Writing a letter or email to your sponsored child is easy and rewarding! It’s a great way to stay connected to your child and their family.
Your letters show a child that someone in Canada cares for them - children love receiving mail from their sponsors. It’s an amazing journey getting your letter to the remote areas where children live.
The journey starts when you put your letter in a mailbox or hit send on an email. Your letter is sent directly the main World Vision Canada office in your child’s country. But that’s only the beginning.
In the office, Sponsorship Operations sorts the mail by your sponsored child’s name and ID number. That’s why it’s so important to include their name and ID number on the back of the envelope and on any letter or card you include inside. This sorting can take time - globally, World Vision supports over 4 million children in 57 countries.
All mail is opened and checked to make sure only appropriate items are delivered to your sponsored child. For example, cash is not acceptable - but small gifts like stickers, photos or pencils are great.
Acceptable gifts are set aside while local volunteers translate your letter. Then the letter is recorded in a database and reunited with the acceptable gifts you sent.
Then, all of the mail for a specific community is sent to closest local World Vision office. It will be checked one more time before being given to a World Vision worker in the area where your sponsored child lives.
Many communities are remote, so this last leg of the journey may be difficult or take time. Once the worker arrives, they personally deliver the mail to your child’s home. If the child is old enough, they will read your letter on their own. If not, family or the worker will read it to them.
Then, it is your sponsored child’s turn to write you back. Their letter will take the same, but reverse, journey back to Canada.

I am so pleased that email is now available to keep in-touch with the child I sponsor. I usually wrote a letter but I think this will work much better. Thank you World Vision.

How wonderful it is that we can now use this email. Who would have thought this would happen to children so far away. Thank you World Vision for all the
amazing hard work you do for children so less fortunate.

Does anyone know how long it takes for your sponsor child to receive the letter? Weeks or months? I just sent an email to my sponsor child a few days ago... but she lives in Israel, not too far from Gaza...

I'd like to know what is "appropriate" to send. I've sent things like a Tshirt, crayons/markers, hair bands, socks; all will fit into a 9 x 6 envelope. Don't know if my child receives any of it, so will stop if it's not likely. I know that ultimately some child will get these things, which is fine too.

I have sent a Tshirt before, and the next annual photo that i got my sponsored child was wearing the t shirt. I was touched to see that.

Oh... What about $ that I sent? I didn't know it wasn't appropriate til I watched this video. Too late I mailed it already. 'Twas just a little amount but I'm wondering if what will happen to it? Any answer please? Thank you.

Yes this is true. I read on the Canada Post "We do not recommend sending cash in the mail and cannot compensate you for any cash lost in the mail." www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/personal/support/helpcentre/sending/restricted_items.jsf;CPO_JSESSIONID=wXS2T1HcJ8pvjBPG3NnzczbqyhGGWRl2m12Tx11JfnkRPpzvH557!2003638918

+Cicily Magle Probably a little late now but you can send a special gift. Min 100 and max 200. 100 percent goes to child and family and they can choose what they need the most. Then a reply is sent to you to show you what they got. I do it and it is amazing what my child got with 100 dollars!

I've shared photos of my sister and I with my sponsored child. Did you know you can also use your online account to send an email to your sponsored child -- you can also upload a photo.

Wow lots of Questions and no answers you think maybe the folks at WV should be informed of this and someone could officially answer them. I'll share my thought and try but I am not officially a WV worker so what I say may not be true. I have been a sponsor for over 20 years and have encountered a lot of these issues my self I sponsor 6 kids so I have a bit of experience writing and even made a visit to one of them.
S Haq: Like the video says it depends on the country I sometimes receive return mail from kids within 2 months but the normal time would be closer to 3-4 months.
Cicily Magle: The cash you sent may of gone into petty cash at the WV office in the country you sent it to. Or it may of slipped into someones pocket too. You gota remember most places that WV operates are dirt poor so the people who are translating in these offices may of taken it. But the good thing is that in the end some really poor person benefited from it so either way you helped someone out. My guess though is that it went into petty cash.
Karen: Yes I think that this will work much better in one sense as I have received returned mail that was postmarked as a wrong address in the country that I sent it to even though it was correctly addressed. On the other side of things nothing seems as special to me as receiving a hand written letter and maybe a trinket or drawing made for you by someone who is thinking about you.
Charmie: For sure your getting pictures every year. The kids I sponsor tell me how happy they are to have my photo and some of them have said my picture is stuck on the wall of there home or on a shelf with pictures of there loved ones.
Darcy: I would assume that it is checked in the country of origin and in the destination country because both offices want to make sure it is appropriate. You know some things we may think are OK or no problem in Canada may be a big deal somewhere ells.
Cindy: I think as long as it is small and not really worth to much it is fine. I have sent things like hair ribbons, balsa wood airplanes, small glass beads and fishing line, and activity books. usually the postage is more expensive then the items I send.

why does it need to be checked a second time?
