    As a Boilermaker I've seen some bad fit ups. You try everything to get it the best you can. Five or six years ago me and my welding partner had a heavy walled 8" supply line. We done everything we was aloud to do, to get a good fit. We had the weld tech, Gf and the plant man over the Boiler come a look at it. After awhile they said weld it. The weld was in the 6g position, the bevels matched up good but we had tight 3/32 gap on bottom and a 3/8 gap on top. It was a interesting fun weld to tig the root pass in it. Out in the field sometimes you just get bad fit ups. Very nicely done root passing the fit up in this video.

      if you get to work on oil and gas pipe lines that set up is not acceptable, so do not accept the set up, the bore of the pipe is stepped and would show on XRAY of the weld, that is why we have ASME pipe standard s world wide, good weld ok but not for ASME standard

    • @henryburleigh615
      @henryburleigh615 2 роки тому +2

      @Justice
      the bore of the pipe and tube turn (fitting) is badly stepped This will cause lack of penetration etc and would fail xray inspection ,may be ok for some non pressure work but not for Petro/Chemical work

    Not that bad. I have closed up gaps up to 3/8" using a stick welder. Vertical ups. 7018 DC reverse. Having a well equipped shop with a cement floor is a bonus. I was a pipe welder in an offshore module pipe shop doing cunifer, stainless, carbon and other materials mainly working for bp, shell and agip, even though the pipe fitting was qc it wasn’t all that good most of the time, a lot of the work was 100% bomb, the inspectors used to be ok if there was a miss match apart from agip inspectors who were very strict even when they could see the issues, I saw the light after 8 years and joined the U.K. fire service and just retired after 28 years service, I still watch pipe welding videos on UA-cam though who knows I might try and get back into it😎😎😎😎

      Eh learn how you’ll wed in field I run loose 1/8” gap with 1/8” wire about 95-100 amps and on hot pad crank up to about 135 ride bevels and feed wire in middle so it doesn’t suck back and after hot pass turn up to about 165-170 until cap. Lots of folks run a whole lot hotter on all steps but I prefer my method for me, heat is your friends with welding just remember the hotter it is the faster you must go for the most part

    Depends too what the pipe is for . I had one once the, guy asks me if I can build up this flange, I had a mig and tig welders ,I just said NO. Real hot steam would go through this and he should have known you can't just put blobs of weld on and grind it , these were machined to a high tolerance and bolt together. We were there over a week, just order it ,only an elbow, only have to wait overnite. This guy thought you weld or cut everything a pin in an electrical he made me cut it in half ,first I asked if he used WD-40 " what do you think I DID! " There was a gallon of it right there, I touched it and it was dry...welders worst nightmare.

    Excellent demonstration and explanation. I had never considered how helpful it would be for penetration to feather down the edges of a tack-weld - it makes perfect sense and I'll add it to my list of processes to try. One question, what's the thickness of the wall on the pipes being welded please?

    • @tolittletime
      @tolittletime 2 роки тому

      They said it’s schedule 40 but actual wall thickness depends on pipe size. If this is 8 inch pipe the wall will be 8.18mm thick. 10 inch pipe would be 9.4mm thick. This can also vary slightly by manufacturer. I hope this helps.

    • @brucebear1
      @brucebear1 2 роки тому

      @@tolittletime Very helpful, thank you. It's hard to guestimate the size of the diameter by looking at a video made with a hand-held camera. It appears from your info that these two sizes of pipe have wall thickness somewhere in the 5/16"+ to 3/8" range.

    How come your not utilizing roll welds. That 90 could have been 2 rolls before taking onto the other peices?

    This is why I like to make all my cuts and weld on the elbows first, then set everything in the hangers and mate it all up in the air with clamps to avoid problems like this. in the last 10 years lasers help a lot to avoid problems like this.

    Under a high fluid flow with any sort of contaminants suspended it will erode those high spots and lead to failure over time

    Why on earth would you not use an HF start welder? Drag start puts tungsten in the puddle and having to break arc by pulling the torch allows the weld pool to be exposed. I realize that you grind the weld after but come on, even my cheap Semadre TIG, stick, plasma cutter has HF start just like my Dynasty 700! You do a great job of walking the cup and laying in a fantastic set of passes though!

    did not know you could refuse a bad fit, one time my weld was disaproved by xrays
    fitter came to me and asked if i weld it ok, i said yes, then he asked for a ultrsound and it was perfect, i was so much relieved, cos it was a 42inch 2 centimeter elbow

    I'm an old Retired, "Welding Rig Road Warrior" from the SUB-STATIONS in the power fields in North Dakota. I WAS a Certified 6G/R Aluminum Pipe Welder down to 3" Diameter Restricted by a wall 3" away,, in both ALUM/MIG and Aluminum Tig welding. ( I just want to make 2 comments here,,,
    MY COMMENT$;, "Out in the real world,, THAT AIN'T A BAD FIT-UP. If you think that's BAD,,???
    Wait til you get OUT THERE. ((HERE ARE SOME WORDS OF WISDOM FROM A RETIRED OLD GUY.))
    "WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND RETIRED AND LOOKING BACK",,,,
    ""The best welds you ever did in your whole life,,,,,,,
    will be the WORST WELDS you ever HAD TO DO in your WHOLE LIFE.!!

    Whats the point of doing tig for big pipe? You can do 3 joints with 6011 or 6010 root then 7018 cap to one of these. The tig looks nice but ive never seen anyone doing a tie in 60 feet in the air standing on live steam lines walking a cup. Is it the typical union wasting time deal kinda like putting 60% of the rod on the stinger then folding the rest down?
