I wouldn't exactly call all of that rust chunks. It is solidified chunks of the foam padding coating the inside of the ear cups and the speakers.
I am actually restoring 2 helmets right now a HGU-47 (V4) from a P-3 Orion and a USN SPH-3 B/C.
fun fact....a VR headset fits under a sph-4.....just saying heh, Warthunder gets pretty interesting
