Defeater has taken the crown of my favourite Hardcore band from my runner up, Knocked Loose. There is something exceptional about how these dudes meld traditional Hardcore vocals, with experimental Post Punk, and a hint of a Midwest Emo. There is a distinct control of emotion, that the vocalist achieves with his technique, you gain this sense of frustation, saddness, and yearning; simultanously the vocalfry furthers the ambience, serving without compromising the lyrics with to much distortion, every word is distinguishable upon intent listening. The lyrics mirror the emotion of the delivery, dealing with the introspective struggle, of what it is to be human, to try to live upto the strengths and principles, we see in our role models, fathers and father figures. Unlike the typical Emo approach, where it could come across as juvenile or dramatized, It is a geninue, heart felt, and gutt wrenching reflection of struggling with being honest and responsible with yourself, over your shortcomings, and measuring those weaknesses against the virtures of your role model.
And that’s why this song is so good. Not bragging but my father was there. And although he’s a very flawed man he’s still my hero and every time I hear this song it’s like he’s challenging me to be better than myself and to be better than him.
Buried him in the cold wet ground Familiar faces would have made him proud The military and the working man The history of the life he led “Can you feel that soil covering your coffin?” Can you feel? [x3] (So, what are you gonna do?) Be the hero that your father was (So, what are you gonna do?) Be the man he made you to be And you are your father's son Dear Father, Dear Father Be the hero that your father was Be the man he made you to be The war torn stories that he told you You've got a hell of a lot to live up to An airborne man with a scar and a wound “Never make a promise that you can't prove” Dear Father, Dear Father (So, what are you gonna do?) Be the hero that your father was (So, what are you gonna do?) Be the man he made you to be And you are your father's son Dear Father, Dear Father Be the hero that your father was Be the man he made you to be “Where are you? Where are you? You coward, you coward” [x2]
Seeing them together with Loma prieta, pianos become the teeth, verse and many others. Only 3 days left but I fear I will die from excitement before those days are over.
defeater is one of those actually good bands in the sense the whole band only changes on the singer, the sound that is produced from the guitarest and drummer is unique and one of a kind
song means alot to me, after losing my father some years back. if it wasn't for this music, i would have no outlet in life. and would have lost myself to depression and anger..
I listen to this Master Piece on a daily basis. Can you feel the soil, Covering your coffin, Can you feel, Can you feel, Can you feel, Can you feel!?!?!
This band is amazing I always hear about it this band has been an inspiration to a lot of my favorite bands so I checked out and they're fucken amazing cant wait to see them at Warp!
@halfwayjames YAYYYY you are soooo right. music is never supposed to be a battle as to who likes what and how that makes you who you are... shiettt love and dont hate. you got the right mindset everyone has to get over the issue of labeling what has to be what. props man love all.
@XXOAPTRAGEDY Empty Days is another piece of the story, about what the older brother was doing after the younger brother killed their father and traveled. The albums are all historical fiction, accounts of a family dealing with lower-class economic struggles that came with the post-WWII period in the U.S.
Though HH and Defeater's lyrics have a different focal point (straight edge life vs. the narrative of the family), they are still very similar bands. They even touch on some of the same themes: alcohol and drug abuse, social issues, familial struggle. Their style of melodic hardcore is unique to them; they sound more like each other than any other band sounds like them, and I'm sure neither group would mind the comparison.
@thexbreak1 whats wrong with my 2 favorite bands tour togheter? super fun easycore moshes with emotional hardcore whats not to love? plus there actually be girls in a defeater concert
@XXOAPTRAGEDY He's right though, in that if you had a band that Defeater sounds most similar to, it'd be Have Heart. Both are on Bridge 9, with a very similar sound. Clearly they are different bands, but they sound very much alike. However, Defeater's lyrics are based around the fiction they've written through their past three releases and Have Heart's lyrics generally focus on social issues and straight edge lifestyle.

This song is just BEAUTIFUL. I adore Defeater, so much passion in their music
this song just makes me hate my dad for not being the dad he should've been. but it also inspires me to be the best dad that I KNOW I can be.
And that’s why this song is so good. Not bragging but my father was there. And although he’s a very flawed man he’s still my hero and every time I hear this song it’s like he’s challenging me to be better than myself and to be better than him.

Can someone please do a lyric video for this song?
@thychaos No dude, trust me most people into this kind of shit, aka the wave, and b9 hardcore are kids who are post scene
@helmuth8806 Considering the song fits into the overall storyline of their albums I highly doubt that.
Crap, now I have ti find sanxdimas' comment to laugh at it.
Not entirely, Defeater aren't the same as Anti-flag, similar but not the same! They stem from the same genre but are offsets of it
