Hi Vera and Christian good job rebuilding that Turbocharger, carried out with your usual standard of precision and skill. When the video started and Fabian's Disco was mentioned I thought "oh no, it's exploded again!". But being only "the lost footage", whew! all's ok.
Dear LR Time Thank you once again for fantastic video. How about getting Fabian to give us an update on the performance of his engine. We as a community have all watched the rebuild process with horror, shock and Awe at the level of skill required to complete the rebuild.

A tip I found a few times on UA-cam for removing rusted in studs is to run some candle wax around the base of the stud as you heat the surrounding area, after breaking three studs on a 50 year old exhaust manifold I tried this and the rest came out a lot easier without breaking.
Iv watched all your videos and I’m always amazed at what you can do , but I don’t think you have ever told us your Landrover history . Did you start with buying the Freelander 1 ? Hi Vera & Christian. I've never been bored watching your movies, it's a real pleasure, watching people with passion and decent precision and accuracy at work - and the sense of humor - priceless ;-)
Christian and Vera, good video for a reheated left overs type of meal. It might have been the first time I heard Christian say OMG!! Thank you for posting.
Great video as usual. Japanese use M7 threads, older Gsxr suzuki cam cover bolts are M7, the Japanese manufacturers also use M10x1.25 instead of M10x1.50 like the rest of the world. 👍
That was a very interesting video, even though I (hope) that I will never have to do it!! Christian seems to have an enormous amount of patience, and not forgetting his "German" precision in every job he takes on 😉. Well done to Vera for her great video taking and a serious amount of OMG's, for which without them the weekly episodes would not be the same!! Great Sunday evening watch, look forward to next week. Take care you two.
A very interesting Video. For a moment, I was thinking that the Turbo only worked (was driven) from one side of the ‘V’, until I noticed the heavily insulated cross-over exhaust pipe that runs behind the rear of the engine from the other side. We certainly learn a lot from your videos. Thank you.
The flexible sections on those crossover pipes fail too.. :( Really difficult to access to swap out without lifting the body, but it is possible. Ask me how I know... :)
Hi Christian, very good video and you are very clever can do any kind of work on landrover better than landrover dealers, and also very cost effective way. I admire your skills.
Hi the missing video!!. Was well worth you finding it. You are such a great team. Wish I had that milling machine of yours. Keep those videos coming. Yay 😀.
Hi , one man , one lady , goffer , on a mission , to save and rebuild every other JRL 4x4 on the planet , leaving a few for others to do . When are your clones going in to production for rental ? Great work you two . Very interesting .😉
Great video guys, amazing knowledge required in completing that work. My D3 turbo is still going well, but assume at some point it would require a change out, will happily invite you over to Australia to complete that one for me 😁
I didn't hear the word Toyota mentioned once in the video, silly Toyota's. I need to go back and watch a previous video as I just started getting a C1A20 error with my 08 R.R. Sport, hopefully an easy fix, love the videos and watch them every Sunday.
Great video guys , I stuffed my cartridge replacement up like how you mentioned, I only measured the threaded screw adjustment which was different to the aftermarket one which led to actuator faults and engine going into limp mode Such a simple step that caused me to replace the turbo when on the car * not fun * 😒 I do like my method of jacking bolts rather then the blow torch though for separating the cartridge 🤣🍻
You are a very cleaver man Christian. Can you imagine the average LD owner paying workshops to do what you can do at home? In Australia 🇦🇺 parts for these vehicles are obscenely expensive and add to that $130 per hour labour cost after 150,000 klms these cars are cost prohibitive to own
Hi Both. great to watch. I think though for the common garden DIY mechanic a simple replacement would be the safest bet. most of us do not have access to an amazing workshop and skill base you possess. wish i did though. brilliant to watch. and i far from agree with the earlier very negative comment. i wish my parents would have been like you pair.. lmao. I have my sticker and patch and proudly display them. you have to get that update video on fabians engine sorted i so want to know how it is. See you next week guys.
Machining the housing was optional. Other than that, everybody can get this done. The 130 euro turbo still works. I ordered several models back then for up to 300 Euro and the cheapest one looked the best. Christian
Excellent engineering videos, thanks both of you.. I do not actually own Discovery, I am a Defender fanatic/owner however I can not wait every week to see what is your videos will be... Keep up the good work
What's the latest on Fabians Land Rover is it running super smooth now after all that work you did, must run like new. Thanks again for sharing your content.
Just would have been nice to point out that before you start rebuilding a turbo you check that the actuator works. We do that by getting someone in the drivers seat and just putting the ignition on, at that moment the actuator move's the vain's by closing them ready to start. Sometimes the vain's seize so you can reach through and disconnect the actuator arm then try again. You can see them move by looking up from the bottom of the car . If then the actuator still doesn't work it needs replacing. The vain's can be bought separately for around @130 euro's off Ebay. When you receive the new vain's it is easy to understand how they fit? I found out all this information at my own cost so this is great information to have. One More point when my actuators broke down both side's no fuse was blown so when they where replaced they both worked first time.
I loved the last video of the turbo rebuilding, I would love to know what brand of cartridge or turbo center they used, or what part number of the brand they used
Amazing stuff, started watching your channel since few months as I bought myself a D4, have to admit you guys are at a different level ! I need a lot of guidance and advice from you for my LR4, anyway I can reach you for it ? Nevertheless like your love for LR.
Always a thumbs up! Great video.... but I do wonder if an aftermarket or refurbished unit would be more viable. That said we enjoy watching these videos as much as you do making them, OMG! Just another thought, was there an opportunity to adjust the wastegate/boost pressures doing this? The 2.7L engine is very conservatively spec'd as standard.
Well, after that HPFP debacle, we were kind of done with refurbished. Actually; we are still done with refurbished parts. And a cartridge was the cheapest option back then. When we did this work, we were in the middle of the engine rebuild and were just glad we could get parts at all. Covid was also still very present with delivery and availability problems. And it was not our engine, so we had to consider the money Fabian had available at the time. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Ooh...the lovely spanish Ajusa brand (it reads Ahusa). They always have what you search for, until the part arrives and you discover it doesn't fit. Well, to be honest, sometimes it does, not like the Elring's..which always fits:)
Ahhhhh.... ok! Now I understand, thank you for the movie upload... what a revelation. So all you need to do this is: 1. Multiple workshop rooms and equipment worth over 400,000.00 EURO 2. Enough curse words for the entire Land Rover family of engineers (may their dunkeys only run in circles!). 3. Retirement for the time required, no other travel aspirations 4. One of the reasons l sold my LR3 my fear of the turbo charger “going” and being told it’s recommended the whole body is to be lifted from the chassis (whoever designed this engine needs to be shamed) and the garage cost would probably exceed the value of the vehicle as LR3’s with “problems” can be bought pretty cheap in the U.K. see EBay LR3 spares or repair Just getting to oil/grease free up that actuator via the front wheel is like trying to open your front door through your letter box. Again such a shame a great vehicle spoiled by that short block rubbish engine. Great video guys
Took me 3 days to do a turbo swap in my driveway without lifting the body. I can see why mechanics take the body off. It was very difficult, but not impossible.
Yes it’s possible without taking the body off. I had a new turbo (thankfully under warranty but and independent and needed a fight) the garage did it, but was a few days work.
@@davidedwards4125 yes lm aware as l said it’s “recommended” either way that 05 LR3 of Veras - can be bought for a song in the U.K. needling a turbo fitted - if LR want £1100 for a gearbox oil change l dread to think of a turbo fit
As allways nicely done. How did you manage to open the Nuts to the Exhaust in the First place, when i Look under My Disco i cant even recognise a Hex on Them... 🥴
Interesting decision to just re-core the turbo. When my LR3 turbo went bad, I replaced the whole unit with a new Borg Warner full assembly. I tore the old turbo down just for fun and the vanes were jamming in the exhaust housing. If I had re-cored it, the vanes would still jam as there is no obvious way to service them. Considering how difficult it was to do a turbo swap in the car without lifting the body, I would recommend just to swap the full assembly. People talk about lubricating the actuator linkage to stop the vanes jamming, but I think the jamming is caused by carbon build-up in the variable vanes, not the linkage. Once I soaked the turbo in brakecleaner, the vanes were much better, but I still wouldn't reuse it.
You have to remember that it is Fabian's Discovery and money. Money is always tight with an engine rebuild. I think by that time, already 3000€ were spend. 🙋♀️Vera
Hi Christian/Vera. Can you tell me what that very professional looking red glue for the bolt heads is called please? I would like to buy some. I too would like to have really cool looking bolts on my Toyota when i need to repair something on it after a billion miles.
Love it, but it's not an option for us here in Germany. Just too expensive, especially now with the gas prices, and don't even get me started on the taxes we have to pay for an V8. 👍🙋♀️Vera
You looked so much younger Christian. How long ago was it since you rebuilt Fabians motor? 5 or 10 years? :) Ha, ha, I know, you said it over and over two months ago...though I reckon its 3 months, but just details. Don't worry Christian, you look as young as the day I subscribed.
Help please. Hello, thank you for your video. With leaking turbo, do you have sometime loosing power? I have on a TDV6 big grey smoke when i push the rpm and sometime loosing power. More when i run faster. Must make a restart engine when runing to get power again.
@@Vera_and_Christian Hi again, thank you for your answer. I delete today the egr system i blocked air and disconected the wires. I do not a programation to delete it so i still now with an engine light. But i lost like 65% grey smoke in all situation. I suspect now my temp water wire because i have full high level hot engine red light( for little seconds) when i run on bad road (sorry for my bad english).
Christian, do you have MAP gas torches in Germany? MAP gas burns at a much higher temperature than butane or propane, consider investing in a oxy acetylene kit. Since the Chinese has start making Magnetic Induction Heater Kits, now they can be had for about $200.
Christian did you check the flatness of the exhaust manifold before you re-fitted the assembly? Knowing you, you probably did lol but normally those manifold bend like a banana and have to be machined flat. I am a subscriber to Barum Engines UA-cam channel here in the Uk and I've seen him do a few of them. The last one a couple of weeks ago was so bad he had to machine more than 2mm off it to get it back flat. Fabian's one must have been pretty good then? Love the lost video of 5his turbo rebuild
Hello Mate, i was having a Engine System Fault message on my dashboard so i decided to remove the Turbo on my 2005 Range Rover Sport 2.7TDV6 and cleaned the internal Turbo Vanes to ensure free movement of the Turbo Actuator Arm. Before removal of the Turbo i was getting error code P132B-00 - Turbo/Supercharger boost control A performance (permanent), now after cleaning up the Turbo, i also decided to reAdjust the adjustment screw settings for the actuator arm to have more room for movement. After re installing the Turbo back in the car the Engine System Fault error was gone and there were no more error lights on my dashboard. I am now getting DTC P138E Turbocharger boost control position sensor A - minimum/maximum stop performance with no error lights on my dashboard. I am also experiencing power loss on high rpm with these DTC's "B1B02-28 Low Frequency Coil" and "B1C57-14 Unused relay drive". Could you please help me solve the problem with my car. Thanks
😱 That is terrible I think. It is possible that the actuator runs out of stroke. Did you transfer the setting as I did. Check out the two videos from Outback Discovery on UA-cam. He had the same issue as you and then he fixed it in a video later. Big job. Christian
I hope Vera and Christian know that there will come a time when they get deliveries arriving with little notes on saying; Engine out of x,y or z. Can you please repair.
I keep seeing Americans putting taps in their Milwaukee cordless drills and running them in and out of threads in a few seconds. Until I see Christian doing that, I'm going to keep using a normal tap-wrench. :-/
The irony is just killing me, my discovery sport is in the shop as we speak getting a new turbo installed. To which I got a turbo under boost code as check engine light came on. Now a whole new turbo had to be purchased?! I dropped off car to LR, with no mechanical noise, nor smoke from turbo. I had cleared the only code that had come on, cause it was going to be couple weeks before they could diagnose car. Time came to bring car in and get it fixed . Light hadn’t come back on yet and drove fine whole time, long as ya didn’t get on it like a crazy person. Technician put over 500 miles on my car trying to get check engine light back on so the computer could pin point what to change. I noticed by driving it, the waste gate had to be loose not sealing causing the code. So why couldn’t the technician de-deuce this while putting all those miles on my car ? He saw the code in the history, but had to have that light come back on, only to say needs new turbo and catalytic converter??? Just not adding up ?!?
I only watch your channel to see and hear your lovely wife Vera, I find the OMG's she comes out with all the time really entertaining, I bet she screams 'Oh My God' plenty in your bedroom you lucky dog
Funny, and lots of great content, like usual. Dave Moegle says, "Watch your eyeballs", obviously for protection. My mom says, "Open up your eyeballs", when you're looking for something. Vera says that the turbocharger repair kit looks like those lunches that you get in the states. She's right, way too much stupid packaging for no purpose except to add to landfills. What do you call "the other part of the thread"? Answer, "the other part of the thread". If you want to ruin your channel completely, you should make a compilation video of all Christian's arguing and yelling that you cut out over the years.

You won't need it then 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
What do you think about gas engine V8 that we have in North America?
Love it, but it's not an option for us here in Germany. Just too expensive, especially now with the gas prices, and don't even get me started on the taxes we have to pay for an V8. 👍🙋♀️Vera
You looked so much younger Christian. How long ago was it since you rebuilt Fabians motor? 5 or 10 years? :)
Ha, ha, I know, you said it over and over two months ago...though I reckon its 3 months, but just details. Don't worry Christian, you look as young as the day I subscribed.
He just had a fresh hair trim that day. That's what it was. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Help please. Hello, thank you for your video. With leaking turbo, do you have sometime loosing power? I have on a TDV6 big grey smoke when i push the rpm and sometime loosing power. More when i run faster. Must make a restart engine when runing to get power again.
There are many potential issues for smoke. Can’t be diagnosed remote. Christian
Ребята привет с Алтая (россия) !
Someone should make Fabian an honorary Brit.
Christian, do you have MAP gas torches in Germany? MAP gas burns at a much higher temperature than butane or propane, consider investing in a oxy acetylene kit. Since the Chinese has start making Magnetic Induction Heater Kits, now they can be had for about $200.
Yes we need to invest in our workshop, Robin is giving us a hard time also. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Its a good job Christian doesn't turn to crime! I believe they are still looking for the mysterious European end of the Hatton Garden robbery in 2015.
wow - skills AND patience!
is Fabian's LR still running well?
So far so good 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Christian did you check the flatness of the exhaust manifold before you re-fitted the assembly? Knowing you, you probably did lol but normally those manifold bend like a banana and have to be machined flat. I am a subscriber to Barum Engines UA-cam channel here in the Uk and I've seen him do a few of them. The last one a couple of weeks ago was so bad he had to machine more than 2mm off it to get it back flat. Fabian's one must have been pretty good then? Love the lost video of 5his turbo rebuild
I did not pay attention to this. The bolts seated ok, so I hope it’s good. Thanks for the hint. Christian
M7: Peugeot injector studs. So, yes, very French!
Opel Cih engines have m7 bolts for the timing cover 🤓😎
😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Sehr cooles Paar
🤗🙏🙋♀️
It's the variable part of the turbo charger they fail and get sucked into engine
I keep seeing Americans putting taps in their Milwaukee cordless drills and running them in and out of threads in a few seconds.
Until I see Christian doing that, I'm going to keep using a normal tap-wrench. :-/
👏👏👏
I won’t see your reply to my answer. Better write me an email. Never heard of a 500 mile test drive. That is indeed ridiculous. Christian
how on earth are you going to balance the turbo? because it will vibrate its self to death less it's perfectly balanced.
The cartridge is balanced and has been running for 6 months now. 💪👍🙋♀️
👍👍👍👍
Come to America, stay at my house, work on my Land Rover. Sound good?
We get offers like that from all over the world, and some of them are actually serious😅👍🙋♀️Vera

I only watch your channel to see and hear your lovely wife Vera, I find the OMG's she comes out with all the time really entertaining, I bet she screams 'Oh My God' plenty in your bedroom you lucky dog
Germans and Italians are very seldom mistaken.
This footage was from last year. I totally forgot about it. Talk to you soon.
Boring would be the Toyota time channel...
If this is tedious.. then buy a Toyota and spend weekends cleaning it and polishing your spanners. 😁
You mean a 40 year old Toyota 😅👍 🙋♀️Vera
