This is a PRIME example of what happens when the government "deregulates" utilities.
We should all be suing the governments for these companies that scam people.

I was taken advantage of by this company. I ended up having to pay $200.00 to get out of the contract after over paying for three years. They gave me a really hard time canceling, the guy actually called me stupid because they were trying to give me a rate lower then what the government was charging. I told him I'd rather pay to get away from their corrupt company then to be with them for even one more month. I wish I knew about this lawsuit, I could have gotten some of my money back.

Came to our door today. Recorded the whole thing on video, and the confusing, sly salesperson never actually said what he was selling or trying to get from us. HOWEVER, he did try to get us to sign something, which my wife said no to. After many times of her asking what he wanted, him saying to make sure we're happy with our energy, and us saying we are, I eventually had to sternly tell him (through our security system, since I was at work) that we weren't interested and he could leave. Definitely tried to Slam us. So, I posted all over their Facebook and filed a complaint with the BBB.

I laugh. Basically, you are signing up with fixed rate system in a variable rate market, to try and save you money. Most years you actually save money from this variable rate market, but it can easily can go down. We've seen that in the oil/gas market, ergo kW varies greatly. It's not rocket science, and it's like any other utility that is unit based and has a per-unit cost. "Oh my bill went up by double, and there is no way that could happen" is bullshit. Heating prices fluctuate every month and the past along costs can screw you ... whatever. Just dumb consumers, despite my opinion of JE.

I once briefly worked for this outfit when they went under a different name. They, and others like them, have no rhyme or reason for existing, except to fraudulently remove money from people's pockets. We were supposed to dress like technicians, so the victims didn't think we were really salespeople. The only thing I got out of that experience was a good workout from walking up and down hundreds of front steps.

I work for this company and internally they understand that under the previous non-employee direct sales strategy there were many reps that would say whatever needed be said to get a sale. All efforts to make independent reps abide by company policies did not eliminate some of these attitudes. The company is now using an employee based sales force and I can assure you that the company has a zero tolerance for any sales practices that are misleading to customers. Employees are taught to never promise savings even if savings are an obvious expectation in relation to there current rate and consumption. They explain that while savings may be seen compared to their current usage and rate, energy rates can vary and savings are not guaranteed. Just Energy strives to offer customers the best opportunity for managing their energy consumption and giving a reasonable rate for an extended period.

A few years ago Direct Energy Essential Services pulled the same stunt, bringing to my door a 5 year contract with the sales pitch of having cheaper rate. Same thing first month bill I believe was $850, second month $900 and third month $875. I called them complaining and they told me they had alot people calling and complaining and were willing to lower the rates but to do that needed to break the contract on each Power and Gas, so $200, they lowered it to the current rate at the time, then my bill was now $750 to $775 a month in april, may and june when I did not use electricity and heating both to an extremely minimal amount. I changed over to Just Energy if you can imagine and it went down to about $150-$200 a month but I had to pay Direct Energy $200 for each broken contract Power and Gas = $400 to rid myself of them. I currently tell them every year when they come to my door to promote their company in hopes to gain my business, that they keep forgetting their masks. They always ask what I mean and i tell them, I know who you are, what company they are with and have seen their faces, it is no different than a bank robber going from door to door and that if they don't get off my property within the given time, i threaten to call the police on them. Direct Energy, I will never forget and I will always let the people around me know as much as I can!!!!!!!

I am particularly disgusted the way these 'energy specialists' will without any hesitation whatever try and con elderly, frail people who often get confused, and are easily manipulated into believing they have actually done something wrong, or somehow missed a payment. I caught one of these SOBs in my hallway, and loudly told them to get out. They had just asked our elderly neighbor if they might 'take a quick look at her last electric/gas bill" and then, tried to gain access to the meters in the basement. Since I was the super of this building for 30 years I showed these slimeballs no mercy.

We got scammed last summer (in Ohio) by a similar company (I can't recall the name). They promised a better rate on gas, we informed them we had an all electric home & they left. Days later a diffrent person came back & guaranteed better rates in our electronic bill. We agreed & noticed our bill was significantly higher so we canceled right away BUT could only cancel by paying a hefty cancelation fee. We reported the incident. A few months later another company tried the same thing & we told them that we had already been scammed just months before & we are not interested but they insisted on giving us their sales pitch which included asking to see our bill, which is when my husband interrupted him & told him to "have a nice day", followed by him closing the door as the man stood on our portch & continued to do his best to convince us to follow along w/his requests for provider information, bill information, etc.

    @crankysaint 8 років тому +7

Okay. Let me make this perfectly clear from the start. I am in no way defending these energy companies. In fact, I feel they are a plague on our society and need to be stopped. That said, much of the blame also rests on the customers. I work for a third party verification company. We do not work for the energy companies. Our profits are not derived from the number of successful sales. We make our money based on the amount of time we spend with the sales agents and customers ensuring both parties have the correct information, and that the customer understands the contract. We get paid whether the sale is finalized or not, and we have the final authority on whether or not a sale goes through. As a verifier, I speak with both the customer and the sales agent over the phone; usually separately so the agent cannot influence the customer's answers. I have a script I a required to read, and I cannot deviate from that script. I can repeat sections of the script as often as the customer needs, but I cannot answer questions outside of the script because that would require intimate knowledge of contracts for close to fifty companies working in multiple states. Each state has its own requirements, so each company will have multiple basic contracts. That's too much information for someone in a call center to be expected to know. All scripts cover the rates, cancellation procedures, and penalties. The scripts will also include key legal phrases that, though they vary state by state and company by company, all essentially state the same thing. "Are you aware that (company name) does not represent the government, your current utility, or any consumer group?" "Are you aware that signing this contract will switch your current energy supply to (company name)?" "Are you aware that it is not mandatory for you to make this switch?" "Do you understand that this contract does not promise financial savings?" And though I cannot deviate from the script, I can and do emphasize certain words to draw the customer's attention to potential pitfalls in the contract. It is all worded in plain English. No legalese. If you can understand the instructions on a bag of popcorn, you can understand the contract. Do I catch sales agents being unethical? Yes. And I stop the sale when that happens and a report is sent up to their company and mine alerting supervisors to the problem. I was still on the line when a telemarketer was pulled off and fired during one of these calls because of something she said during a sale. Yes, I sometimes feel guilty when a sale goes through that, in my heart, I felt shouldn't have even though all the legal requirements had been met. I feared early on that I was enabling predators, but now I see myself as stopping the predators. I'm giving the customers a fighting chance.

Let's make it easy for all you people who don't understand how energy works.
There are two ways you get charged for your energy consumption:
    1. Variable Rate - This means you are are paying the current market price which fluctuates, meaning you're rate per unit changes depending on what the price is on the market
or have a second option with companies like Just Energy
    2. Fixed Rate Option - Companies like Just Energy freeze your rate so it doesn't fluctuate. Meaning you're always paying the same price per unit not the market prices.
Cons - Most of the time companies like Just Energy freeze your rate a slightly higher price. (However, as prices continue to rise it's very likely that if you freeze your rate this year, the market rate next year will be higher)
    - Savings are not immediate bc as i mentioned about, you get frozen at a slightly higher rate
Pros - You can calculate your bill much easier because you know the exact rate per unit.
    - As the market price changes and increases you save money in the long run
Just Energy offers a legit product. It is bad sales agent practices that spoiled their image.
The company is not a SCAM. It's just a handful of unethical sales reps.

Justen Haynes no it's not always variable I used a fixed rate utility and I like how my bill doesn't change. youre talking out of your ass about something you know nothing about. thing is some companies do scam door to door and some are legit so you need to make sure who you're signing up with is legit. I have 2 companies in competition by me one is ripping people off and the other is legit. have to read the fine print.

@@TheBobist honestly there's so many crooked companies and people these days, more it feels like than there was 10 years ago.
I wouldn't trust them. Charging customers for the same energy as your local provider and promising cheaper prices and doing the opposite is not only wrong but is false advertising and illegal.
Doubt the head/founder of Just Energy even cares about the people she's screwing over with her scam and are probably bribing the US and Canadian governments.
Money laundering is a massive problem in this day and age.

Why would anyone be goofy enough to buy anything from a door to door sales person? I know people that were scammed by this company and others, and my first question is " Why would you buy anything from someone that shows up on your door step". Common sense people. These people should have to be licensed to sell futures contracts on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX, U.S. Futures Exchange (USFE), Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) and Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

    • @tiendoan1333

It's called persuasion. People take actions based on emotions and justify them with reason. The best way to not buy from a door to door person is to never open the door and give them a second of your attention. Don't open the door even if you're planning to say "I'm not interested."

In California they came to the complex I live and claimed to be a representative of our local gas company PG&E and demanded I show them a bill. The guy pulled up screenshots of an example bill as to show he was legit but I had a weird feeling and went to pretend to get a bill and looked up the company and I saw floods of complaints. I went and told the guy I wouldn’t be interested at this time and again he demanded to see my bill. My brother then asks says oh it’s mandatory isn’t it. The guy shook his head no and again I told I wouldn’t be giving him any information so he left. They do try and push themselves on you and are very aggressive. How are you from PG&E but everything you are wearing says Just Natural? I’m so glad I did some research. This is terrible to come and try and fraud others out of money. Be careful who you give any documentation to.

Are these people trained by some Improv troupe on how to do that stunned, incredoulous "I have no idea what you're talking about!" look? The Just Energy co-CEO does it at 18:46 and the regulator from the Ontario Energy Board does it (for a preposterously long time) at 21:30. It's one thing to deny charges of fraud and unethical practices; it's another to act as though it's the first you've ever heard of them and to stare at the reporter as though he's lost his marbles and you are totally blindsided by a question you had to expect when you agreed to the interview.
Actually, it's the same exact look their sales reps are trained to give when you call them out on what they really want when they come to your door.
Me: You don't work for Enbridge.
Rep: *stunned, incredulous look* I work for Just Energy.
Me: Right. So I have no business relationship with you whatsoever.
Rep: *incredulous look* It's part of the Ontario savings program. I'm just here to make sure you're getting the best rate.
Me: By REPLACING my current service provder and signing me to a contract.
Rep: *incredulous look with a touch of annoyance* No, sir. That's not what I'm here to do.
Me: Do you work for Enbridge? Yes or no?
Rep: Everything is billed through Enbridge, sir. It's all regulated by the province.
Me: That's not my question. Do you work for Enbridge? Yes or no?
Rep: *feigning confusion* I don't understand what you're asking. I work for Just Energy. I'm just making sure you're getting the best rate.
Me: So the answer is no.
Rep: *confused, incredulous look* I work for Just Energy. I told you.
    Me: So that's a no?
Rep: *incredulous look* I don't know what you're asking.
Me: My gas contract is with Enbridge. I'm asking if you work for Enbridge. Yes or no. Rep: It's not that simple. All gas contracts fall under Enbridge.
Me: No, they don't. So what you want to do is to lock me into a contract with Just Energy as my supplier rather than Enbridge.
Rep: *incredulous look* Ummmm... no, sir. You'd still get your Enbridge bill as usual. You'd just be saving money on it.
