I absolutely adore this track. This should have been released! I think the lyrics are so inspirational and I really feel what she is saying when i listen to it. So powerful, makes me emotional +
it's clearly autobiographical, as the verse "and you need some food" : when you think about her early years in New York living in misery and poverty but still working hard to make her dream comes true
Of all the "Gotham Sound' demos this song--an interesting meld of pop, rock, dance and new wave--is the one that seems most consistent with the songs from the eventual eponymous debut album. A very winning track. And the lyric, with it's self-preservation ethic, is "very Madonna." She's always about empowerment. What a delight to find this here. UA-cam really is changing the way we live!
A lifelong Madge fan here, decided to dive into her unreleased material for the first time, and this one here is so bloody good! Her vocals sound great!
She's Madonna and done EVERYTHING by herself, including gathering the best producers and writing or co-writing 90% her own songs and from NOTHING to a billion dollar girl, like the so called american dream goes
This is the most bizarre comment. Madonna has done NOTHING by herself which is normal in the music industry. Success relies on collaboration. You said she gathered the best producers and co-writers which contradicts what you said about her doing everything on her own! If she sat on a desert island by herself she would have about 5% of her success as she's only written a few songs by herself. She has also freely admitted to having s ex with many men to push her career forward - DJs, producers etc. We have a name for women like that...
I was born the same year she recorded this? So, let me get this straight, she has been kicking music's ass for over 30 years? Damn, Madonna is awesome!
A letra dessa música é simples e profunda, característica que Madonna conservou ao longo de todos esses anos nas suas letras. Impressionante como ela consegue expressar emoções em letras tão diretas
Even her Demo's were on fire! Quintessential 80s,very Chrissy Hyde,Blondie. You can hear Betty Davis Eyes at the end! Love..Love this ..slays big time!
Whats amazing, If you listen closely around 4:15 mark, she starts to rap. Debbie Harry meets Grandmaster flash, I mean, it was 1981 after all. This song is a testament to her true artistic roots = 1980's Underground NYC art culture. The girl who made something out of nothing, and now rules the world. Camille Barbone, eat your heart out.
I haven't heard these songs until now. they are amazing especially this one and High Society. So fresh, so modern. I am amazed at how she decided that she wants something different than this, she is so intuitive and smart.
My feed is sending me q a few of these. I have to say that they're brilliant. I knew Madonna had a punky beginning, but I wasn't aware there was so much good stuff like this! Thank you for posting. 🎶🌟👍
Because it hasn’t the hit potential that other songs have. If you listen to her first album carefully, the songs included there have the remained disco/soul/funk vibe in fashion back in 1983. So this song, although it is a great one, doesn’t fit. However you can hear somewhere a snippet of the guitar riff from “Everybody”.
Bursting with such rawness, emotion and longing. One of my most loved Madonna pieces. The real street life and struggle Madonna lived when she moved to new York is expressed with such realness in her vocals on Get Up, just beautiful xoxoxoxoxo
Honestly, it sounds like new wave. She had two songs on her first album that sounded very new wave and also on Like a Virgin, she had that punk aesthetic on more than half of the album.
Lyrics: Get out of bed And you look in the mirror And the hate in your head, doesn’t get any clearer The boss man said, “Your gonna lose your job” “Your Gonna lose your pay” If Your Late, Late And the weather man says, “It’s gonna be sunny” And it starts to rain and you don’t think it’s funny So you visit your friends But there’s no one home And you don’t have a dime and can’t even call her on the phone So Get up Get up
Today girls have NO grass roots connection to music, real culture or the heritage with which Madonna was born into. Madonna has a deeper understanding of art, the underground clubs of New York and gay bars of Detroit. Her in crowd reads like a bible of culture; Fab 5 Five Freddy, Warhol, Basquait, Harring, Grace Jones, Nile Rogers. These kids, they just play dress up!
Es que Madonna es una bailarina que canta siempre hizo pop pensando en punk y rock es la diferencia!! Es una ARTISTA!! LA ULTIMA QUE QUEDA, LA ORIGINAL!!
She really belted her heart out on her early tracks. The song is very biographical. She went through some hard times during her early days in NYC. It explains her drive, passion, and hunger...
Sigh... Another early Madonna demo from 1981 that just RUINS ME sooo much. In my opinion THE most emotional and heartfelt lyrics and vocals Madonna has EVER put down *+* So inspiring beyond belief ... 'Get out of bed and you look in the mirror and the hate in your head doesn't get any clearer'... 'Your stomach's so empty and you need some food so you distract yourself but it just doesn't do any good'... Sigh...
To be perfectly HONEST, the demo tape Madonna did with Steve Bray that featured Everybody, Ain't No Big Deal, Stay and Don't You Know (as featured in Pre-Madonna) was MILES ahead of the songs she did with Gotham. The fact that anybody paid attention to this was because it was recorded by Madonna AFTER the fact.
That all the silly things That used to get you down Were just a test to see if you could get up [Chorus] So get up Get up Get up Get up Get up Get up Get up Pick yourself off the ground No one can push you around You get up, up Pick up yourself up off the ground No one can push you around You get up, up So get up (Self up, of the ground) Get up (Self up, of the ground) Get up (Self up, of the ground) Get up Get up (Self up, of the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up (Self up, off the ground) Get up [Outro] (Self up, off the ground) (Self up, off the ground) (Self up, off the ground) (Self up, off the ground) (Self up, off the ground) Get up
Imagine Madonna debuted in 1980, going from last disco era 1979, to a new genre sound in 1980 (punk rock). I think "Get Up" would've been the single to her debut of her career and then her second in 1983 "Madonna Album".
This is probably her best un-released demo. I've been listening to her early stuff for the last 6 months. She's no Ann Wilson or Janis Joplin, but she definitely has an incredible under-rated voice. I think if she had done more rock instead of dance, she may get more credit. The bottom line is in my opinion, her un-released demos rate higher than some other careers from that era...(PA, JJ, CL for example).
they certainly don't make tracks this long of a duration anymore! I've been a Madonna fan since the age of 3years old, honestly thought I had all the raw songs that didn't get released, thought I heard them all! Never even knew this song existed. How can I buy this on cassette / record to add to my now incomplete collection! If only we had UA-cam back in the day.

If you mean in terms of when they were recorded, I believe the Pre-Madonna Stephen Bray demos were recorded over a period of time that probably started a little bit before she started working with Camille Barbone (her manager) and that probably continued simultaneously as she worked on her song's demos (of which "Get Up" was one) for Camille's company Gotham. Even though Camille had wanted M as a solo act only (which resulted in the dissolution of the band Emmy), Madonna still maintained a close relationship with the drummer of Emmy - Stephen Bray - and even eventually got him a job as the drummer in her Gotham backing band. Apparently, they would work on those other more dance-oriented songs (found on the album Pre-Madonna) at night for fun to try to do something different and it just evolved from there...
Even though this is an unofficial released record from 43 years ago, I’m in love with this song and its lyrics. #Madonna should remaster this song and officially release it.
honestly, I find this song lovely, interesting and promising. Her voice is pretty good, but of course, it sounds like many of the early 8Oies stars. I don't understand why it wasn't released as a debut production - but I'm not a professional - in the music industry, at least!

that's the sounds of the 80's alright and also the beginning of great things that no longer exists?, all does demos she should work and bring in a new record 🙌🙌🙌
Her voice in the early 80's was totally awesome!!
I loved her punk rock self!

There’s no one like her. Even in the demos that fire is there.

Her first album is still a little similar to these early songs.
that old madonna , from just a small singer to the queen of pop for 3 decades now . woooow

Love this!!
Madonna's voice "Get me Up" always
This has a Blondie-feel. I love Madonna she's great
Chic's Nile Rodgers helped out with producing "Like A Virgin" along with several Chic members (like the late Bernard Edwards)..

And you can't even call them on the phone
So get up
Get up
(repeat 6 times)
Your stomach so empty
And you need some food
So you distract yourself
But it just dosn't do any good
You think about going home
But it can't be the same
Cause they'll never change
And they don't wanna know
About the sin of you
And the wasting of time
They wanna grab your hair
And pull you in line
So get up
Get up
(repeat 6 times)
Pick yourself up off the ground
No one can push you around
Don't let it get you down
You get up
(repeat 4 times)
So get up
Another day goes by
And you look in the mirror
And the haze in your head
Gets a little bit clearer
And you realize
That all the silly things
That used to get you down
We're just a test to see
If you could get up
So get up
Get up
(repeat 6 times)
Pick yourself off the ground
No one can push you around
You get up
(repeat 2 times)
Get up
(repeat 14 times)
Whats that you say baby?
Get yourself up off the ground

If you mean in terms of when they were recorded, I believe the Pre-Madonna Stephen Bray demos were recorded over a period of time that probably started a little bit before she started working with Camille Barbone (her manager) and that probably continued simultaneously as she worked on her song's demos (of which "Get Up" was one) for Camille's company Gotham.
