  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy. Most importantly, however, we’re going to be looking at where these two worlds diverge- tackling the question of whether or not Hogwarts Legacy should be considered a genuine part of Harry Potter canon.
    What IS Canon?
But now many of you may be asking yourselves- what exactly is canon? And what prior content that’s been published under the wizarding world label fits this description? In order to set the stage, I feel that this needs to be appropriately defined.

And I like all the series and side quest of each author wanting to put their own twist on it.. I just got to the point, I'll just watch mode, because too many things are left unturned as an OG fan of the series.

Hogwarts Legacy could be canon. Because it explain about ancient magic. The magic that lily used to manipulate voldy magic and make his avada kedavra spell to split his soul to harry.
And also about harry can control stuff in the muggle world. When he inflate that annoying lady. That was indeed ancient magic there. Accidentally activated because harry was angry. Remember, guys lily's power back then WAS NOT "LOVE MAGIC". IT WAS ANCIENT MAGIC. Ancient magic lured by the emotions.
It doesnt make any sense if you think the plot of "love magic" is logic. Lol what era is thjs today? 1500s? XD
Love is just one of emotion/feeling. It should not have any power except for the delusional feeling to that person.
Ancient magic is far more logic answer.

On the point of the Elder Wand "blunder," the character is "living out" a story written by Niamh Fitzgerald, where the character of the story obtains the three relics. Therefore, the player never actually obtains the wand, but simply a representation of the wand.

Especially given we find out about his fascination with Dragons from an early age earlier in the story, on the Rowland Oaks quest, similarly to Voldemort and Snakes.
With all that said, I was a bit disappointed by the final fight. One counterpoint: players are not able to obtain THE Elder Wand, only a wand using Elder Wood; The Elder Wand had a Thestral Hair Core, whereas players in H.L. can only obtain wands with the typical Olivander cores: Unicorn Hair, Dragon Heartstring and Phoenix Feather. While Elder Wood wands were very rare, owing in-part to the dark reputation of The Elder Wand no doubt, it is stated on the official website that other Elder Wood wands are made, and that those who were chosen by wands of Elder would often find connection with those chosen by Rowan Wood wands.
While The Elder Wand is featured in the game, it is only as part of a quest that saw the player go inside an enchantment, living out an interactive test based on The Tale of the Three Brothers, and not, in fact, real events, or memory of events that happened in-game.

Ok, since a lot of people are commenting about this, I’ll attempt to make an explanation that is a bit more comprehensive.
    Spoiler alert!
In the game, at one point, you’re given the task to go to the headmaster office to initiate your next trial.
But unlike the previous ones, this one in particulars requires you to approach the book on the pedestal which is the iconic tale of the three brothers, The Deathly Hallows.
The transition where your character gets pulled into the book is undoubtedly supposed to be a nod to Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.
In that the same thing happens to Harry when reading and communicating with Tom Riddles diary.
Reminder that in both cases at that point, both Harry and your character are seeking knowledge. Your character to gain knowledge from the pensieve memory and Harry to gain knowledge of Aragogs existence.
The one crontradiction in that section is how your character seemingly ends up at the map chamber rather then back in the headmasters office. Harry was simply shot back out into the chair he was previously sitting in.
I would also like to point out the art style during that section resembles the art style of the movie in The Deathly Hallows part 1 during the scene where Hermione is explaining the story.
So in a way, that trial is following a double canon.
Hopefully this helps settle the confusion as in the video, they don’t go into detail about that part and I can see why. As It can be a very crontroversial subject.

I think it's canon for several reasons. We have several ancestral characters that we encounter there. Both main and secondary characters. When it comes the canon of the Harry Potter universe, it comes to one simple aspect; if it is labeled officially as 'Wizarding World'. Everything under that label is now official canon, even if some stories are better than others. The Wizarding World has swiftly grown far past JKR and her writing, and is now a franchise much more in the line of Star Wars. Star Wars was created by George Lucas, and while he penned the scripts to the first six films and directed multiple, he also, even before he sold the rights, had other creators adding to the world and lore of the universe he had created. Hogwarts Legacy falls perfectly into the canon (even if I'm sure there is a true canonical ending, ignoring the other possible choices that players might select while playing, in the way of many games) There will very likely be in the near future a host of other games, films, tv shows and even books made by other creators that all fall within the Wizarding World, and likely nearly all of that will be considered certified canon.

Rookwood fight alone would cement your character as arguably the most powerful magic user of all time. You’re fighting up to 7 dark wizards and a wizard comparable to a high ranking death eater all at one time while summoning insane lightning blasts and spells that turn people into dust. And you do it with relative ease. The finally story fight also sees you being incredibly powerful. Like my dude could look at Dumbledore, Grindlewald, and Voldy and match them all at the same time. The magic dash and ancient magic would definitely be more than a match for those three to take on. I give my wizard 7/10 vs Grindlewald, Dumbledore, and Voldy. I’d even give him even odds vs the original 4 founders. Like chocolate frog/statue having powerful.

Mystery is most definitely not canon. Too much dumb stuff going on like Fenrir Greyback showing up literally right outside the castle to attack a student then getting defeated by an 11 year old. They wouldn’t make one of Voldemorts most feared assets and someone capable of tearing Bill Weasley to absolute ribbons, get canonically dunked on by a kid who knows like 2 spells.
There’s also the simple fact it just contradicts with the history we know. For example in Harry’s first year it’s said slytherin won the house cup the last 8 years, which would crossover with the game, yet you can play as any house and win the cup in those crossover years. Also if you play as a male Gryffindor you can quite literally take Charlie Weasley’s position as both prefect and Gryffindor Seeker, despite him being the eventual team captain and allegedly so good he could’ve played for England lol

@@Pulivari124 I’m not sure you quite understand the canon issue here, not trying to be rude, but the last bit about lighting a game on fire doesn’t really make a lick of sense.
My point is that the game is an rpg, by default RPG’s based off fantasy franchises are typically not canon. Telltale Game of Thrones, the Shadow of War/Mordor games and the Witcher games are all RPG’s based off successful franchises, but none of them are canon due to the presence of choices you can make in game that alter the timeline, or in the shadow of war/mordor case changes the lore of the franchise to better fit their own story.
If the game simply made your character a slytherin then I would say you are right and the game can be canon, but the fact the choice comes down to the player and gives you the ability to alter events voids the canon arguement.
Also no Fenrir has never been portrayed as a joke and I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that it “happens all the time” from. He’s taken very seriously in the books and movies, in fact he’s one of the most outright sinister and disturbing characters in the entire series, not only for his viciousness and his cannibalism, but also that he’s implied to be a child predator.

I am 100% sure JK Rowling had something to do with the plot of HL. She may not have been the main writer, but something tells me she read the entire plot for her approval before release. JK Rowling is very careful and meticulous with her wizarding world. She's not just gonna hand it over to some random people and let them call the shots.
EDIT and SPOILERS: Also, you don't get the elder wand. You're just in a subconcious memory where you get to use it (where they did not even call it "elder wand"). You won't be able to keep it.

They did call it the Elder Wand. They mentioned each Hallow by name. The entire story was about the Deathly Hallows. You, in fact, replayed a story about cheating Death. Each Hallow had it's own act. While you only experienced a memory of the Hallows, it doesn't make it any more or less relevant.

Whether the events of the game are canonical are not, i feel is wholly irrelevant. What should matter most is the extensive amount of world lore that is given within the game. We learn so much more about Hogwarts and the surrounding area! Let alone the magic and creatures of the universe! What I think matters the most is taking these hard facts into account when discussing the canonical universe. As an example: You have a video about Secret Passageways and Rooms in Hogwarts and never once mentioned the Undercroft or the Map Key room!

To clarify that first statement: the story and characters that happen and appear make no true difference to canon given the era the game is set. It could have been any magical story with any relatable cast of characters. The most canon portion of the game is the setting and the gratuitous amounts of world lore we gained from it.

Let me say first, HPT, that I am pleased I subscribe to your channel - your detailed and well-thought-out presentations are always a pleasure to review!
I am truly impressed by your definition of canonicity! Your definition could be easily applied to any other franchise - Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Narnia, to name a few. The Potter franchise is lucky to have its creator still living; Narnia and Middle-Earth do not enjoy that...
The only minor quibble I have with the presentation is substituting "Warner Brothers" with "Warner Bros" - it's a little jarring, but doesn't detract from the rest of the presentation (and yes, I recognize it's the speech AI you're using).
I look forward to not only your next video installment, but also to hopefully joining you and others in their journeys in the Wizarding World!

Hard canon is the OG books, cursed child, and fantastic beasts. Extended canon is Everything outside hard canon that JK says is canon, soft canon is the extra media that is more maliable and is subject to being overwritten in the future. The line between extended canon and soft canon is sometimes blurry.
Just know that so long as it doesn't conflict with Hard Canon it should be treated as a temporary treat. 20 years from now there will be a different game that completely negates the concept of Ancient Magic and changes the story of the Goblin Rebellions. So long nothing as about it mishandles OG Hard canon then you can't say it's wrong.
Starwars had 3-5 different and conflicting soft canon explanations on Anakin Skywalker and the Clone Wars until Episode 2 came around and invalidated them all with new Hard Canon. It happens.

The tale of the three brothers are interpreted by the Headmistress Fitzgerald as three brothers who found powerful artifacts and used it against the army of Death, which might means powerful adversaries in their time. They were not given directly by Death. It was Death that compelled them to find it. Its the same core of fighting against Death, but this one is more scenematic.
They are not real, we just play through a storybook written by the former headmistress.

I think the major problem for canonicity is the “main character” issue. Some event do change based on your sorting, some choice you make, and the ending too.
Until an official version of what happened is penned down, it would be hard to 100% canonize the events of the game…even if there is actually no problem that you described, as that doesn’t ‘really’ happen.

There are so many details that are canon that overall it should be considered canon imo... In 1981, Lily Potter sacrificed her life to save her son, Harry, from being murdered by Lord Voldemort. The subsequent sacrificial protection put on Harry, shielding him from harm, was a form of ancient magic. So we already know ancient magic is canon!
I also very enjoyed that they included the magic school of Uagadou which is canon since like 2017 if I am correct. There are also so many more details.... wonderful game, good Story, best attention to detail I have ever seen. For me it will always be canon!

Imo it's a lower tier canon, so it's up to a person's interpretation.
The HL castle has a similar layout like movies, and book castle is way different. But looks/art aside, the storyline could be "lower tier canon".

1 Not all owners of the elder wand were known at all. 2 You don't actually acquire the wand and only see an illusion/memory of it. 3 That fact also means that even the person who made that illusion/memory didn't need to be an owner of the wand in the first place.

I would say that this is cannon, from playing through it multiple times, I've only come across one instance where it could be considered breaking cannon. Recently while running past the library I heard one of the students say that none of Professor Blacks kids are old enough to be going to Hogwarts, if this is true then it's a small break in canon. According to the developers the game takes place sometime in the 1890's. This timeframe causes a problem with that statement because Professor Blacks eldest son Sirius Black II would have become a 1st year in 1888. If they made it late enough that Sirius had graduated, then we would have to move onto the question of why didn't they do cameo's for Dumbledore and Grindelwald who became 1st years in 1893.

I think the 2 only non-canon arguments which contradicts the book series would be 1. As a such powerful wizard/witch as the MC who saved the school, he/she does not mentioned in the main story line. One opposite example is the dragonborn we played in Skyrim, which thu'um power is mentioned as early as in Morrowind (can be earlier,I did not play TES games between Arena and Morrowind), and the dragon-blood heroes (Not called Dragonborn yet) is mentioned in the very beginning. 2. The entrance of the chamber of secret is different, in the main story, the entrance its on the second floor but in Hogwarts legacy its in the basement.
