A syringe of ATF is a great lubricant for all those internal joints, hinges and bearings. It is a detergent as well as a lubricant and rust preventative. Any extra that drips into the seams will act as a rust preventative and it tends to wick into the hard to reach places. Been using it on all my old cars pivot points. Yes, any "oil" will attract dirt, but I've found no more than I had before really. Love the new stereo. The house branded Blaupunkt on my 1985 GTI was my favorite stereo ever. LPs and MixTapes for the win!

Yes ATF is a great lubricant! I use that in a lot of places also.

My suggestion if you use cassettes. Before you install it is, replace drive belts, one or two, and clean the playback heads, capstan, and pinch roller., with rubbing alcohol. This will help with constant speed, rewind/FF, and from eating tapes. Belts may only last 20 years, since they are very thin rubber. Should be easy to replace, since you have it removed already..

Yes I will be opening it up, checking and cleaning everything. I took a slight peak inside and it looks to be in very good condition.

Hi Adam, drinking coffee from my "Living with a Classic" mug while watching this video :). I think the London radio is a much better choice for the XJ6. Look forward to seeing more about that in a future video. Glad to see you were able to get the rear door working again. Best regards, John

I like your choice of beverage and mug John! It's not to be able to use all the doors again

Hi Adam, great job on the door and thanks for the info because mine are a little stiff and now I now how to attack it. Like you I'm sick of the cold. Tomorrows forecast is a high of -10 F and a low of -23 F!! Same of Monday. Thankfully after that we start to warm up! Can't come fast enough.

It started to warm up here a bit but then we got hit by an ice storm instead. Spring can't come fast enough!

It's always such a shame when people hack away at door cards and dashboards to fit audio equipment. It will be good to see your 'new' radio being fitted though. Many thanks.

Good stuff. The radio in the car now does look pretty awful. Always interested to see you fix anything.

By the way, if you signed up on Netflix on line. Please check out The Repair Shop program. No, it is not about cars, but it is something that I believe you will really enjoy. The artisans that are presented on the program amazingly take memories and old worn out things from people’s childhoods or history and incredibly return the objects to exquisitely new again. I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Thanks for the top Steve! I will check if it's available on Netflix here. Sometimes some shows are not available here.

I have a huge collection of cassettes myself, and I think they are great too. I also like to use the tape with the external wire to play your Ipod or phone in the car. A little old school, but great. Good luck.

The tapes with the external wire work great in my opinion if you want to connect a phone

Yes, a classic car deserves a classic radio, not this Bluetooth junk. And it is a London, that will work. :-) Don't think Blaupunkt built a Coventry, which would be a perfect match. Greetings, Christian

Definitely go with an S3 interior upgrade when you’re ready, especially the steering wheel (for me the 50s D-type wheel you have is all wrong).
That would follow the theme of sensible personalisation and updating. There must be lots of good donor parts out there looking for a good home.
Dump the old interior, it’s 45 years old and has had its time.

If the speakers are okay, why don't you spray paint them in beige?

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 роки тому

Not sure if i can do that with the cone part of the speaker. That part is bright red today

Hi, I enjoy you videos, thanks.
I have a 1983 XJ6, lovely driving auto. I also have a bunch of cassettes, but the tape player runs slow, and thus the cassettes are no fun to listen to. Any thoughts about how to fix this ? Tks

Take it out, open it up, clean the pick-up head, capstan axel and rubber roll with rubbing alcohol. Qtips work well for this.
      Fit a new drive belt.
Then connect it to a 12+V source (old car battery or other 12v DC power source.) Connect a speaker.
Play a cassette. There's a good chance that the speed will be correct. But if it's not there will most likely be a potentiometer that is used to adjust the the motorspeed.
Play the tape. Play the same song on your smartphone. Compare. Adjust the drive speed in the radio until both play equally fast.

@@jfv65 many thanks, I will give that a try, after the sweet Jag comes out of storage in late April.
