    I just wanted to tell you that I listen to your videos while I sew and I have learned so many new techniques from your videos. You inspire me to be a better seamstress. I have recently borrowed an adjustable dress form from a friend who doesn't use it and have since made a chemise, crotchless bloomers, a corset, a blazer, and a skirt. I wear plain dresses almost everyday and you have inspired me to branch out. I am currently putting button holes in my blazer for an 1860's reenactment on Sep. 10. I would love to see a spotlight of all your costumes of the 1860's. Also I make all of my dresses and costumes out of sheets and tablecloths and such. My family runs a Quarter Store here in Indiana. Everything is a quarter except furniture, appliances, and formal wear. So the bedding, fabric, clothes, and almost every other material thing is a quarter a piece. Thank you for being who you are!

    You are exceptionally talented. Here in the UK I run a drama group for underprivileged kids, we are always struggling for costumes and I wish we had someone with your talents working with us! Have you looked around for theatre groups in your area that would appreciate your costumes donated? In your other video you mentioned you throw them away and that just seems so sad. I would take your arm off for the costumes you make lol. If you're throwing them away in the future I will pay the shipping to take them off your hands ;) You should have so much more faith in your abilities because you truly are very creative and super talented at what you do xxx

    Angela, here on UA-cam there is a historical costumer called prior attire. Her peices are very historically correct down to foundation garments. You might find a great deal of inspiration there.

    Very informative video! I looked up 17th century hungarian gowns and you were right, they really are unique and pretty. For the longest time I was under the impression that during those days (1600-1800's) the same style of clothing was worn all around Europe, like the types of historical clothes that you make but I guess those are more of a british fashion?

    AAAHHH when you said the 1830s was your favourite period to make costumes from, I got so excited because I'm writing a book that's set in 1830s England, and I'm also an artist and like to draw my characters a lot, so I spend a lot of time on pinterest looking up 1830s fashion hahaha! Your costumes are gorgeous, I've often looked up your portfolio for inspiration and references! (':

    Do you usually design your own original historical garments or do you prefer to find a picture or a painting that you like and sew accordingly? You're the one that inspired me to really push myself and start making costumes ❤️ up until 6 months ago it was always something i would dream about doing one day but you really helped make it a reality! I would definitely say though that my favourite period as far as historical costumes go changes according to which book i'm currently reading 😂👒

    That's so funny that you mentioned Gabriella Pescucci and Sandy Powell because the first thing I ever designed and drafted the pattern for was a Victorian or really more 1880s ivory engagement gown with a bodice inspired by the vest bottom, covered buttons, and JUST off the shoulder, lace embellished, wide v neckline of May's Engagement gown bodice (which I later found out while doing some internet research on Borgias costumes was designed by Gabriella Pescucci) that Winona Ryder wears in "the age of innocence (although I added a back peplum to the bodice with a beaded butterfly that draped over the ver top of the bustle, which was inspired by one I saw on Claudia in "Interview With the Vampire", a gold ball gown she's wearing designed by Sandy Powell) and the skirt of the dress was inspired by Sandy Powell's midnight blue Claudia gown from "Interview with the Vampire" with the long ruched train and the draping in the middle of the front of the underskirt. The bodice and covered buttons were covered in an outer layer of ivory satin after a muslin underlining (with a piece of cotton sewn to the underside for boning channels and breast support) and lined with ivory silk. The skirt had a train made of the same satin (it was easier to gather/ruche) but the underskirt was made of taffeta in the exact same shade with 3 inch pleats used at the front bottom just to the floor line and lots of pearl and gold beading where the pleats met the body of the skirt!

    A suggestion for sleeve making. Make an arm for your dress form by making a sleeve and stuff it tightly with quilt batting. Then you sew the top and bottom holes closed with circles of fabric then add an extention to the sleeve cap so you can pin it to my dress form.

    Angela, I don't know if you'll read this, but I have a question for you. Have you considered making clothes for other people? I don't mean for the purpose of selling them, but for the purpose of adding variety to your portfolio. Costume designers do make costumes for people of all shapes and sizes. ;) Anyway, I've enjoyed watching your videos. Good luck, and I hope that you continue to have fun.

    A question, have you thought of doing historically accurate Disney Princess costumes? There are some designs floating around online from a couple of artists that are probably easy to find on Google.

    • @AngelaClaytonCostumery
      @AngelaClaytonCostumery  7 років тому +2

      Thanks! I like a lot of the designs, but they aren't very historically accurate and the ties to existing characters means they aren't valuable for my portfolio. So for me it isn't really worth spending so much time and money making them, even though they are pretty.

    So you like Legally Blonde the musical. That statement made my day, I love to sing to the songs 💕
    Also found amusing that you talked about the Borgias. I plan to cosplay Hatsune Miku cantarella version mixing the 3 dresses so it can be the most beutiful while dancing on stage. The song is supposed to be related to the borgias, as the wiki says...
    Thanks a lot for the video, it's so Nice to hear you!💕💞

    I was surprised by your answer to the musical questions since you only mentioned Wicked and Legally Blonde. Yes, both great musicals but you should check out Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (my favorite) or Carousel for period pieces. Yeah they aren't the most original choices, I'm aware! I'll have to check out the ones you recommended. I used to listen to a lot more obscure stuff, but I lost most of my music when I switched computers a few years back and have been too cheap to repurchase a lot of them (and they lose a lot of their magic when you have to listen to ads between each song).

    I love this video and I am very happy you did it because it actually answers a few of my own questions I was going to ask eventually. I do have one question tho: what happened to your orchid?

      My orchid is alive and doing well! I actually have four now and have kept them all alive for more than a year. I moved them into my bathroom since I was a bit paranoid about bugs (and they get better light in there anyway) which is why you don't see them anymore!

    • @ogga
      @ogga 8 років тому +1

      She said in the comments section of a previous video that she uses the "rag-curl" method. which is basically when you just wet your hair and then roll small sections of your hair in a rag and pin it to your head and then wait until your hair dries and then take out the rag. just look up "no heat curls" or "rag curls" on youtube

  • @sarahportelli93

    If you do ever get to travel to Europe, don't miss out on Florence (The Uffizi, nuff said), Lazio (the region Rome's in. Loads of amazing cities with fantastic castles outside the capital) and London ( The Victoria and Albert Museum should be a rite of passage for anyone into historical clothing).
    I'm not saying this because I have some undying European pride (far from it right now :| ) but because I feel that these places really opened my eyes in terms of understanding historical fashion and could be of serious inspiration to you or anyone who is interested in costumery.
    Barcelona is another great place to go, there's a few astounding Vintage clothes shops with legit Victorian clothing for sale, if you ask nicely (or just look like you've found heaven) the owner might let you spend as much time as you want gawking at a piece.

    I know you might not answer this but my question is, your costumes appear to revolve around European history but do you have any desire to branch out to Asia, Africa or South America?

    • @AngelaClaytonCostumery
      @AngelaClaytonCostumery  8 років тому +3

      Not particularly. I'm not opposed to it, I just haven't seen anything from those countries that really inspires me (at least as far as historical costumes go). Though that probably has more to do with my lack of exposure to them rather than the costumes themselves. But since there are so many European costumes that i'm enthusiastic about and haven't made yet I haven't been very motivated to branch out.

    • @ogga
      @ogga 8 років тому +4

      That was my question as well. I know your trying to build a portfolio, so it might be beneficial to at least look into it. you wont grow by doing the same thing over and over, and your portfolio won't be very diverse. It would give you a big advantage when trying to find a job in costuming to show people that you can do more than just european historical costumes. After all, you don't want future employers to think you're a one trick pony.

    • @AngelaClaytonCostumery
      @AngelaClaytonCostumery  8 років тому

      Just not my cup of tea! I don't think the fiber lends itself well to long wigs since they are so difficult to detangle. I've also had more construction issues with their wigs (manufacturing errors in the cap, kinked fiber out of the bag, etc.) and find them way more prone to shedding than all my other wigs - despite them being the most expensive I own. But I haven't purchased a wig from them in yearss so they may have improved all that! Also I have a small head so their wigs look like hats on me, it's sort of silly haha.
