Saturn Shenmue looks amazing for its time, but I read the game was canceled cause the framerate was too low, it was very hard for the console to make a fluid gameplay, if they did released the game on saturn I can only imagine long loading times (which are also present on dreamcast) lots of slowdowns and pretty much a slow gameplay.
For Saturn it looks decent actually. Still, of course it won't hold up if you see it next to the dreamcast version, which indeed was a masterpiece back then 😏
Olivia Wonka Saturn was a Sega Console that was Release to quick... and was considered a Market fail near the end of the 90's. Its also a Planet... lol You should Google Sega Saturn. :P
Olivia Wonka It was the reason why Sega couldn't support the Dreamcast for very long and had to go 3rd party. That god damn console was handled so poorly...
NGL I almost cried when I saw the Saturn version for the fist time. Thats how amazed I was. And at the same time, sad that it never came to reality. But it was for the better to bring it to the Dreamcast. Back then Sega was amazing.
Man, the difference is brutal, and the Saturn version was using all the potential of the console. It clearly shows how big the evolution from the fifth to the sixth generation was, especially considering that the Dreamcast was the weakest of its Gen. Now the difference between last gen and now is nowhere near this massive.
JF_paes15 You can actually argue that the Dreamcast was superior in some ways to the later console, like the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. It was the first console to have internet capabilities, and was able to run on 480p, which was considered HD at the time. The competition wasn't able to achive HD til the 360 came out. It really was before its time, just like Shenmue.
Katsuya89 Well, yeah, there's that, but those features don't change the fact that in terms of raw power, the Dreamcast is placed last on that generation. Having superior or extra features doesn't make it the most powerful.
***** I'm not trying to say the Dramcast had shit hardware it was good and delivered some of the best looking games of that gen. What I wanted to say was that the jump from fifth to sixth gen was gigantic, and even with the weakest hardware of its gen, the Dreamcast was able to show how brutal the difference between the two generations were. The others just came jumping to the Dreamcast's defense like as if I was saying it was shit.
Many Saturn games did not even use the second CPU or VDP2. Most Saturn games did not use the SCU-DSP to its full potential. Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Sonic R are arguably the games best optimized for the Saturn, but it's unfortunate two of them came so late and Shenmue wasn't released at all. Compare them to the Saturn's rushed launch titles and they look a generation ahead of those games.
If the Saturn could have staid in the fight it would have been cool to have both a Saturn version and a Dreamcast version released. I would happily play both
The mistake my suzuki made in shenmue 1 is not keeping ryos father he should have waited awhile before killing him let players get to know him and stuff and then taking him out puts alot more feeling in his passing
This is footage from Shenmue II. Once you beat the game, you can access it from the Shenmue Collection. This is not in the HD Remastered version though, unfortunately
There are lots of developed-for-Saturn games on the Dreamcast. It was Sega's downfall. The Sega CD and 32x add-ons for the Genesis were really expensive and pretty limited. There were only a small handful of good games for these really expensive accessories. The price of a brand new console... When the Saturn came out, everyone was upset about the 32x and CD so it didn't sell well, and got a bad rep even though it was a great console. The Saturn wasn't out for very long before Sega was getting ready to release the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was a fresh attempt, but Sega had already killed off their user base. Without the CD and 32x, and with another year of development on the DC, the Saturn and Dreamcast would have been top-sellers.
As it stands the Saturn had an undeserved reputation, and the Dreamcast was a bit too weak to compete and needed a second analog stick at the very least. Yes Shenmue was going to be released on the Saturn, but the Saturn was killed off due to all the reasons above.
xxTimesxx12Twelve12 From a recent interview it was found that the Game Started Development around 1995 , by 1997 Sega had Given up on the Saturn and Started developing the Dreamcast. Im not sure how much work was done on the Original Saturn Port , but unless the video was only a Demo of selected Scenes , i guess it went pretty far. They had from 1997 to 1999 to Finish the 1st game on Dreamcast. Other games that suffered similar fate was Virtua Fighter 3. I wish Panzer Dragoon Saga was released to the dreamcast too instead.
geeknproud321 The Dreamcast was perfect , a cheap game focused game console , if Sega had money to keep going , im pretty sure it would had Outsold the Gamecube and Xbox , but not the PS2. Enough reasons for a Dreamcast 2.

Can someone tell me the name of the theme that is playing in the video?
For Saturn it looks decent actually. Still, of course it won't hold up if you see it next to the dreamcast version, which indeed was a masterpiece back then 😏
I find it interesting how Ryo doesn’t have a jacket in the Saturn version
I've played Shenmue all the way through at least five times, I've never seen the bit where Ryo is a little boy.
There's various triggers around the house. Examine the tree outside the dojo or the orange on the table in the kitchen.
FoundationsofPause These are really easy to miss.
FoundationsofPause there is one in the dojo too
That's part of the greatness of Shenmue. It can also show you more.
Did anyone see how Chai's face looked almost identical in both versions?
I may sound stupid but what is a Saturn?
Olivia Wonka
Saturn was a Sega Console that was Release to quick... and was considered a Market fail near the end of the 90's.
Its also a Planet... lol
You should Google Sega Saturn. :P
gabriel montreuil Ah! Probably why I didn't know what it was. Thanks for that. I'll Google into it 😝
A really cool gaming console from the 90's. :)
Olivia Wonka It was the reason why Sega couldn't support the Dreamcast for very long and had to go 3rd party.
That god damn console was handled so poorly...
Saturn couldve been great if it wasnt for Bernie Stollar fucking up management
+JF_paes15 But it did have fantastic software. The game library on it is unbelievably good when you think about how short it's life span was.
Sean Patterson I'm talking about hardware power, not games, can you guys stop changing the subject?
I would happily play both
Soon it'll be "Dreamcast VS HD Remaster". Get sweaty, Shenmue Dojo.
Kawayolnyo One can hope
Have you guys seen unreal 1 on Saturn?
Shenmue is impressive on the Dreamcast but it would have been amazing on the Saturn.
Ever time I see this game, it makes me sad. I also need my revenge on that bastard, Lan Di!!!
***** Hope you contributed to the Kickstarter! :-)
*****
Yes I did!!!
Lan Di can hide no more! The hunt is back on. :D
Makes you appreciate the DC versions even more knowing they are remakes. The DC versions look like major improvements
In always surprised how much late game content is in the Saturn version. It must have been very far along
I want to play the saturn version
The mistake my suzuki made in shenmue 1 is not keeping ryos father he should have waited awhile before killing him let players get to know him and stuff and then taking him out puts alot more feeling in his passing
How do you get your hands on this stuff? I'm curious. Is there a release on saturn i never saw?
This is footage from Shenmue II. Once you beat the game, you can access it from the Shenmue Collection. This is not in the HD Remastered version though, unfortunately
Saturn version looks great, but I wonder if it would run smoothly...
they put shenmue 2 on saturn? that doesnt seem like a normal thing to do
They had it on Saturn or was it a un finished game because they decided to just concentrate on the Dreamcast Version?
02:17 Ren is drunk on the Saturn.
O Ryo do Saturn é o Guts do mangá Berserk.. rs
Still pretty amazing for Sega Saturn.
By the way, this video seems to compare Saturn/XBOX, am I wrong?
Yep. It seems to compare Dreamcast and Saturn
wait so the saturn version go all the way to shenmue 2 ?!!#!
Xuiying looks so angry in the saturn version 2:31
Never even knew it was on the saturn
shenmue and ecco still look amazing the voodo 2 graphics card is awsome and you can still run todays games on 4 of them so good
So was Shenmue set to release on Saturn but Sega decided to release it on the Dreamcast instead? Or was there already a Saturn version out?
Yes Shenmue was going to be released on the Saturn, but the Saturn was killed off due to all the reasons above.
xxTimesxx12Twelve12 Shenmue started development before the Saturn even came out in Japan.
xxTimesxx12Twelve12 From a recent interview it was found that the Game Started Development around 1995 , by 1997 Sega had Given up on the Saturn and Started developing the Dreamcast.
It would have still looked better than pretty much anything on the Playstation
COME BACK SEGA!
Sega is dead but they made shenmue lll now
@@BruhMoment93_
How come SEGA is dead? They are making more games.
Ahem,,,,,,,,, Shenmue III is not from SEGA. They did not took any part of it.
@@BruhMoment93_ Sonic Mania, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Yakuza, Total War, Hatsune Miku, Valkyria Chronicles, Alien Isolation, Sega Ages, & the Sega Genesis Mini.
Also Shenmue III isn't from Sega, it was a kickstarter.
Nostalgia waves.
saturn version is like real 3D game on dos
I've never played the Sega Saturn Version of Shenmue. I certainly would like to if I had a chance.
Ryan Salazar it was meant to release first at Saturn but it never got released on it
Man.. I LOVE this game series so much...Such an absolute shame it hasn't continued. I truly hope they try kickstarter to continue the series. I want to finish this story and have my revenge! I want to go back and re-play the original.. freaking drive around on my forklift again.. throw darts and shoot pool and whatnot.. Brilliant game.
garvensman They did. And it failed.
***** Read the KS. It's not what you think. Sony lied when they claimed its exclusive. And its NOT coming to PS4, its PSN.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3
it has a case now so I believe it's physical now.
