I'm a native of NC, and I've resided near both cities. Lia's info is 100% accurate!! I wish colleges would share some of this with students prior to graduating. It's needed. Thanks for the great info!
OMFG!! No matter WHO I watched, I have never seen such a detailed, yet concise and clear report of Chatlotte vs Raleigh. This was News Report status. Excellent.
Also, you are such an intelligent beautiful and personable woman.
I don't think paying rent is money down the drain. Alot comes with owning also. Just do what's best for you
I agree
It is if you want to live in a place for 20 years .
facts!
Yes. I agree. Mortgage means death. Paying money to own a house that a person is renting from the bank.
As a resident of Raleigh this is a pretty good assessment. Raleigh is a cookie cutter town. It’s a standard american town. Go to college, meet someone, get married, buy a house...etc. Night life is trash and not comparable. I find the housing market to be way more expensive in Raleigh than Charlotte. You simply won’t find a townhouse below 170k thats up to par considering maybe 5/6 years ago they were 110k to 150k for the best. Single family homes you won’t find much below $250k. I can see why dating here is better! People get married here because its a family town. There is definitely not much black nightlife. Raleigh is a white town but you have Durham for the more cultured feel. Domestic flights are certainly better in Raleigh. The entire terminal 1 is Southwest and you can basically get a flight anywhere in the country for less than $400. Most places like NYC, Houston, Miami, ATL, have flights at or under $250. Most Carribean flights go through Charlotte. RDU has one of the best airports i have seen as far as upgraded looks (it’s actually a replica of an airport in Europe). I’ve thought about moving to Charlotte because you get more bang for your buck in housing and things to do but Charlotte to me is just out of the way unless you frequent Atlanta. Its too far from I-95 as traveling state to state especially up north is important to me. It’s nothing to get to VA/ SC/ DC / MD from Raleigh. It takes 6 hours to get to Atlanta from Raleigh I’m within 2 hours of NYC in that time. Overall young millennials probably will enjoy Charlotte more if you want nightlife.
Yea im in charlotte but I love Raleigh more and its probably cuz I don't care about nightlife post 20s. Charlotte is definitely getting expensive now with prices on the rise and the high price buildings going up!
@@andreanalife what do you do for fun in Raleigh? I'm not into clubs either. How are the restaurants? What are the people like overall? Easy to approach or standoffish, if you're Black? Have you had experiences where you were blatantly discriminated against?
I’m interested in moving to nc and can’t choose between the two. This is great information!
I've been in North Carolina for years now and have yet to met someone to marry me. It is a cookie cutter town for people who are from North Carolina or white people. I'm just been honest and I'm not being negative. North Carolina is however a beautiful state due to them charging so much for taxes. It is a very expensive place to live.
@@JoiCarlaBodyBar maybe its you lol
Affordable housing also sucks in Raleigh. Raleigh is increasingly shutting down homeless camps in exchange for fancy, overpriced housing developments BUT with virtually NO options for those displaced, unhoused people. I’m so grateful for the social service and nonprofit financial assistance that helped me to avoid eviction when I needed it. I would have really sunk otherwise. Things have changed for me drastically since then. Great video!
I feel the exact same way. I'm an Atlanta native and the market here is crazy because of transplants. Housing prices have jumped up 30% because of it. We are becoming like NY and Cali however jobs here aren't paying salaries comparable to these regions. I have been looking at Charlotte for years. Very good information.
Yes, moved here a couple of years ago and financially things aren’t good. Moving
This was interesting to me. People from the city better know travelling and getting around is hard without a car. A lot of states dont have good public transportation. New York has the best of options but the cost of living is too high. That's why people are leaving. Especially now with the economy. I hear North Carolina is a good place to live. Very good topic.
This is great, as I am a travel nurse and just got a contract in Raleigh. Thanks so much!
how are you liking Raleigh so far? And what hospital is your contract?
Would you recommend your company? How did you like the hospital?
how was it ? did you like raleigh?
Lol your personality is everything! Thank you for the info!👏🏾
Something to note on the corporate side of Raleigh, they are the headquarters for Advance Auto Parts and Clorox has now named Durham its Vitamins Headquarters and Durham is also home to the IQVIA headquarters. Morrisville is home to Lenovo, SAS, Epic games. Google recently named Durham a hub and Apple has done the same to Raleigh which is key. American airlines’ call center is also in Cary with major corporate offices for PNC Bank, Invisalign, IBM and many more
Wow! So much great information!! I thought I was watching an in depth documentary!😁 Thank you for always doing your research and providing unbiased views. Loved it!!👍🏽💕🥰
Tent City brought me to tears when I saw it . I am discouraged with the housing here in Charlotte. I am also disappointed with the housing management that keep up with the property or should , they are really doing a poor and terrible job . Affordable housing isn't affordable in my opinion .
I’ve been living in Raleigh for 15 years and I love it 🤗🤗🤗
Awesome! I love it there too and ready to move back in the fall!
My son is moving to Charlotte from Columbia next month. He found an apartment in Arysley. We visited the neighborhood when I was there this past weekend. He's in walking distance of Tisun. 😁😁 You know I had to stop in there cause of you Lia. Anyway he got a 1 bedroom and the price made me do a double take but like you said, it's Charlotte. I'm already planning my trip to Carowinds this summer.😊😊
I’m in Cary and you are exactly right! I thought moving from NY down here would be cheaper, however to maintain the same type of lifestyle it’s really not. The savings isn’t as much as people think.
What about the quality of life? I am planning to move with my family by June. I was shocked when I visited last year, the house prices have definitely gone up. However, I am still considering because the quality of life and living accommodation etc is not the best on Brooklyn.
@@srsmithali For a family NC will probably be good but as your kids grow older they will probably be bored a lot but very nice colleges here. My dad was in the military and moved us back to the states once he retired in the mid 2000s. I was raised in the suburbs in a very nice quiet neighborhood but living here in NC was really boring compared to the country we came from. I lived in FL for a short period in college for a program then came back to finish my degree and I honestly would rather live in FL. It is safe compared to other states, I couldn't imagine raising a family up north from all the stories my friends have told who are from cities like Baltimore, NYC, Philly, etc. I'm probably leaving NC soon because I'm single with no kids and I mostly feel like I'm surround by family oriented people which isn't bad but I rather spend money elsewhere that fits my current lfestyle.
@@kate.c2759 thank you so much for sharing your perspective. I am taking everything into account. My mom and her husband moved to Raleigh in 2010.My husband and I visited and we tried to move to Charlotte but it did not work out. What amazed me back in then was how when we visited Charlotte their was no one in the streets at 1pm.
Anyways, I forgot about trying to move some I ended up getting a job in NY. However I knew that one I had kids I did not want to raise them in NY.
I have 2 kids now. We have been to Florida and NC it comes down to where I have deeper connections and would have more support with my kids.
The reason I am choosing Raleigh is quality of life vs Brooklyn. Right now it's not safe to be out. I compared Brooklyn to Raleigh, there might be a lot more to do here in NY but neither myself nor my kids have experienced it.
For many years I stayed in BKLYN because I am thinking oh we have this and that, stores open late etc. However, I rarely find value in those things. I also don't get to go out much with the kids because it's just always so rushy here, exhausting and trying to find park whenever you go somewhere is just a nightmare.
I was worried about my children adjusting but my 6 year old can't wait to move. She has more fun going on walks and just being outdoors. She'll get to do waaay more in Raleigh than in Brooklyn.
Also she does activities such as swimming and dance here which cost a lot. At least when I move I save money and gain access to pools by living somewhere that has a lot of amenities.
I figure we can always go to the beach, the mountains etc. My brother and girlfriend lives in Charlotte and they love it, so we can visit there.
I don't need much but I don't like living in NY. I want an easier going life surrounded by serenity, beauty and cleaner air. I know everywhere has its positives and negatives. I look forward to the move as it will change and improve my life as
well as my marriage and the quality of my family life.
We have a boy and girl and we want to buy a house. The house prices here are crazy compared to the value. So Brooklyn leaves me no choice.
@@gaudycompany8745 Do you have any suggestions as far as housing for a single woman no kids? I went to school for fashion merchandise and design but the cost of living & the pandemic scared me away from NYC but my lease is about to end and it's hard finding jobs in my field that are not based in NYC or LA. I'd prefer to live alone but I know for both cities having roommates would be better financially so I'm open to anything at the moment just trying not to remain stagnant.
OMG!! I FINALLY FOUND SOME ONE WHO...AGREES WITH ME!!
Whoo whoot!! Another great video. I will be there next week to start my new job!!

I live in the middle of no where in Georgia and apartments are still 1200 for a 2 bedroom. I would rather pay 1200 to live in a big city instead of paying 1200 to live in the middle of no where.
Same, 1 beds in Detroit are around 1200 for decent quality and safer areas.
I just moved to Fort Mill, and I am struggling to find the young black professionals circles. I’m into anything art (spoken word, museums, etc) I have my Bachelors in Human Resources Management, but I’m currently in Real Estate. Where are we?

3yrs later im still wondering that lol charlotte area just isn't it but I do love the food lol Stats is good and caters to a good crowd. Red at 28th. I would say join a black professional meetup group in the area
Cross into Charlotte. I'm telling you...that's what I had to do
You’ll have to do research because Raleigh is pretty big abs we’re all spread out. Join some black networks on Facebook and look on eventbrite to network !
$1200 for 2 bedrooms is amazing compared to prices in the DMV! You can only get an efficiency basement apartment for that price or room share.
Can’t get nothing for that in L.A. 🤦🏾♀️
Depends, in the suburbs of Baltimore you could get a 2 bedroom town house for that price.
Hi Lia, your hair is gorgeous and so are you! Keep the content coming. Love and light from New York 🙌🏽
This was a great video! I'm in CLT Metro and this is all very accurate.
Moving to Raleigh soon, glad I found this.
Hey how are you liking it so far? I’m considering relocating.
Hey, how are you liking it so far?
Hi Lia, good video. You are on point real estate in Raleigh is on fire. A lot of transplants. Your apartment is nice and the rent is a deal for Charlotte and for Raleigh also. My father in law recently passed but he was paying $1900/month for a one bedroom apartment in the Bronx NY. He lived in that apartment for 20 years. I loved going to college at NC State too but I liked Charlotte and used to want to live there. Raleigh can't touch Charlotte when it comes to night life.
The nightlife has changed a lot, even before the pandemic.

The job that I just landed was HRIS Analyst. My background is IT.
congrats!
Hi. My son is graduating HS soon, and interested in IT. What direction should he go trade school or university?
Good info, Lia! My husband and I are researching places to retire and I came across your video. I had to chuckle when you mentioned, "....make America great....still trying to figure out when it was great". I know that term rubs a lot of Black people, especially young ones, the wrong way. For some of us (Black folks) in our late 60s, when we hear the term "make America great", we might have a different take on that and this is something that I've had to explain to our almost 30 year old daughter. For those of us "60-somethings" who either moved from the Jim Crow south or never experienced it, the phrase for us means how much we'd like to return to a "time" when Blacks had their own corner stores, retail businesses, hotels, neighborhoods that had block parties in the summer, community parades, could walk through our neighborhoods day or night, ALONE, and even leave doors to our homes unlocked! For us, these were, actually "great" times! Now, I realize there was civil unrest going on because of racist practices not just in the South but throughout the country (and I'm certainly thankful that eventually laws were passed to allow for consequences for the mistreatment of anyone based on the color of their skin). But in the opinion of a lot of us, some of that unrest stemmed from being made to believe that we shouldn't have been so comfortable living with those positive amenities and traditions that we, ourselves acquired and we really long for those times. Makes me think of the Winans' song, "Bring Back the days of Yea and Nay". (check it out if you've never heard it.) Everyone's experience was and is different and I jut think it pays to inquire (when possible) and start a dialogue about what that term really means to any person (Black or White) who uses it.
I have grandparents in their 80’s still currently living who have lived in the south all their lives. Trust me, they are trying to figure out the “great” era as well. But like you mentioned everyone’s opinion is going to be different depending on where you grew up and the level of klan activity and racism in your area.
so detailed thank you!!!!
This video was right on time and very informative. Thank you!!!
I've been in RTP for 3yrs and thinking of moving to Charlotte. This was super helpful 💙
I absolutely love this video it’s not many of charlotte UA-camrs ❤️
Thank you. Yes definitely fewer on UA-cam but I’ve definitely seen a lot of folks coming up on Tik Tok.
I live in Minnesota (from New York). A one bedroom apartment starts at $900, depending upon where you live. Student apartments here are INSANE. Students are splitting $1600 or more if they're near campus. So, it's cheaper to buy than to rent. Even with a new fridge and some recent repairs, I'm much better off owning my home. Thank you for this video. I enjoy you giving us a glimpse of your home state.
Technically people never own homes lol..

The same is to said about teachers. All that is needed is checking salary because teaching is a job that will always be in demand. Great video!..
I just heard the part where you addressed teachers. It’s true!.. The salary is what states have to increase. I can say I have 2 Masters and am a NYC native. I easily made $100k in my 1st full year of teaching. When I first started, I was shocked at state and city teaching salary differences.
Wow, I wish teachers here could make that much. Teachers in NC really deserve higher pay.
Excellent video, you did a great job! Not planning to move to either.... but who knows!

Great insight about what Charlotte is about! You are very articulate ❤
Love your videos. One thing when you focused on the mayors there have been quite a few Black mayors in CLT. Harvey B Gantt was the first and we also had Anthony Foxx as well.
I think it's something bigger than just Northerners coming from up top driving up rents. This was good citizen journalism. Well done.
Thanks! for the info I'm considering the move with my family. I'm from Westchester, NY ❤️
As a federal worker, I am surprised that federal salaries are higher in Raleigh than Charlotte.
Because Raleigh is the state capital that's why. Raleigh is where the state government is.
I’m not surprise. Like LeoNation said Raleigh is the state capital. Nearby Durham have a strong health care system with Duke Hospital and the Durham VA Med Center. Raleigh have a strong university system, better job opportunities ( Research Triangle Park, IBM, SAS, Google, Red Hat, Lenovo, and now the Apple Campus). Raleigh Durham is starting to become the Silicon Valley of the south.
Most income competition way more higher paying jobs in the Triangle region.

What are the best affordable places to live in Charlotte in or outside the city ? 🙂🙂🙂

Hi Lia, I from New York, $1,200 for two bedroom is amazing, $2,200 in New York is a studio apartment
Wow 😱
Salary is a lot less. You cant expect to come to NC pay cheap rent and make lots of money. It happens at times for some professionals. But a lot of people get confused with this concept because they think "Oh Wow, cheap rent , let's move!!". My husband is from NYC. He was used to making 22 an hour and paying higher rent. Saw that NC was cheaper, came down here and got into the same career field for $13.75 /hour instead. Lol his mistake...well besides meeting me.

Yeah, Raleigh city buses are not the greatest. You need a car in Raleigh, NC. Raleigh is just not for me. I used to stay in Durham and I loved it. I met a lot of cool people there. It felt like home to me. I actually miss it. Before I left Durham in 2007, some of the apartments were cheaper. I was paying around $725 for a 3 bedroom apartment. I heard things are changing there.
Wow! Surely it can’t be the same now.
I love me some Durham
That apartment has at least doubled in price since 2007.
The same thing is happening with the housing market where I’m at in Idaho from Californians the house prices are 400k now , its driving natives out and now I am looking to relocate to NC or TX even though the same thing seems to be happening there its not as bad.
Hey Chloe, I currently live in Fort Worth, TX. I can say Texas is so huge there are still areas being built up. We have 254 counties! Although, people are moving in from everywhere, to areas where the jobs are like Dallas, Ft Worth, Arlington etc. Homes are being built because there is so much land. Property taxes are high, but Tarrant county (Fort Worth, Arlington, parts of Grand Prairie are cheaper) Texas gets a lot of things right, but a lot wrong, Electricity grid (deregulated energy), price gouging (gas and groceries after winter storm) drainage system after storms, but I've been here almost 5 years and YOU CAN EAT and LIVE in TEXAS. I've thought about leaving because FMLA issues, illegal firing, etc. but GOD turned it around for my good. Basically, protections afforded up North when it comes to business lacks in the South in general, but you can fight back. I hope this helps!

moving here from so cal. thinking of mount holly. its only a 10 minute drive from my job anyways, seems to be the most affordable and modern while still feeling like your in a good area. everywhere else is either a bit out my price range/to close to hoods or the houses are ancient
Mount Holly is pretty nice, I have an apartment over near that area. I actually think the houses are better in this area compared to the apartments. I noticed a lot of people skip over this area and focus more on buying property on the east/south side of CLT, but there are some really nice houses to be found in Mount Holly and it's a short drive to Huntersville which has a few good shopping centers, restaurants, grocery stores.
I am from Cali too. Mount Holly looks like a good option. I need to go to check it out
I came back to Cali. The weather was too humid for me. I work outside and I’m not gonna deal with it 6 months out the year. The air is very thick and muggy there. Wish I would’ve known. Gas is cheaper but things are also further away from each other. If you work inside, you should be alright after a few weeks of acclimating to the weather. Just stay inside with AC on. The air is very clear here in California. It was a relief when I got back
I am a cali baby. I love everything California has to offer. Except the housing prices. It's expensive 😩 I wish the prices would drop.
Hi Lia great video lots of informative information. You mentioned the out skirts of Charlotte . I wanted to know have you visited Gastonia or Davidson if so what are your thoughts as far as housing, employment and night life? Could you let me know what areas your interested in looking to buy your home. Thanks
For me personally Gastonia and Davidson aren’t my cup of tea. Nothing wrong in general just too far from work and the things I enjoy. Housing is probably cheaper in Gastonia but the jobs are in Charlotte in regards to my career field. I’m not familiar with the nightlife in those areas.
Man, it’s funny looking back at this video that was recorded in early 2021. Now in early 2023, you can’t even get a apartment in the Raleigh SUBURBS for under 1200 for a one bedroom. Apartments here in Garner are going for 1400+ for a one bedroom.😂

Girl 1200 for a 2 BR in charlotte is a steal!! My rent is 1400 and I live in North Charlotte in a one bedroom! I work in SC too so I need to get my butt to Ballantyne 🤣 we moved here from Louisiana in 2019 and I'm looking for a house now because rent is ridiculous here now.
Where did you live prior to Charlotte? You mentioned you grew up in a nearby county? Mecklenburg County is actually way different that you described.
union county for the first 18 years of my life
What is Columbia SC like compared to Raleigh?
I wish I knew. Probably been 20 years + since I stopped was in Columbia. I’ve driven through it though
@Bougie Barb oh wow I woulda thought Columbia
No contest, raleigh is superior in every way.
Mri student here, How's the job market for Radiology/MRI in Charlotte?
I’m not sure about the full job market of all the industries here but I would think it would be a good market for radiology
@@LiaLavon oh ok appreciate it. Thanks for responding.
Don't forget Lancaster County we feel the growth. Charlotte been having a black mayor sent Anthony Fox.
This lady can talk!
That's the point of a video communicating information isn't it?
Who would watch a person who isn't talking?
You are one beautiful sista😍😍
I am a nurse and want to move to North Carolina and start dating and making life here. Raleigh is looking better then charlotte for me... Still trying to decide
once i finish my lpn im moving there
Raleigh is boring. Dating sucks!
BEAUTIFUL WOMAN.
The pay suck in NC
Not compared to Florida.
1200 for a two bedroom is a steal!!! This is coming from someone living in Houston lol
If you are truly from NC 1200 is ridiculous lol but times a’ changin’
@@dannywearsthecrown567 oh wow! I was adding the comment for people outside of NC who were commenting about how expensive that was 😅
@@iamkandacemarie I could be dated in my conclusions. I’m 44 so perhaps it’s more so the times than anything?
im payin 9400 for a apartment here in charlotte, its crazy
@@valenjessy87 9400 where?? Wtf 🤦🏻♀️😂
How do you manage hating to drive while working/living in Charlotte?
Always moving closer to my work locations.
@@LiaLavon this is me I need to be as close to my job I hate the expressway I refuse to get on these expressways down here lol
$1200 for a two bedroom in a city like Charlotte is reasonable. I live in RI and you’ll get a rats nest for $1200 here 🤧 two bedroom as well. 😵💫
How's the racism.....they be heritage rallies after church?
You can’t even get a studio in NYC for $1200 if you want to live in a good area.
Raleigh tried to be a little of everything and isn’t particularly great at anything. Everything is just alright. Not awful, but nothing extraordinary. It’s where you move when you’ve got gray hair and you’re waiting to die.
Hey Wolfpack Fam!
I miss Raleigh. Charlotte gives NC State NO LOVE. I miss the college sports atmosphere. But there is still a lot to do in Charlotte. Which do I prefer? I don't know...I waver back & forth. I guess I prefer Charlotte, but I wish Raleigh were closer (I miss my fellow alumni).
10 years removed from college I definitely prefer Charlotte , especially since all my college friends have moved from Raleigh
@@LiaLavon-Gotcha. I get nostalgic, the older I get. My hubs & I are almost 30yrs removed (c/o '94) & my son is graduating in December in Industrial Engineering. Surprisingly, I think he prefers Raleigh to Charlotte...maybe because he is enjoying that "single, but in a relationship" life & his parents might cramp his style! LOL!
Lia you look so gorgeous looking I must say. I want to move to Charlotte. I have visited Charlotte four times already and I have visited Raleigh-Durham area twice. I live in Atlanta. You forgot to speak about the traffic in Charlotte compared to Raleigh. What is the crime in Charlotte compared to Raleigh? Atlanta has a lot of traffic and crime and I'm ready to move.
I wanted to speak on things I actually had knowledge on because I know Charlotte traffic sucks but I’m not as familiar with Raleigh when it comes to rush hour. I worked near campus and never was on the main roads during rush hour time. So my experience in Raleigh was way different than a typical 9-5 driver. I think when it comes to crime too it’s one of those things we’re it’s a metropolitan city so crime is a given. Any city with a million plus county population going to have some crime.
Can you update the info since things have changed?
I don’t know if much has changed honestly since I made this video in 2021. I mean housing prices have still be on the rise but that’s pretty much it
Love your channel if you want a new girlfriend!! Let me know I live in Charlotte!
What about tech industries in Charlotte. Graphic Design
Raleigh would be better when it comes to tech
What about critters.... spiders and snakes... I will be alone and are afraid of both.
I don’t come across snakes 🤣 But it’s definitely possible I guess if you stay outside the city in like the country
@@LiaLavon Thanks!!!!
@Myah Cal Well I was moving to Charlotte but I think it will be Greensboro.
I am actually contemplating this scenario at this time, Summer of 2023…
Hello Lia.
Winner: Raleigh
💯
You completely overlooked Research Triangle Park in your career portions of your comparisons.
The thing about a video where you are trying to condense a bunch of information into one video some stuff is going to be missed and there will be tons of “oh you didn’t talk about this or you missed this part”. Charge it to the head and not the heart. I tried to hit on the fact that a lot of my state friends had great IT position in the 919 area post grad.
