I can hope and pray that those celebrating Thanksgiving had a great one this year! For those in other parts of the world, I can hope and pray that you and yours are blessed with good family time as well.
A special thanks to Mr. outinthewood for the opportunity to have this saw for an extended period of time,,, and carté blanch for the most part on the build. Mr. Speed And Marine for allowing me to bounce some topics off of his cranium. And my friend Mike for asking some really pertinent questions on how this saw was designed so that we all had a chance to look at the detail on the injection module & injection pump, among other things.
    Thanks for watching.

I also found the airfilter to be non-"dust-proof" on mine, there was minor dust at the throttle butterfly.
I guess the issue is that..
    1. the air filter has two openings - the big one which is rubberized and the small one on top where the twisty-turny-thing is to lock the cover on. on top there's just this small foam washer which should seal the filter, but I found it doesn't.
    2. the main opening for the filter isn't very "foolproof", doesn't seal as well as I'd like it to
    3. the clamping force of the cover in stock form is not enough
I modded this with just a small ~5mm high ring of rubber (off of a cut bicycle inner tube) around the main white throttle-body-thing where the filter sits.
Additionally to that I made a (also same rubber) inner-tube round washer and put it over the original foam washer on the locking-thingy.
NOW it really locks (has a nice detent) and also seals well.

A 2mm thick plastic ring made from a bar oil bottle cap fixed the issue for me. I put it right under the foam ring and the issue was resolved.

I just put a payment down for one today! I'm not rookie when it comes to mechanical things and I do like simple and enjoy working as a woods man with my ported Husqvarna saws. But I just wanted a stock new saw as a back up and or main saw and this seamed to be good bang for buck. I can see the main issues would be lack of maintenance and por mix oil would not be good for it or any saw. So I figured with good regular up keep it should be a faithful saw fuel filters are cheep and a good dob of rubber grease around the base of the filter will catch any super fine dust . I've always used grease when seating my filters and never had a whisper of dust get past! Great video mate looking forward to the next one!

      Andrew hi.
Not really sure. Maybe the 181. For that day it was pretty advanced. It was a far superior mo-chine for handling a 32 day after day in a full man scenario- which was how it was done back then. The 064s were the next step evolution wise 2/3 years later. Then came the 288. I cut millions with 372s in a couple different decades. A good running 461 is hard to beat. In the end, it would depend upon the time frame your talking about from my perspective.
      Thanks for watching.

Down in Australia we are blessed with the most magnificent hardwood.
Red box, Ironbark, yellow box, Redgum.
      Hard as granite.
      I couldn't agree more about the 461.
      I absolutely adore that saw.
I also pulled an old 012 AV out of a neighbours rubbish pile.
It goes like a charm, even if it's the weirdest little saw I've ever seen.
Now I want a 064, but my wife may object.
But they say it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission 😜
Keep up the good work Jack.

These are incredibly powerful and quick accelerating saws. That being said, The air filtration system is severely lacking for a saw of this caliber. Almost all saws now have some kind of pre-separation separation system to remove most of the sawdust.Maybe they should look how Echo did it on the 7310p.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 роки тому

      Andy hi.
From my perspective, they have good power and rev up fairly quick. But,,, I'm a little jaded having had the opportunity to run some very powerful and at the same time quick accelerating saws.
They went with the "old school" type design of the 038/048/064 from the early 80s. Tank & filter separate from the crankcase & cylinder assembly. Unlike what is seen on the 462 which is a departure from the Stihl "norm".
Word on the street is that Echo "poached" some engineering staff from the 572 project at Husqvarna. I think that what you will find when the 588 & 592 hit the market is that the filtration systems on those two will be somewhat close to what is seen on the 7310.
      Thanks for watching.

Phillip hi. The West Coast wrap saws come with the "big kid" clutch cover and bucking spikes. I put the sprocket cover from my 462 on the 500i. I fitted the bucking spikes.
Any Stihl® shop can order the oem 500i hd clutch cover and the bigger factory dawgs.

I am an arborist though and rarely work in the woods. 500i is fantastic for a climbing removal though because of the easy starting.

what does this "pulse line" do?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  4 роки тому +1

maxbify hi. In this saw, the injection pump. In the others, the pump side diaphragm in the carburetor. Which is pretty much the same thing in both.
In essence, the piston going through the motion of running creates vacuum in the crank case. The pulse line is "tapped in to" the crankcase, usually in the back and above the bottom of the stroke on the modern saws.
Through the process of operation the positive and alternating negative pressure in the crankcase causes a "pulse effect" in the line that is also connected to the nipple coming out of the pump side cap on the carb.
This pulse is what moves the pump diaphragm in the carb. The resultant "fluttering" of the diaphragm is what draws the fuel up, and out, of the fuel tank.
      Thanks for watching.

If you are asking for my opinion -
1st and foremost, I'm not try to sell myself. I am trying to show one way to complete a project (falling) and one man's opinion/observations on saws and their physicalites.
It is similar to NOVA not getting the viewship like, let us say, Star Wars.
Education/al productions have not gathered the large audience followings like we see in entertainment offerings as long as I've been paying attention.
It's no different on YT. Sensationalism sells, Period. Value of the content seems to be secondary.
I see people with a large subscription base "selling inaccuracies and/or partial truths". It happens on other social media platforms as well.
You will see negative and/or disparaging comments on this channel directed at the creator. There are other creators that delete any/all less than flattering dialog from the viewer "speak".
I choose to let the comments stand in the spirit of free speech - the media in this country could take a few pointers there...
In the end, I've said for awhile now that those that know will make the appropriate comments. By default, those that don't will also make the appropriate comments. At times, I'll leave it up to the viewer to delineate the difference.
I mean, if you wanted my take on it, lol
      Thanks for watching.

For me, sense day one of announcing the 500i. IMO, the complexity and not thought out design for the plan of action for an efi attempt chainsaw, (still will have diaphragm failures cmon now!) Etc, the conpontetry and prone to failure is soo high on this saw. (In my opinion).
Is a easy choice to pass up the big price tag FRAGILE appearing 500i. Everything I continue to see I dislike. I really appreciate the in depth view.
I'll stick with our 2000+ hr trusty 66s. My newer 462 doesnt have the complete package I'm looking for as well, but I love it. I hope stihl ditches this 500i concept, and puts r&d into the 462 or let's say 463. With more 046 460 461 blood and they will have everyone's money.
I hate the 500i. My opinion is not fact. No one is wrong for loving a 500i. But for me, I'll never own one.
    I'm done ranting. Thanks.
