  • This is my conversation with Robert Dean. It took place on 7/20/2021 from his home in Costa Rica.
ROB DEAN is best known as a member of the classic quintet line-up of JAPAN with David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri which acted as the blueprint for DURAN DURAN.
Hackney-born Dean had been recruited by the four Catford boys via an advert in Melody Maker. Although he had already left the band by the time of their wider breakthrough in Autumn 1981, his six-string made a prominent contribution to some of the band’s best known singles like ‘Life In Tokyo’, ‘Quiet Life’ and ‘I Second That Emotion’. Dean was one of the first exponents of the EBow, a battery-powered hand-held monophonic electronic device which produced a powerful infinite sustain that was rich in harmonics.
It therefore allowed for a variety of sounds on a guitar not playable using traditional strumming or picking techniques; other users of the EBow included Bill Nelson, The Edge, Stuart Adamson, Paul Reynolds and Wayne Hussey. Featuring on four of JAPAN’s five studio albums, Dean had found himself marginalized by David Sylvian’s artistic pursuit of a more minimalist keyboard based sound during the recording sessions for his final record with them, ‘Gentlemen Take Polaroids’, resulting in him appearing on just four tracks.
After JAPAN, Dean worked with GARY NUMAN, SINÉAD O’CONNOR and ABC while he was also formed the Australian connected bands ILLUSTRATED MAN and THE SLOW CLUB. Now resident in Costa Rica, the guitarist kindly chatted at length about his time in JAPAN and his return to music with a brand new project LIGHT OF DAY

I really enjoyed your work Rob and honestly you had a role very similar to Manzanera. I am glad you are amongst us and we can here you play.

Interesting chat there with Rob. Followed Japan from 1980 and all the branches that came from that. Had a lot of contact with those in the know. So with Rob's departure i was aware of why, and along with Mick Karn. But at this stage i don't think any of that should be focused. Strong to uproot and finally live in Costa Rica. With the big Japan buzz a while back on the various fan pages, it was great to see Rob's input.

Came across this interview by chance and enjoyed it a lot. I knew Rob quite well back in the day. He's one of the nicest and most genuine guys I've had the pleasure to spend time with. Comes across now just as he did 40 odd years ago.

Met Rob first in 1981, Manchester Apollo, great humble guy like Ritchie , and he remembered me the night after at The Liverpool empire, imo right up there on Ad Sex ,especially solos on Television,Suburban Love, Love is Infectious, he was better imo, maybe I'm biased being *One of the old Faitful*,but he was better than Ronson and Eno,,,, Regards Rob, thanks for the memories,a great upload treat too, rip Mick Karen, and Ryuichi,,,,,

    Great interview
Rob Dean and Richard barberi are keeping the Japan candle alight on social media
    Great guy
Lastly the light of day album is excellent and some of the slow club sounds a bit like midnight oil
The guy who is interviewing Robert seems to be a bit confused on the history of Japan

I saw Numan for the second time in 82 on the I, Assassin tour. It wasn't until a few years ago that I found out Rob Dean was the guitar player. I do remember watching him at certain points wondering what he was doing. I think he was using an e-bow at these points. I never saw Japan, but I have seen all five of them in one form or another (David Sylvian/Mark Isham/Polytown shows).

The name of the track on Beginning to Melt that Rob plays on with the other ex-Japan members is called Ego Dance. Hmm...I wonder whose ego they are referring to? No prizes for guessing who!
I heard an interview with Richard Barbieri recently and he said they didn't think anyone in Japan had an ego, until they found out the someone did have a big ego. Again, no prizes for guessing who!
