Awesome stuff. This might be the most detailed color grading tutorial on final cut. Thanks for looking out for us FCPX folks. Usually something like this is always for Premier lol.
This is by far the best Final Cut Pro Color Grading tutorial I've ever seen! I've watch at least 10 or 15 and they were informative, but always pushed luts and never explained beyond the basic color adjustments. I finally understand how to manipulate the color to the specificity I need. I had no idea how to use the curves and hue/sat areas, which is exactly what I was missing. I just started using HLG2 on my Sony A6400 and wanted to know how to make the grading adjustments myself to a precise degree. Thank you so much, Jay
@@TaylorMoore4K My pleasure and seriously, I know how to manipulate raw files in Lightroom and Photoshop using all the adjustment options in detail. What was recently bothering me about Final Cut was lack of sliders and adjustments like in Lightroom for example. The Hue Sat area in particular and all the other options that make it so easy. The missing pieces on how to adjust the colors with precision and everything else has been cleared up. So many times I wanted to make adjustments to certain hues and had no idea how to do it. Thanks again!
As a brand new user to FCPx and an iMac ..(27 yrs on Windows)..This is the best color grading tutorial I have seen..I have watched well over 15 other videos and picked up some good info from those... But yours my friend, is the BEST, in my humble opinion. A great help, very thorough and informative. You are a great teacher. Kudos to you!! Keep up the good work. Thank You, Thank You!!! I'm subscribed and look forward to more amazing tutorials from you. Have a great day!!!
To answer a very common question; the numbers that I type in were all found through trial and error before making the video. I spent the time just dragging sliders to positions I felt looked great and then just typed them in to simplify and shorten the length of the video.
Holly Molly... WOW! That is Soooo very well explained! I've learned more in this video about color (corrections, grading and so on) than in the past 5 years. Thanks!!!
This was so helpful man - thank you! I searched around for a bit on other tutorials and this was the most helpful! I was doubtful FCP X could do everything that Adobe Premiere could, but it can!! Hue/saturation curves FTW!!
Thank you so much for this really really informative color grading tips. Probably the most helpful color grading tutorial of the FCPX that I've encountered on UA-cam!
Excellent thanks. I only really use the color board but I'll try to get a bit more advanced. My problem is just trying to remember what everything does. I can often see skin looking to red for instance but don't know how to make it look.more salmon coloured.
Pretty crazy what you can do with stock footage when you have unlimited access to it, right?! Definitely worth trying Storyblocks... it's quickly becoming a tool in my filmmaking arsenal for my commercial work! LINK IS IN MY DESCRIPTION!
@@TaylorMoore4K For sure. I am still trying to find one to teach me how to get to the "base" levels of saturation and color. Any tips? I want to do the two step process as I am supposed to, but while I can gauge exposure with the wave forms, I'm not 100% sure what I am looking for color-wise.
LUTs get a lot of hate, but can be incredibly useful tools. For example, the (free) LUTs that FCPX includes to transform log footage to Rec 709 are a lifesaver, because they save so much time. I like to use those, then start my grade from there!
Must have missed something simple... made my color corrections to the first - part - of my clip and Saved as a Preset, but it did not apply it to the whole clip ??? Even when I tried to re-apply is as that Saved preset... only the first few frames where my playhead was sitting???
John, I called out those numbers just as numbers that I personally landed on in my experimentation! When I pulled them towards blue or towards red, I fine tuned them with the sliders until I found a color I liked. The numbers I shared are just those numbers!
@@TaylorMoore4K as a struggling amateur editor with about three to four years under my belt, Color Grading and consistency are my downfall (actually I have two or three more downfalls but we're talking about color here). I gather that it is the downfall of lots of us. I am spending a lot of time, going step by step to follow your directions but you lose me when you grade by typing in numbers. You seem to know exactly what numbers to insert. So if you landed on a certain color that you like while experimenting with the sliders, do you then jot it down and then move off that mark? If you find something you like, why move on and then type in the numbers later? I know I am missing something here.
Dennis Lee I apologize for not calling that out in the video! That’s exactly what I did. Before making the video, I went through and determined all of values that I liked simply by manually dragging them to what I believed looked good! If I did that piece live, this video would’ve been over an hour long hahah that said, I should’ve called that out in the video. Sorry about that!
Dude this was an awesome video, you earned a sub. Is there anything wrong with color correcting in proxy? Im editing a 4K Ireland trip and the playback on 4K is god awful. Would love your thoughts on how to navigate this. Thanks!
I have been trying to improve my colour grading for a while now. I watched this throughout and have to say, as much as I loved it, you lost me when you started talking and using the numbers. There was a lot to take in the video. Clearly, I have much learning to do before I start ditching the LUTs but am hungry to learn more. Great video and one of the best, if not the best, I have seen that explains the purely raw considerations regarding grading footage. Thank you.
Thanks for this informative video. It was really helpful. Hopefully i can apply these techniques to my edit. Even though it does seem like a complex task.
Very, very good. I just wish my aged, addled brain could keep up with half of what you were doing!! I think I will need to watch this over and over again to get it to sink in!!
great video bro, the only problem is the fact is hard to noobs like me to understand how you achieved the values you added into the colors tools. if you don't bother, it could be a new video to you, explaining it into details.

Right?! I figured it was time Finale Cut got some real attention!! Haha thanks for the compliment too :)

Taylor Moore Say “Saturation” just one more time, just for me 😘 This video is amazing. I’m going to watch it a hundred times 🙏🙌🔥

The beginning had me hooked and was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you
i just have the simple color board appearing for me... why?
How do you pick which clip is going to be your base clip?
Very helpful! Thank you!! I'll definitely be revisiting this video as I work on mastering color grading.
Thanks so much for watching! :)

Dude I’m so happy it was helpful!!
Loved the video! It was super helpful. Thank you
Just brilliant! You did lose me with the number values though. Great video, it’s like a quick course and gave me some new perspectives
by far the best explanation ive seen
Dang man thank you so much!
Very true. No idea which camera used and exposure 🤔
The idea isn’t to copy the settings lol the idea is to show you a process that you can imitate to gain similar results!
Awesome tutorial. Thanks 👍🏻
Best Color grading tutorial I've seen... Great job! Thanks
This is by far the best color grading video I have ever seen!! thank you so much, you got a sub
BRAVO - i learnt a lot! A question please - From 2:56 have you used the mTitle Kinetic from motionVFX? It looks amazing.
Yeah exactly!
this was informative af ! thank you :)
Wow thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching as well :) fun to get a compliment from a channel of your size!
Thanks a ton, Taylor. Definitely one of the most comprehensive tutorial on FCP X color grading!
where does the parameter numbers come from? They look so fine

Hi, thanks for the video.
Should I use monitor calibration before doing color grading?
Thank you

This is my fifth color grading video in a row and the only one that really taught me. Thank you!

Can you find flat profile footage on storyblocks to practice?
Well done sir well done. You’re not afraid of those curves like most people
Great video as usual Taylor! Would love some more iPhone photography/videography/editing tips!
I don't have that Colour Panel Option, I only have the colour board. Can u suggest me something? 🙁

Ben my man!! Thanks so much dude!
On my version of final cut all I have is the color board. Idk if I can grade with that what shud I do
Very comprehensive explanation. Thank you.

when you used color board you mentioned number that representa colors.
Do you know where to find these guidelines?

Nope! I grade on proxy many times. The colors should hold true. Just make sure you switch it back to full res prior to exporting ;)
Thank you as well for your kind words :)

Great video! Helped a lot!
I followed all your step, but still my video is over saturated as always. And I really want Orange skin tone like you do. Sadly, I can't do.
Can you bring down the saturation in either the midtones or the oranges? That should help even out the skin tones!
super helpful man, thanks
