Why Red Palm Oil Is So Expensive | So Expensive | Insider Business

- While palm oil is known for being cheap and controversial, red palm oil is artisanal made and much more expensive. The vibrantly colored oil is made from palm fruits and can cost three times as much as its kernel-oil counterpart.
Despite the high cost, the handmade oil is a staple in West African households, used to make local dishes like jollof rice and banga soup. But what makes it different from palm oil? And why exactly is it so expensive?

Why Red Palm Oil Farmers Risk Their Lives For This Precious Cooking Oil | So Expensive
funny how distributors justify the price of their products due to the danger and difficulty in producing their product and yet they pay these farmers peanuts.
They call that protecting their bottom line. So sad.
That’s kind of the point of these videos, to bring awareness to the people who are stepped on to bring people their creature comforts and signs of wealth and just how unsustainable these things are

This type of oil is common here in Brazil, especially in the northeastern part of the country. It completely changes the flavor of the food, it is delicious. Also beware that it has a tendency to leave red stains on wooden spoons, plastic containers and low-quality silicone spatulas

I enjoyed watching! I've been eating red palm oil since I was a child. It's rich with a buttery taste, great flavor and an inviting smell. What's in this video is production of red palm oil at a certain scale for sale. Each family can make their own oil by cooking the fruits, pounding them, then filtering, then cooking the fiber-rich product. At the bottom rests the pulp in a soup that can be flavored and eaten with many side dishes and at the surface floats the red oil that can be collected with a spoon. The palm tree is a blessing to many African families. They grow everywhere very easily. Most trees are planted by birds eating the fruits and spreading the nuts. The fruit can also be eaten raw or roasted. It's a delicacy. 😋

I'm a tree climber in America, and think it's crazy that these guys don't have basic equipment that could make what they're doing relatively safe and dramatically less physical -with spurs and a proper harness, you barely physically exert yourself, especially when only climbing heights of 40 feet - it would also be pretty difficult to fall out of the tree because of the way an adjustable lanyard allows you to stay super close to the tree at all times.

Im loving the recent focus on Nigeria insider has been doing, palm oil business is still a very good business compared tto others and most palm oil makers prefer the old ways its processed and harvested cause it keeps cultural pride and heritage. we can easily differentiate where te palm oil was made from just by te color texture smells and taste of it. some regions prefer it buttery, some smoky, some like it very dark and almost burnt while some like it congealed like fat, infact true palm oil produuction is almost like art. every region and culture especially in the south of nigeria as teir own expression and interpretation of what red oil should be.
on a side note though, yall need to try banga soup and starch made in southern nigeria from palm oil husks and oil pam berries... fun fun fun yum yum yum.

People don't climb the trees to harvest the palm fruit in southeast Asia. They use a long pole that has sickle.
The ones we have are shorter and usually cut down and replaced when they are as tall in the video. Maybe red palms only produce fruits when they are that tall (old).

@@shifukujonin6991you just don't know the history of palm oil in SE Asia. I'd suggest you look into it. The original palm oil trees did come from Nigeria courtesy of the UK not wanting to lose the valuable exports so they looked around for a colony with similar climate, stole a fee saplings and smuggled them out of Nigeria to plant in SE Asia.
Here's from the Malaysian government website itself and Wikipedia:
Palm oil trees were introduced to British Malaya by the British government in early 1870s as ornament plants from Eastern Region and The Oil River Protectorate, Nigeria, West Africa. The first commercial palm oil cultivation was done in Selangor in 1917 at Tennamaran Estate. In the early stage of development, the government focused on increasing its palm oil output by rapidly increasing the land area for the palm oil cultivation.

I kinda feel that further investment is needed to make harvesting and making these palm oils are needed. They can use methods used in regular palm oil manufacturers to make it viable to harvest them efficiently and safely, have commercial processing plants that can process it rather than relying on rust buckets and manual labor, then sell directly to the US and EU rather than relying on middlemen that make immense profits and pockets the difference.

just similar with factory.. factory they have extra step to purify the oil and remove the keratanoid compound
Man, I keep laughing when they kept saying red palm oil. It's crude palm oil 😂😂
What cruise
This brilliant documentary should be watched by all African governments. Africa cannot feed its growing population because of the lack of machinery, good roads, and electricity. The people are productive and hardworking, but the government are highly useless despite 23 years of unbroken democracy. Asia's success can be linked directly to investment in R&D, access capital and government investment in electricity, logistics and local security.
that's all very well, but instead of fleecing the government and people for this, what about fleecing some of the heavy profit makers instead, forcing safety at least.

better if africa remains innocent. Asian success is complete destruction of rain forests and nature. Better something like this never happens in africa
The language they speak sounds like it has a lot of English words/phrases incorporated in it? Or are they switching back and forth between English and their native language?
And he uses his "OWN" bear feet!! Shocking 😱
Dude looks like he could just rip the dang tree out of the ground instead.
Is kinda like "COLD PRESS OLIVE OIL"
interesting.....it look very different to our SOUTH EAST ASIAN palm oil.....
Ours are un-fremented.... and mostly are steamed and immediately filtered and bleached....
thus less RED and mild/to almost odorless oil
First of this is a tiny eco friendly sustainable farm so as little processing as possible is done to the oil so it retains its natural colour and delicate flavour.
Secondly: palm trees here are much taller than the usually dwarf inbred versions in SE Asia who've been bred to have high yield and thus completely bland.. Remember that
"Standart palm oil" is not palm kernel oil but clarified/processed palm oil... Palm kernel oil is like coconut oil and is more expensive than red palm oil
Note to self, start climbing palm trees! I want to shredded like Victor.

They didn't really mentioned where the red palm oil came to be!!! Because all i see its just regular palm fruit harvest into palm oil.. whats the difference, because i have that outside currently in my house here in S.E.A.. its just the same only the price...
On a side note, from the video it doesn't tell why the small farmers are not selling it to collection centre??. are they not welcome or mandatory market place for all this small farmers to just sell it to collection centre?? Liked i understand why they want to handle the finish products from harvesting to selling the final products but is it that much different in price ??
P&G created crisco in 1910, at the time lard was the main fat for cooking and heart disease was affected less than 5% of the population.
At the same time crisco began growing in popularity and expanding, heart disease also started to affect more and more people.
In 1900 there was like 10,000 deaths related to heart disease.
In 1910 there’s was around 50,000 deaths related to heart diseases and in 1980 it was like 800,000…
P&G funded the AHA for one reason only and that was the make the public believe seed oils were safe and it worked flawlessly and made them filthy rich in the process.
just need a long cutter that helps to harvest palm fruits from trees. motorized cutter is being used widely in Malaysia and Indonesia. I don't see much difference between crude palm oil vs red palm oil. crude means original form of palm oil without RBD (refined, bleached and deodorization). The FFA (free fatty acid) parameter will increase when fruit bunches are not being crushed/processed on time.

Aren’t those expensive
@@Mat14651stop being a troll
Those already exist in the bigger farms. This follows a small family owned/run farm that's all
If this oil is so expensive why the farmers can't afford to buy proper equipment to keep their climbers safe? Where does all the profit go? 🤯
The right question my friend, but usually not to farmers world wide.

The same reason children making iPhones, clothes, etc. are not rich but Apple is worth a trillion $ worth. The head never pays a lot to the workers because they are greedy and evil.
As usual, it's only expensive if sold in rich countries. If you really watched the video it was stated that a keg(30 liters) normally cost 30$. Thats 1$ per liter meanwhile US supermarkets sell it for 15-20$. See the difference? 🤔 and still wondering why they can't get any or better equipment.
Malaysia and Indonesia produce the biggest palm oil in the world... Many Asian people use that oil everyday to cook...They do not use olive oil or another oil for cooking.. especially for business...Palm oi is no1 choice because is more cheaper than the other cooking oil...But they do buy olive oil or another oil for cooking..but not used it so much like palm oil...for this african villager makes a business with it..the government should helping them with a good machinery..so they can produce it efficiently...to grow they business...
wonder if they ever thought of using a ladder

Was wondering why they climb up the trees, when ive seen the farmers in asia use long poles with a curved blade on the end. They just reach the fruit from the ground
8:35 why are you trying to hide the child labor in the subtitles when we saw kids working at the beginning of the video? It's tough to make a living with this so the whole family helps. You acknowledge this in other videos so why hide it here?
permission to take the video, my boss 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Should be good for fried rice
Can you do why cereal is so expensive cuz like kellogs is up to $7 now
Palm oil is life.
Dude Victor is a badass! Dang man.
Why spend time climbing when you can just use motorized palm oil knives? They're already available for commercial palm oil plantations, easy to use, eliminates the danger of climbing trees unnecessarily, and most of all enables them to harvest more fruit per day.
No money to buy the industrial solutions? Use a small scythe or large chisel tied to the top of a bamboo pole, just takes a bit more effort to pull and cut the fronds/stem, but you're still doing it from the ground level.
Harvested palm oil fronds a few times back when it was all manual, that was how it was done here in Southeast Asia. Save on stamina = more fruit harvested
First of all, commercial farming exists and they do harvest them with poles and other modern technology. Also this is a tiny eco friendly sustainable farm
Secondly: palm trees here are much taller than the usually dwarf inbred versions in SE Asia. Remember that
@@EarlGreyLattexeco-friendly sustainable label does not mean you’re stuck with dangerous ancient technology, bruh you just need long poles for taller trees, it was how they were done back when there weren’t any dwarf breeds available
that’s what i did back then, long poles of cheap aluminium or bamboo aren’t exactly uncommon
@@irvalfirestar6265 I thought it was obvious I was alluding to the fact it's just this farmer using this method and that most other farmers use modern techniques considering the sheet amount of palm oil consumed in West Africa.
@@EarlGreyLattex then his government isn't doing enough to educate them on how to be safer while harvesting the fruit, or maybe an NGO can assist with that
but never, NEVER say that it's just how things are done there, they deserve to have all the amenities of the modern world just like the rest of us, especially when all it costs is a knowledge sharing session or two and some long pieces of bamboo
I've got an African store a block from me and they sell red palm oil ... it's not cheap.
4:51 "thats not going anywhere"
I mean if you're going to regularly harvest them why not build a scaffold system
Here in Indonesia, we use a tool, its like a scythe but with very long stick so we dont need to climb and safe from the snake.
