yeah, and it couldve been longer. But the desires of the wider Swedish public were not heard out. No referendum, and not a single large parliamentary party voicing any opposition to a unilatiral application. Not forgetting that the gang violence here is insane compared to the rest of Europe, how is joining NATO going to make us any safer now that Russia is pointing a wider nuclear arsenal at us?
@@AntonBerglund88 Same shit with Finland. Sana joined NATO then immediately stepped down because it was a politically suicidal move she wasn't coming back from. Both countries were pressured into it for a long time and this war was just seen as a the right time to go through with it by relevant NGOs.

In Oct. 2021, 24% of Finnish adults were in agreement with NATO membership. In Oct. 2022, a year later, that increased to 85%.
In Jan. 2022 37% of Swedes voted yes towards NATO membership, and in July that same year that number increased to 64%.
The trends agree all the same. The Russian "liberation" of Ukraine, not to mention Putin's continued threats towards his other neighbors to the west have definitely contributed to not merely the Finnish or Swedish governments, but the people of both countries agreeing that mutual defense with the other countries of West Europe is the way to go.

I live here as an expat, there is a huge Russian community who invested large sums of money in the country as it did not join the sanctions. My guess would be that the ruling elites don't want to alienate potential investors

@@Usonan-Foderation2016 being neutral on paper doesn't equal being neutral de-facto. i had a conversation with a finn about it, and he said something along the lines of "well, we basically had a deal, that as long as russia doesn't chimp out, we don't join nato", and after my response of "well, did you have a similar "deal" with the americans, that as long as they don't chimp out, you don't join csto, and if so, why didn't you join it after they invader iraq and afghanistan?". he had no answer. through the whole 20th century both countries were pro-capitalist, pro-western, and nato would've protected them as their own members if they were attacked even if they never joined, simply due to cultural and economic ties. neutrality requires immense military and economic power in order to be protected, and neither finland, nor sweden had either. so, no, writing that you're neutral on a paper doesn't count.

Russia invades Ukraine to prevent them from joining NATO, but also makes Sweden and Finland join; ergo, basically isolating Kaliningrad.
It seems so, but above all, Ukraine is crucial to survive as a state in its current shape. Without it it is impossible.
I honestly don't know what the plan was here. Putin has tried to knock one country out of aligning with NATO and ended up with two more NATO countries on his doorstep, as well as isolating former allies like Armenia
@RMProjects785 those two were always defacto nato, its like Belarus chosing to make an alluance with Russia now, as if thats unexpected. The point is, NATO set foot on Ukraine. If Russia wins this it will be the first time NATO failed to get what it wanted.
@@abhabh6896 Finland used to not actually be there, it was neutral, and Sweden has always been de facto in NATO. in fact, it's the second one, because they had previously lost in Georgia against Russia and failed.

While they were both definitely aligned with the west, they were not integrated into NATO’s joint Defense structure and did not have much NATO military presence and probably wouldn’t have defended a non-EU NATO state. Essentially, the western alliance of Democratic states has been strengthened, whether as Russia is losing key allies. The CSTO Defense pact has fallen apart, same for the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Eurasian Economic Union. Key allies like Armenia and Kazakhstan have distanced themselves from Russia.
I think that the next couple months will more or less look like this- small Russian gains of entering small cities and towns, and capturing them later, while there are few if any visible changes to the map. But after a few months those changes will accelerate and the Ukrainian forces will break
Russia is dealing with major morale issues right now. They need to work those issues out before they can launch another major offensive.

better to be safe than sorry, Russia cant try nothing while they are preoccupied with Ukraine and Ukraine has shown that being neutral does not guarantee long term security, they had a deal with Russia in 1994 in the Budapest Memorandum they gave nukes stationed in there soil back to Russia in return for a safety guarantee which they since have obviously broken. Not to say you cant be neutral and safe but living near an ambitious, militaristic unempathetic dictator makes this very difficult

No, since Odessa is not in Nato Member territory, but Ukraine's while Russia would be condemned and probably get sanctioned again, it will not trigger article 5 of the NATO treaty.
