Isn’t is fantastic to look back after so long and these guys have no idea the influence they’ve made on hundreds of thousands of kids around the world with guitar, bass guitar, drums, singing? They have no idea during this interview that they’ve already made an impact and will do so for decades to come...mind blowing really.
This interview always cracks me up. John, you HAVE already made an album that you will be remembered for.... one of the greatest of the decade..... you just don't realize it yet. :)
I hope they now realize the impact they had. Some of the "old head" critics at that time missed the boat with these guys. They didn't get them, their sound and dismissed them outright..they weren't "heavy enough" whatever that is. John can rest assured that the whole of DDs output can never be invalidated by a quick- study-knee-jerk summation or be critically reduced to "disposable" pop. They had a cultural impact as well. Even though not all of their songs are about "fun", the overall sound is exuberant, infectious, there is a certain whimsical quality (reflex, new moon on monday, rio, girls on film, etc) to a number of their songs
Duran Duran are PURE LEGENDS! Since they are my favorite band, I see them as MORE than an 80's group. I want to see them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because it is well overdue for them. Going back to the "Gay Rock" thing (as mentioned in the interview), that is just absurd. I am a straight male who looks up to this band (since 1983 in Elementary School).
And then all of sudden he gets up like he's going to leave but then he sits down and puts his head way back behind the sofa like he's draining his sinus's, it hilarious.
I remember watching this interview when it came out. We all gathered at a friend’s house and squealed when it came on. I think my friend videotaped it, too.
This interview is cool. Simon Le Bon scares me less often, because of his appearance in the old days. John Taylor isn't so bad, but he's so handsome that he puts aftershave on in the driveway when there's no mirror for a British musician to look at himself into it.
mikey p What that means is that I was uncomfortable seeing Simon Le Bon on a segment on The View last year in the Fall. Aging is 1 of my biggest nightmares, so that explains why I don't want to see this handsome British dude on TV or in person when I'm shy enough to meet him someday in my life.
Wow! It's amazing how much the times have changed, especially when it comes to censorship. After all, censorship was officially launched in 1984. The fact that Entertainment Tonight didn't censor this interview after John Taylor said there were critics calling Duran Duran a "fag band" is shocking. Then again, fag is not a homophobic slurs in Europe. If memory serves me right, it means cigarette.
I think Simon's claim that middle-aged truckers were into Duran Duran in 1984 is a little suspicious. I was a young adult in 1984 and to us, Duran Duran was a teenybop band only preteen girls liked. No adult admitted to being into them, just as no adult would admit to being a Justin Bieber fan a few years ago. They were seen as a kid's band in the U.S.
I wouldn’t say they were a “kids band”. They started out in new wave dance clubs and then for about 4 years yes in 1984 they definitely had the majority of the teen fan girl market, but after the 80s they were taken pretty seriously in the early-mid 90s and beyond. I do agree with you about the truckers part. That was just weird and random.
They're very pretty, so they were popular with All kinds of girls, even older women. If truckers liked them they were likely gay truckers, or listening to their music to stay awake, they likely appealed to vastly different audiences, imo.
I am so glad we are freer now to like what we like. Duran wasnt seen as a " heavy" band. Guys were more into a harder edged image in the 80s early 90s. There were a lot of closeted ( and not just gay) fans back in the day. Their mass appeal is being re-examined as we come upon 40 yrs DD
@@orangerollsangelspit John has perfect and symmetrical features whereas Simon has a big nose and face. It's objective but I truly believe that John was chiseled to perfection.
John is uniquely exquisite for a man, his bone structure and his mannerisms are mesmerizing to me. Why poor Simon? He's extremely popular, leader of the band, even though John founded the band with Nick.
Yeah, neither of them look particularly happy. John's drugged out on something; Simon might be as well, although he wasn't known to do a lot of drugs. John, though... he's lucky he didn't die.
And do you have experience, theiren? I mean do you know personally the effects of coke? How can you say such a thing? They're both known for certain mannerisms, I've noticed that Simon picks at his nails, when he's a bit bored, and John has been said to scratch his underarm when he's asked something he deems a bit uncomfortable. Subconscious reactions I'm sure, but they still handle interviews and rough questions so gracefully.
Don’t underestimate that this song Wild Boys- that was written by Simon Le Bon- was about being gay and being proud. Simon Le Bon is a gay man who denied being gay including on their official website. This was a typical gay celebrity who used a woman and three daughters to shield his real identity in terms of sexuality. And for that I have no respect for this band at all …will never listen to the music again
@@daisie222 it’s pretty typical that many gay males in society, especially high profile ones would say that they’re bisexual just to be in keeping with main stream. But I respect your opinion, of course.

YOUNG JOHN TAYLOR MY GOD
I like a lot of their songs but my favorite has to be New Moon on Monday.
It’s not possible for a man to be more handsome than John was in the 80s.
Great great song

I love John Taylor's hair here. He looked better with just his natural color as opposed to the frosting, what we now refer to as highlights.
He always looks amazing, but the natural look is very nice...
