I've been using Cubase for 20 years and didn't know half of this. Great video!
I'm binging your Cubase stuff. You're one of the best teachers on this DAW on YT. So precise and well produced. Bless you!
And you also Tim!
@@jefgibbons thanks jef!
I have just bought a zoom h2n mic that came with Cubass LE, and watching you video has taught me so much, at 67 years old, it's hard to learn lol thanks so much for posting from Garry in the UK
Jef, your videos are just so intuitive. You make understanding how to work in Cubase so easy to follow. Thoroughly enjoyable, fantastic stuff.
Jef Gibbons is an absolutely exceptional instructor. Thank you so much, Jef, for sharing your time, talent, and effort in your excellent tutorials! Beautiful composition by you in this one as well.
Thanks so much Cherise!
Hi Jeff I watch all of your tutorials, without a doubt, Cubase should be paying you ,your calm delivery and manor is great and the info we all get is priceless , I was ready for dumping cubase after lots of issues ,lack of understanding etc : you've changed all that. Thanks a million.
Just made my day, thanks Dave!
Great composition!!!! Youre a great teacher too...thank you
Thank you so much for these tutorials. You've helped me out of so many newbie jams. Great stuff!
Thank you for taking the time to present audio editing in Cubase in such a clear and meaningful way. The fact that you obviously have musical talent makes your example easy to listen to and is an added bonus.
Thanks for the kind words Shannon! Much appreciated.
I've been exploring Pro 10 for a while and watching tons of vids, this has been by far the clearest explaination of audio editing I've seen, thank you Jef.
Your calm and clear approach works wonders, much more conducive to learning than all the "Hey what's happening!" stuff.
I appreciate that! I've been teaching this stuff for a long time, so it has become natural!
great tutorial Jef! I started cubase artsit around a week ago and have been watching tons of tutorials, saw a bunch from you and they are all great, explained well.... I dont think I watch a single one from you without liking the vid, just subscribed! Keep up the great work!!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Clear, Concise, Step by Step, to the point instructions.

Hi Jef big fan of your videos. Learnt so much. thank you keep up the good work!!
Thank you very useful ! You're amazing !
Hi Jef.
Just stumbled upon this tutorial tonight, I've just got Cubase AI 11 on my Macbook Pro today, and I was looking for a tutorial that my 63 year old frazzled brain could handle lol, and after watching this first one, I must say that I can't wait to watch more.
I'm away for a few days break from tomorrow, but I'll be sure to catch some more of your stuff on my return.
All I want to be able to do, is to record myself singing to a backing track, thats it really, but I'd like to do a good a job as possible.
Thanks a lot Jef, looking forward to learning more from you. You're a star mate 😉
This is SO HELPFUL thank you.
You're welcome! Glad it's helping out...
I really love your teaching
I think one can read a manual until the pages wear out yet learn more from a practical demonstration in the space of a few minutes. Great videos, Jef and Fred Flintstone over here is learning heaps.
+Ray Brookes fantastic! Glad to hear it Ray!

Jef, you are a Top Music Coach and super talented person!!!!!!!!!
I just got into the Cubase family few weeks ago , after 20 years in FL STUDIO....wow...what a difference! Loving more the creative process!
and I saw what GIBBONS CREATIVE can do!!!
AMAZING!
Thank you for sharing and bringing so much high quality art!
That was a really good lesson - the "basics" title is deceiving - this had some great stuff in there that for a novice is not basic. Really practical advice and I learnt a few things. Thank you :-)
Hello Jef. Thank you for very educating tutorials. The best videos that I have found on UA-cam, by far. Would you please consider posting a beginners tutorial on how to record and edit classical virtual instruments, especially Steinway piano and strings? I am a classical pianist and a Cubase pro 10 beginner, and I write music for radio (and hopefully eventually for films), and I have not found a tutorial on this subject yet. From your previous tutorials I have learnt something about editing, reverb and eq, but I am a novice still, and how to play and edit strings so that it sounds beautiful and realistic is still a mystery to me.. Best regards from Norway!
+Jon Allum thanks Jon! I will try to make that happen in the next few weeks!
Thank you sir 🙏
Most welcome!
Hey sir..thanks for the tips .
Please make a video on working out with videos in cubase..
How to export video along the audio?
How to sync? How to work with video for shortfilms/documentary or else..
Thank you Jef for video explanation, its really really cool :) cheers
great vids!! thanks alot!
how do you shortcut the vol. on one chunk of audio???
Great as always. I have a question. when i copy and paste a section, and then resize it, the previous takes that are underneath poke thru. Is there a fix for this? Thanks in advance.
I love your channel, and am learning a lot. Ive just got in to Cubase and its an amazing tool. Just wondering about you computer keyboard. As it doesnt have a number pad do you re map the keys or work some other way?
Jeff is there a keyboard shortcut for opening Channel inserts ? I've created a shortcut to open the channel( the view with the cubase eq) but how can I keyboard shortcut open the insert effects without mouse clicking ?
01:03 - how can I play guitar that fast ?
Hi Jef! I have a question. In your lesson, you state that the input track volumes are never adjusted as the audio is being recorded on the 'instrument track,' aka vocal, or a guitar track, etc., and that any volume adjustments are to be made on the audio tracks themselves. Isn't that taking up a lot of space in the project, and in the RAM of the computer? Are the input tracks the same as aux tracks as in Pro Tools; which would be routing volume to the audio tracks? Thank you!!
Great tutorial, Jef, thanks!
Do I remember you from the 90's in the mountains west of
Boulder?
Hey Daniel! Hmmm.. I was a teenager in Canada, maybe a different Jef(f) Gibbons? There is a musician up here named Geoff Gibbons... No relation!
Hi ! thank you. How do you grab a chunk of audio without cutting (which command please) ? I saw that you added the video on the first track can it be played in any Cubase ? (you can see the video) ?
I want you to learn me :) is to mix and mastering a song because you are the best love you
Jef, thank you. I m quite an amateur in recording, I am a musician....but want and need to learn how to record my voice, Gain, EQ, etc ! what voiideos of yours do you recommend?
Thanks! I’d just go through the Cubase playlist on my channel, especially the Cubase basics videos!
Thanks for this! Is there a way to add automation lines for audio to, for instance, change the volume throughout the track?
Oh, I figured it out! Haha. I went to the "e" button to the left of the"automation follows events" thing. Then under "show", I hit "volume". I'm in 10.5.
Hi Jef, it's possible to move (nudge) and resize crossfades only using key commands?
Nice video!
I see from this video that you are using clip gain (the little square on the audio event) to adjust the volume of the vocal section for the purpose of leveling out the whole track. If this is done in certain instances won't this mess up with the gain staging of a particular track where this type of edit is being completed?
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks! I see it the other way around. This way the track doesn’t need automation for subtle level inconsistencies. Taking it too far would definitely mess with the compression though!
Hello I have a quiestion. Sometimes I see the cursor stready in the middle and the audio scrolls while I am playing and sometimes I see the audio stready and the cursor moves and disappear to the right. How do I control this?, is there a setting or shorcut?. Thanks, great tutorials!.
Question: I’m trying to record my audio inputs separately from my mixer which has 10 inputs. When I try to assign the audio inputs separately in Cubase, Cubase does not recognize that I have 10 inputs but rather only 2. I want to record vocals and a keyboard. But, when I try to record separately, it records everything/all sound from mixer inputs. What could be the solution to this problem?
is there an easy way to nudge regions rather than click and drag?
Hi
In my Audio editor i can’t ser the senter box for volume. I use Cubase Elements 10. Is there something i must check ? Or is it not in Cubase Elements ?
Regards Tom Anders
I appreciate the video, but you are showing more of _what_ can be done, while I need to know _how_ it can be done. F.i. when I click on the little blocks in the track to resize it, nothing happens! The same counts for cutting/splitting: if I select the little scissors to split the track nothing happens when I try to split it. _How_ do you split, resize, etc. Are you holding ctrl, of shift, or what?
I have to agree Sharon. Simply left-clicking or left-click and dragging often does nothing. It’s sometimes a combination of the left-click with shift/alt/ctrl or all of the above in order for the tools to function as you’d expect/desire. These are great videos @Jef Gibbons, but could be even better if you went into a little more detail of precisely what keystrokes, mouse clicks & combinations you’re performing.
The dB's unit in my cubase is hidden, how can i show it? Because i can't learn compressor please help me my friends, thanks!🙏
thanks for the tutorial, how did you crank the volume up in 12:16? it seems like a shortcut or something? thanks for the vid
It’s a custom key command I’ve made, command up arrow=increment volume by 1 dB, same for command down and decrement!
Thanks a lot Jeff for this video... What M-Audio controller do you have on your desk? Best Regards, Max T.
+Max Tofone that’s an old axiom, upgraded to the komplete kontrol since then!
@@jefgibbons Thanks Jeff for the kind reply and for addressing my question... Best regards, Max T.
2:19, click on either side of a chunk, I don't get vertical lines, it just highlights the whole track
Watch his cursor, Jef is using a keyboard modifier to switch to the Scissors tool. So the “click on either side” is doing a cut, which makes that section of audio a new event. I’m not at my computer and can’t remember if you need to hold Alt, Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac), or Shift but try it and you’ll find it.
👍
too dantheman u can be a master without know music theory.
Ive been using Cubase for years, and still learnt a few things. Thanks Jeff
