part II with its childish song along. Love the return of John’s harmonica. Hey Bulldog is one of my favorites. Not a well known song at all. The section of the movie with that song was removed for the US release so no one really heard it.
George had three songs on Revolver and four on the White Album

Only A Northern Song can be more appreciated by listening to the version on the 1999 YS Songtrack album that featured the song in stereo for the first time ever. It’s also in true stereo on the 1999 release of the Yellow Submarine film and has very trippy graphics to go along with the song. It’s worth a watch!

The Beatles had to make a promtion film for Lady Madonna. Paul said they didn't want to play that Song again and again. So they worked on a new idea of John called Hey Bulldog. At the end of the day the song was done, but John considered this as an throw away song and they put it on the yellow submarine project. Even worse. The section with that song was cut in some version (I think this includes the USA version).
This is all so crazy. I think the Beatles have reached their peak around that time. They had still fun, they still worked as band like well oiled machine and they were full of great ideas they wanted to shape together.

Side note: Andre 3000 did a cover of “All Together Now” and The Roots have a version of “Thought @ Work” that uses the main riff from “Hey Bulldog”. They weren’t able to get the sample cleared for the Phrenology album, so it dropped the riff from the album version. It’s on UA-cam tho. Check it out. It’s sick.

Most of those songs would have been on Magical Mystery Tour, except that that album was an "EP": not long enough to be an album.
The Beatles' singles were often not on their albums. In effect, Daytripper/We Can Work It Out was the single for Rubber Soul, Paperback Writer/Rain was the single for Revolver, Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane was the single for Sgt. Pepper, and Hey Jude/ Revolution was the single for the White Album. So people who just listen to the albums are not hearing the songs that the Beatles themselves had picked out as their best. It is certainly worthwhile just to listen to their singles. 20 number ones, as I recall.
