Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Hamlet simply looks comical when compared to the humanity of despair Andrew Scott imbues into the role. Just masterful. So affecting.

Right. I like Benedict Cumberbatch but his version of Hamlet was totally meh.... 😑😑😑
He pranced around like a kid with ADHD. Many people defended him saying it's a work of Shakespeare and melodrama is a part of it. But BC seems like even overdid the melodrama! 😂😂 I expected Hamlet's profound, brooding nature with passive-aggressiveness. But I didn’t get the vibe from him. He looked like a clown.
Yes, Hamlet often bursts into rage and is broken by his despair. This part is beautifully portrayed by David Tennant and Andrew Scott. Their versions seem more true. I personally loved Tennant's version more but it can't be denied how awesome Andrew was in this role.

Cumberbatch plays at being Hamlet. Andrew has become Hamlet

Cumberpatch is so mannered in his roles. Half the time, I can't understand a word he says. This actor, however is excellent in his roles.

Can we also appreciate the actress who played Ophelia? She did amazing! And Andrew is just mind blowing!

There have been many fine performances of Hamlet but Andrew's is, in my opinion, the most astonishing and moving of them all.
He brings a fragility to the role that I haven't seen before. You really see a young man driven to the brink of despair. Someone else mentioned his actions on stage as self-soothing and looking at him again, that makes so much sense. The way he avoids eye contact. The way his voice veers from a monotone to overwhelming emotion. He is feigning "madness" as they call it but he himself is on the brink of a massive mental health crises and here he is - taking it out on the person he loves the most 😢. Those of us who have been touched by depression know that only too well.
    It is a masterful performance.

I love how every line Andrew Scott says is said with intention, not rattling on lines with facial expressions. He makes understanding Shakespeare effortless.

The timeless genius of Shakespeare's writing is only fully realized to modern audiences when it is communicated with this level of intention and honesty.

he realized it was always meant to be performed in front of a live audience that would react to his emotions and his despair. Hamlet is so tragic. It moves me to tears to understand the prescient doom he felt in witness of the specter of his father and what that means for him on a grander scale.

Forget this was on my playlist during post night out drinks round the flat, and 9 of my friends stopped talking and just watched without talking. Went back to talking when the music started but based on the questions this four minutes held their attention and excited more interest than 3 years of Shakespeare at school. FairPlay to the actors.

The Almeida is a very small theatre. The "back" is about twenty feet from the stage.
