PALM OIL is DEVASTATING the RAINFOREST | LIVEKINDLY

  • Why is this plant-based oil devastating the rainforest? You may not know it, but many products you encounter every day can contain palm oil. Packaged snacks like chips and cookies contain palm oil, and household products like lipstick and toothpaste do, too. There is an increased demand on this cheap and versatile oil, and companies cut corners on sustainability to make a profit.
There are environmental impacts related to palm oil due to deforestation, as land is cleared for palm plantations. There are also impacts on wildlife - the Bornean orangutan, Sumatran tigers, rhinos, and elephants are some of the species at risk. There are impacts on indigenous communities and activists who try to protect the land.
How can we move forward from palm oil? Several countries have implemented bans, though experts warn that another land-intensive oil will simply take its place. Dr. Jane Goodall supports the sustainable production of palm oil, but it has to be done right. Governing bodies such as the RSPO provide sustainability regulations for palm oil production. There are also lab-grown palm oil alternatives that may soon take palm oil's place.

Absolutely!! My mother and sister as well, the 3 of us follow a vegan lifestyle as well as Palm free and zero waste. And is easy and cheap as air! So cheap!! We try so hard to avoid 100% palm oil and we've succeeded. People just watch "The Red Ape" , it is eye opener to the lies we've been told!💚 To all the Orangutans (and other innocent animals) in the wild I apologize🙏

Reminds of the Clash record - Should I Stay or Should I Go. If palm were banned then they start planting vegetable oil which takes even more land per litre. I stick to sustainable as far is ascertainable: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47201336. The Bill Gate's C16 sugar to oil convert maybe promising but what about sugar cane plantation deforestation?

I avoid buying products as best I can by (1) scanning the bar code with the PalmOilScanner app. (2) If the product isn’t in the database I do a Google search on whether the product is certified. (3) I there’s no way to verify the product I seek an alternative. I have no desire to participate in habitat destruction and unsustainable practices.

I’m Indian and India is the largest importers of palm oil. Almost every snack foods available here such as biscuits, cookies, chips and crisps contain palm oil. Four years ago when I turned vegan(I have been vegetarian prior to that) I came across an article regarding the devastation caused by palm oil cultivation and how it is the single, greatest threat to the survival of orangutans. Since then I never used a product or ate a snack containing palm oil.

That detail in the video about "every second of everyday, a section of rainforest the size of a football field is decimated" really puts it into perspective. All non sustainable palm oil products should be boycotted and banned, same for animal agriculture. It's destroying irreplaceable life. It only keeps on going if people give their money to it when they buy stuff. Little changes from everyone has a massive impact 👍😊

Avoiding it would be a good solution because it wouldn't just protect the habitat of animals it would also prevent the heart disease that vegans suffer from due to the high saturated fat content. Palm oil, coconut oil and shea fat are all high in saturated fat and aren't needed for us to consume.

Well stoping all together is an answer and it's probably the best answer if we don't replace the oil by something else.
As Jane Goodall correctly stated replacing palm oil by something else might mean more deforestation since Palm trees produces the most oil per acre of any crop by far. The only problem being : the place where palm has to grow.

What of cutting down trees, used for constructing house, chairs, wardrobes, cabinets e.t.c. ? Eating or using palm oil does not mean we encourage deforestation. All these are just part of human life circle which we must obey. So when a tree is being cut, we are encouraged to plant another, that is the circle but you did not address this.

other cooking oil needs 10x land to produce the same amount.
The problem is this is trade war and the west can't really compete with their soya, sunflower or other plant based cooking oil. So back in the 90s they're using health issue, but their campaign was dispelled by science and now suddenly this is an environmental issue.

    • @loanicastillo3327

You don't need to use a forest as a farm. There are other more appropriate lands in the U. S. A. Where you can have palm oil or any oil. And also in the rest of the world. In my country we have a lot of coconut but people let them get rotten in the wild because they do not know about its benefits. They consume soy oil instead.

Anyone with a functional brain knows that a balanced whole foods plants-only diet (+B12) is essential for stopping the horror of factory farming, for greatly curtailing our decimation of the environment, for the significant improvement of our personal health. And saturated fats, from both plants and animals, do not contribute to our personal health.

    • @loanicastillo3327

I think the most important is the number of children that must go from 0-1-2 (replacement population) and stop the mechanization and modernization of the countryside and so the migration to the Big cities. People living in the cities need to be reduced in number so that the country people can do ethic work, in the meanwhile to be a Vegan can help, but be careful how you replace meat... Rice and beans or lentils is something I can eat in the Dominican Republic. I eat meat around 4 times a month (a package of meat at the supermarket, like about a small chicken) and 1-1.25 pounds of cheese and a small mortadela. Sometimes I have a bar of butter.

@@loanicastillo3327 Protein is reasonably easy to get on a plants-only diet. My pot of beans includes: soy, red, black, split peas, lentils, chickpeas, and oat groats, cooked in order for cooking times. You can add 2 brazil when you consume beans for their high methionine, but not more due to very high selenium.
The oat groats compliment the protein in beans, but are overall healthier than rice. I add 1 to 1 and a half teaspoons of baking soda to the water before heating and that greatly helps with cooking time and making the beans more palatable. Use lowest heat possible and try to make sure the bottom beans don't get scorched.
I freeze most of it into half gallon soy milk containers for use over a few weeks. I use it mostly as a base for bean soup, and add turmeric, black pepper, rosemary powder, garlic, tahini, a dash of vitamin C powder, dried parsley, and whatever else.
I cannot go back to consuming animal products because I have grown to see their use by humans as cruel and exploitative.

Great video but unfortunately too much palm oil is found in processed foods including vegan butters/margarine so to avoid it you need to avoid processed foods. I am going to start doing this. Palm oil just like coconut oil isn't healthy due to the saturated fat which risks the chances of suffering from heart disease so as well as protecting the environment you will be protecting your health.

They can plant palm oil in the U. S. A. It is not like you need to destroy a forest for that purpose but we want it very cheap which is unfair as most of the palm oil is used to mass produce treats like Oreo and other trash food or useless cosmetics. Processed food like bread, cookies, cakes, pizza, donouts, fried food, some cheap chocolates, icecreams, whipped cream, body lotion, conditioner, lipstick...
Also you can use coconut oil. You have it in the U. S. A. But it is sold at a higher price. Coconut oil is not a cosmetic oil but a cooking oil.

Westerners destroy more forests than we do, at least we are still turning forests into palm forests, not turning it into deserts or large-scale farms
