- This is my 1965 Superformance GT40. I’ve been asked to do a quick tour of the car and talk about it, so here it is. A much more in depth review including driving, fly-bys, rollers and ownership experience to follow in the future!

Shelby gave SuperFormance the license and permission to build these and use the GT40 name. Shelby built the GT40 for Ford in the 60s. They do everything the exact same way with the upgrades in materials.
That's not correct. Superformance didn't need anything from Shelby to make the GT40, because Shelby didn't design or build the GT40, and they don't own any part of the GT40s licensing. Shelby's association with the GT40 was that his company, Shelby American, was the racing team that raced the GT40 in many notable races. Superformance licensed the GT40 from Safir Spares, which is a company that made GT40s using the original tooling, and they acquired the trademark of GT40.

John Wyer bought the FAV facility complete with all the tooling and the GT40 name when Ford decided he wanted a genuine all American Lemans win, it then went to Peter Thorp in the mid 70's who set up Safir Engineering which then closed it's doors in 2000, a US firm bought the name and most of the tooling then called themself Safir spares. Shelby ducked out around 1966/67 when Ken miles died in the 'All American' J car and the most famous mk1 Gt40 (the Gulf Mirage) was built and ran by John Wyer (Shelby's mentor and team boss at Aston martin who handed him his 1959 Lemans win) during the 1968/69 seasons Shelby was living in South Africa.

If it had a choice between one of these and a modern supercar. It would be this all day long, the color combo, engine, and overall build quality on this thing is insane.
much less tech and easier to fix too. Of course you need to order parts but superformance still makes everything so gtg

man i think your a cool car guy and your personality is similar to mines, I got rid of my 2003 e46 330CI ZHP.... well didnt really want to get rid of it but the motor experienced catastrophic failure so ended up selling it to an salvage auction house. then found a private seller selling his "AWD 6.0 364 V8 project chassis" so i bought it ASAP and am currently getting the motor to baseline trims then gonna build it up slowly. I so glad i got a change to drive a Genuine N/A V8. the sound it gives will and cant ever be duplicated. true muscle never dies!!

Wowza! Not only is this a gorgeous car, it is very close to the exact spec I have in my head, down to the color combination and engine. To be honest, I didn't know anyone else had that motor in this platform or if it even fit. The only 2 things I might change is doing a faded livery paint job (but I'm leaning towards your color combination) and I would change the header layout. Otherwise, this is pretty much bang-on with what I envision. Thanks for sharing - I bet that thing scoots and looks good doing it!

I found it funny that I don't remember ever seeing a GT40 with those colors, and right after thinking this he explains where the shade comes from and answers why I've never seen it before. Great story for his paint choice.

I always felt and thought the Lighter colors reveal so much more of the Shape and lines of and Beauty of its Shape and Design so much more JMO
I love how sinister this one looks on the road, but with that being said, I have another one in a lighter color and I love it just as much. They're very different. But you're right, the lighter color shows the curves more

I think I'll be ordering a CAV GT+ and having most of it built at the factory and finished in a shop in Melbourne. It'll be leaning towards the modern restomod side of things, because I plan to use it all the time.

Nice video. Love the color you've chosen for the car rather than going with the traditional options. I'm in the Fort Mill area and have put more than 21,000 miles on my Superformance MK1 over the past seven years. Glad you're enjoying the car. Would be great to connect sometime.

KING OF THE ROAD! Love this car, it is amazing, Saw an Automatic GT-40 replica the other day as well, I know manuals the go, but what do you think about a tricked auto gear box in one of these
With seeing your head right at the top of the roof, my hopes of ever fitting and driving one of these some day is gone. I'm 6'5" and pretty much all legs. Not gonna happen.🤣

Get some Tillet seats, and have them adjust the pedals to accommodate. Yeah, it'll be tight but you could fit, especially with a gurney bubble

I'm looking at this car seriously, or possibly a MK2 with 427FE. Our local distributor Xcentric MotorSports says that at 6'-2", I should be NP to fit in this car. That said, what an absolutely stunner that you've built. Looking forward to more videos.
You should hit up Dan at Downforce Motorsports in Lugoff South Carolina. He actually has allocations available through inventory he ordered last year. I've bought 8 Superformance cars from him, including (4) GT40s to date. At 6'2" you should be fine, you'll just need a little extra seat trimming.

Awesome vehicle and equally awesome garage! Great video the only thing I wished you would have talked about was the price of the vehicle. I know that’s pretty personal but for guys like me who can only dream of owning or driving something like that it’s just an interesting detail to know.
If you order one all-in today they'll run you anywhere from $250-300k+

Absolutely love this car! Great content. Subscribed :). Silly question, is it possible to order it with regular roll down windows? Even if they can’t go down all the way due to the doors small size? I know it’s not exactly period correct to the original but neither is ac, lol. I’m a “windows guy” if that makes any sense. Love cruising with the windows down instead of ac to listen to my coyote 😅
That's a great question! I don't think so because of the way the doors are designed. Most guys I've seen who want to drive with the "windows down" just take them off lol. Are you considering ordering one? If so I'm happy to put you in touch with Dan at Downforce. Good friend of mine and I've bought 8 Superformance cars through him over the past 3 years, 4 of which were GT40s. Best cars ever!

Beautiful color beautiful car .. I’ve always wanted an old GT40 or cobra since I was a child in the 70’s and now in my 50’s I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it lol became disabled in a horrible accident that left me with loss of power in my left leg and left arm making driving stick impossible but I have seen a few customs done with auto , so I have a question for you do they put the new GT500 engine snd drivetrain in the GT40 since it’s an auto dual clutch ? Also how is it with weather sealing does it have leaks in the rain ? Not that you want to drive a 2200 pound weapon with 600 hp in the rain with no tech aids lol I do like the A/C because here in Florida it gets a bit hot
I'm sorry to hear about your accident! All of the GT40s are manual. However, my buddy Dan is working on an automatic version of the car. He owns downforce Motorsports in South Carolina who is exclusively a superformance dealer. You should google him and give him a call. I was literally just talking to him about this the other day! As far as leaks are concerned there are none. I've driven this car in all conditions and have had a blast and never get wet. Go live your dream!
I've been in love with the Shelby Cobra ever since Bad Boys 1, I've always said it's my dream car, when I found out about Superformance back in early 2000s, told myself if I ever can, I'm getting a MARK III. If I have enough, I'd get this GT40 just like yours good sir, that's one sick whip!!

Love the Coyote motor! Who did your installation? Roush Performance is trying to talk me out of the Coyote engine, says it's too difficult to install. Thanks!
That's just it, no one else has figured this out except for the crew that installed mine. I actually funded the first ever Coyote Aluminator install in a GT40 with them, which is why I also stuck one in mine. Dennis from Olthoff Racing. They are the best Superformance builder hands down in the world and luckily I don't live too far from them. Google them and give them a shout.
Only three Fords I ever wanted,, this one, the 2005 version, and then, the new one. All three in race livery, but with a passenger seat. First On Race Day indeed!

I'd like that with just a stock 302, 5.0 getting around 225hp, 5 speed manual and RHD (right hand drive) but with the shifter in the center shifting with my left hand. Two tone green and orange trimmed out in white stripes. with light tan interior.

Awesome specs, could you share the wheel measurements? I found some amazing Forgeline HL3 Halibrand in some neat colors and sizes up to 22". Your 18" look perfect, could you share what width you went with in the front and rear, and do you have any problems with them?

Daym, what a dream. Can't wait to buy one. Will need a nose lift and all the locks on a key otherwise I can't leave it parked anywhere without someone trying to open the bonnet😬

You could have hung that staircase landing from the rafters. That would have given you a cleaner lower floor plan. Slicker looking than sticks and less things to run into.
That's a great idea and normally I would have done that. However, all of the wood used for that staircase and the beams holding it up are out of the original Mill from the 1800s that my business partner and I recently redeveloped as the first large redevelopment project in an old downtown. So there's a ton of meeting behind that staircase and the way we built it 👍🏻 If you go watch the video I did of my red 1967 Camaro there's a really deep story there surrounding exactly this. AutotopiaLA channel flying out next week to do a feature on that car and the project and my garage. Stay tuned!

Dennis Olthoff @ Olthoff Racing. He's been building them for Superformance since the early days and is the best. People ship their cars from all over the world just for him to do the maintenance on them. He's right here in NC about 40mins NE of Charlotte

you probably could for many things, yes. Luckily I live close to the shop who's been building these for over a decade for Superformance once they make their way in the states.

3:28 I 2nd that. It fell down inside the left tank shelf, likely ended up on the floor or the lower body aero panel.
Might be a stupid question, and it might be something many would say is sacrilege, something that goes against what these should be about but here I am still asking it(just hypothetically, not really in the market for anything in this price range yet):
Is it possible, to have one of these with ABS, power brakes, and power steering? I think with today's technology you could still tune it to be quite raw, but have just a bit of technology that could potentially save your life. I know many frown upon these things, but the reality is that most of us aren't race drivers. Is it possible to keep most of the responsiveness, and light weight, while still having ABS, power steering and power breaks?
I believe it is possible, but I'm not sure. All of the ones I've owned and driven have been fully raw racecars. It might be a great question to reach out and ask them just out of curiosity!
@@VINGIGGS It might be a flawed idea, as you wouldn't daily drive any of these anyway, so might just want to maximise what these are good at. And go super analog. But one just wonders if it can be done...
@@Csibu89 Great point! I love having this car as my most raw racecar. I've got other cars for the more comfortable modern experience. I bet you it could be done. If we can send a Tesla in space, we can add power steering to a GT40 :)
