I have forests exactly like that a few minutes from where I live, they're just a bit more dense. Pretty much anywhere near civilisation and boreal forest looks like this 😅
I think using ArmA as a training tool is a great idea (and great way to play the game), but if the intent is to get as realistic of an experience as possible, I think it would help to study conflicts a bit more and the capabilities of the opposing force. First thing I wonder is how is the plane able to get into the AO in the first place for the drop? Another thing people seem to miss out on when making arma missions is setting up capable enemy defensive and firing positions, not to mention minefields. I think it would be quite interesting having to take into account all the factors of insertion, enemy positions, enemy defenses, enemy surveillance, and trying to make the enemy as human as possible and anticipate offensive operations. Then what would be the enemy's response to an attack? I just feel like many operations in ArmA communities are very one-sided and don't take into account the enemy's capabilities, making them essentially sitting ducks.
I tend to agree. You made a lot of valid observations. Starting from the drop, the 3 klicks (didn’t feel like it) was a short walk for Alpha & Bravo. Similar to another reply in these comments, a number of players cannot sit still long enough for an equivalent RL engagement.
Agree with your points and a lot of them comes down to having AI as enemy. Most people who do milsim operations do co-op instead of pvp. Having an AI enemy is the least realistic part of these operations I think. I only did one pvp operation like that and we got our asses kicked compered to co-op, was way more fun and realistic.
@@DemonOfMirkwood I do agree, however the AI can be scripted and handled in ways to make them react at least a little bit more realistically. There are some commands you can use in the editor as well as setting up triggers to make AI situations more realistic, but yeah, they will never replace real players.
For sure! We're always balancing fun/realism. Ops like these are meant to train teamwork and comms primarily, but not anything in particular. Spicing it up with armor, CAS assets, and HALO jumps are all just to add to the fun sandbox elements.

I've learned a LOT about basic land navigation in Arma over the years. I use those same skills in the woods all the time now, so it definitely taught me something transferable. Call outs and team movement are another I've learned a lot about. Honestly, I think video games are a great medium for certain forms of training. Obviously the military agrees because I understand they're using heavily modified game engines to do the same thing for soldiers.
It's the other way for me, being good at orientation in real life and an outdoor "expert" made Arma very easy to play. No advantage on the shooting part itself though lol. But getting into mortars and artillery was relatively easy and tons of fun. An accurate splash is very satisfying, the longer range the better. And GPS is meh Don't need that unless you're blind - literally or metaphorically

Hey drewski, the goggles you have in the game are PVS-14'S. I can personally account for how bad they are. The new NVGS that we are issued are called NVG-40'S. They are White Phosphorus and are amazing for driving at night and late night patrols, you could walk into a fully lit room and not b blind.
Most PVS14 you can buy are way better than the ones we were issued, my issued NOD can't hold a candle to my personal NOD. I think it's just the same kind of bias as most mil folks have against the M9 for being so clapped out.
way back in 2018 I once used some very high quality White Phosphorus NVG that were in development and i could see facial features from around 25-30 meters away. in the future this technology is going to be even more amazing!

Awesome video, I’ve used an arma style system to train before, good value. When describing ammo situations we use black for out, red for low, yellow for some expended and green for topped off. Keep up the good work.
Hey Dreski, I see you were having NVGs turn off while using your scope. CUP Scopes like that have a 3D Feature to allow you to continue using your NVGs through the optic. Press Ctrl+Numpad Minus to toggle it. Just be warned, when its set this way, it doesn't properly save the scope in loadouts, so have it in the 2D setting for saving loadouts. I use it all the time, figured you might want it if you intend to use the optic in this situation again.
Or he can just use another optic, like ARCO or DMR... iirc those - for example - works with NV. They don't have integrated NV though. Most or all of the Marksmen DLC optics sadly won't work with NVG. Which sucks, cause they're pretty cool.
