I get what you are saying, the title was more geared towards the heritage units that came through though. I am a huge fan of this station too, I spent an entire day here and enjoyed every minute of it!
Loved watching your vid, it’s not that often you see Norfolk Southern trains run thru Alexandria, there is a small NS yard out at Van Dorn street and Eisenhower Ave.though. Great day for catching these trains :-))
I think the title is pretty fitting. We saw an SD40-3 right at the beginning of the rebuild program (and they are still rare now), we saw a VRE geep, all of which are now stored/sold, we saw 2 heritage units, and we saw the NS Local twice which was rare and is now being canceled this year. I'd say "rare" is pretty fitting. Davis
Thanks! There are quite a few that go through this area, it's been a while since I've gone to this location but I'd say there has to be at least 20-30 trains a day on this line, including Amtraks and VRE.
The locomotive, or General Electric (GE) ES44AH is a derivative of the GE ES44AC or Evolution Series 4400 horsepower with Alternating Current traction motors. The -AH is derived from that in that it has Alternating current motors with High tractive effort. Short explanation, the H means an increased weight to 216 tons, one steerable truck, TM3 adhesion control software, software that increases TE 6000 lb to 36,000 lb per axle, and a compressed air jet on the rail in front of front sander.
Must make you feel pretty good when the engineer's give you a Toot or two. Letting you know they appreciate your interest. And mine too. I don't live close to any major railroads, being two miles from the Beach, South of the Chesepeak Bay Bridge Tunnel, near the N.C. border. Great video's for us Railroad Addicts...without any Toys.
Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is the commuter ttain from Northern Virginia into DC. There are 2 lines: Manassas from the west and Fredericksburg from the south. Maryland's commuter rail is called MARC
Did you notice that when that passenger train left the depot 09:05 not one passenger who crossed the opposing track looked to their right to see if another train was coming. That is a good way to get killed by a fast train approaching.
dapster there is a yellow warning track just before the edge of the platform, this is for vision impaired people that can’t see, they are rubber with little welts (?) to let them know that they are close to the edge. The boxes are step stools for passengers to step down from or up since the Amtrak trains set up high off the ground.
I wouldn't really consider this rare because about 10-15 VRE and Amtrak trains pass through that station and the freight trains go by there just like any other tracks.... But don't get me wrong.. I loved sitting on both platforms and seeing trains go by when I stayed at the hotel across the street from that station.
Yes. They do that to avoid having to turn the trains around at the end of each run. + a northbound train is just a train returning that had already gone south.

Great catches and nice video. Probably only time we see Alexandria busy with railfanners. We were there also.
I get what you are saying, the title was more geared towards the heritage units that came through though. I am a huge fan of this station too, I spent an entire day here and enjoyed every minute of it!
Very nice, especially catching the heritage units. Great video!

@GenesisSanctuary Thanks! I know they were really painted nicely, my favorite out of the two was probably the Phase 1, but both looked really nice!
Agreed, it's a definite favorite of mine!
Nice catch of two heritage units! Trains P094 & P095 come through my town.
Very nice seeing the trains curve and getting cool shots
You should add amtrak 184 to the tags so it gets more views! Nice job!
I have watched trains here in years past, an it never fails to please. Also there are several restaurants nearby.
Thanks man! I agree, the differences between those locomotives are so miniscule that they are all the same to me!

What a great place for train videos. WoW
Great Video. You also caught two Metro trains in the background around 11:50.
And again....fabulous!
Beautiful work Robby, hopefully we'll meet up again soon!
Can't wait for Strasburg vid as well!
Davis
Thanks! I use a Canon Vixia HFR10 camcorder and Final Cut Express for the editing software.
@GulfWindProductions Thanks! Strasburg vid is uploading as we speak....
Thanks! My camera is a Canon Vixia HFR10.
No that was the SB Silver Star, the Capitol Limited runs on the Metropolitan Sub heading out of DC.
Wow, those VRE bi-levels are spotless.
epic intro nice job!

Nice video!!
Thanks I appreciate it!
Lol an airplane landing in your first clip. I actually went from that station to Florida in December of 2009 on Amtrak.
You forgot something. Amtrak 154 had an original steel nose!! Definantly a rare sight!
Love that Hi Hood and that horn
Nice catches there, Very Nice!!
Wow that was me getting on the train to go to Richmond with engine #156 leading. You can see I had the adidas duffel bag. That’s so crazy.
@naughtycanuck Thanks! The area seems really nice for sure!

Thank man. Appreciate the heads up
That is one nice catch!
Wow. Very nice video!

This is goooood Railfan!!
I LUV it!!!
Love those MP36 locos
Yep i do kinda
Childhood anyone?
They really need to get a D.C. freight bypass built. It seems like a huge security risk to allow a ton of freight trains to travel through downtown.
Where did you get the music for your Intro?
Thanks!
Great video.
You're welcome and thank you.
Nice catches! I subbed to your channel!
Thanks!
Was the train with the double P42's the Capitol Linited?
Very true!
I wonder if the NS engineer did an engine inspection to his engine around 3:30
Nice catches! What type of camera do you use and what editing software do you use?
Great catch!!! I subscribed.
what is Virginia railway express?, I'm from RI so I've only heard of MBTA and the T.
Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is the commuter ttain from Northern Virginia into DC. There are 2 lines: Manassas from the west and Fredericksburg from the south.
Maryland's commuter rail is called MARC
I swear this is the greatest intro I’ve ever seen also what intro song is this called?
Very Nice!!!
@wtrain78 Thanks!
Loooooove your video.
@SuperStarRendon Thanks!
I haven't seen any of my videos on that site....unless you're talking to doe26449?
Eastern Railfan Productions is what intro song is that called?
VERY COOL!
Did you notice that when that passenger train left the depot 09:05 not one passenger who crossed the opposing track looked to their right to see if another train was coming. That is a good way to get killed by a fast train approaching.
What with all those yellow step boxes on the platform?
That's standard on most train platforms. It's a warning that you're too close to a passing train, so you should stand behind it when a train passes.
Ken Bird the boxes are for the Amtrak trains, they are up to high and are needed for passengers to step down to get to ground level.

Thanks! I use the same camera!
Nice catches!! and great camera quality. what camera was that?
I saw 156 at union station on the diesel holding track Gate G track 23
@RRboyLEGOboy Thanks!
I do like your video
Technically that first one isnt a heritage unit yet. Maybe in the future
@joneau261 Thanks!
I was there during the summer and i saw my first ac6000cw
That NS Unit has a broken ditchlight
@CoasterFan2105 Good idea! Thanks!
Before the Amtrak passenger train leave you can hear the engineer relese the brakes!
Got it from my TV tech class in school.
if the train goes under the bridge its headed south,if its not, then its east?
I wouldn't really consider this rare because about 10-15 VRE and Amtrak trains pass through that station and the freight trains go by there just like any other tracks.... But don't get me wrong.. JP Davy he meant the heritage units and the high hood. Read description.
1:07 what horn is that on that CSX unit?
1st Gen K5HL
hints on being let on the plat form would be appreciated...
From the main station there is a tunnel to the other side
I'm going to chicago on amtraks lakeshore limited from buffalo depew station NY
what was that NS Local for?
On VRE does the engine or the cab car lead out of Washington?
Cab car leads going into DC and engine leads coming out of DC...usually
eu sou brasileiro e queria saber se essas maquinas, são tão altas como parecem ?
what type of loco is VRE V10
I think MP36
+Ultimate Railfan srry thinking of the wrong one i think it's a GP38-2
GP32-2
engineerpat 5290 it’s a GP39-2 (VRE calls them RP39-2s)
engineerpat 5290 our VRE trains are our commuter train, they only run during morning and evening rush hours into DC and out of Virginia.
Do all SB VRE trains have power in front...and all NB VRE trains have power in the rear?
Yes. They do that to avoid having to turn the trains around at the end of each run. + a northbound train is just a train returning that had already gone south.
I would be afraid to ride on a train that was Pushed!
so its busy there sometimes
By any chance erm, do you know who they are?
Real Names or anything?
I was in Alexandria last weekend. No time to railfan thi
something's wrong with the NS's ditchlightes
P54 looks like it's got itself a black eye lol
