I think you are right ... even many really good players don't fully understand the drag effect and how to use it to their benefit.

Derman Genc : Using English helps a lot. As it #1. Helps to get your cue ball in position for your next shot. It’s hard to explain it here. Better to show you. But I am too far from you. #2. Using center does not get you into positional shots. Generally shooting Center will only leave you getting hooked on your next shot. And can’t make your next shot. 🎱👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Most of your video highlighted things that I know well and already incorporate in my game all the time, but the bit about the effect of the drag shot was super interesting to me. Never occurred to be to hit bottom drag spin to accentuate the side action off of the rail (especially on a shot like the one at 7:43 where it looks like top spin would be necessary. Super counter-intuitive and very cool.)
I'm glad you learned a new trick. On the 7:43 shot, topspin is necessary, but the CB picks it up on its own (with slow enough speed).
Good stuff. Just got my new Rogue shaft today, from solid maple. Best investment I made love the way its hits. I was always over powering ball. 1 hour and already dialed in. These drills I'll be this weekend thanks for posting

I tried practicing some of these shots and I don't have nearly the roll distance that you get. I'm thinking of replacing my felt soon with Simonis and I'm hoping that'll help me get more action on my shots.

Hi Dr. Dave! This video has been so influential for me learning how to control the cue ball! I heard some people saying they avoid inside spin on a lot of shots because it can cause someone to miss because of throw etc..is it advisable to avoid using inside on any shots even if it is needed for shape, or is it important to use inside and all other forms of spin if the situation needs it and to use SAWS / BHE / FHE to just make sure the adjustment is made for throw / squerve etc?

I'm glad to hear it. You're welcome. With SAWS, inside spin shots (which are sometimes required) are no different than outside spin shots (which are also sometimes required). You can be just as accurate with either (with SAWS).
Thank you for this. What I don’t understand is where is the cue stick aiming ? How do you aim the cue stick to where you need to hit the object ball if you’re hitting the cue ball off center?
I understand a center hit because you are directly aiming the cue stick toward the point where you want the cue ball to hit the object ball.

What table size do you recommend to practice BCA rules on? Following BCA rules has significantly improved the quality of the games I've played with my friends. My next goal is to practice my spins and cue ball control, but I want to train properly. The billiard halls near me offer 8 and 9 foot tables, but the 9 foot tables are far fewer (ten 8ft tables to three 9 ft tables), so I don't have a lot of opportunities to practice on 9 ft tables since they're typically always booked.
Good pool can be played on tables of any size, under any rules. My favorite game is 8-ball on a “bar box” (7’). Lots of problems to solve, and CB control (with and without sidespin) is critical. I also like practicing on a 9’ table to keep my ball pocketing sharp.
Does it make a difference if you hit the object ball on the far left or right when adding left/right English?
Left/right refers only to the side of the CB you hit. Other names apply based on the direction of cut (inside/outside) and the incoming angle into the first cushion (running/reverse). For more info and demonstrations, see:

Great video! Off topic question, is it illegal in a tournament for a player to squeeze the table cushion with hands without touching any balls right before a shot?
IronLife 12 I can’t think of any reason why this would be illegal, assuming the squeezing doesn’t affect the motion of any balls before or during the shot.
Sidespin is basically all I use in 9 ball tourneys. If you use it right, you'll get position, run out and there you go. Much easier for me anyway vs hard draws and follows. I use sidespin and stuns and natural neutral straight shots.
That is the case with most good players.

1. If I use right english (1-5 O'clock), with various speeds and distances, do I need to compensate more leftward or rightward on the OB?
2. When aiming for an english I saw some players adjust only their cue tips, while some adjust their entire cues in parallel with the CB. What is your suggestion?

Hey Doc as I’m watching your video which is great, but just for a better visual effect, when you are stroking the ball in conjunction with the hit point diagram, that you could be filming from your perspective, looking at the ball and placement of the cue on it. Just saying

This is a personal preference thing. I prefer 9' because it is the standard regulation size and because when I play on 7' in league, every shot looks short. You also need to make sure the table will fit in the space you have:

5:28 is the diagram correct? I cannot see how to pull off a bottom side shot while elevated cue.
It is correct. The diagram is from the shooter's perspective, looking along the elevated cue. With no spin, the cue could be pointing at the center of the CB with a tip contact point well above the horizontal equator. The illustrations, articles, and videos here might help:

The spin diagram is correct. Here the CB is heading into each first and every subsequent cushion going to the left so you need left spin to help it run. For more info, see:

Dr Dave the carbon fibers all come stock with soft tips. Does a hard tip impart more deflection when just paralleling the cue to the right and left? Thanks! I hate the soft tips. 🙂
I also prefer harder tips. I put a Triangle on my Revo. Tip hardness does not have a noticeable effect on CB deflection. For more info on tip hardness effects, see:

Some people prefer a softer tip on a CF shaft so it sounds more like what they are used to. I personally don't care about the sound. For more info, see:

I don't have access to an english 8ball pool table, but I can't see why the principles would be any different. The cloth speed and cushion reaction might be different, but that is an issue with the wide range of American pool tables also. One must learn to adjust to conditions.

They can be the same, but they can also be different, depending on the cue ball angle into the cushion.

Does it work the same in a wool cloth? Or do I have to apply more spin to the cb?
Spin will wear off faster on slower cloths (especially for soft-speed shots), so you will need to add more spin (and use more speed) on a slower cloth.

Keeping it loose it may wobble a stick and ultimately miss a shot.
In snooker when playing a long shot one must have a controlled grip but i can't do it due to my height that is 6.5 inches. The cue goes up and the aim misses
Agreed. The grip should be relaxed, but it should not be loose with slop.
How come the clock drill doesn’t include any “hours” between 3-9 with draw and and side spin?
I would need more distance between the CB and OB to ensure full roll at the OB (otherwise, the CB would not go into the rail at the natural angle). Good idea, though.

so your saying to get more side spin affect off cushion you need to hit cue ball slower rather than faster for the spin to take affect ?
That is true when using a drag shot, where you want the CB to also develop full forward roll, but it is not true in general. With long slow-speed shots, the sidespin actually wears off some (or completely depending on conditions and the amount of spin) before the CB reaches the rail.

if I use side spin the ball that I want to put in the hole will not be the same direction as if I don't use sidespin

I ADDED EACH POSITION TO MY PHONE. THEN I USE PHONE ON TABLE TO PRACTICE SHOTS. THEN I GO ANOTHER DAY AND ADD MORE SHOTS. SOME PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TABLES OR LAPTOPS. SO THE PHONE WORKS GREAT.

I've told you this many times already. I usually edit out all the pre-shot routine stuff to make videos like this shorter. I use SAWS (appropriate combinations of BHE and FHE) on every shot with sidespin, per the info here:

None of the tables I play on will react nearly that easy
One must always be able to adjust to different table conditions. A slower table will obviously require more shot speed and maybe more spin, and some shots will obviously not be possible on a really slow table with dead cushions.
