  • While palm oil is known for being cheap and controversial, red palm oil is artisanal made and much more expensive. The vibrantly colored oil is made from palm fruits and can cost three times as much as its kernel-oil counterpart.
Despite the high cost, the handmade oil is a staple in West African households, used to make local dishes like jollof rice and banga soup. But what makes it different from palm oil? And why exactly is it so expensive?

This type of oil is common here in Brazil, especially in the northeastern part of the country. It completely changes the flavor of the food, it is delicious. Also beware that it has a tendency to leave red stains on wooden spoons, plastic containers and low-quality silicone spatulas

Quick correction, the press at 6:50 is a screw press. This uses only mechanical advantage through a screw to press the material. A Hydraulic press involves using fluid pressure to create a mechanical advantage.

I enjoyed watching! I've been eating red palm oil since I was a child. It's rich with a buttery taste, great flavor and an inviting smell. What's in this video is production of red palm oil at a certain scale for sale. Each family can make their own oil by cooking the fruits, pounding them, then filtering, then cooking the fiber-rich product. At the bottom rests the pulp in a soup that can be flavored and eaten with many side dishes and at the surface floats the red oil that can be collected with a spoon. The palm tree is a blessing to many African families. They grow everywhere very easily. Most trees are planted by birds eating the fruits and spreading the nuts. The fruit can also be eaten raw or roasted. It's a delicacy. 😋

I'm a tree climber in America, and think it's crazy that these guys don't have basic equipment that could make what they're doing relatively safe and dramatically less physical -with spurs and a proper harness, you barely physically exert yourself, especially when only climbing heights of 40 feet - it would also be pretty difficult to fall out of the tree because of the way an adjustable lanyard allows you to stay super close to the tree at all times.

The original palm oil trees did come from Nigeria courtesy of the UK not wanting to lose the valuable exports so they looked around for a colony with similar climate, stole a fee saplings and smuggled them out of Nigeria to plant in SE Asia.
Here's from the Malaysian government website itself and Wikipedia:
Palm oil trees were introduced to British Malaya by the British government in early 1870s as ornament plants from Eastern Region and The Oil River Protectorate, Nigeria, West Africa. The first commercial palm oil cultivation was done in Selangor in 1917 at Tennamaran Estate. In the early stage of development, the government focused on increasing its palm oil output by rapidly increasing the land area for the palm oil cultivation.

I kinda feel that further investment is needed to make harvesting and making these palm oils are needed. They can use methods used in regular palm oil manufacturers to make it viable to harvest them efficiently and safely, have commercial processing plants that can process it rather than relying on rust buckets and manual labor, then sell directly to the US and EU rather than relying on middlemen that make immense profits and pockets the difference.
If the farmers themselves get a higher percentage of the cut, they should be able to invest in better equipment

At the same time crisco began growing in popularity and expanding, heart disease also started to affect more and more people.
In 1900 there was like 10,000 deaths related to heart disease.
In 1910 there’s was around 50,000 deaths related to heart diseases and in 1980 it was like 800,000…

As usual, it's only expensive if sold in rich countries. If you really watched the video it was stated that a keg(30 liters) normally cost 30$. Thats 1$ per liter meanwhile US supermarkets sell it for 15-20$. See the difference? 🤔 and still wondering why they can't get any or better equipment.

Why spend time climbing when you can just use motorized palm oil knives? They're already available for commercial palm oil plantations, easy to use, eliminates the danger of climbing trees unnecessarily, and most of all enables them to harvest more fruit per day.
No money to buy the industrial solutions? Use a small scythe or large chisel tied to the top of a bamboo pole, just takes a bit more effort to pull and cut the fronds/stem, but you're still doing it from the ground level.
Harvested palm oil fronds a few times back when it was all manual, that was how it was done here in Southeast Asia. Save on stamina = more fruit harvested

First of all, commercial farming exists and they do harvest them with poles and other modern technology. Also this is a tiny eco friendly sustainable farm
Secondly: palm trees here are much taller than the usually dwarf inbred versions in SE Asia. Remember that
