There are plenty of people out there who dislike driving and have little to no interest in cars whatsoever. There's nothing wrong with that. But some folks here talk about it as if it's some sort of *sin* to not be a car enthusiast. That's the equivalent of a foodie constantly calling you out for eating a mere PB&J sandwich or Mac&Cheese for lunch. Or an audiophile giving you crap for not listening to lossless codecs. Or a techie making fun of you for not knowing how to build your own machine instead of paying for a pre-built one. Not everyone shares your hobbies. People need to get over it. I *love* cars and driving. Would I buy a Prius? Maybe if it was cheaper, since it seems to be an excellent commuter car. But there are plenty of others in the market who would *love* a Prius.

Chuck D I bought my 2017 Prius used. It is a great car. I am not bothered by criticism. All cars at some stage break down. There are cars that are money pits, once the mileage is over 100 000. I know of a Prius that has done over 250 000 and is still running.

Well, people like me that buy used cars still need these videos several years down the line, so thanks Matt. This is still too expensive for me, so I got a gen 3. If Toyota had said it was a phenomenal automatic transmission with a car wrapped around it, I’d have bought it ten years earlier. The ‘droning’ under hard acceleration is actually exactly the same as a normal automatic except the rpm is constant and there’s no ‘peak’ to be reached. Once you realise what Toyota has done, is to simply make the petrol engine run at about: idle; 1/4 speed; 1/2 speed; 3/4 speed; full speed; you realise it’s because petrol engines are quite poor in terms of what they offer. 80% of the energy put in, comes out as heat, you only get 20% out as power to a shaft. Petrol engines, make great boilers. The transmission has no cones, pulleys or friction faces to wear, the e-CVT is robust, not fragile and nothing like CVT at all, so it’s a misnomer really, in some ways. Doesn’t even have a ‘slush box’ or torque convertor ( sort of a liquid clutch) with its impellers. Much better. Never had an automatic that didn’t develop a fault by about 130,000 miles. This e-CVT only has an emergency clutch ‘in case’ and in normal use, there are only constantly-meshed gears. Keep changing the engine oil, every 7,000 miles max or less, keep changing the transmission fluid every 45,000 miles or less, and there isn’t too much to sweat about. This is the most reliable car probably, I ever bought. Sure, it still has to surpass my VW Passat auto 4-speed’s 193,000 miles, but that was a landmark era, before DPF’s strangled diesels. This car might fail, but it’s designed and built not to, and every indication is it’s one of the best engineered cars in the world. Original transmission idea was in Berkeley University USA, then GM bought it, then sold the patent to Toyota. It is basically a differential, as far as I can see - the three inputs/outputs are the giveaway - Motor-Generator 1, MG2, and the petrol engine, interplay to provide the final driveshaft power and speed. It’s a marvel. Take care all.
My dad's gen 3 has done 280k miles and still running solid. Some major service items such as hybrid battery replacement, water pump and brake fluid pump.
Its actually really useful for me, I got a dog and in days when its very warm outside he got a small fan attached to his cage which is power by that 12v socket.

We got our first snowstorm of the season this morning, and i had to choose either the '99 RAV4 AWD or the 2013 PlugInPrius to make the 35 mile round trip into town and back. Road were slick, snow covered with ice under. With dedicated winter tires (Michelin IceX) traction wasn't a problem. On the drive, several single occupant full sized 4x4 pickups roared by me on the interstate, and I'm sure their drivers thought "THIS is the reason I drive a pickup truck, poor Prius driver!" I also had a 1 ton Silverado 4x4 I could have drove, 15 mpg. The RAV4 gets 25-27 mpg, the Prius got 64 mpg on the trip. Leaving several dollars in my pocket over the 1 ton, that's why i drive it. I feel like a dumb ass, not macho, driving a 1 ton flatbed just to haul my skinny ass down the road, (it only comes out of the shop to WORK, not serve as personal transportation) the Prius makes me feel like I'm getting the most bang for my driving buck.
It's one if not the best for fuel economy and the environment. I'd have it in my garage next to my expensive cars as a reliable ride around the city or long distance.
Apart from it looking hideous, it is pretty impressive car.. 86mpg, big boot, nice space inside are all pros. If I wasn’t a car guy, I would go right ahead and buy one.
aufdemtrip are you stupid or something? What does it have to do anything with being a car guy? Am I supposed to only like sports cars to be a ‘car guy’? FU all. That’s nonsense.
I' am totaly happy with the car. Before I had a Audi A4 diesel power from 2008. It is very cool to drive electric with the prius, and I like very much the fact it produce less polution than all other cars (except 100% electric cars). So many people dies every day because air polution... but it seems that no one thinks about it, most people want spotive cars or big fat SUV Trucks... First spotive cars cost you double the price for maybe some minutes you are faster... And think about it driving faster is more risky... Than many people think SUV is much saver that is not true they are only about 20% heavier but they have less street control than sedans... And when everybody would drive heavy cars it would be even more dangerous on streets... Spotive cars and SUV for city that's the stupity of humanity... Prius is the best car for humanity !
My current 2017 Prius has a top end of 115 MPH. My 300 HP V-6 Mustang computer shuts off the gas to the motor at 107 MPH. Yep, My Prius is faster than my Mustang.
The bar across the rear window is exactly the right position to cover following cars headlights. My gen 2 1.5 is a little more noisy but returns 62 mpg going to Cornwall from E Anglia. My Gen3 is much quieter (other than road noise) and will do 70mpg. Both have been "bullet proof" for reliabilty They just work. Gen 2 is 10.5yrs old and battery still top notch.
Hey, E class driver here. I'm not sure if the U.K. Just got this car or what, but we've had those for a pretty long time now, and I got to rent and drive one for a couple of days, gotta say, I'm surprised! It's shockingly ugly (though not anywhere nearly as bad with the larger wheels) and everyone just kinda hates Priuses, and I understand why it's so easy to do exactly that. But it's actually quite a charming, pleasant car to drive. It's probably the best econobox I can think of all around. It's VERY easy to drive, it's quiet, comfortable, not huge but spacious enough for most situations - the perfect size for a city car, it's got a surprisingly punchy engine and it's STUPIDLY fuel efficient. I'd definitely rather pay a little extra and have a Prius than something like a Focus, a Corolla, a Mazda 3 or a Civic (which is a car I wouldn't consider any prettier than the Prius). With those cars, I don't think it REALLY matters what it looks like in the first place, you're not fooling anyone either way, everyone knows you're driving a cheap, compact econobox. Edit: I had no idea it had heated seats, that button's position.... ugh
TsLeng Ugh, that's a sore spot for me, I REALLY like the GS, there's something about it that just feels right, I definitely prefer the interior over the one in the E Class, but objectively speaking it just doesn't ride and handle quite as well as the E Class, it's RWD only, and it doesn't come as a wagon.
Jesus Christ apparently the GS350 (also has AWD!) which is not sold in the UK handles very well. At least according to USA based motor journos. But then , half of what motor journos say is probably shite anyway so I dunno.
TsLeng yeah, but AWD isn't a deal breaker for me as it's mostly just rainy where I live, but I'd rather have it than not, and it sucks that you can't get it on the the top spec model unless it's the F sport, which I didn't want (comfort is a higher priority for me, as I do A LOT of highway/city driving and I just need something to make it all a bit easier). And yeah, the GS handles really well! It's rock solid on the road, but so is the E Class. Neither of them is a barge, but if there's one thing the E Class absolutely aces, it's ride comfort. What people say about it gliding over bumps is 100% true, it's "what the fuck" level of comfortable with the optional air suspension. It's just something the GS doesn't do. Also, the Burmaster sound system!!!!!! Holy shit, it's great! Why don't car journalists EVER talk about that?! It's significantly better than the Mark Levinson one in the GS. What ultimately was a deal breaker for me though, is that it doesn't come as a station wagon. I needed a car that can carry a lot of shit and thought about getting some kind of an SUV at first, but figured that a station wagon would be enough.
Jesus Christ it's a shame of the AWD GS can only be had on the F Sport. Not everyone wants to race around at max G force lol. And no wagon which is a shame.
Mat needs a crash course on Toyota HSD. It has 2 motors. Not a belt CVT, and it is seamless because most of the time it is driven by one of the motors while the engine makes electricity via the other motor.
I never understand why people hate on it so much. It's a really reliable, comfortable, relaxed, economical way to transport people. It's not fast, stylish or whatever but it isn't meant to be - that's not it's job. About a bazillion minicab and Uber drivers know this. It may not be right for you - but doesn't make it bad, and probably it's perfect for someone else.
Tengo un 2018 y estoy encantado con el, yo lo defino no como un auto, sino como un objeto de transporte del punto A al punto B y me parece maravilloso.
Leonardus Giovanno don't insult the multipla. At least that was a decent (honest) car that could fit 6 in. And was that ugly, it was sort of decent looking. A bigger set of wheels with LP tyres, would help this out somewhat.
The Prius is a perfect car for a family of four people who need a practical car that is economical, easy to drive and is cheap in maintenance and fuel. Whilst it's hideous, the 2019 Prius (the one now sold in Australia) looks a little bit better, it is still a good car for those who don't really care that much about what they drive.
The Prius should be applauded for its technology. Any other machine people want efficiency and Prius is amazing with gas. Getting 50-70 mpg doesn't get old.
I don’t see why everyone hates this car, it looks good (better than the old Prius) it drives good, it’s good for the environment, and it’s just a car that people waste their time on hating. Overall it gets the job done and it doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets
We had three Prius cars, the HV batteries failed in two of them at around 180k kms or about 110k miles. Any money we saved on fuel costs was given back to Toyota when we had to buy two new batteries. I was Toyotas biggest fan but I would never buy another one now..ever. We sold the last remaining Prius soon after.
The hate that Toyota and prius gets is just classist and pathetic. Car enthusiasts forget that NOT EVERYONE IS A CAR ENTHUSIAST. Some of us just want a car that is RELIABLE, will last forever with minimal maintenance besides the basics, isn't a gas guzzler is economic on our wallet and in the environment Like if you hate the prius don't get one then?? If you want a fancy car that can go 0 to 100 mph or can be modified and has all sorts of cool shit then get a different car?? Like sorry the prius isn't up to your sports car or trucks standards lmao but it's not a sports car or a truck. It's a prius Anyways I love them and I can't wait to get rid of my kia in a year or so and get a prius
Watching this in January 2024. I really didn’t like the design of this when I first saw it many years ago. But now, well I really do like it. It’s very smart and refreshingly different. One thing that remains the same though. In all the places that really matter, no other manufacturer builds a car as well as Toyota.
It has to look like a shed so they can hide all the hybrid gear away under the floor. That's why the headroom in the back is so poor for such a large car.
The Prius is an engineering marvel. I ride a BMW motorcycle for fun. I loved my Mini Cooper for the handling. I like my Ranger for hauling. And I love my Mazda5 stick shift cause it's the only minivan you can get with a stick shift. But my 06 Prius is probably the best car I ever had. First maintenance (other than oil, tires, and some tail light bulbs), was at 182 thousand miles! That's right. At 182K, I finally spent $220. For front brake pads, and had the serpentine belt replaced. That, while enjoying the savings of 50 mpg. It's not the zero to sixty that is impressive, or the feel of the manual transmission, or the sound of a V8. It's the beauty of well engineered reliability and fuel economy. And I get enthusiastic about that. My motorcycle is more fun, but burns more gas than my car!
Hmm, looks like UK is missing some bits here and there. I got the Prius and it come with lithium battery, which is more efficient and can hold more charge as well as recharge faster, not to mention weights less than the nickel one. It has a two step false floor in the boot which eliminates the ridge of the rear seats as well as a 12V socket. Oh the ISO fix covers are attached unlike the ones in this Prius. Also for tires I suggest the Dunlop Sport BluResponse 195/65 R15, they are soft and can absorb tiny bumps as well as quite.
No. It's the standard, when I went to the dealer I asked if it was possible to get the car with lithium battery and certain options that weren't shown on the Toyota site. Surprising it was possible to make a special order, it took four months to arrive. If I were to order a Prius like the one shown in the site (plus the options) it was available within a month. For example; The "ready" Prius didn't have the false floor, the lithium battery, Pitch & Bounce control, Illuminated side steps and four other things.
Andrej Kostovski - everyone hates it so (when one sheep goes away from its group all the others go after it, and this guy is one of those) - it is not the worst or ugliest car ever - but its owner community of fake ecology people is cancer
KRISTIJAN 5112003 yes you are right.. if you wanna something economical with a decent boot and space in the cabin its allright..and its not that ugly its a huge step up from the old prius
Rianti Download for a good reason. And Mongolians love it too used from Japan. That's for a reason too. It's not to impress imaginary people but because it's a very good car. An excellent car. A car to drive efficiently and reliably, in comfort.
😂😂 best comm ever . True man , why the fuck would someone buy a piece of shit like this instead of a propper car ? You have no fun driving , ne pleasure , it’s uggly as fuck inside and out ,etc etc! For what? Fuel economy? You pay 00000£ on it and then you want fuel economy? People are retarded .
i really don't like the interior at all and the exterior hasn't been a huge development either, if it was an Audi everyone would call them out for being conservative and boring but as it is a Toyota everyone seems to be fine with it...
I will just get a 1991 Honda Civic as my daily which has a 1.5L engine power steering, auto transmission, A/C, 4 doors and a decent boot. It's also light on fuel, reliable, cheap to maintain and cheap to buy.
I am an uber driver and I have change the Prius for a diesel Skoda . It is much bether on the highways. It is not so economical but in the end of the day you are not so tyred .

Toyota prioritized the aero efficiency on this car but little did they think about that rear wiper at 1:26 causing a brick's drag.
Apart from it looking hideous, it is pretty impressive car.. 86mpg, big boot, nice space inside are all pros. If I wasn’t a car guy, I would go right ahead and buy one.
Sushil Choudhari wtf? I’m ‘a car guy’ and I own one. You people are so full of shit.
MakeMeYoursBitch is it your daily driver and you have a other fun car for the weekend? If not How can you be a Car guy?
aufdemtrip are you stupid or something? What does it have to do anything with being a car guy? Am I supposed to only like sports cars to be a ‘car guy’? FU all. That’s nonsense.
If my name was Mohammed, I'd buy one as well.
What's actually preventing you from getting one if I may ask?
Is it what people in the community think about it?
Prius is just a car, no drama
My current 2017 Prius has a top end of 115 MPH. My 300 HP V-6 Mustang computer shuts off the gas to the motor at 107 MPH. Yep, My Prius is faster than my Mustang.
You said wha
@Daniel Bi why because everyone said so?
The bar across the rear window is exactly the right position to cover following cars headlights. My gen 2 1.5 is a little more noisy but returns 62 mpg going to Cornwall from E Anglia. My Gen3 is much quieter (other than road noise) and will do 70mpg. Both have been "bullet proof" for reliabilty They just work. Gen 2 is 10.5yrs old and battery still top notch.
Interesting comment. I am considering a Gen 2/3 Prius, I will also be doing long trips all over the UK with it. Glad to hear you've had no problems.
Edit: I had no idea it had heated seats, that button's position.... ugh
Jesus Christ most people who hate don't get it like you do.
Since you got an e class, next time try the lexus gs450h. Should be good.
5 annoying things:
1) just look at it
2) It is a hybrid
3) It exist
4 this should be not toyota
5) People still buying this
I never understand why people hate on it so much.
In the first place, the car isn't even meant to cater for those haters. It's is meant for efficiency, not performance.
The best Car Review Channel, I really like the way Matt does it, with the lot of feel and warmth. 👌
Tengo un 2018 y estoy encantado con el, yo lo defino no como un auto, sino como un objeto de transporte del punto A al punto B y me parece maravilloso.
Lee Pei Ching is fine but he is confirmed
The Prius is incredibly practical and economical! The only issue is the exterior design
Get a silver one with black wheels
I bet most of the dislikes will be from Car Throttle members.
definetly, yeah
Is that you Ethan?
Or maybe people with the gift of sight
Hahaha damn right!
I liked the video, and i am a car guy, but thats only because the video was good, not the car.
The next Fiat Multipla?
Leonardus Giovanno yeah
The multipla looks like a ferarri f40 compared to this.... thing.
Leonardus Giovanno Not that hideous shit-box!
Leonardus Giovanno don't insult the multipla. At least that was a decent (honest) car that could fit 6 in.
And was that ugly, it was sort of decent looking.
A bigger set of wheels with LP tyres, would help this out somewhat.
Leonardus Giovanno 😂😂👍🏻
2:53 *QUIRK*
Matt don’t do this to me. I can only handle one Doug.
That car is so good you can feel it.
This is the best looking Prius, I like it even better than the current one.
I think this prius looks beautiful. Don;t know why people think it looks ugly.
2:18 Why do you always complaint about the ridge in the boot? Can't one just load the luggage through the side doors?
One can, but only with difficulty when parked in a narrow garage or other tight spot. So some will be bothered, but others won't. De gustibus, etc.
Thankz4sharing Good point
The Prius should be applauded for its technology. Any other machine people want efficiency and Prius is amazing with gas. Getting 50-70 mpg doesn't get old.

carwow lmao
NANI WHY NO FUDGE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???
I ABSOLUTELY love the Prius.
LOVE YOUR REVIEWS, thanks
do more reviews on KIA, HYUNDAI, TOYOTA
You can’t hate Prius because it serve its purpose its economical and cheap
7:26 - "why are we not worthy"
I don’t see why everyone hates this car, it looks good (better than the old Prius) it drives good, it’s good for the environment, and it’s just a car that people waste their time on hating. Overall it gets the job done and it doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets
I actually like the Prius
It's ugle it's dumb over in world
Despite the horrible gear selector and gauge cluster, its a quite nice car!
Some of us just want a car that is RELIABLE, will last forever with minimal maintenance besides the basics, isn't a gas guzzler is economic on our wallet and in the environment
Like if you hate the prius don't get one then?? If you want a fancy car that can go 0 to 100 mph or can be modified and has all sorts of cool shit then get a different car?? Like sorry the prius isn't up to your sports car or trucks standards lmao but it's not a sports car or a truck. It's a prius
Anyways I love them and I can't wait to get rid of my kia in a year or so and get a prius
Watching this in January 2024. I really didn’t like the design of this when I first saw it many years ago.
But now, well I really do like it. It’s very smart and refreshingly different.
One thing that remains the same though. In all the places that really matter, no other manufacturer builds a car as well as Toyota.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, BUT are they trying to make it look like shit ???
Theodore Vasilopoulos yes they are, so pretentious little fucks can stand out from the crowd
that statement dosent apply to the prius
And that’s why my friend bought a Prius C.
It has to look like a shed so they can hide all the hybrid gear away under the floor. That's why the headroom in the back is so poor for such a large car.
I love it. It’s amazing, the perfect drivers car. As a car enthusiast I really want this car
David Micevski no car enthusiast likes a Prius they get real cars!
@@blueeyedracer4990 Damn, it seems like most car enthusiasts are so insecure. Good thing I'm not into cars anymore
see? You stink more than his gym teacher
@@blueeyedracer4990 You're so insecure its pitiful.
WHY haven't you done a 2020 "Prius Prime" review?
The reason why Toyota uses NiMH batteries in certain markets is because of colder temperatures.
Dream car, I wish I get the chance to drive such a car one day!
Mr Greg let me guess. You are a hipster.
the fact a PRIUS is your dream car is just sad
someone Dude... sarcasm is a thing...
i've seen someone being serious about 20k$ as dream car before
can't tell anymore ..
someone That's sad...
My dad is getting a new Toyota Prius 2017 for taxi lovely yaaaaaay
Hey Mat, you're not supposed to use the parking brake with your hand. Try it with your foot and trust me, it is very easy :)
Dimitris Kepenos I think you have a plug in hybrid
I like my ‘12 Prius V better 😂. Travelled 1000kms for $25 AUD of fuel 🤔
is the hood moving up and down or is it just me ? 7:52
Its you, the camera was shaking thats why.
There are more pleasant things in life then driving this car, like getting tuberculosis or get hit by the car.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mark i dont like it and i wouldnt like to own one but tell why do u hate it so much? tell me 3 good reasons?
Andrej Kostovski
- everyone hates it so (when one sheep goes away from its group all the others go after it, and this guy is one of those)
- it is not the worst or ugliest car ever
- but its owner community of fake ecology people is cancer
KRISTIJAN 5112003 yes you are right.. if you wanna something economical with a decent boot and space in the cabin its allright..and its not that ugly its a huge step up from the old prius
the only decent pone is the prius v
I was impressed with how much head room there was when I got into a toyota pruis and a peugeot when I got an uber for my first time
The no.1 best seller car model in japan
Rianti Download for a good reason. And Mongolians love it too used from Japan. That's for a reason too.
It's not to impress imaginary people but because it's a very good car. An excellent car. A car to drive efficiently and reliably, in comfort.
It’s so ugly
GT-R LEXUS japanese awesome car
@@blueeyedracer4990 such a beauty
@@blueeyedracer4990 i think so too
bro i got 1 more con for u of 2017 Priuss... How do u open the rear trunk from inside the car...??
I actually LOVE this version body style. Looks dope!
*I am just looking at the toyota website and it says for business edition 2018 model £29000*
I bought a E63 AMG last month...It was to noise, fast and pretty so I have now just sold it for a brand new Prius! Can't wait to save the world!
Christian mrclep cool story bro.
Christian mrclep yeah right!
Just wait for the people with no sense of humor to come in lol
U ain't Savin nothing m8
😂😂 best comm ever .
True man , why the fuck would someone buy a piece of shit like this instead of a propper car ? You have no fun driving , ne pleasure , it’s uggly as fuck inside and out ,etc etc! For what? Fuel economy? You pay 00000£ on it and then you want fuel economy? People are retarded .
Why everyone mentions looks as a negative? I was attracted to this car due to looks. It is beautiful car.
What the fuck is this
Vanessa Oelmann it's called shit
This car has autism
whats wrong?
bugz1591 your not a car guy
i really don't like the interior at all and the exterior hasn't been a huge development either, if it was an Audi everyone would call them out for being conservative and boring but as it is a Toyota everyone seems to be fine with it...
I love Toyota Prius
At first, when he called the Uber and the car came, I was looking for a driver and didn't find any. And then I remembered it was the UK
I will just get a 1991 Honda Civic as my daily which has a 1.5L engine power steering, auto transmission, A/C, 4 doors and a decent boot. It's also light on fuel, reliable, cheap to maintain and cheap to buy.
Matt you king of reviwes👑
Dario you king of spwelling 👑
na bro
I am an uber driver and I have change the Prius for a diesel Skoda . It is much bether on the highways. It is not so economical but in the end of the day you are not so tyred .
I don't really find this car ugly, I think it's modern and futuristic and I kind of like it.
The Adjustable center piece for the cup holder is for a cup with a handle
this review is perfect. mat is awesome
So true
You may have been a bit too heavy with the brakes at 5:20 Matt because you can see the emergency hazard lights flash when you brake
Adjustable cup holders suitable for mugs as well
It's one amazing car!
I wish I could have the money to buy it.. 💵💵💵
The droppable divider between the cup holders is to accommodate the handle of a coffee cup though I think it's a little gimmicky as just leaving it out wouldn't change how they function
i'd race it. looks pretty fun to race it, too.
Adjustable middle part of cup holders... I mean I am not an expert, but some cups have handles! Japanese think about everything. Which is nice, I like that attention to details.
2:46 I wish uber drivers would obey me like that.
tarun akumalla 😂😂
If you squint enough , you can see the last generation Celica in there....I rather the old Celicas design tbh
LOVELY CAR!
@0:14 .. New car but why that brake noise?
Matt stole a Prius from an Uber driver, report him to the police! XD
Can you do the prius prime as well? I hear that it was some more upgrades over the normal prius…
Those who can't afford this car, they will say bad stuff about the car 🤞
Adjustable centre part in cupholder is for mug handle should you have one.
anyone noticed the qi wireless charging pad just as he took the twix away?
I thought he would have mentioned it..But no..
Haahha!! LOVE the subtle humor! Please never change
