Glad the Hither-Thither staff was included. I saw a lot of comments about how it's usage in the film, if this was a real D&D campaign, really leaned on the "rule of fun", so it's neat to see it actually has stats to account for what it does. I haven't checked the details on any of the Magic the Gathering campaign books, but I'm wondering if there's any items in those y'all can cover.
The blackstaff in several novels can also transform into several different forms. One form allows the true black staff to cast spells threw another person holding the staff without using the staff holders action
Fireball is fine as it is. The memes about how overpowered it is are based on poor use at low levels and the fact that in previous editions, PCs had less HP, so it was more effective. Average damage for base fireball is only 24.
Something for consideration is that Lightning Bolt has the exact same damage scaling, is resisted by less enemies, and is harder to hit a large number of enemies with it due to only doing damage in a line.
@@chugiakjrtheplaywwright6461 It's alot easier to hit multiple targets with lightning bolt vs fire ball It's allways possible to draw a line between any two people withing 100ft of each other (especially since you can angle in up or down) fire ball will only hit one dude if your dm keeps them spread out
lol, it isnt Drzzt's staff of the magi but his wife, Cattie-Brie, does wield an upgraded Staff of the Magi ( special druidic tree wood + magical gem foci {gift from Harpell's} + being "bathed" in primordial blood ({magera the dawn titan})
I think a good staff for D&D could be based on Lorg Mór (Lore-ug More) from Irish mythology. With one end it could kill 9 with one blow, and the other end could heal and resurrect the dead. It belonged to The Dagda, one of the kings of the gods, who also channeled his druid powers through it. The D&D version could have some kind of cure wounds spell at low-level play and maybe true resurrection at high levels. Not sure how to incorporate the "kills nine targets in one hit" part, though. At least not a fair way.
omg, imagine thinking the Walking Statues of Waterdeep were animated armor! The GALL. They make the Blackstaff much much cooler and more powerfull. Kinda sad you guys missed that, Waterdeep is best setting :)
I'm on episode 60 of Dungeon Quest Saga on podcast form and it quickly became one of my favorite liveplays. Even though I usually don't like sci fi ttrpgs you find awesome and interesting ways to mix fantasy and sci fi together. I haven't looked at the book you're coming out yet but I was thinking recently how awesome it would be if you came up with a future combination of sci fi / fantasy space kraken like you have done with a lot of the other traditional creatures. Hopefully that isn't a spoiler for the rest of the season or maybe it could be in the next campaign..? :)
a level 14 Artificer (Artillerist) gets the most out of Staff of the Magi they turn it into their Arcane firearm and get to add a d8 damage to any of that plus it is fun to see it as a sniper riflestaff of the Magi
I hope we get to see some discussion about the Fizban hoard items that scale from uncommon to legendary, maybe alongside the Glory of Giant items if they follow a similar trend.
So excited to get that fresh book smell😤😮💨backer #26 🎉 Thanks for inspiring me into this amazing hobby. Being a DM has become a passion of mine and I can’t wait to lead my campaign into Drakken star. Love what you did with that black obelisk stuff, was that inspired by the theory about Asmodeus using those to do some world take over stuff but it backfired or something? Would love to see a video on that subject from you guys!
For Hither Thither, you aught to shunt the creature out the way they came in should one or both portals vanish. Otherwise your party is going to use it as an instant kill move if it slices them in half with grappling and forced movement.
I haven’t finished, but one of the ideas I have is that I take weaker stats and rods that if you can get them all together become a Staff of the Magi. No one has found all the pieces but in progress of try to do so again. Also yeah the Baldurs gate 3 does look good and will be trying it out once it is finished
I have had my hands on the staff of the magi once and after playing with it for a while my DM came to me, hat in hand, and asked if he made a situation for me to do so in an epic fashion, would I please destroy it. Good times
The base audio volume over the past 10 or so episodes has been quite low, so that even with the volume cranked to max on my headphones it is difficult to hear you guys talk. I know it's not my headphones because none of the other UA-cam shows I watch are having this issue. Thanks Guys! Love your stuff.
I’m going to be that guy in the comments and say that you can’t control 20 statues with the Blackstaff because there are only 8. Unlike golems, they are like 100 feet tall, making this item even cooler! I’m running dragon heist so I wanted to throw it out there. Also, one reason the staff protects the open lord is because one of the blackstaff whose soul is trapped is the dead husband of the current open lord.
I never really saw Waterdeep as Forgotten Realm's Gotham City. The title of "Forgotten Realm's Gotham City" always belonged to Baldur's Gate in my mind. Meanwhile Waterdeep was "Forgotten Realm's Metropolis". Especially when Baldur's Gate is always portrayed as like... darker and grungier than Waterdeep, just like how Gotham City is often portrayed as darker and grungier than Metropolis.
My friend and DM let me take the Staff of the Magi. Unfortunately we never got to any combat so far and are on indefinite hiatus… I’m pretty new to D&D and was really looking forward to throwing fireballs and lightning.😢
If you look at every other AOE damage spell, fireball they do 2d6 less damage per level on average. Why? Because that's the damage their meant to do, and fire ball performs for a 5th level spell. If you check the spell design guide lines in the dmg you'll see what I mean
20:21 I'm now imagining an Orc Wizard whose staff is just another Wizard who is too scared to piss him off and so just does as he's told. "So went the story of the Orc Wizard Bloodmaw the Big Head, wielder of Drenthor the Wise, Not-So-Strong as Bloodmaw."
Re: fireball, it IS a bit overturned, but it's fine at its level. It doesn't scale well on upcasting, especially when you have more powerful options to use those higher level spell slots. Lightning bolt is just as good, except that as a line, it can be less impact full since you're going to struggle to get more than 2 or 3 targets, while fireball just nukes the whole room.
Rod Stewart is a legendary Rod
This comment wins.
Serling was in the "zone" I also "love" me some Laver

Appreciate the puns, knowledge, and company. Thanks guys.
This should help STAVE off the boredom! I wonder if they'll mention the vampire, StROD? 😏
Don't forget MordenCanen
Thanks for the heads up on the spoliers
Wow! I didn’t know you guys had a UA-cam, I’ve been binging on Apple Podcasts lately and really enjoyed your stuff!
I think this is my new favorite episode
I have really enjoyed the breakdown of the Legendary items and am really looking forward to see if you do one for some of the key Very Rare items.
Only commenting for BG3, but I've really been loving your content guys! I binged several episodes over the last months.
Yay another dungeon cast episode to bright my day
Artificers also like the Staff of the Magi.
Love the energy you two have on these staff/rod episodes!! Just a couple of kids at heart 😂
I can only imagine what would occur if FBats Surgeon found one of these staffs, rods, or wands. Thanks for the great content!
14:24 Speaking of Naruto, Kakuzu is basically the "I cast Fireball" meme of the series, in a literal way
The blackstaff in several novels can also transform into several different forms. One form allows the true black staff to cast spells threw another person holding the staff without using the staff holders action
Raistlin has the staff magius in dragon Lance which is their world's version of the staff

Give it cure wounds and inflict wounds

BG3 is my most anticipated game of the year, hands down!
Cried at the Tupac hologram joke. Now I want to make a bard based on Biggie Smalls.
His name will be Little Bigs and he will be a Gnome Bard.

Rod Serling, also a famous rod or Rod of the Twilight Zone in D&D settings.
So excited to get that fresh book smell😤😮💨backer #26 🎉

I have given a wand of wonder (i think it used to be a rod?) to every party I ever DMed. Always hilarious, no regrets
At 20:25 that microphone prop just starts flashing for no reason. What's up with that?!?
I have had my hands on the staff of the magi once and after playing with it for a while my DM came to me, hat in hand, and asked if he made a situation for me to do so in an epic fashion, would I please destroy it. Good times
49:49 For a resurrection lasting more than 4 hours, see a doctor.

You guys forgot about kitchen staff, who you think is cookin them meals while they're in bar fights
Huzzah!
Long time podcast listener, only saw a few videos here and always strange to put your voices to your faces lol

yes there just golems.. used as houses and restaurants.. and as big as the statue of liberty... but there just golems for sure. ^^
Dang they were not kidding when they said once you go black staff you never go back
What is “fbats”

Couple of dads talking about rods.
It is streaming for free if you are a paramount + subscriber.
Ron Jeremy has a legendary rod....
Pretty sure the pronunciation should be Rod of Rez-erection.
In the movie it seems like she’s in pain when she wild shapes too much.
Why is the audio so low. I have to crank my volume
ill take staff of power over staff of the magi any day
I love Holga, she's my girl
I'd rather you said "dattebayo!" than "believe it!"😂
