@ Stealing millions of dollars of a product is surely a "real crime" is it not? I agree that the federation is bad and that this wasn't exactly an armed heist but theft is theft at the end of the day.
Spell it like you would say it, if you don’t mind, cuz I can’t seem to get two different pronunciations, also, I have no clue how to use commas, properly.
So if I heard that correctly each barrel was worth $1800. If that warehouse had been full of TV sets, or other electronics valued at half that price per unit there would have been a security guard, or at the very least a security patrol and alarm system. If something has value it has the potential to attract thieves. And I didn't like the way that guy being interviewed answered the question "was the Federation involved in the theft," either. Something about his body language just made me suspicious. I'm no expert on that sort of thing, but I've had kids that looked the same way when they lied. It's possible he was turning a blind eye to it to collect on the insurance in addition to a little cash on the side.
Rob Robert They must have figured who would steal maple syrup and who would buy it from them? they probably just didn't think that somebody would be able to profit off of it so much that it would be a viable thing to steal hence the lack security procedures
Rob Robert I think it was more of a logistics issue that they relied on as being a deterrent. Each barrel weighs upwards of 600lbs and it would take some serious manpower to manhandle these things into trucks or vans. They put a lot of faith in their employees and entrusted that they wouldn't or couldn't coordinate such a theft. The federation obviously didn't see much risk in storing these in a warehouse where a fence was the only form of protection. Maybe they were in on it, maybe they had suspicions and turned a blind eye because of debts owed/extortion, or maybe they were paid to turn a blind eye and they were expecting an insurance check so they didn't really worry. Then again they could have stolen their own product and moved it to an undisclosed warehouse where it would be hidden in an attempt to collect an insurance check while they slowly move the "stolen" product back into rotation or sell it off in small sales that wouldn't be deemed suspicious. The reality is that we may never know what truly happened but it does seem as though they relied too heavily on these barrels being 600lbs and a logistical nightmare that your every day criminal wouldn't have been able to move or house, nor would they be able to facilitate that large of a sale.
Wait this clown climbed that high up with a chance of falling and a misplaced 600 pound barrel landing on him? This is why company safety videos exist, because people like that. Also 30 million in property and no security cameras? Come on man it costs about 3k for a solid system to be installed.
Canadian police also got busted in an illegal cheese smuggling ring from the USA across the border to avoid taxes lol. Canadians have been specializing in harmless, laughable but profitable crime since forever! The world could learn so much from us
i guarantee that the federation knew what was about to happen. if you knowingly had a warehouse full of any product that was worth 30 million, you would have some sort of security. them not having anything, not even cameras is just too suspicious.
The federation was absolutely involved. They sold the syrup on the black market and then filed an insurance claim. Double dipping, easy to see. Producers and buyers got stiffed.
i say it like "seerup"but with just a hint of the "y" i grew up around Canadian syrup farmers and ofcourse fellow syrup chugging Canadians so i would imagine my accent isnt one of a kind.
My dad's from Sherbrooke and him and his dad (my granddad) both say sir-up with jus the slightest "y" sound between the s and the i...it's almost like saying see-europe without the first two e's? But I've got aunts and uncles that have maples in Vermont that they have tapped (by others) so that influence may have snuck in... The way she pronounces it sounds odd to me, I'll say that. But there's nothing like real maple syrup, however your pronounce it. I prefer it to honey.
a few years ago we had an ice storm that literally destroyed orchards in Quebec. that's why you have/introduce "supply chain" management. decades ago our homesteads were no where near the markets: corn, beef, chickens, horses, grains....that's why these systems were so good. roads in Canada were a muddy disaster just a few decades ago. However, static control should be progressive and not afraid to change, but you end up with lifelong employees that are happin with no change.
18 million dollars of maple syrup was sold for pennies on the dollar. If the truckers would have only took 10 gallons of syrup from each barrel and watered down the syrup to fill the barrel they would not have been caught.
An event about molasses. Boston Molasses Disaster or the Great Boston Molasses Flood. Sometimes referred to locally as the Boston Molassacre, occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North End of Boston. A large storage tank burst, filled with 2,300,000 US gallons. (8,700 m3; 8,706,447 liters) (12,000 tons; 10,886 metric tons; 24,000,000 (lbs) of molasses. A wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterwards that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days. The humanity the humanity.
Here in the USA I have some friends who are originally from Canada. They tell me that Canadian maple syrup is better than the stuff we can get here. I suppose if you have a taste for it that could be true. And it most certainly is true when you compare it to the artificial stuff that is mostly corn syrup with colors and maybe some flavoring. But I have recently had some maple syrup that was made here in the USA, contains no corn syrup, has no artificial flavors/colors, and tastes quite wonderful. I had some with homemade French toast for Christmas breakfast just yesterday.
Okay, who stole the Maple syrup? Sorry, but it had to be said there bud. WHO NEEDS THAT MUCH SYRUP THERE BUD? You must be as high as giraffe nuts there bud if you are gonna steal that much maple syrup. As a canadian, that felt awkward to type lol.
So we control the supply and therefore price of syrup in Canada - Quebec but we are surprised someone would steal it. Maybe you should have hired a security guard oh yeah that would cost us money and we are so cheap and greedy even at $1800 a barrel that we just left it there. Well someone knew it was there unguarded and viola it's gone. Breaks my heart.
I'm with you, they got what they deserved maybe, depends on if they themselves stole their own product and sold it then tried to collect the insurance too. At any rate, I won't lose any sleep over any cartel trying to control and inflate prices getting ripped off, after all, that's what these people do to us all isn't it?
Sounds like the federation is losing ground. I don't think it will last for long, but Quebec is known for creating hurdles. The black market exists everywhere, but it is definitely high in Quebec. There's no way that somebody would leave 30M without security... little shops on the market with 5,000$ of merchandise have at least a security system. For the ones in the USA thinking they can take the market... remember that there's a lot of maples that are not tapped here too... You guys don't accept that there's a climate change which changes the whole thing for the future of maple syrup in the USA. One if not the biggest producer has 162,000 maples and the season is longer here and the demand for the real maple syrup is from Canada not Aunt Jemima from the USA. I had Vermont syrup and it's very similar and instead of working against one another it be an advantage to not to fight. Good show / report thanks.
Strange pronunciation of the word SYRUP. It almost sounds like she's saying SURP. Where I'm from (Connecticut) the word has two distinct syllables, SEAR-UP.
Wisconsin set worldwide cheese prices for decades....they didn't scam the little farms and it worked for everyone as far as I know. Why can't the Canadians do it right for their own syrup producers?
There are many, many untapped sugar bushes here in eastern US. Just need to light a fire under people and they will start producing. More dairy farms go out of business, the more they will be replaced by maple syrup producers. I have seen big growth in my portion of central ny in the last ten years I have patrolled these roads. He may have been boastful but it is a possibility.
i called the police to my house regarding the biggest crime in history where massive investigation happened in my apartment of someone that stole my milk in my fridge.
As a Vermonter, I'm always sad to see the sugar trucks heading north for the Quebec border... the Canadians use our sugar as part of their scheme to control syrup prices and I think thats ultimately a form of monopoly... our syrup producers may enjoy the higher prices they can demand from our puny local stock (sold mostly to tourists because locals tend to have friends with sugarbushes who sell them the best dark amber at fair prices) but then Canada can flood the market any time they want and then what?
Then we don't buy, we control the prices, take a year off and eat something else and see what happens. The people have power if they choose to wield it. There are other types of syrup one can make due with for a year or two, or forever if need be.
The "Federation" is opposed to the free market and uses force to impose its dictates. So, by creating such "laws" there is built-in the attractiveness for crime and the black market. In short, "The Federation" facilitated the criminal activity by fixing the market for syrup. America has made this mistake with alcohol and drugs, prohibiting their uses and in both case they have led to massive crime/robberies/murders. This is not to excuse the maple syrup thieves but their evil was facilitated by "The Federation." Best to let the market decide prices or value of goods and services and the government should not intervene. The competition from the US is of course the punishment for the dictatorial power of "The Federation." The Federation is a form of legalized crime empire and it must be terminated.
I cant think of another single industry where growers are legally forced to supply only one wholsesaler. Essentially its legalised price fixing which in my country is illegal. And then they wonder why theres a huge blackmarket. If i make or grow a product or item i will sell it to whoever i want at whatever price i want.
Why would no one think people would steal maple syrup exspecially if its real canadian maple syrup ? Real canadian maple syrup is way better than any of the fake syrup we get in stores here in the US and its also really exspensive just to get a small bottle of it shipped to the us cause it has to go through the border and therefore goes through customs also
I find it amusing that a huge heist in Canada is maple syrup.
What I can't believe is the amount of maple syrup that they're talking about. Who consume that much of it ?
I'd be looking at the Highway Patrol Officers from Super Troopers.

You can’t understand. This is pure MADNESS. HOW COULD THEY?!
This just improves our reputation on how much we love maple syrup
'It's *just* maple syrup' -- ?! I'll take maple syrup over diamonds any day : )
I bet the thieves have been eating a shit load of pancakes.

There's a black market for maple syrup!!??!! I thought the black market dealt exclusively with molasses.

The fort knox of maple syrup, great canadian story. Sap sucker thieves, price fixing eventually fails.
On a recent episode of "Mom" they went up to Canada to buy black market maple syrup because they could resell it for 10 times the price in the states!
Yessssss!
