How to diagnose and fix A refrigerator compressor and start relay. I will show you in detail how to change the Start relay on this 20 year old Sears Kenmore/ Whirlpool refrigerator and potentially save thousands of dollars instead of buying a new refrigerator.
Most new refrigerators have circuit boards and tend to go bad in a short period of time so I preferred to just keep fixing this old Whirlpool refrigerator untill I can no longer fix it cheaply!

This is the best descriptive and diagnostic video I've seen. There are plenty of clips that suggest the most likely problem is the main control board, and when they install a replacement, there is life on the front panel. So, I went ahead and replaced the control board, which didn't resolve my problem, although it was a breaker on the control board that clicked on and off. Your diagnostics, including checking the amperage draw of the compressor is greatly appreciated. If I could ask UA-cam to pay you twice, I'd gladly do so. Cheers.

Our 11 year old fridge quit getting cold. I thought it had something to do with defrost. Whirlpool told me that the defrost timer needed replaced. I went on youtube to see how to change timer. I came across this video. When you put the microphone so we could hear the clicking. It was the same thing mine was doing. I ordered the part from the place I bought the fridge from because I didn't see the link you posted. They ordered whirlpool part which was a lot more than the one you used but way cheaper than buying a new fridge. I got it today. My husband switched out the part. Guess what? Fridge is getting cold! I am happy I found your video. You saved us a LOT of money. Thank you.

Hey there, I just subscribed because I bought a Lectric bike. I also have years of experience in refrigeration. Kinda cool to see you offering this tutorial. LRA is locked rotor amps. You will be pulling these high amp readings if your compressor is seized up. Thanks!
Thanks for including the current meter in your video, I am diagnosing our fridge with identical symptoms now and using a similar meter but had nothing to compare it to, until I found your video. My relay is also turning off within 5 seconds and I am seeing a high current (~12A). Hopefully a new relay will resolve it as well love our 23 year old Amana stainless refrigerator!

@@Leiomanoa it did not. At over 20 years old I am petty sure the compressor finally gave out. I got several quotes to repair and they were all over $1000 so we scrapped the fridge.

A good relay should be an NC (normal closed) relay. Your bad relay is opened as a bad relay. The compressor winding test should use an Ohm resistance test instead of a continuity test for shorted winding. This is a good and helpful video better than a lot of refrigerator repair videos.

Ohm resistance quantitatively shows continuity resistance, so anything below 1000 ohms is a Closed circuit :)

@@JeremiahMcintosh We watched your video a couple of days during the wait for the technician to come. He told us the compressor was working when he first walked in, hearing the clicks. Then he did exactly the same things you showed at the beginning of your video. Afterwards he looked things up in his computer. In the end he told us the compressor broke, too old to get the replacement… We spent a whole morning looking for a new fridge but nothing good coming up in our price range or size range… we got a little discouraged and thought we may just give it a try following your instructions. Now we seem to have brought life back to our fridge. Thank you so much! We really appreciate it!

At 6:44, you tested the old “relay” and had no continuity (therefore an open).. which of the two holes should be tested: the bottom two holes? My “relay” has three holes for the three pins on compressor. If you have continuity on the bottom two, what should the top with the bottom holes be (open or closed)?

I see new, traditional style Whirlpool, GE, etc. refrigerators with the freezer on top at the appliance stores. Do you think these are just as reliable as the older ones?

Thank you so much! I have a Gorenje K8900 combi fridge-freezer. I took the relay off and it looked and sounded OK with shaking. I replaced the mains plug first and now the fridge works. This is strange because in Germany the plugs do not have a fuse, but maybe something inside was broken.

Interesting video! have a question for you: I have a new 5 cu. ft chest freezer that will go down to about -1ºF at the lowest setting, ambient room temp is 70ºF, about 6” from back wall open space on other 3 sides. The compressor is 1.1 amps. I would like to buy another chest freezer that will go to -10ºF or lower. Would a 2.5 amp compressor do the job?
My Lg French door is not cooling . I check dirt at the back , fan is working , compressor is humming vibrate and warm , even I unplug defrost for 3 hour and plugged it back it seem running but no cold air either at freezer or fridge . I noticedoutside of the fridge not warm while it runing . Do you think what is the issue

My compressor is rated for 11.7 amps. I’m only getting 2.7 amps when I connect the refrigerator.
Please help me if you can..I did all the test i can find here and google i did not have continuity between all the 3 pins only 2 of the pins gave me a jumping 9-10 ohm also. Also compressor gets pretty hot but can keep my hand on it. tested continuity on relay that seem good on the 2 prongs there. I get no blowing on inside fans only in a test mode then stops after 3 mins, the cooling condenser fan runs. My guess its the LG compressor for sure what could else be the issue why it just doesn't just blow air inside fridge only in test mode does a good compressor when it runs triggers inside fans?

You are the man.....good stuff....watch you for my Lectric 2.0.....now I'm shopping fridges....not fun....your right about new stuff....too much going on....what do you feel about what went on with LG linear compressors....do you know if they have fixed the problem....2023.....and what new fridge would you buy ??????....I'm limited to a 30 inch wide....so usually in the 18 to 20 cubic ft. models.
I was considering a new fridge last year but changed my mind and decided to fix mine again. This time it was the door shims.
After doing a bunch of research and talking to people in my opinion, I would stay away from Samsung and any refrigerator that has the ice maker in the refrigerator part. Not sure if LG fixed their problem but I would probably try to buy a whirl pool.

2) can I use different brand of compressor, irrespective of the size?
(E.g can I use danfoss compressor for LG fridge)?
Just fixed my fridge. The evaporator fan wasn't working. Order new one on Amazon. Back up and running fine now!

Thanks for this. I replaced the thermostat on a used but fairly new freezer and it still would run for only about a minute and stop. During that minute, it did cool the interior and the bottom half of the freezer walls got very cold, but the inside would never go below about 32 degrees. I bypassed the thermostat and it did the same thing. Since this relay is the only other part I can replace (the relay and overload are both one part on my unit), if this doesn't fix it, the whole thing goes to the landfill. Luckily, I paid nothing for it except the $20 thermostat and $8 relay. Fingers crossed!
Hope it works out for you. If it’s a newer freezer and it has a circuitboard it could be that as well.

I want to install a new start relay and overload switches but I did not take a pic of the orientation it originally was plugged onto the compressor.
In your shot of the 3 comp. pins yours are 2 at the top and one on the bottom. Mine has one on top and 2 on the bottom.???
On the black cover it has "C"on top and "S" left bottom and "R" the right bottom does that mean anything.
I don't want to the new parts on only to blow up the compressor. Does anyone have any ideas why my pins are different?

Hello I bought one use fridge to repair in the back the Cooper pipe close to compressor it's broken,what I can do to repair the fridge ? the last orner he checket with the technician and he cut the cooper pipe in the back ,after the orner decide to sell the fridge

you would need a oxy/acetylene torch to properly braze the lines, but you can get away with silver solder and a mapp gas torch in some cases. Worth a shot.

It could be many different things it could be a bad start capacitor like in this video a bad compressor or low on Freon but If it’s a newer fridge it could be a bad circuit board.

This is an old post, but did you find out the problem? I changed out the switch and it worked for a few days. I bought another switch and nothing.
Arrgh... The prongs are numbered. The white wires are going to the bottom, on the 2 prong side, but on mine they are ganged but I have them going to the top prong. Is that a problem (anyone?) ? My compressor gets super hot ... my freezer evaporator coils are very dry, no frost patina at all. All fans work, fridge gets cold but will get too warm before it kicks on again.

Look at the model. It should have the part info on the relay itself. Or look up the model of fridge and search parts.

Hi, will be much apapsreciated if somebody can give an idea. if fridge swithc of from the socket and plug back in in couple of minutes, the fan is start spinning for 2 seconds and stops.
No light in a fridge, but power exist as all cables cheched with multimeter and obviously fan is spinning for 2 seconds if I plug fridge back on.

A few weeks ago, I noticed it had defrosted. There was no sound of the compressor running. I looked this problem up and a number of results suggested replacing the start relay and / or overload.
I ordered replacement parts, and they have now arrived, however I have misplaced the photograph I took of the original wiring.
The start relay is a 3 pin relay
Could someone please advise on how this should be wired?
The brown and blue pair of wires both came from what looks like a capacitor box. The blue and white wires appear to come from what I believe to be a thermostat box, which is then connected to the mains.
It's very important to keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. If the temperatures aren't kept at the proper settings the more chance Listeria, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, can grow, especially if the refrigerator temperature is above the safe temperature. Thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.
I don’t hear the clicking. Compressor is warm, condensing fan working. Should I assume it’s the relay? It’s definitely not kicking on.

Excellent video. Job done well. I do not know work with electricity and compressor. I have Kenmore Elite model 795.75043.610. Universal part-compressor: TCA 38131706. I found out that cooling fen is working. Don't fill any heat on compressor by touching. On left side I feel some click what is repeating. I have sent email to Jeremiah Mcintosh but no answer. His video is from 2019, it is not new from may 2022. My be it is the reason why I don't get answer? Does anybody knows what is next step?
