I had an F9 driver. Awesome driver. My 2016 M2 is still in my bag since 2021. Refitted 2x for shafts last year and it might be out of my bag soon after I get custom fit for TSR2 next month.
M2 has been amazing. Feel/sound is great. They were so ahead of their time with this design
M2 original was absolutely killer!!! I have replaced it but the 3 wood still stays in my bag likely to never be replaced
You didn’t mention the most iconic driver ever which is the Taylormade burner. This is the driver that ended the Persimmon era. In 1983, the Burner and Tour Burner were introduced and the company boasted 147 tour pros as product ambassadors. By 1986, the Burner became the No. 1 driver. I wish I still had mine with the 3 and 5 fairway woods,
Dang, my first driver was the ‘88 Burner 8.5* w/titanium silver shaft-stiffy like. $180 in ‘88
Still have, as well as 3wood & a 13.5* Burner Spoon, & 5wood at 21*
They still work!
I seen one for £30 I got told they were overrated bubble shaft ,I knew someone that had one didn't like it much
@@MartinG-vq8ji we’re re talking about a 40 years old driver. I’m pretty sure that at least 60% of the today golfers are not able to shoot decent shots with it. My dad bought his last golf bag in the late 50’s, 70 years ago. just try to imagine how they looked like. I have never been able to use them. Although he was making pars and birdies. 99% of today golfers would be absolutely incapable to shoot one decent shot with my dads clubs. Woods in real wood and irons 1 and 2. Nowadays they don’t even sell clubs below 5.
The other thing that ended the persimmon era was the two-piece ball. They were so rock-hard that they would literally tear up persimmon clubfaces.
Callaway ended that pretty quickly with big Bertha.
Thank you for verifying the Callaway GBB Epic. Not the Flash just the original I still feel is the longest and best sounding driver I have ever owned and I just bought one to replace mine that was stolen!!!! Looking forward to bringing back that magic
Guy beside me at the range was carrying his over 310 yards!
@@golf5555555 Sound and feel and the speed it produced make it my all time #1 iam not gaming it anymore but still carry it for scrambles and such. Just an "Epic" club
@@davewylie654 I’m curious what your current gamer is
The 2016 M2 has changed my game! In my 50’s, 5’9” and was hitting at best 220? (Calloway ERC or R7 Tp) My golf buddy, 6’4” strong guy, hitting it 50-60 yds further...now, I’m either up with him or just beyond!! That plus a Bettinardi signature series 41” putter has me 10 shots better 18 v 28 hcp...Thank you golf sen-sei
I think Nike square shocker should in its own category. The sound would make any mirror shatter. Awesome video. Would love to see a putter version. Have a good one 👍🏻
I got my f9 for 120 quid, hazard smoke and 9 degree, I love is an understatement, got my me confident in driving again and got my handicap down to an 8 and still declining 😍
M2 2016 in the bag and wont ever change it, had it from new, used the money i won when Danny Willet won the master to buy that and the matchingM2 3 wood...legend very much so!
Ping ISI and Tech was a game changer. had an 11.5 at 16 years old then an 8.5 at 17yo. the assistant pro sold me the 8.5 for his cost stamped with "not for resale" and i hit it 300+ playing JUCO golf in 2003.
I used to dream of owning a Ping T isi. What an incredible club.
I agree with all of them apart from sldr. I doubt it was the first movable weight, but it was the one that moved the needle, the one that basically started the move towards movable weights and adjustability. Just for being the first of its kind it should be legendary.
I still game an SLDR. It’s easily 15 to 25 yards longer than my 915D2. But mishaps go miles of course. I disagree with the radspeed being in poor. Its pretty good for the average golfer.
Good and interesting video. A couple of suggestions. 1. A text list would be good. 2. This is a great historical guide, what I hoped for was a ranked 2nd hand buying guide - ie some reference to cost / availability.
Saw a used M2 at a Golf Galaxy and decided to hit it again for old times sake. It is still an absolute beast.
How did the Ping G10, not make it onto the list? I'm still regularly outdriving players with much more modern equipment. Super reliable and unbelievable build quality
It was 😭 last one and as number 20, missed it out the edit 😂
The G10 and the G20 are two of the best Ping driver I’ve used. Still have and play both a lotta times.
G15 was amazing
I may very well be mistaken but swear that I read somewhere that Lee Westwood continued to keep his trusty G10 in the bag on tour for 6 or 7 seasons during his rise to world no. 1, and it was only after the G400 was launched that the Ping marketing team managed to finally wrestle it from his grip.
@@Gripperstebson12345 I remember hearing that too.
My Ping G10 is still equal to my TSi 2 and Sim Max drivers 🤷🏻♂️
Have since returned both, and staying with the G10 and G20 drivers.
Ping G10 still cuts the mustard for me, also had the Nike Sumo, when I hit it at the range people would cover their ears, sounded crap, felt crap so must be crap lol
Love my TSi, only club that's out driven my old TM super-tri. Still have my 910D2 also, which is like throwing darts, but the distance out of the TSi is ridiculous. Best thing that I ever did to the Cally FTi was accidentally run it over when I forgot the golf bag was behind the vehicle. Everyone knew when I was on the course with that club.... sounded like an empty tin can.
Just picked up the GBB epic for 109 at PGA superstore for $109. And I love it! I hit it was better then my cobra speed zone and all my buddies are noticing! Love it love it love it
M2 2016 is absolute game changer I switched from SLDR to M2 with OEM shaft flex S both . M2 carry 15 -20 yards over SLDR and the spin rate are similar . I would put M2 2016 in god tier alongside with Callaway GBB (green one) . I've tried Stealth on demo day at the range with Srixon Z star xv Stealth only 1 yard longer same launch angle and ball speed. I have to admit that Stealth feeling very soft , solid , springy off the face which is very satisfying. But I don't see myself wasting a dime getting Stealth as the performance are similar. I m curious what M2 2017 performance like compare to M2 2016 ?
Everything is subjective but I don’t think there is an argument that the original metal callaway big Bertha isn’t a legend, paved the way for every driver today, good vid 👍👍
Think you are virtually spot on, only change I'd make is Ping G400 max to legend, traded mine in for G410 and like you say was rubbish, so got rid of that for G425 max, which is like a blend of the last 2, So regret selling that G400 max, it was brilliant.
M2 2016 was a legend had one for over 2 years swapped for the epic didn't get on with it at all 😥 got m5 now and it's great so far 👍 do 3 woods next please
TaylorMade Burner was seemingly revolutionary. It was the rage when I was young. Everyone wanted one.
I went through a 2yr period trying gimmicky drivers G7, rocketballz , tour edge XJ1. Finally bought a Cobra F9 and took awhile to settle in the bag now it's irreplaceable.
I'd like to see a list of the top selling drivers of all time. I'm sure it would be a Callaway, Nike, or Taylormade model (for the last 20 years).
Only have a few issues with your list. The Ping G400 (LST version for me) should go in the Legend slot and the Sldr should drop all the way down to Rubbish. Not only were the feel and sound of the Sldr terrible, everyone I know that played one, including myself had theirs fall apart. I’m not sure how far back you wanted to go, but the Big Bertha Warbird should also go in the Legend space as well.
I had an M2 and it was just too big on the face and had too much to look at when standing over it so i switched over to the sim which is so much better for me at least
You didn’t go back far enough ha wanted to see some real OGs. R7 Superquad TP era stuff. Overall I wouldn’t debate you on much of it - solid picks.
Epic wasn’t on my radar for being a legend. I may have up try it out.
i recently "downgraded" from a SIM2 to a 07 Burner it doesnt go as far, but it just doesnt miss. i will take 230 yards in the middle of the fairway over 260 behind a tree or in someone else's cart two fairways over any day of the week
Simon. Where would you put the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo, and the TM M6? Thanks
Slander me if you want but I like the sound of the square drivers it reminds me the days when it was just me and my dad thugging it out
Very interesting video Simon, which one would you buy?
We had a guy who gamed the FT-i We called it the Ciabatta roll.
Hi Simon, Great vid, could you tell me the difference you mentioned between a 2016 M2 and a 2017 M2 as they look the same, I've had my M2 for 4 years and I can't hit it for toffee, I have kept with it as the saying goes "worker blames tools" but have given up with it after 4 years of pain, I think I have the 2017 version. I have now gone back to my 975j-vs as it says it's legal now on the R&A list of conforming drivers, and I'm hitting it well, Bombs in comparison. Cheers Gaz
Callaway FTi. Everyone hates it, I LOVED it, till I damaged it getting it out if the boot of my car! Forst tried my father in laws one and got on woth it, then bought one of ebay for £27!! I won a long drive comp with that only a few years ago in a comp with work, they all laughed at it before I teed off till I picked my prize up at the presentation, best feeling ever. And a side note, I've never bought a NEW driver, can not justify it at all! I play off 6 with mostly second hand clubs
I would add the Callaway ERC to legendary category.
I have the square Callaway driver..I can absolutely confirm it is a steaming pile.
R11 is still legendary. Yes square drivers looked strange but the MOI was off the charts.
Wife used the c4 for a long time. Bought it second hand for $20. I hit it a few times. About 30 yds shorter than my mavrik. Not bad for 20 years diff. PS Review the mizuno MP-001 you'll love it
"In 2022, every driver does the same thing". Very true.
C4 was my favourite driver of all time. I could hit 90% of fairways. Not the longest but easy to hit and easy to line up. Wish I still had it. Then Calaway great big birthday.
Original SIM is a legendary driver 🤘🏼
I just sold my Cobra SpeedZone Xtreme. Didn't like it at all, it's really loud and the sound is awful. And it went right, although that might have been my fault just a little bit.
Simon, this video has stuck in my head a bit tbh. I have an idea for you...
Take me as an example, 2017 M2, decent driver in my eyes. However, stock shaft. Would a 2nd hand £50 Hzdrus smoke shaft transform my driver and save me buying a new club?
Have a callaway mavrik best driver I've ever had
Love my Mavrik. Got fitted for it, was better than Sim, G410 and Titleist by far at the fitting
The ST190 should have been in the great category. I feel like it was a turning point in their overall design and performance for mizuno. They make great woods and I’m honestly surprised they don’t get more love. I’ve been amazed at how good the ST190 performs for me. Miles better than the M6 it replaced.
Still game 910 D2
Speed ld was badass
Best: Titleist 975D, steel shaft.
Worst: Wilson Staff 1976
Simon I don‘t understand why don’t you have half million subscribers do you need to say or do something to encourage subscription
G400 LST , legend for sure, I should have my ass kicked for selling mine !!!!
Yikes! The SLDR? At least poor! Buttttt, I’d say Rubbish! I’ve seen this driver come back into the shop sooooo many times. Most people can’t hit it well.
Where’s the real game changer R7 super quad TP
905r legend
No ping 425 max?
Nothing for homna ? Was going go buy a driver today
The m2 is a great club, I just hate taylormade for how terrible their paint was then, and to be honest still is, they’re clubs last use wise for awile, but they never last ascetically, and they don’t even try to fix it which makes it worse
I still think the Titleist 983k was the best driver ever made.
I still have Cobra F9 in my bag since it came out. There's no reason for me to upgrade to any driver. I'm very proud of it and won't sell it.
Same! Zero need or reason to. Liked the Sim2 but not that much more to buy it hahahaz
I own the King Speedzone, which is about the same. I have no need to upgrade either!
SNAP!
Same
I had the F8+ but unfortunately the CNC face was cutting the golf ball if I hit it a little low on the club. Upgraded to the Aerojet and very happy with it
I own the 2016 M2 - which I have given to my son to use - so I can take it back whenever I need to. The first Driver I ever hit that could beat it was the Epic Max LS - so yes the original Epic also deserves the Legendary spot. I thought for the historical significance, you would have included the original Callaway Big Bertha Warbird - that driver change the world.
Thanks for watching guys! Look forward to hearing your thoughts 😬
Ping G-Series LST is legendary.
Another great vid Si......I hired the 2014 Callaway Big Bertha driver in the Algarve when it was new out, I played awesome with it while over there. I came home and purchased one, and it's still in my bag today. Its kept me between 9 and 6 handicap for 8 years. I've never even thought about changing it. I recommend it 100% to anyone
I'm using the M2 2016 but in the HL version. It's awesome!
I have one also. It's in the closet tho.
Having played most top drivers over 30 years - one stands apart by far : GGB EPIC
For me g400 best driver out there. People still playing it out on tour. Never let me down fwiw.
I didn't play it, but from what I've read on the various golf equipment forums, the G400 Max definitely belongs in the "Legendary" category.
Come on!!! SLDR not in the legend category ! Loft 🆙 Simon 😆 … like the list … however any ping driver in poor category ! Potentially controversial 🤔
Sold my Rogue for a Mavrik, sold that and went back to my Ping G400, best driver ever!!!
Feels like you've done the G410 dirty here! Also how did the Cleveland Launcher 460 (2008?) not get a mention? Was a monster!!
AGREED 100%!
That Cleveland was the best driver on the market back then!
Sometimes, when my current Ping driver starts playing army golf with me (left, right, left, right) I still pull out my old Cleveland driver!
In 50 years of playing golf, the PING G400 Max is the best, easiest, and most forgiving driver I've ever seen and owned.
For me, my Taylormade R11s has been doing the job ever since I first picked up golf seriously a few years ago. But whenever I decide to upgrade it, I am 100% going to get fitted for it. I have been looking at the Cobra F9 as well as one of the newer Taylormade drivers (sim or sim 2 since they are a bit more affordable compared to the stealth) but am open to anything that suits my swing best
SIM is better than Stealth but if it was me I would wait til next year and buy Qi10Max it's a killer!!!;
The Sumo Square was and is still my favorite driver
I've been the proud owner of a like new used $200 Cobra RadSpeed XB driver for a few months now, and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. It's probably my favorite driver that I've owned, with my Ping G10 being a close second.
Agreed 8
Simon, playing with a 2017 M2, where would you rate it? I recently bought the Speedzone Xtreme cobra 2021... Whilst it was forgiving didn't over me anything over my TM M2 so punted it on eBay.
Would love the same in a 3 wood video... Just picked up a R15 for £10 and it goes straight and longgggggg 😎
Callaway big berth warbird legend driver for me.....poor beyond poor the regal wild thing driver had horrible red/blue contrast shaft just pure ugly too
Still gaming the 2016 M2 and love it! Might get fitted for a new shaft but what a good club.
Callaway FTi Squareway here Draw bias, and I LOVE it, yes its ugly, yes it sounds awful, but I hit it a mile, cant see myself changing.
I bought a Nike SQ Dymo 2 driver new when they came out. Never hit it well. It’s still in my basement. Bet I still can’t hit it. Must have been drunk when I bought that one.
"All years, all eras" and there's not a wooden wood in there? You're having a laugh!
I'll nominate a couple;
MacGregor 693, 1949-1952
Wood Brothers Texan
Great idea for a video. Cleveland Monster was long but lord the sound coming out of that thing! Definitely got the looks at the driving range. Not looks of appreciation I might add. I haven't played all these drivers but I think you nailed it. Great video.
The RADSPEED is a great driver. I had the F9 and the Speedzone, and found the RADSPEED much better for me.
I don't mean to be flippant but your title says best and worst of "all time" but what you have produced is best and worst in "your time". If we are talking all time you must include the classic MacGregors from the 40'/ 50's including M43, M85, Tommy Armour 693, 945 etc, mainly designed by Toney Penna when he was a MacGregor staffer. Those heads were still being played by top pro's 40 years later at the end of the persimmon era so in terms of longevity and tournament and major wins nothing you have listed will even come close. They are true legends of the game.
Don't agree about the radspeed. I picked an ex demo less than a year after it was released with a aldila rogue shaft for under 300 quid. It may have been nothing of an upgrade but it's an excellent driver and goes a mile.
And they look good. I have an f9 and just bought a radspeed, I just like the look of it
I game a Mizuno GT180 and it's changed my game completely, my slice is a casual fade or straight now. its not a bad driver feel
I purchased a C4 demo from the course I used to work at for half-price. I put a Pro-Force 75 shaft in it, and it was, and still is to this day, the best fairway finder driver I’ve ever owned.
Problem is that i tried the out a new Titleist 905 driver a few years later, and even on my worst swings, it was still 20 yds longer, and it was bye bye C4.
I'm a loyal Titleist golfer, I started with the DCI irons & afterward fell in love with golf and Titleist. Now I have the AP1 718's, which I love, but still keep the DCI Approach Wedge in the bag cuz it's the best approach wedge I've ever used. So I was wondering if you've tried the 980 or 985 15 degree fairway wood? I was thinking about buying one to try out since my game seems to get along very well with the older Titleist clubs. I wasn't around when they came out, so I'm not sure what the reviews were back then and if you'd recommend them at all
personally don't agree with the cortex evaluation. the head is great consistent pattern very good dispersion fine tune for flight. like all clubs i have custom shafts an grips. standard/normal regular oem doesn't work for me.
I have an M5 with a Mitsubishi Blue C6 50g shaft (44”) in the bag - I paid $113 for it this spring and am really enjoying it. It suits my needs well as a senior golfer.
Just feeling relieved my d2 915 is between good and great and not in the rubbish category. Question at what point does one need to replace the driver ?
I hit my 410lst really well. Hit it until it broke. The 400lst was nearly the same driver. To say that 410 was a poor driver is selling it very short.
i actually liked the nike sq 😂
Mr. SAS- The best and worst of all time? Well at least maybe of the 460cc. titanium head era. If possible it would be fun to hear your rankings of clubs from the persimmon and steel head times too. Thanks, Bob
F9 is my guy. Just changed the shaft to an XStiff Hzrdus black. Straight and far.
12 dg Sldr mini driver- had in my bag as a 3 wood for 2 years. Loved it.
Used to own an SLDR. Heavy emphasis on the used to. It hated me and I hated it right back. Like owning a big nasty dog, I didn’t know if it would bite me or be my best friend.
Swapped it for a ping G series and can breath a bit easier now.
Thank you - great content as usual. Moneys tight everywhere and spending $600 USD for a driver is insane; oh, you want to upgrade the shaft too?
Salvaged my 1988 TaylorMade Tour Silver Titanium stiff shaft and glued it to my 2012 Lynx Black Cat Tour Forged Beta Ti. It sure is shiny, and it was nicknamed within seconds of the head cover falling off. THOR
At my age equipment isn't as important as it once was. Today just being able to lace up my golf shoes and stick tee peg in the ground is a victory...gravity sucks young man!!!
*SPECIAL thank you: I recently, Saturday evening, found a matching 3-wood to my 2010 TM Burner Superfast 5-wood that i will not part with. All because you said in one of your more recent videos..."Why spend all that money..." Way Kool, thx!!!
All the Best
/Guy
I had a mizuno jpx 900, and at the time I had a 2017 m1 as well. The jpx 900 felt like nothing when you hit it. It was not a great driver in my opinion and my m1 beat it by miles
Since 2017 I have had:
Taylormade sldr
Titleist 913d2 and d3
Callaway gbb alpha 816
Mizuno jpx 900
Taylormade jet speed
Taylormade 2017 m1
Taylormade m3
Taylormade m5
Callaway rogue (the blue one OG)
Titleist ts3
Ping g410
Pxg 0811 + proto
All used I have never owned a “new”driver, always bought second hand even if it was that years driver I bought it at the end of the year second hand and traded in the driver I previously was using for credits
My top 3
1. Taylormade m1 2017
2. Titleist ts3
3. Gbb alpha 816
I still play my Cobra F9 and just can't find anything to push it out of my bag. It sounds great, feels great and I average 270-280 yards with my good shot going over 300.
I love my 2016 M2, but do need to be custom fit for a shaft. Where was the 20th driver Simon?
Still running an adams super ls vst from 12 years ago. Once I got used to a driver, it's hard to switch.
Haha, me and my brother both gamed the Nike. Louder than anything i've ever heard but it performed !!! 😀
Great call and I love the American cousin shout out! Collaboration??
My oh my. No Cleveland launcher. First 460cc and a banger
g400 max is goat
What about donnay lol that driver is the worst of the worst its about as much use as a hole in a life boat lol,I've just bought a cobra speed driver same as the one you listed as poor, yea its not great makes loud bang but it's not that bad I can still get 270/280 yards I'm not paying £500 for some thing that goes 10/15 yards further,I only paid £33 for this cobra lol its not the best but its straight and long ish
