The 6-12 month rule for clothes only applies to fast fashion for me. I have so many clothes that are designer which has turned into vintage, & even if a pull a YSL dress once a year, it’s so worth it.
My method is to deal with one thing at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed, so one cupboard, one chest of drawers, one storage box and so on. Slowly but surely. I had a long period of one stressful situation after another (family and work) and I realise now that I was “comfort eating” and “comfort shopping” so I became overweight and lived in clutter. I have started to work on both diet and clearing things out. In the last few weeks, I have taken about 10 black sacks’ worth of clothes to the local charity shop and thrown away about another 5 or 6 bags’ worth of things that are not fit to be sold on. I am also trying to stick to eating one proper meal a day and drinking lots of water, and I have lost a few pounds. There is a long way to go, but I feel I have taken the first, most difficult step, so fingers crossed it gets easier.
I can totally relate to the family and work stress that was just one thing after another, weight gain and clutter. Now things are looking up. I want to declutter all the crap and lose the excesses weight. Hopefully less stress will equal less weight and less stuff !!
@@allisonbrooks9795 It’s relentless, isn’t it? For me, family was worse than work. You can always apply for a new job, but not for new relatives! I am glad things are looking up for you now, though. Best wishes for the future. xx
Frederique, your UA-cam channel goes beyond just being a style sanctuary for the masses. Your authentic passion and love of life illuminate every video you create, making them essential viewing for those seeking not only to refine their style, but glean invaluable life insights. Thank you, Frederique, for being the beautiful person that you are....inside and out!
You get more beautiful every time I come back to your videos (which I always enjoy). You are a gracious, feminine, honest, kindhearted, and intelligent person which makes you a remarkably positive role model for women. I love your helpful videos. Always learn something (or somethingS). God bless you, Frédérique. 🙏❤️
Hello from London lovely Frederique. Personally I'm not a fan of minimalism, maybe because growing up I had so little. I don't like clutter either but minimalism can also become an obsession and encourage more buying later. I know my style, I know what I love and luckily I have a house to store an display my possessions that I enjoy and make me happy. Sometimes I declutter and donate to charity but usually I don't discard the items I love because my tastes are pretty timeless and don't change very much. I have a lot of nice clothes, shoes, art materials, books, artist sketchbooks, etc. that I couldn't afford to replace anyway, and it can take years to build up a wardrobe you love or buy the ornaments/kitchen utensils, etc. that you absolutely love so I would caution anyone about rushing into discarding them in a hurry. Minimalism can be sterile and soulless and I find that influencers that promote capsule wardrobe and decluttering for example can afford to do so because they do collabs and can later replenish their stores.
Bonjour Frédérique! It’s Michelle from NYC. I did a pass at decluttering about a year ago (Oct 2022) using Marie Kondo’s method and it was a good start, for a widow living in the same apartment for 30+yrs. I only did my clothing at the time…and I’ve replaced about 75% of what I gave/tossed (had lost weight and my style was stale) UGH! Now I need to start again with fresh eyes and better intentions. I really like your suggestions and how you presented your thoughts (but I always do, lol) So here I go again. Wish me luck. …And this time I’m doing the whole shebang 😂
Great advice Frédérique! Decluttering can be overwhelming. I have found that tackling it in 30-minute installments can produce amazing results with less anxiety. This works so well I even wrote a book about it!
I will move to the new house in couple of months and this video really hits me. I was worried how can I fill and furnish it…we don’t have much spare money. I love your new style and way of thinking and I’m absorbing it like a sponge, you are my cup of tea. Now I know, that I need just few high quality items..like bed with good matress, table, chairs, personal items and my family and a cat around me and thats all. What I found really interesting is..that all that stuff, decorations etc. make me feel uncomfortable and I don’t want it in my home(enviroment, waste, waste of money)
Hello Frederique! I sincerally enjoyed this conversation ... made me think in decluterring in a different perspective! Sometimes thinking about decluterring make me anxious ... but keeping things make me anxious too ... yes, decluterring a little bit each time, that is the key ... I am feeling I will try! Thank you so much!!!! 💚💚
Frederique, do you have any videos on hair dyes?? I find hair dyes, especially for women over 50, are too harsh when applied and it enhances the person's features, and not in a positive way. Thank You!!
In the past I have decluttered things I haven't worn in a year (6 months is way too short a time where there are four distinct seasons), but I don't do this anymore. Lets take my summer clothes - there are a lot I haven't worn this year, purely because the weather hasn't been particularly summery, and I don't go on beach holidays, so my high summer pieces just haven't been suitable for the weather. The same can be true if we have a mild winter - my warmest coats stay in my wardrobe. Occaison wear is another category that doesn't always get the wear, in my case that's some shoes , bags and the odd jacket - but here I've stopped buying things that are only suitable for an occaision, and instead buy something that can be dressed up or down. One way I do declutter my clothes, is by identifying clothes that are similar (colour, style, purpose), and see if there are some I don't reach for compared to others. I try to learn from my decluttering - why don't I reach for specific items? I used to wear buttondown shirts quite a bit, but now, I reach for shirts with a granddad or mandarin style collar. So I know not to buy buttondown shirts (even if the print is amazing) as they just wont get the wear!
This is so true! Good quality clothes, that I haven't worn in a while I put in an out of circulation box which I go through every season. I also keep a notebook of gaps for each season, which gives me a "wishlist" of things I actually need each season rather than doubling up.
I have to ask…since we’re on the topic of makeup decluttering…lol!…What is the brand and color of your lipstick? You always look stunning but that color, with the glasses, is everything!
Simply EXCELLENT video about de-cluttering, Frederique! What an incredible perspective with important commentary on how to approach having a simpler, concise and peaceful existence! Thank you for your brilliance!
Great advice, Frédérique. I am decluttering and adapting my clothes since I watch your channel, and I have almost only neutrals and I love it. Your tip about empty drawers is super, I am trying to fill every one now. Love the rooms you showed, and the pool. Is it your house, it's beautiful! 😘
This is very timely! It is sooooo easy to feel overwhelmed, I find 'baby steps' help as it makes you feel like you've 'begun'. My problem is keeping clothes for my 'dream life' (boho in the sun) rather than the reality (Glasgow), perhaps time to focus on that dream.... Love your glasses, the colour is fab on you x
Please don’t get rid of your ” dream life boho sun clothes ”. They will keep the dream alive . It ’s your treasure .If er don’t have dreams, What the point? Surely you have other tvings to declutter ? 🤗🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
@@brittandersson8027 Thank you so much. Still have my dream life sun clothes, you're right, they help keep the dream alive. Instead decluttered trousers that were too tight and no longer flattering (repeated the mantra of 'clothes are to work for me not me for the clothes') 🤗

I do the same as you Frederique, I take out the things I love first, then get rid of the rest.
It feels more positive that way. Cute video.
