  • Thomas Moore has written numerous books on spiritual topics, including Care of the Soul, Dark Nights of the Soul, and Care of the Soul in Medicine. Here we discuss the differences between soul and contemporary academic concepts of the self, between soul and spirit, how experiences of depression and failure can bring us closer to the soul, and ways to cultivate a more soulful life. Thomas Moore is one of my spiritual intellectual "gurus", as a mother and as a psychotherapist and as a conscience evolving, as a human being... James Hillman, Moore and Shinoda Bolen have been my soul teachers, It´s great to share this passion with others.

I listened to this and knew it was important, but couldn't quite grasp it all. Like Moore's book Care of the Soul, I'll need to revisit it again, to get the gist of some of these crucial ideas.

I love Thomas Moore without reservations and consider him a true public intellectual in the older sense of that phrase.

I was quite surprised that dreams were not discussed as an illuminator of soul. However I find Thomas Moore one the few people who are able to express the value of soul in a profoundly secular age.

What a fine and enjoyable interview!! How thoughtful and friendly and full of substance! It was so nice to hear Thomas Moore interviewed by someone who has read widely and was able to ask substantial questions. This was a nourishing hour. Thank you both!!

Hi Sean Colemen, I listened to the end of the interview and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope John Tangney interviews Thomas Moore again for The Intellectual Diversity podcast.

I have listened to half so far. I am not sure what it all means but it is still better than listening to Ray Darcy. Has anyone made it to the end? To read Jung's collective works is impressive. I am (or was) reading Jung's Psychological Types for the second time and it is difficult enough but full of insights about what Jung called the 'type problem': introversion against extraversion. This hardly an issue these days as they waffle on about 'continuums'. Moore is an extravert, by the way.

Great interview. If you are in Siberia you should get in the mammoth tusk trade. Not much soul there but but some dough😉
